Working Away From The Norm

Hey, been working on this team for a few days now and I think I have it just about good, I must have been through at least 5 different versions now but I think this time it's at least satisfactory. So without further adieu, here is the team:

GengarNormalSprite.gif
@ Life Orb (MysticGar-Credits to Katakiri)
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 252 SAtk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Timid Nature
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Protect

This set has been unbelievably effective, able to OHKO many of the potent threats of OU, unsuspecting Genesects almost always fall prey to the HP fire. Not only is the set more offensive than the typical Sub Disable (which enables it to offer better coverage) but its abnormality is often able to catch opponents off guard. The life orb gives it that nice boost in damage and considering it's relatively frail I think the damage output is more important.

130.png
@Choice Scarf
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Waterfall
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Ice Fang

I really think this is the most underrated Gyarados set, it's fast and people completely forget it as a possibility. The Scarf and Jolly nature allow it to outspeed the majority of competitors and with accurate observations, allow it to revenge kill like no other. After it nabs a nice revenge kill it's often able to secure another one or two with that nice moxie boost although often it is forced out and saved for later.

473.png
@ Life Orb
Trait: Thick Fat
EVs: 248 Hp/ 252 Atk / 252 Spd / 4 HP
Jolly Nature
- Ice Shard
- Icicle Crash
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge

After discovering that sometimes an Ice Fang isn't quite enough to OHKO every threat weak to it, I experimented with some other things. I knew that I wanted some priority but after trying Donphan for a variety of roles and trying its Ice Shard for coverage I saw the the clear choice was really Mamoswine. I went with the belt to make finishing off those pesky dragons much easier as well as secure the damage on the other things it may destroy.

Then for some longevity I added...

rotom-wash.png
@ Leftovers
Calm | 252 HP / 32 SpA / 224 SpD
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave
- Pain Split
Trying this set after recommendation- I've found while the damage output dramatically drops the longevity is extended. I am considering dropping some hp EV's and some SpD EV's To boost that SpA. Also thinking about changing the nature to modest...

forretress.png

Forretress @ Leftovers | Sturdy
Relaxed | 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 SpD
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Volt Switch / Pain Split / Spikes
- Gyro Ball / Pain Split /Spikes

After experimenting a while with a broad array of stealth rocker's I have found that the variance offered in Jirachi is unparalleled. With a vast move pool it is able to set up rocks, offer coverage, cripple some offensive threats and tank some hits too. Its nice stats and awesome utility make it my favorite Sr'er and the coverage it gives to the team makes it a wonderful addition.

Last but not least,

212.png
@ Choice Band
Trait: Technician
EVs: 248 Hp/ 252 Atk / 8 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Superpower
- Pursuit
- U-turn
- Bullet Punch

The last thing I felt I lacked on the team was some momentum and a lack of some coverage. The addition of Scizor allowed me to pursuit trap as well as OHKO things like choice band Terrakion or Mixed T-Tar. I felt Scizor offered what I was looking for and patched the teams major weaknesses well and really rounded out the team.

So that's all for now, any suggestions are greatly appreciated, Thanks!

EDIT1* Updated With Suggestions.

Hi there. This team, being a weatherless one, will have more problem than weather teams dealing with rain and sun. The first thing i would suggest you is to put a Choice scarf on your gengar. The reason is that in this way you can atleast outspeed Modest venusaur and do a lot of damage to it. It still can baitkill Genesect, and its a generally better scarfer than Gyarados. Now that you have scarfgengar you can easily change your scarfgyarados into a dragon dance one. It would really help you to sweep against rain team. I would also recommend you to use a different spread on rotom-w, a specially defensive one seems to be better here, because you will need more bulk as possible to switch into Hydro pumps and Hurricane. I think that the spread of scizor also should be changed to a bulkyer one, even with max speed jolly it doesnt outspeed anything relevant, and the hp investiment is generally better.

Set
Gengar (F) @ Choice Scarf
Trait: Levitate
EVs: 4 Def / 252 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Shadow Ball
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Fire]
- Destiny Bond/ Trick

Gyarados (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Moxie
EVs: 144 HP / 116 Atk / 248 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Dragon Dance
- Waterfall
- Bounce
- Substitute

Rotom-w spread-->EVs: 248 HP / 28 SAtk / 232 SDef + calm nature
Scizor spread--> EVs: 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spd

with that said, gl with your team :x

Hi. Your team is very nice, and I love that Gengar set!

Your Jirachi set seems quite ineffective to me; it doesn't deal that much damage anyway and it has plenty of things that can outspeed and OHKO, or that just doesn't care about. While SR support and paralysis are always valuable, you're giving free switches to basically every bulky Water, Ground, and Heatrans out there, to not even mention Starmie (that resists everything, and Spins in your face, or Hydro Pumps the incoming Gengar, while not caring at all about paralysis thanks to its ability). Also, it can't deal serious damage too, since unboosted neutral natured base 100 doesn't work very well if you rely on low powered STAB moves with poor coverage (Iron Head) or that only cover very specific threats (Fire Punch). It doesn't even carry Wish, thus it can be worn down quite easily by hazards and switching around, too. I'd suggest replacing it with a Forretress, that gives better bulk on the physical side while providing a SR setter, and a Rapid Spin user (your Gyarados will LOVE that). Also, it can carry Volt Switch as well, to avoid Magnezones and to mantain momentum in general. Forretress will also work as a decent switch-in for many powerful threats that can maim you otherwise, like Garchomp (which you can easily revenge but not-so-easily switch-in) and Landorus. IF you're concerned about things setting up on you (especially Dragons) you can consider running HP Ice on Forry, but that wouldn't be my main pick when you have Mamoswine available.

- Rapid Spin

- Gyro Ball / Pain Split /Spikes

Having just gained a sturdy physical wall, you could change your Rotom-W set to a Specially Defensive one, like already suggested. This would give you a solid defensive core, with the ability to preserve momentum while checking many powerful threats in this meta. In particular, Tornadus-T is handled well, as well as powerful Water attacks; both of them could easily give you problem with your actual team composition.

Rotom-W @ Leftovers | Levitate
Calm | 252 HP / 32 SpA / 224 SpD
- Hydro Pump
- Volt Switch
- Will-O-Wisp / Thunder Wave
- Pain Split

I'd also change the Mamoswine held item to Life Orb. While Expert Belt preserves your health, it doesn't let you hit hard enough, especially while trying to catch things not weak to your STABs on the switch. The LO recoil is annoying, but not so much, especially since you'd gain a Rapid Spinner with my previous suggestion, that lessens the amount of residual damage Mamoswine will suffer.

CB Jolly Scizor is a nice idea, although it will need to be tested. I can see some advantages over the standard 248 HP / 252 Atk / 8 Spe, since you can outspeed Magnezone and Superpower him, or U-Turn out; however all of those advantages are somewhat hampered from the Choice Band you're holding. If you still want to keep that spread / nature, I'd suggest a Life Orb as item, to be able to switch moves and surprise targets that are otherwise faster with a powerful move, and you could also consider Roost over Superpower to regain health lost with LO recoil; you'd be able to U-Turn out on non-scarf standard Zone anyway, putting him in a bad position. If you want to keep your Band instead, I'd suggest to switch to the standard EV spread, that gives you better bulk which is far better for a Choiced set.

Hope it helped. Good luck with your team.

hi

Cool team. First off, definitely seconding Life Orb > Expert Belt on Mamoswine. The power boost of Life Orb is greatly needed on Mamoswine, as it allows you to get guranteed KO's on theirans after SR, and do greater damage to Ferrothorn and Skarmory, who without a Life Orb can comftably take you on, with a Life Orb their chances of doing so are pretty much gone with both not being able to switch in to Mamoswine very well at all with Life Orb attached. I would also like to suggest Superpower > Stone Edge. Superpower lets you hit Air Balloon heatran which otherwise walls and defeats your current set, as well as destroying a weakened Ferrothorn and being able to get a guranteed hard hit on Rotom-W if you catch it on the switch. Stone Edge really only hits Gyarados, who can't take on Rotom-W well at all and can be revenged by your own Gyarados if its a more bulky version without a sub up.

Finally, if you don't go for a Specially Defensive variant of Rotom-W, I think using Volt Switch > Thunderbolt would be really great. This lets you form the infamous "scrotom" core of Scizor and Rotom-W and lets you gather momentum rather quickly and lets you switch out of potential counters into a pokemon that can easily beat it, and can even generate switches until the point where the opponent's rotom-w counter is worn down severly to the point where Gyarados can attempt to revenge kill it and grab a moxie boost, and from there go for a sweep against the opponents team

Thank you everyone for you suggestions, I tried all of them and updated with what I have kept.

I've found the bulkier Gyarados doesn't work as well with the rest of the team and the regular set with the MysticGar is a nice combination. As I mentioned in the updated thread, I've found Rotom-W lacks some power now.

I also have found issue with both Breloom and Gastrodon.

Thanks again for the assistance thus far.
