Wrath of the Ice Beast

Wrath of the Ice Beast

Hello. I am fairly new to the battling scene and I tried my hand at making a team from scratch. My team is centered around Kyurem-B with team support aimed at allowing the black ice dragon to pull off a sweep. So far my team is decent yet it feels incomplete. I can't seem to think of the one component that it needs, whether it be a new teammate, an adjusting in EVs or a simple move change. Maybe someone can help...maybe?

The Team at a glance:

Team Overview:

Ninjask @ Leftovers
Careful, 252 HP, 168 Def, 80 SpD, 8 Spe
~Swords Dance
~Protect
~Substitute
~Baton Pass
Ninjask is here to give Kyurem-B a speed boost so that it may sweep. Given that Kyurem needs a lot of speed to surpass its foes, this little bug is important. Ninjask runs a generic set here, with Swords Dance when I manage to keep a Substitute up for one more turn, though I could always replace Swords Dance with a different move because whenever Ninjask can conveniently use it, I could always just use Baton Pass so that Kyurem can switch in without harm. I was thinking of using Taunt > Swords Dance to stop set-up sweepers such as Cloyster or DDNite.

Breloom @ Life Orb
Technician Jolly 4 HP 252 Atk 252 Spe
~Mach Punch
~Low Sweep
~Bullet Seed
~Spore
I chose the standard Techniloom to handle some threats that may step in the way of Kyurem's sweep. Aside from that, I find Techniloom rather cheap and that most teams are prepared for it, but I would like some professional input on Breloom's position on my team.

380.gif
Latias @ Light Clay
Timid 252 HP, 4 SpA, 252 Spe
~Reflect
~Light Screen
~Healing Wish
~Draco Meteor
The standard Dual Screens Latias is used to provide defensive support for Kyurem. I use the screens to add some bulk to Kyurem's already decent defenses to allow it to take priority hits and switch-in hits. I gave the 4 extra EVs in Special Attack so that Latias could use Draco Meteor in case it becomes Taunt bait. Should I replace Latias with a different Pokemon, as I wonder if its purpose could be fulfilled some other way?

205.gif
Forretress @ Leftovers
Calm 252 HP 176 Def 80 SpD
~Stealth Rock
~Spikes
~Rapid Spin
~Volt Switch
Since Kyurem is weak to all forms of entry hazard I need something to spin hazards off of my side of the field. I found a potent spinner in Forretress, who could not only spin hazards away but set them itself. You may be wondering why I have Stealth Rock instead of Toxic Spikes, and that is because I do not have the patience to set up all 2 layers and then proceed to set up Spikes, but I will switch back if one can provide a proper explanation. Volt Switch is Forretress' attacking move because it allows Foretress to keep momentum on my side of the field.

Reuniclus @ Leftovers
Magic Guard Quiet 148 HP 108 Def 252 SpA (0 IVs)
~Psyshock
~Focus Blast/Miss
~Shadow Ball
~Trick Room
Another possibility is to go with Trick Room to reverse the mechanics. Reuniclus is a great Pokemon that can come in on a hazard-laden field and take a Will-O-Wisp aimed at Kyurem by Sableye. Reuniclus can also counter a few of Kyurem's Fighting-type threats and physical walls which would wall Kyurem. Do I really need Trick Room, or should I forego it for a more useful alternative such as Recover or Hidden Power?

Black+Kyurem.jpg
Kyurem-Black @ Life Orb
Lonely 196 Atk 48 SpA 12 SpD 252 Spe
~Fusion Bolt
~Outrage
~Ice Beam
~Roost
Kyurem-B is the centerpiece of my team. It hits like a truck and can pull off a 6-0 sweep if well prepared. I made Kyurem a mixed attacker so that Ice Beam does more damage when it needs to. Roost provides reliable recovery when Latias has already gave its Healing Wish. I went with Life Orb because switching attacks is crucial for Kyurem to pull off a sweep against a diverse set of foes. Is the self-made EV spread not right, or does Kyurem need a Choice Band for more power?

Constructive criticism and professional opinions are greatly appreciated.

Yo royanight,

Ninjask was in OU last generation, but the reason it fell to NU is that typing, Faster Scarfers in B2W2 and the abundance of priority. Even the weakest priority like Muscle Band Mamoswine can OHKO the insect with a ice shard. No one uses Ninjask as a Baton Passer anymore. Ninjask only works well against inexperienced players. I would recommend using a Rock Polish Defensive Gliscor. Gliscor isn't just Taunt crap like Ninjask because it can use Earthquake which can be decent in strength when you have both boosts. Poison Heal and his defenses make it even better, letting him getting another Rock Polish too ensure Kyurem-B isn't out sped by CS Terrakion, Keldeo, and Latios.

Gliscor | Toxic Orb
Poison Heal
252 HP | 56 Def | 200 SDef
Rock Polish | Baton Pass | Earthquake | Protect

Your EV spread for Kyurem-B looks good but I would just keep it simple at 60 HP / 252 Atk / 196 Spe | Adamant Nature. The last thing is to change your Kyurem-B's item to Choice Band. This is much better because LO is mainly used for mixed sets. If you are worried about an unsuccessful sweep, then you may change Protect on the Gliscor set to Swords Dance.

Everything else looks good. Nice team!

Hey there, that's a nice team you have there so, I just wanted to congratulate you on that!

Anyway, on to the rate.

I do agree with TheStriker about Ninjask; Ninjask only works well on Full on Baton Pass teams. However, I think you should use Agility Zapdos > Ninjask to help with Tornadus-T and in general it is just quite a good Pokemon.

I think that you should use Ferrothorn > Forretress, as in my opinion, I think that you are putting too much pressure on Forretress by making it set up Rocks, Spikes, and Spin. I am aware that if you do go through with this change, that you would lose your spinner; so for that, I recommend Dual Screen Espeon > Latias Espeon is a much better Dual Screener imo, not only does it bounce back Status moves, Hazards, but it also beats Deoxys-D teams which is really helpful!

Sets
Zapdos @ Leftovers
Trait: Pressure
EVs: 248 HP / 140 Def / 88 SAtk / 32 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Substitute
- Agility
- Baton Pass
- Thunderbolt

Espeon (M) @ Light Clay
Trait: Magic Bounce
EVs: 252 HP / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Timid Nature (+Spd, -Atk)
- Light Screen
- Reflect
- Psychic
- Sunny Day

Anyway, nice team. Hope I helped!

What does Agility Zapdos have over Rock Polish Gliscor? Gliscor appears to have more defense and more recovery (12% Poison Heal and no cancelation in sand > 6% Leftovers or none in sand), while Zapdos has higher speed and the ability to hit common threats such as Tornadus-T and Keldeo harder.

During testing I found I have a crippling weakness to Volcarona that is impossible to overlook. Only Zapdos can switch in safely, and that is when Volcarona lacks HP Rock. I think Gliscor alleviates that problem by taking a hit and using EQ. Lastly, I would like input on Reuniclus, as I feel that its moveset could use some work. I was thinking of running a Tank set with Recover / Psyshock / HP Fire / Thunderbolt , the last two moves being replaceable with other coverage moves such as Shadow Ball or Focus Blast.
