Introduction: Finally deciding to comeback to the competitive scene, I took some time to quickly learn the OU Tier. Knowing weather was a popular theme in B&W meta, I decided to try my luck with a weather team. I have always wanted to make a sunny day team since the days I started competitive pokemon in 3rd gen, I just found it difficult do to the fact I actually had to cast Sunny Day and keep it up. B&W answered my prayers and gave me Drought on something in OU. I picked up my thinking cap and went to work. I was gonna add a team building process section but I realized it probably be a topic in its own with how many different ways I tried this before I came to something I like haha. Any now to the analysis of the team and chosen sets. Ohh and if you curious about the name its from a Blazblue Continuum Shift Extend Theme of the same name.

Team In-Depth

ninetales17-1.jpg

Ninetales (F) @ Leftovers
Trait: Drought
EVs: 128 HP / 252 SAtk / 20 SDef / 108 Spd
Modest Nature (+SAtk, -Atk)
- Fire Blast
- SolarBeam
- Sunny Day
- Safeguard

Set: Ninetales is a one of those pokemon I never thought I see in OU but here she is providing sun like a good fire fox. Knowing that I was entering the meta kinda on the late side, I took some time to look on Smogon other teams to get some ideas on what set to use. This one jump at me for what it provides. Safeguard allows me to switch counters in without those nasty status for 5 turns. I thought this is pretty interesting as Ninetales with its pretty weak offensive stats felt like she should be in the support role unlike her other weather inducing brothers. Sunny Day is a new inclusion on Ninetales over Power Swap. Allowing me to win most weather wars much easier. SolarBeam replaces Will-o-Wisp on this set. Will-o-Wisp has proven that its shaky accuracy just doesnt cut it in this meta. When it works its great but it has let me down too often to keep around.

Other Opinions: Protect is an option over Safeguard if I ever decide that path. Safeguard however has been the tool to let me win games and allows me to safely switch on pokes I normally would not, such as Sawsbuck on a bulky water with Scald.

sawsbuck-black-white-blw-14-1-1.jpg

Sawsbuck (F) @ Life Orb
Trait: Chlorophyll
EVs: 112 HP / 248 Atk / 148 Spd
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Swords Dance
- Horn Leech
- Nature Power
- Return

Set: When it came down to who was gonna be Ninetales partner-in-crime, the choice was pretty obvious for me. Sawsbuck is easily one of my favorite new pokemon B&W brought to the table. Ultimately I was using him as a late game sweeper so I decided on the Swords Dance Set. Horn Leech is his primarily STAB being that its the only physical Grass type move and recovery is extremely welcomed. Return is his other STAB option and easily his most powerful and providing a powerful attack against Dragons which otherwise would wall Sawsbuck. Nature Power is his final move and since it is always Earthquake in Wi-FI battles and simulators it was an perfect choice for his final coverage move

Other Opinions: Jump Kick was considered over Nature Power baring to hit Skarmory harder while still having a pretty decent coverage move. I decided against it being that I can take Skarmory out with my team pretty easy anyway. Ferrathorn could be a threat but Nature Power hits it pretty hard anyway and wont last with that recovery but still falls under being easy to take out on my team. Megahorn was another option I thought about using on Skarmory being that it could hit those Psychics and Latios/Latias hard. Return however has been efficient at taking those threats out. Choice Band Set was also an option being that it provides an immediate threat and Sawsbuck could act as an revenge killer with speed boosts from the sun. I decided the ability to switch attacks and sweep was better for my team.

Infernape4RisingRivals43-1.jpg

Infernape (M) @ Life Orb
Trait: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SAtk / 252 Spd
Naive Nature (+Spd, -SDef)
- Overheat
- Close Combat
- Stone Edge
- U-turn

Set: Good old MixNape, a favorite of mine from 4th Gen. Choosing him on this team was an easy choice for his ability to take out Sawsbuck resists and benefit from the sun a little as well. Overheat is a monstrous attack in the sun being able to injure many pokes thinking of coming in on Nape. Close Combat is his second STAB move and pretty obvious inclusion on a pokemon of this caliber. Stone Edge finally replaces Mach Punch. I found Mach Punch was not cutting it as well as I hoped and made that changed. This does give Infernape much more coverage and another check to Volcarona. U-Turn also replaces Hidden Power [Ice]. In practice it was just a dead move for me and did not accomplish much. It was also easy to play around after it was known. U-turn allows me a great scouting option and a possibility to switch in Ninetales on a predicted switch if needed or the right counter.

Other Opinions: Infernape movepool is ridiculous so there is so much I would like to have here but could not. Grass Knot was an option to use against bulky waters such as Swampert, Quagsire, and Jellicent. Personally I found it too weak for me to really put a dent in what I actually wanted to hurt, Politoad. Stone Edge was something I kinda want to put back on here to some extent to hit Flyers such as Gyarados and hit ghosts while keeping decent coverage. Flare Blitz was an option as an alternative to Overheat but decided against it since I was using Life Orb and the recoil could be dangerous and prevent him from being used later on. Nasty Plot Infernape was an option as well since Nasty Plot/Fire Blast/Close Combat/Hidden Power [Ice] would provide basically the same coverage but get a boost as well on the switch on certain pokemon. Nasty Plot Infernape is up there in a choice over MixNape.

vendingset3slowbro-1.jpg

Slowbro (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SAtk
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Psychic
- Ice Beam
- Fire Blast
- Slack Off

Set: Slowbro is a pokemon I have not used much of in anything since I started competitive pokemon. However, B&W blessed him with Regenerator, an excellent ability on a wall such as Slowbro. Slowbro set is to act as a counter to this teams main problem pokemon, Terrakion, Landorus, and Conkuldurr. Psychic and Ice Beam can take out these threats with ease and provides pretty decent coverage. Fire Blast is here since it seems Ferrathorn and likes like to come in on Slowbro but Fire Blast can scare him off. Slack Off is Slowbro's on the field healing which rounds out his set.

Other Opinions: Well there is quite a few things I could do with Slowbro. Slowbro can use Scald which has a nice 30% chance to burn. Since Sun will most of the time be up weakening it and since Ninetales has Will-o-Wisp I left this option. Thunder Wave is a pretty good option I been considering over Flamethrower to paralyze faster threats such as Latios/Latias that likes to come in on Slowbro. If I decided to go Nasty Plot Infernape, this would be an option to help kill those faster threats and chance of Paralysis is always good.

42-1.jpg

Donphan (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def
Adamant Nature (+Atk, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard

Set: I finally replaced Gyarados with Donphan. After trying all the rapid spinners I felt Donphan is the only one that works for me. This set is pretty standard. Stealth Rock to provide my main entry hazard to break Multiscale and allow me to beat Dragonite. Rapid Spin to get rid of hazards especially since this team is vulnerable to all entry hazards. Earthquake for a solid STAB attack and Ice Shard to revenge kill Dragons.

Other Opinions: I chose the Offensive version over the Defensive version primarily because I have Slowbro doing most of my defensive needs. It works so far so only time can tell if I will need to change it.

69-chansey-1.jpg

Chansey (F) @ Eviolite
Trait: Natural Cure
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef
Bold Nature (+Def, -Atk)
- Seismic Toss
- Toxic
- Wish
- Protect

Set: Chansey is also a new addition filling in Blissey's shoes. I need a much more defensive option because Specs Latios was hurting me badly with those Psyshocks and Chansey was the answer. While I lose out on my special attacking, I gain the much needed Wish Support for my team. Toxic is there to stall out some potential game changers such as Latias without Refresh and bulky waters. Seismic Toss is my only attacking option but is enough on Chansey.

Other Opinions: Heal Bell is an option over Toxic providing necessary cleric support but usually Toxic is better. It is still an option worth looking into.

After major changes, I would say after seeing Volcarona in action, I kinda want to fit her on this team. Just do not know where lol. Otherwise the team is doing slightly better with the changes. I will appreciate anyone that takes their time and to read my RMT and for any advice and suggestions as well.

Welcome to 5th gen, it's a pretty messy place ;)

Anyway this will be a quick(ish) rate cause I got class soon haha.

Main problem I see right off the bat is you have no real Tyranitar switch-in. Tyranitar is probably the main threat against sun(Politoed too but Sun tends to carry good Grass pokes'). Your two physical walls are smacked around by Ttar's Stab Stone Edges(in the case of Gyarados) and Crunchs(case of Slowbro). I suggest running a Defensive Donphan over your Gyarados set. The set I suggest is:

Donphan (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spd
Impish Nature (+Def, -SAtk)
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
- Earthquake
- Ice Shard

This is a pretty classic set but if it ain't broke, ya know :) So this set brings a lot of similar things to Gyarados, first and foremost a bulky Physical tank. The main pros with Donphan are though that he provides a solid Tyranitar switch-in as well as for sand sweepers like Terrakion and Landorus who can carry Bug-type attacks to hit Slowbro. The second and almost more important point with Donphan is he brings Stealth Rock support. In 5th gen Stealth Rock is arguably more important than it was in 4th gen. It helps check mega threats like Dragonite and Volcarona. Ice Shard is great utility to revenge kill dragons(you can also try adding some Atk EVs to beef up the damage), and Rapid Spin is amazing for sun teams. It cleans up those rocks that limit your Fire-types' potential. You do however lose out of the phazing power of Dragon Tail but in phazing is rarely used in 5th gen, besides for a handful of niche pokes.

Anyway hope you consider the change,

Good Luck!

Hey

Nice looking Sun team you have here but I got some suggestions that could help you out.

First of all I second Joey's Donphan suggestion. It provides you with a more then decent Rapid Spinner, something that is preferred by Sun teams. I would use a slightly different EV-spread though. A spread of 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Def with an Adamant nature will suffice. This will give Ice Shard a significant boost to check Dragon types who could be problematic otherwise, especially if they manage to get up a DD.

Since you are using a Sun team I so no reason why you wouldn't use Chansey over Blissey. Since Chansey is even bulkier then Blissey thanks to Eviolite, she will be able to take even Psyshock you mentioned as a danger. The only downside of using Chansey is that you won't be able to use offensive moves without a set damage output so therefor I suggest a moveset of Wish / Protect / Seismic Toss / Toxic. With Wish Chansey can keep your other pokes healthy too.

Last but not least you could try out Roar over Safeguard on Ninetales. This allows you to beat Rest Volcarona and to phaze CM Reuniclus (until you get a better match-up). This will also make up for the loss of Dragon Tail if you go with the Donphan suggestion. Safeguard isn't that useful and you have Blissey/ Chansey to sponge status anyway.

Hope these suggestions helped and good luck with the team.

You may want to try a Scarfed special infernape with u-turn
infernape @ choice scarf
move 1: Close Combat
move 2: Fire Blast
move 3: Hidden Power Ice
move 4: U-Turn
ability: Blaze
nature: Hasty
evs: 108 Atk / 148 SpA / 252 Spe

This infenape is very useful against pokemon that want to try and set up on you. It is a great revenge killer as well.

@ Joey - Yeah 5th gen is pretty crazy. Donphan is an option I been going back and forth on. However I just havent found him that useful besides putting Rocks out, surprisingly since I used him quite effectively in 4th gen. It is worth a test again however and you are right that I do not have a direct counter to Tyranitar and that Terrakion/Landorus do have bug moves that makes it harder for Slowbro to hit.

Setup Style Terrakion is probably the hardest of the Terrakions to beat for this team for the reasons you stated such as no solid standard defenses to Terrakions STABs. Donphan, when I tested him before just didnt seem to have the bulk to withstand the offenses of those two but I have not had Wish Support so with Evolite Chansey might become the better option

I will test it though. Thanks for the rate

@ Delko - Yeah I figured as much since I didnt have time to check Chansey bulk and Blissey has always been my go to Special Wall since I started playing lol. Donphan and her are really gonna be tested today and see if it helps. Personally I probably stick to defensive Donphan but I try offensive one as well. Dragons are still gonna be a pain with Gyarados (primarily those setup ones) but see what I can do.

Safeguard however had allowed me to when matches and avoid possible status hax. However stopping CM Reunclus and Volcarona doesnt sound like a bad idea either. Worth a test

Thanks for the rate

@ emirinho - personally I am not a big fan on Scarfed ape. If I did run an Scarf pokemon, Darmantian easily goes to the top of my list. I always feel like I am holding back such a wonderful pokemon and his diversity. However it would still be an option worth looking into if needed

Thanks for the rate

Darmanitan is a good option as well. however, when the sun is not up infernape is better.
The main reason why i suggested a scarfer was because a dd dragonite completely destroys your team. And infernape is a better option when facing dragonite.

Hey Sa RunoX,

Roar > Safeguard is something I'd recommend for Ninetales, since it would be more useful against set-up sweepers. Sunny Day > Power Swap is also something you should opt for, since you could use it against Politoed and Tyranitar to force them out. Power Swap won't be hitting Special Attack users half the time, anyways. I think Stone Edge > Mach Punch would be beneficial for Infernape, who could OHKO Volcarona before it starts setting up Quiver Dances. However, you do lose out on priority, so it's up to you. For SlowBRO, Thunder Wave > Ice Beam is a change that would help cripple Choice Scarf abusers, like Rotom-W and others. Aside from Sawsbuck, your team is rather slow, so having paralysis support would be a big help. Fire Blast > Flamethrower would also help SlowBRO catch KOs on things it would normally 2HKO if using Flamethrower. Chansey > Blissey is another change that could help, since Chansey packs better numerical stats in Defense than Blissey thanks to the Eviolite. You should use the moveset indicated above by Delko, and the standard 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SDef EV spread. Anyhow, I really like your team, especially that RestTalk Gyarados. It's pretty fun to use. Anyways, I hope my rate helped! Good luck!

~ Expert Physics

@ emirinho - I actually have no problems from DD nite at all. Between Gyarados and Slowbro I can take it out usually. Gyarados stops it from setting up and Slowbro can take it out once Multiscale is broken. Choice Band I have more problems with based on that immediate power.

@ Expert Physics - I actually decided myself to take out Power Swap as well. While it has actually help on against certain BP teams, I decided to replace it with Roar. Safeguard however has been working extremely well for me anyway. If anything I would take it out for Sunny Day to beat the wars. Will-o-Wisp I might drop to be honest. It just either misses or I just cant find the right opportunity.

I am gonna test Stone Edge over Mach Punch and see how that works as well

While I am loving Slowbro because of Regenerator, I might actually switch him for Cresselia which could do the same thing I am using Slowbro except with better overall bulk and ability to set up Reflect since my team is probably more prone to Physical Threats. Though I will either lose Ice Beam or Psychic and at this moment Psychic seems to trump since Terrakion is everywhere. However I if I keep Slowbro, I might not drop Ice Beam but I gotta test having it and not having it. Worth a shot

And yeah I am doing Chansey over Blissey. That extra bulk vs Special Attackers will be helpful as well. Only thing is I am still trying to squeeze Stealth Rock on it while keep the Wish Set. Wish is so helpful in the long run of things.

Yeah Gyarados will have to be the MVP a lot of times on here. He help me win so many games that when I took him out to test Donphan, I clearly miss him. Thanks a lot for the rate

bump

Been testing Chansey over Blissey and it seems to work decently but I do miss the Leftover recovery however.

Donphan really didnt work out at all. Too obvious to switch in and was too easy to be taken care off.

Gyarados is so useful I dont see myself getting him replaced.

I tried this Set on Ninetales to make it less predictable (Overheat, Toxic, Will-o-Wisp, Roar) and it work kinda well but Safeguard was missed from this team. A status healer might be helpful but Chansey/Blissey set is pretty tight.

My team does need a strong reliable revenge killer. Not sure who though but Infernape as CS doesnt seem strong enough.

I also tested Cresselia over Slowbro and Reflect abuse is pretty good on this team but I am still too wide open for solid special attackers.

This team seems pretty weak to stealth rocks, I would highly suggest you use a rapid spinner on this team. Because you lack Venusaur to absorb t-spikes, you going to have to go with Starmie or Forretress. While starmie does lose it's biggest stab, it provides a useful check for things, while Forretress would allow you to run wish support on Blissey/Chansey because it can take over stealth rock responsibilities.

If you switch out Gyrados for Skarmory or Gliscor, I don't think a rapid spinner would be as nessisary though, it is just Gyrados will be eaten alive by stealth rocks when you go against volt-turn teams.

From running a sun team myself, I have to highly suggest Jump Kick > Natural power, as litterally the only pokemon you lose out on is Heatran (which rarely runs balloon anymore) and Chandelure.

If your having problems with special beasts, try a more specially defense spread of Bold 6 HP / 252 Def / 252 Sp. Def, with that Blissey pretty much has all the special bulk it needs. If using Chansey go with Calm 116 HP / 252 Def / 140 SDef to take specs-Psychoshocks from Latios like a champ, and thats it though.

Good luck.

@Scarf - yeah stealth rocks and entry hazards in general kill me. I finally made the switch on that to Donphan. Personally he the only one that works better than the others on this team.

Natural Power also hits Jirachi harder but so far I am still testing Jump kick.

Thanks for the opinions.

Made major changes to the team. Thanks everyone for there input

Hey there.

First off, change Sawsbuck's EV spread to 120 HP / 252 Atk / 136 Spe. This change is very minor, but has major effects since it lets Sawsbuck outrun a very common Choice Scarf Pokemon in Terrakion in sunlight, meaning that it will be able to sweep much more easily.

Also, switch Donphan's EV spread to 128 HP / 252 Atk / 128 Spe. Rapid Spin support is essential for a sun team, and this EV spread lets Donphan spin much more easily. The Speed EVs let it outrun standard Jellicent, which is the most common spin-blocker in OU; Donphan can easily score a 2HKO on said Jellicent, meaning that it cannot come in to spin-block Donphan safely. Other benefits include being able to outrun slow walls such as Blissey.

Nice sun team. Hope I helped, and good luck!

Actually, I've found that 112 HP / 248 Atk / 148 Spe works even better. This still allows the deer to outrun Scarf Terrakion, but also allows it to outrun Timid non-Scarf Politoed in the rain so you can Horn Leech it before it Ice Beams you. The HP hits a Life Orb number so you drain less of your HP with it per attack, and the rest are in Attack; the point from Attack doesn't matter too much, especially when you boost up.

I tested both sets of EVs on Sawsbuck and I do kinda like Seth's EVs a bit better myself. Thats a change thats gonna stay now. Thanks!

I will try the donphan ones out but not sure if losing bulk would be beneficial but we will see.

Thanks for the help guys

Team is doing extremely well I might add. However I do have a slight Breloom weakness but I can usually outplay him based on his set.

Sub ones are probably the most annoying but Slowbro takes out Mono Focus Punch.

Also I am very Starmie weak once Chansey is gone. I have nothing that really outspeeds it unless I have sun up.
