Xbox Live Help

okay, so i just got an xbox 360 and i have been having a fairly good time messing around with the campaign modes in Halo and Orange Box, but I would really like to get hooked up to live so that i can take advantage of the real bulk of the games. unfortunately, the layout of my house makes getting xbox live seem impossible to someone as uniformed as i am. heres the deal:

i have a three story house. my only computer along with my modem and all of that fun stuff is located on the top floor. my tv and my xbox are located on the bottom floor. i DO NOT want to run a cable down two flights of stairs and through 10+ rooms, nor do i want to go into something really complex and run cables through my walls to get to the bottom floor. my house is very old, so there is a big metal beam in the bottom floor's ceiling that eats up all wireless signals (even cell phones dont work down there) so wireless is out as well. fortunately, there is a little modem plug hole dealy (i'm not sure what they are called) on the bottom floor, so the method shown here:

seems like the best idea. how would i go about doing this and what are the downsides of doing it that way?
thanks so much.

Well, you have two choices. You named both and both are out of the question. Running wires seems to be your OLNY choice though. I'd find a way to do that.

Wireless and Wired are seriously the only two ways it can happen. For you wireless is impossible, making wired your only choice.

mhh. so if that is really my only alternative, i have a new question:

is it worth getting an Xbox 360 for the single player and local multiplayer aspects alone?

In my opinion, yes and no. Xbox Live Marketplace is awesome and one of the greatest parts about the 360. However, All I ever really play on the 360 is single player games, or co-op games, so I think it should be fine. The only times I really used my Gold subscription were to play co-op Halo 3, co-op Gears of War, and some multiplayer Halo 3 and Worms.
