[OVERVIEW]

Xatu was gifted with the ability Magic Bounce, which prevents it from being crippled by status and also allows it to act as a solid anti-entry hazard pivot. It also boasts reliable recovery in Roost and a rather colorful movepool, both of which allow it to fill a range of roles from a Calm Mind user to a U-turn pivot. Xatu generally works well on more balanced teams, acting as the team's main source of entry hazard control. However, its bulk isn't exactly amazing, even with investment, while its typing leaves it susceptible to many common attacking types such as Dark, Ghost, and Rock.

Moves
========

Psychic is the mandatory STAB option, doing decent damage to Fighting- and Poison-types such as Gurdurr, Weezing, Vileplume, and Garbodor despite no investment. Psyshock is a similar STAB move, but it hits foes on the Defense stat as opposed to the Special Defense stat, which gives Xatu the ability to do more damage to Pokemon such as Assault Vest Hariyama, Cryogonal, and Mantine. Roost is necessary given that Xatu will be pivoting in and out frequently and allows Xatu to stay healthy and function as a great anti-entry hazard and anti-status pivot. Giga Drain is used for its super effective coverage against common Stealth Rock setters such as Rhydon, and it also lets Xatu restore health. Heat Wave is another solid option to do critical damage to Pawniard, Ferroseed, Mawile, and Klinklang (also breaking the Substitutes of the last). Thunder Wave is an option to prevent Pokemon such as Lilligant from setting up on Xatu for free. U-turn is crucial to the success of the set, allowing Xatu to pivot around and gain momentum for the team and working fantastically in tandem with Magic Bounce.

Set Details
========

A spread of 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 Spe with a Timid nature gives Xatu some much-needed physical bulk, and allows it to outspeed Adamant Gallade and Adamant Sawk. An alternate spread using 200 HP EVs and 252 Defense EVs keep Xatu as bulky as possible and allow it to switch into Stealth Rock four times, while 56 Speed EVs with a Bold nature allow Xatu to outspeed neutral-natured base 70 Speed Pokemon such as Mantine, Samurott, and Ludicolo. Colbur Berry makes Xatu a much more reliable Fighting-type check and lets Xatu survive the occasional Pursuit or Knock Off from Pokemon such as Choice Band Sneasel. Rocky Helmet is also an option to slowly wear down foes that make contact with Xatu as it pivots in and finds moments to Roost off the damage. Leftovers is also an option to slightly increases Xatu's longevity. Magic Bounce bounces back entry hazards such as Stealth Rock and prevents status moves such as Taunt and Toxic from stopping recovery or crippling Xatu or its team with status.

Usage Tips
========

Xatu can bounce back entry hazards with Magic Bounce, but it must be wary of switching in on entry hazard setters that carry super effective coverage that could dispatch it. Xatu should also be used and switched in throughout the entirety of the game to reflect entry hazards and status moves whenever the opportunity presents itself. Psychic should be used to whittle down opposing Pokemon that cannot threaten Xatu, but it shouldn't be used as much if the opponent has a Dark-type Pokemon that can get a free switch. When predicting a foe to switch in, Xatu should generally try to hit it with a coverage move or simply U-turn out to catch momentum and shift into a more favorable matchup. Against faster Pokemon that could possibly threaten Xatu with super effective coverage, it is better to hard switch to avoid the risk of damage instead of using U-turn.

Team Options
========

Gurdurr and Sawk are good partners, as Xatu has trouble with Dark-, Rock-, and Ice-types such as Liepard, Sneasel, Pawniard, which can all KO it without much trouble. Sawk also appreciates Xatu's ability to block entry hazards, which keeps Sturdy intact. Rhydon is a good partner as it resists Rock and is immune to Electric, which prevents Volt Switch users such as Rotom from getting momentum off of Xatu. Lanturn is a similarly strong partner, as it is one of the only Pokemon to resist the famous Ice + Electric combo, both of which hit Xatu for super effective damage; Xatu also forms a VoltTurn core with Lanturn. Lanturn shuts down opposing Volt Switch users with Volt Absorb, while Xatu resists Grass and is immune to Ground. Liepard, Sneasel, and Pawniard, which Xatu dislikes to face, are ironically good partners, as they can use Knock Off or Pursuit to trap pesky Psychic- or Ghost-types, while Xatu covers their Fighting-type weakness and prevents entry hazards from going up, something Sneasel enjoys. Liepard itself can run U-turn to provide more momentum as well. Grass-types such as Lilligant resist Electric-type moves and are useful to take on bulky Rock-types, which Xatu can occasionally struggle to KO. Naturally, any Pokemon that has a weakness to Stealth Rock such as Scyther, Pyroar, or Vivilion, is a good teammate, as it appreciates Xatu's ability to keep entry hazards, which would otherwise severely cripple, it off the field.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move 1: Calm Mind
move 2: Roost
move 3: Psyshock
move 4: Heat Wave / Signal Beam
item: Colbur Berry / Leftovers
ability: Magic Bounce
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Calm Mind allows Xatu to boost its uninvested Special Attack and Special Defense stats, giving it the ability to break down or sweep the opponent's team after attaining enough boosts. Roost is necessary for reliable recovery, giving Xatu 50% of its health back and keeping it healthy throughout the match. The preferred STAB move is Psyshock, which hits Pokemon on their Defense stat as opposed to their Special Defense stat, doing significantly more damage to foes such as Mantine. Stored Power is an option that should mainly be used in tandem with Pokemon with Baton Passers such as Gorebyss, as Xatu can then use Stored Power to deal tremendous damage to even foes that resist it. Heat Wave should be used if one needs to KO Steel-types that can tank Psyshock or Stored Power such as Ferroseed and Klinklang. Signal Beam is mainly used to beat Malamar and other Psychic- or Dark-types. Giga Drain is also a notable option to beat both Quagsire and Rhydon.

Set Details
=======

A spread of 252 HP / 176 Def / 80 Spe with a Timid nature gives Xatu some much-needed physical bulk, and allows it to outspeed Adamant Gallade and Adamant Sawk. An alternate spread of 200 HP EVs and 252 Defense EVs keep Xatu as bulky as possible while still allowing it to switch into Stealth Rock four times, while 56 Speed EVs with a Bold nature allow Xatu to outspeed neutral-natured base 70 Speed Pokemon such as Mantine, Samurott, and Ludicolo. Colbur Berry allows Xatu to survive one super effective Dark-type attack. Leftovers is also an option that increases Xatu's longevity. Magic Bounce is the ability of choice to bounce back entry hazards as well as status moves, and it also allows Xatu to boost without the fear of being crippled by status or phazed with Roar or Whirlwind.

Usage Tips
========

Xatu should mainly attempt to break through the Pokemon it checks, as its typing and bulk aren't the greatest and the chance of a sweep happening against offense is minimal. Xatu should try to set up against Pokemon it threatens such as Weezing, which can't inflict status on it or set up entry hazards while it's on the field. Calm Mind Xatu should be used in an effort to trample stall teams due to Magic Bounce negating most phazing attempts and status inflictions. Psyshock and Stored Power are preferred over Psychic, as they can help Xatu win Calm Mind wars; Psyshock also strikes Pokemon with a high Special Defense stat, such as Cryogonal and Mantine, on their weaker Defense. Be wary of setting up against Pokemon that carry moves with secondary effects, such as Scald and Sludge Bomb, as they could cripple Xatu and make it much more difficult to set up. Xatu can also beat Calm Mind Mega Audino by boosting along with it and then dispatching it with Psyshock. However, Xatu should not try to set up against other Calm Mind users with better bulk, such as Uxie and Musharna.

Team Options
========

Sawk and Gurdurr can defeat Dark-, Rock-, and Steel-types such as Pawniard, Liepard, and Kilnklang, which Xatu can't touch if it lacks the appropriate coverage move, and Sawk's Sturdy can be kept intact due to Xatu's Magic Bounce. Lanturn can take Ice- and Electric-type attacks, KO Rock-types with its STAB Water-type moves, and help Xatu enter the field safely with Volt Switch. Pawniard, Liepard, and Sneasel are good partners, as they can use their STAB Knock Off and Pursuit to deal with Psychic-types that Xatu cannot sufficiently hurt during its setup, while Xatu resists any Fighting-type moves thrown their way. Gorebyss has access to Shell Smash and Baton Pass, and because Xatu can't be phazed with Roar or Whirlwind or crippled with paralysis and has access to a ridiculously powerful move in Stored Power, they make good partners. Another good teammate is Thick Fat Hariyama, which can tank Rock- and Ice-type moves aimed at Xatu and is also bulky enough to take most special attacks that Xatu can't survive without any Calm Minds up.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Xatu has a variety of support moves it can use, such as Tailwind to boost its team's Speed for four turns and dual screens to allow a teammate to set up. Haze is another option that nullifies any stat changes made on the field, allowing Xatu to stop some setup sweepers. Shadow Ball is an option that strikes Ghost-types harder than any other move Xatu has and could find itself on an offensive Life Orb variant of Xatu. Trick + Choice Scarf can be used to cripple certain defensive walls the opponent might have and allows Xatu to act as a revenge killer before using Trick. Night Shade is an option to deal a consistent 100 damage, allowing Xatu to slowly whittle down most foes at the cost of doing nothing to Normal-types. Toxic is a status move that Xatu can put to good work as it pivots around to break down walls.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Dark-types**: Pawniard, Liepard, Sneasel, and Cacturne can KO Xatu with Dark-type STAB moves and threaten it with Pursuit, and Sucker Punch alleviates any Speed problems; however, they all need to be wary of switching in, as Xatu can damage them all with either U-turn or Heat Wave.

**Calm Mind Psychic-types**: Psychic-types such as Uxie, Musharna, and Mesprit can take some hits from Xatu's Calm Mind set assuming it lacks Signal Beam, but they need Calm Mind or super effective coverage moves such as Shadow Ball and Thunderbolt to do anything significant back.

**Super Effective Moves**: Archeops, Sneasel, Mismagius, Jynx, and Rotom are some Pokemon that carry super effective moves that can make quick work of most Xatu that haven't set up; however, Xatu often has a move that can 2HKO them or neuter them with status, making switching in sometimes difficult.

**Strong Attackers**: Strong attackers such as Magmortar and Pyroar can quickly decimate almost any Xatu, while it cannot 2HKO them in return, but Xatu can use U-turn on the switch to create a more advantageous matchup.

Not QC, but I strongly suggest putting 176 speed evs either in set details or on the main ev spread of CM xatu to outspeed max speed neutral nature base 85 mons like sawk. Also, colbur berry shouldnt be the main item, lefties is much more helpful to stay healthy while boosting.
Also, there is no need for shadow ball on the offensive set - what does it hit? Rotom? idk. Psychic / Grass Knot / Heat Wave / Roost works very well for me.
A defensive set should be added too, with max hp max def with a moveset of Thunder Wave / Roost / U-turn / Psyshock (other stuff works too).

Not QC, but I've used xatu a lot and wanted to give my input.

my comments in bold:

Overview
########
  • Access to Magic Bounce prevents it from being crippled with status, and also allows it to act as a solid anti-hazard pivot
  • Has reliable recovery in Roost
  • Colourful movepool with many options, both allowing it to fill roles such as a Calm Mind sweeper and a Pivot with U-turn
  • Bulk isn't amazing, even when invested in
  • Typing leaves it susceptible to many common attacking types, like Dark, Ghost, and Rock, which also gives it a 2x SR weakness

Moves
========
  • Psyshock is mandatory STAB, and does decent damage even when uninvested
  • Night Shade always does 100 damage, and is a reliable attack barring the Normal-Type immunity
  • U-turn allows Xatu to gain momentum, and works greatly in tandem with Magic Bounce
  • Thunder Wave spreads around Paralysis, and cripples offensive Pokemon that rely on their speed
  • Toxic is also a good option to cripple defensive walls, and can slowly wear down the opposing team
  • Roost keeps Xatu healthy and allows it to function as a great anti-hazard and anti-status pivot
Not gonna lie i am not sure of the moves that should be on this set in particuliar as i don't have as much experience with it. Grass Knot deserves to be mentionned.

Set Details
========
  • 248 HP and 252 Defense EVs allow Xatu to tank physical attacks better and lowers SR damage
  • Bold Nature maximizes Defense
  • The final 8 Evs are placed into SpD for a slight increase
  • Leftovers slightly increases Xatu's longevity
  • Magic Bounce is Xatu's main ability, as it prevents status moves like Taunt or Toxic from stopping recovery or crippling it with
Usage Tips
========
  • Xatu can bounce back hazards with Magic Bounce, but most hazard setters are Rock-Types that carry STAB moves that can easily dispatch of Xatu, so be wary
  • Stealth Rocks should be kept off the field, as Xatu will need to switch in numerous times, and Stealth Rock will hamper it by taking a 25% off each switch in, so keeping a hazard removal pokemon isn't a bad idea
  • Xatu should be used and switched in throughout the entire game, to reflect hazards and status moves whenever it gets the opportunity
  • Night Shade and Psyshock should be used to whittle down opposing Pokemon that cannot threaten Xatu, but shouldn't use the moves as much if the opponent has a Normal or Dark-Type Pokemon that can get a free switch
  • When predicting a switch in, Xatu typically has two options, it can either catch momentum with U-turn, and switch to a more favourable matchup, or use Thunder Wave / Toxic to cripple the opposing Pokemon with status
  • Against faster Pokemon that could possibly carry super effective coverage, Xatu should simply hard switch to avoid taking damage instead of using U-turn

Team Options
========
  • Gurdurr and Sawk are good partners, as Xatu has trouble with Dark and Ice-Types, such as Liepard, Sneasel, and Pawniard, which can all KO it without fearing anything
  • Hazard setters like Crustle or Rhydon are useful as Xatu often forces switches, so it can rack up SR and/or Spikes damage PhDef Xatu doesn't work on teams using Crustle lol, it works only on more balanced teams.
  • Pokemon that are susceptible to status like Feraligatr or Klinklang can take advantage of Xatu's ability to bounce back status moves like Will-o-Wisp and Thunder Wave what
  • Kabutops and Sandslash also can spin away SR, which really helps Xatu as it doesn't have to risk its life trying to bounce back hazards, and both Kabutops and Sandslash deal with Rock-Types and hazard setters with their STABs but xatu IS the entry hazard control?

  • Psychic is a standard STAB that hits decently hard after a boost
  • Psyshock is a similar STAB, but hits Pokemon from their Physical Defense stat
  • Stored Power is an option to hit ridiculously hard after a couple of boosts have been attained, and should be used in tandem with a SmashPasser
  • Heat Wave is used to KO Steel-Types that can tank Psyshock, such as Ferroseed and Klinklang
  • Giga Drain hits Rock, Water, and Ground-Types for super effective damage such as Kabutops, Siesmitoad, Rhydon and Poliwrath

  • Magic Bounce bounces back status moves, like Toxic and Will-o-Wisp which allows it to boost without the fear of being crippled by status
Usage Tips
========
  • Should be brought out late game, preferably when any counters or checks that could stop it from sweeping are weakened or KOed
  • Xatu should try to setup on Pokemon that it threatens like Weezing or Garbodor, who can't status or setup hazards on it while it's on the field
  • Xatu also shouldn't attempt to setup on Pokemon with possible damaging phazing moves like Lickilicky or Dragalge, which can bypass Magic Bounce

Checks & Counters
#########

**Dark-Types**: Pawniard, Liepard, Sneasel, and Cacturne can KO with STAB Dark-type moves, and Sucker Punch alleviates any speed problems

**Psychic-Types**: Psychic types like Musharna, Uxie, or Mesprit can easily wall Xatu's CM+Roost set, but momentum can possibly be gained of them if Xatu is running the Pivot set idgi

**Rock-Types**: Ramparados, Crustle, Rhydon, and Archeops can easily KO the CM+Roost set, and Ramparados can also set SR on it anyways thanks to Mold Breaker, but they can't switch in on a +1 Giga Drain or Psychic

**Ice Types**: Jynx, Cryogonal and Sneasel can KO Xatu with their STAB Ice Attacks and easily outspeed it

**Electric-Types**: Specially Defensive Lanturn, Rotom, Electivire, and Luxray can all take an attack from either sets and deal massive damage in return with their STAB attacks, and have the added bonus of being immune to Thunder Wave which helps them switch in on Xatu's Pivot set

I am sure I missed something. I will remove my qc reject for now tho, but please fix this. Tagging Deej Dy which iirc has lots of experience with Xatu and I am sure he will be able to help with the EV spreads / bulky set

Defensive Weezing teams well with Xatu to tank hits as well as hariyama which can take ice/rock hits and any special hits Xatu can't without a CM up. A ground type is also needed vs very common rotom teams which can come in and shift momentum with volt-switch. (include rhydon,bulky rock types in counters as heatwave and psyshock are standard for CM xatu)

I would also like to mention Rocky Helmet as an item for the Phys defensive set. Also a trick scarf set is quite good (should be actual pivot imo)

This was just a quick write-up on my part, any specific questions I'd be glad to answer.

TheEpicBro this needs to be updated for ORAS, there's a couple mentions of banned mons and the sets could use some touching up for this meta

The pivot set should have Leftovers / Rocky Helmet as the item (with Colbur maybe slashed if anyone's used that, but I haven't). I personally also don't think Night Shade is worth it over Psychic specifically. The latter is super important to deal maximum damage to Gurdurr and Vileplume. I wouldn't mind it slashed with the status moves since I liked Psychic / Night Shade / Roost / U-turn most of the time when I was using this, but the rest of QC can chime in too

Dazzling Gleam on CM should be replaced with Signal Beam, Pangoro is banned and hitting Malamar is important. I doubt Rocky Helmet should get a slash on CM too, should be replaced with Colbur

Both sets should also use some Speed imo, idk what other people run but I use 56 to beat out max Speed base 70s

Calm Mind is probably the best set, and you should talk about why to use Heat Wave vs. Dazzling Gleam in ORAS (Mega Steelix vs. Malamar). Also Rocky Helmet makes eons more sense on a pivot set than on Calm Mind.

Moves
========
  • Psychic is mandatory STAB, and does decent damage even when uninvested
  • Night Shade always does 100 damage, and is a reliable attack barring the Normal-Type immunity
  • U-turn allows Xatu to gain momentum, and works greatly in tandem with Magic Bounce
  • Thunder Wave spreads around Paralysis, and cripples offensive Pokemon that rely on their speed
  • Toxic is also a good option to cripple defensive walls, and can slowly wear down the opposing team
  • Roost keeps Xatu healthy and allows it to function as a great anti-hazard and anti-status pivot
  • Grass Knot is an option to KO common SR setters like Seismitoad and Rhydon
- Mention Psychic allows Xatu to better respond to Fighting- and Poison-types, such as Gurdurr, Weezing, Garbodor, Vileplume...
- Mention Night Shade gives Xatu better matchup against Psychic-resistant hazard users, such as Ferroseed, Uxie, and Mega Steelix.
- Giga Drain is probably better for Xatu since it restores health, which is preferable for pivot Xatu than extra damage.
Team Options
========
  • Gurdurr and Sawk are good partners, as Xatu has trouble with Dark and Ice-Types, such as Liepard, Sneasel, and Pawniard, which can all KO it without fearing anything
  • Rhydon is a good partner as it resists Rock and is immune Electric-Type attacks, and prevents any momentum from Volt-Switch from Pokemon such as Rotom
  • Lanturn is a good partner, as it is one of the only Pokemon to resist the Ice/Electric combo which hits Xatu for super effective damage, while Xatu resists Grass and is immune to Ground. In addition, they both form a decent Volt-Turn core, while Lanturn also shuts down opposing Volt-Turn cores with Volt absorb
  • Physically Defensive Granbull is a solid partner, as it can take Dark and Rock-Type moves very well, and can also punish foes with Rocky Helmet damage to wear them down
  • Grass-Types like Lilligant or Sceptile resist Electric-Type moves and are useful to take on bulky Rock-Types which Xatu can struggle to KO
- The Fighting-types resist Rock-type moves as well.
- Rocky Helmet Granbull is a thing? In any case, its truly relevant resistance is Dark since actual Rock-type moves are rare.
- Liepard and Sneasel make good partners for Xatu ironically enough, as they can make quick work of Ghost-types and opposing Psychic-types while having their Fighting weakness covered by Xatu. Liepard can also use U-turn, while Sneasel appreciates Xatu denying the opponent's entry hazards.
- Sceptile mention :P
- What about mons with hazard issues, such as Typhlosion, Scyther, Pyroar, Sneasel, etc... Don't they make use of Xatu's hazard prevention also?

Moves
========
  • Calm Mind allows Xatu to boost its uninvested Special Attack and Special Defense, which allows it to sweep after enough boosts have been attained
  • Roost recovers 50% of its HP, and keeps it healthy throughout the match and helps it acquire more boosts
  • Psyshock is STAB, and hits Pokemon from their Physical Defense stat
  • Stored Power is an option to hit ridiculously hard after a couple of boosts have been attained, and should be used in tandem with a SmashPasser
  • Heat Wave is used to KO Steel-Types that can tank Psyshock, such as Ferroseed and Klinklang
  • Dazzling Gleam is mainly used to hit Dark-Types, such as Malamar and Pangoro
  • Giga Drain is an option hits Rock, Water, and Ground-Types for super effective damage such as Kabutops, Siesmitoad, Rhydon and Poliwrath
- Mention that Stored Power is very weak when unboosted, and often needs at least two boosts to start doing real damage.
- Mention that Psyshock / Stored Power is favored over Psychic as they give Xatu the edge during Calm Mind wars. Psyshock also nails Cryogonal hard.
- Replace Dazzling Gleam with Signal Beam; Panda is gone, hits Malamar harder, and hits opposing Psychic-types like Uxie and Mesprit.
- You don't need Giga Drain for most of these threats, plus Heat Wave / Signal Beam offer much more valuable coverage.

Set Details
=======
  • 248 HP EVs minimizes SR damage, and 252 Def increases its Physical Defense and reduce SR damage
  • Remaining 8 EVs are to put in SpD for a slight increase
  • Bold Nature is used to maximize Defense
  • Leftovers provides slight recovery
  • Rocky Helmet punishes physical attacks by 1/8 of the attackers HP
  • Magic Bounce bounces back status moves, like Toxic and Will-o-Wisp which allows it to boost without the fear of being crippled by status
- First off, Rocky Helmet deals 1/6; second, not sure why this is on the CM set and not the pivot set which can make better use of / needs the residual damage.
- Btw, Magic Guard also stops things like Leech Seed and Whirlwind which will interfere with setup, but note that it does not stop indirect status from the likes of Scald and Sludge Bomb.

Usage Tips
========
  • Dark and Ice-Types should be eliminated before setting up, as Xatu is liable to get KOed by Pokemon like Sneasel, Pawniard and Jynx before it even gets a chance to use Calm Mind
  • CM Xatu can trample on most stall teams due to Magic Bounce negating any phazing and status efforts
- Dragalge mention.
- Mention Xatu needs to tread more carefully when setting up against threats with damaging status moves, such as Scald and Sludge Bomb.

Team Options
========
  • Sawk and Gurdurr can defeat Dark-Types and Steel-Types like Pawniard and Klinklang, who Xatu can't touch if it lacks Heat Wave
  • Lanturn can take Ice and Electric-Type attacks, and can KO Rock-Types with STAB Water-Type moves, and help Xatu get in safely with Volt Switch
  • Pawniard is a good partner as it can use STAB Knock Off and Sucker punch to deal with Psychic-Types that Xatu can't sufficiently hurt during its setup
  • Gorebyss has accept to Shell Smash+Baton Pass, and since Xatu can't be phazed out or crippled with Paralysis and has access to a ridiculously powerful Stored Power, they make good partners
  • Hariyama can tank Rock and Ice-Type moves aimed at Xatu, and is also bulky enough to take most special attacks that Xatu can't survive without any Calm Minds up
  • Weezing easily tanks any physical move thrown at Xatu and can respond with Will-O-Wisp, while Xatu can take any Psychic-Type attacks
- Pawniard is not the only Dark-type around; Liepard and Sneasel make good partners too. Also note on other synergies between Xatu and the aforementioned Dark-types.

Checks & Counters
#########

**Dark-Types**: Pawniard, Liepard, Sneasel, and Cacturne can KO with STAB Dark-type moves, and Sucker Punch alleviates any speed problems

**Psychic-Types**: Psychic-Types such as Uxie, or Mesprit can easily wall Xatu's CM+Roost set, and can strike back hard with super effective moves, or just setup alongside Xatu

**Rock-Types**: Ramparados, Crustle, Rhydon, and Archeops can easily tank any hit from the CM+Roost set, and Ramparados can also set SR on it anyways thanks to Mold Breaker.

**Ice-Types**: Jynx, Cryogonal and Sneasel easily outspeed Xatu and can KO it with their STAB Ice-Type attacks

- Dark-types also carry the threat of Pursuit, which makes switching out a risk in itself for Xatu,
- The Psychic-types do not inherently beat Xatu (standard support Uxie gets walled by Xatu). Mention what moves they need in order to defeat Xatu, and add Musharna to this list.
- More offensive Rock-types, such as Kabutops and Barbaracle, can also threaten Xatu. Note that some of the Rock-types fear a Grass-type move nailing them hard.
- Cryogonal actually loses to the Calm Mind set. While Aurorus does not outspeed Xatu (unless Aurorus runs Timid), it can overpower Xatu like the other Ice-types.
- Luxray is not very relevant. You can probably replace it with Raichu.

Also QC thoughts (Dat Blast & hollywood) on an alternative spread with speed investment on both sets? A Psychic-type with good speed had better damn well function as a Sawk check at least.

yea I've been running more Xatu lately and I like running enough Speed for Jolly Sawk a lot. I also prefer Colbur over the current items listed for most teams because it lets you not get destroyed by every Fighting-type. It's still not a counter to like any Fighting-type, but it's a really good check to most of them. Calm Mind should definitely have the extra Speed as well. I'm pretty sure the spread is like 248 HP / 84 Def / 176 Speed Timid, but I might be off by a little bit. Colbur can probably go in Set Details for CM too.

Can attest to fast Xatu's effectiveness (aka holly's spread), but different Xatus fit on different teams. Fast Xatus would fit better on slower, bulkier teams that are more threatened by Sawk, with the speed investment preventing Sawk from overrunning the team. On the other hand, more offensive teams actually prefer bulky Xatus as they appreciate a more solid Fighting-type switch-in (particularly Hariyama which tanks hits and hits frail sweepers hard), and the increase in bulk allows Xatu to stallbreak better which is yet another asset offensive teams like.

also hollywood Soulgazer 16 Speed EVs allows Xatu to outspeed positive base 55s aka Cacturne and Exeggutor which seems like a cheap enough investment, but is it actually worth it? The speed is useful to KO Dark Pulse Cacturne before it attacks, but Roosting before they attack can also backfire since Xatu takes their Grass STABs (their best / next best attack against Xatu) for full neutral damage. Is it still a good idea to try outrunning them? Oh yeah the speed investment also allows Xatu to outrun neutral base 65s which hit the same speed as positive 55s, if that means anything.

Yeah I like bulky Xatu too (though I use 56 > 16 for Samurott and Ludicolo), the extra bulk is really nice especially when you're running Rocky Helmet. I'm fine with holly's spread being the main one and bulky getting a heavy mention in Set Details, but bulky Xatu is definitely good too (at least on the pivot set, I don't have much experience with CM)

Virizion and Heliolisk should be mentioned, as Xatu counters Stone Edge lacking Virizion (which idk how common that is but still) and also can switch into its stabs but must be wary of Stone Edge. Heliolisk doesnt like switching in, but threatens out Xatu or KOs it.

184 HP / 148 Def / 176 Spe Timid takes physical hits a pretty good amount better than the current spread does at the cost of taking special hits slightly less well. Vileplume's Sludge Bomb still rarely 2HKOs unless it poisons, and you easily 3HKO physically defensive sets with Heat Wave even after a few rounds of Black Sludge recovery.
