XY OU Team 2

Not that long ago I posted the first real competitive team I ever created (that team can be found here: http://www.smogon.com/forums/threads/xy-ou-threat-checking-team.3506035/)

The suggestions made worked well, but after a while, I decided to play around a little and create another team. Keep in mind this team will probably need a lot of work, however let me know what you think and what I can do to improve this team/any future teams

Thundurus: The reason I chose Thundurus is because I ran into on on the OU ladder and I had always thought it was Uber. Apparently not, so I decided to choose it as the pokemon for the team. So far this build for Mr. Spiky Dick has worked out extremely well. Thunder Wave allows a chance to predict a switch in and paralyze a Pokemon and his prankster ability also gives him a nice priority boost over other pokemon. While not that accurate, I prefer the power that Thundurus packs with Thunder. With his 125 Base Special attack and 111 speed (correct me if I'm wrong) Thundurus packs an incredible Punch. HP Ice is around for coverage, while Hammer Arm can also cover those pesky Ttar's running around in PS! At the suggestion of User: Drew Pickles, I changed Hammer Arm on Thundurus to Taunt.

Terrakion: So I've always enjoyed Terrakion, and I decided to try and fit him into this team anyway I could. I don't need to tell you guys about his base attack, because I'm sure you all know how incredibly powerful it is, with Choice Banded moves, Terrakion is just a matter of predicting correctly and doing massive damage on a switch in. Close Combat and Stone Edge make for powerful STAB moves, while X-Scissor (100% accuracy) can pound on Psychic types, and Sacred Sword is around for STAB if I'm don't want to lower Terrakion's defense. Also at the behest of Pickles, I changed Terrakion from Banded to Scarfed in order to increase his speed since my team was pretty slow.

Latias: At the suggestion of Toxins I also swapped out Crawdaunt in order to counter Mega-Venasaur who kicked my ass in a few OU matches. The build I use is the exact one that he suggested, however the only difference is that I ditched Calm Mind. Since she is maxed out in the Specially defensive stat, I decided to experiment with other options for a fourth move, however right now I decided to run EQ.

MarcoPoleon: I got the name from an old Blame Truth video (who is an amazing pokemon battler if you haven't seen him yet), but this pokemon is no joke. I went with Empoleon as a special wall due to all of its resistances. Stealth Rock is always something I go straight to set up when there is no rapid spinner. Scald is pretty self explanatory, STAB water move, plus chance for a burn was something I couldn't pass up. Even though it's specially defensive, it has a decent SAtt stat that helps it deal decent amounts of damage. Ice beam lets me injure grass switch ins like Shaymin very well, while Roar allows me to predict switch ins and roar them immediately out of it. Not much to say about Marco, he does his job very well.

Mandibuzz: Cofagrius didn't have the right kind of energy that the rest of my team did, so Mandibuzz found its way to my team. I've always been a fan of Mandibuzz and was thrilled to insert him into the team. I gave him the standard moveset, however since Thundurus is already running Taunt should I change it out for something else? And is Toxic a good idea to run on Mandi? Foul Play for STAB and Psychic coverage, while Defog is there to boost Defiant Bisharp.

Bisharp: Pickles suggested that I run Defog on Bisharp? I'll assume he meant Mandibuzz. I'm not sure if he meant to run it on someone else, however as Bisharp cannot learn Defog. Instead I decided to use the basic SD set. Sucker Punch and Iron Head STAB, while Iron Head flinches opponents (and is always annoying), can also be set up behind a substitute to stall other pokemon out. Bisharp has become invaluable to this team, today he Iron Head flinched a mega-Scizor that would have murdered me before setting up a SD and sweeping out 4 more pokemon so Thundurus could HP ice a Breloom to death. Thanks for the suggestion Drew Pickles!

So those are the changes I made, I also left my former teammates at the bottom so you can take a look and let me know what you think!

Also while not very common, I ran into a Quagsire who stalled me out and set up the rest of his team to sweep 4 straight pokemon. I didn't have any STAB grass (or any grass moves for that matter) to counter him, and I know that Rotom-W is also popular and only weak to grass, so is there a change I could potentially make in order to counter that? Is Energy Ball a good idea to run on Latias?

342.gif

Sharp Pinch (Crawdaunt) (F) @ Life Orb
Ability: Adaptability
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Atk / 252 Spd
Adamant Nature
- Waterfall
- Crunch
- Superpower
- Dragon Dance
Crawdaunt: Ah, this choice was around the idea of switching into Psychic pokemon because of his immunity before scaring them out. It goes without saying, Adaptibility (boosts STAB modifier to 2x) is why she made the team. That bonus STAB works wonders. I chose Waterfall over Aqua Jet because C-Daunt is already slowed and I wanted the extra power. Crunch is also a great STAB move, however I'm not sure if I should swap it with Knock Off. Knock Off got a nice boost to it's base damage, however I'm not sure which is more helpful. I use Superpower to deal with a lot of the walls on other teams to tear away their defensive options and force them to play a riskier game. Toxic is up as the last move slot in order to continuously injure walls like Tangrowth that she can't get through. It was also pointed out that running Toxic on a banded Crawdaunt was a bad move, so I changed it to be that of your standard DD set.

th_cofagrigus_animated_sprite_by_devinwarriors-d38je4n.gif

King Tut (Cofagrigus) @ Leftovers
Ability: Mummy
EVs: 252 HP / 48 Def / 210 SDef
Calm Nature
- Will-O-Wisp
- Shadow Ball
- Pain Split
- Knock Off
Cofargius: I was nearing the last of my teams slots before I realized I didn't have a dedicated physical wall. I decided to go with the coffin pokemon due to the fact that I feel he is very underrated and comes as a surprise to most teams. Pokemon who make physical contact with this wall gets mummy negating whatever its current ability is, which can be a life saver. Thankfully Ghost types can hit Steel neutrally now, so that helps King Tut's place on this team. Will-o-Wisp adds to this by clipping the balls of those Steel walls like ferrothorn and Klefki (who I see a lot nowadays), while Shadow Ball is around for a decent STAB move, and so I don't become Taunt bate (like knock off). Pain Split is annoying as hell, so of course I decided to incorporate it into his moveset. It helps wittle away at other pokemons health before someone can come in and sweep them out. Finally, I was deciding between Toxic and Knock Off for his final move. I decided on Knock Off because I hadn't included it on Crawdaunt and I think it's a valuable move, while Crawdaunt already has Toxic.

abomasnow-mega.gif

Little BigFoot (Abomasnow) @ Abomasite
Ability: Snow Warning
Shiny: Yes
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 SAtk
Brave Nature
- Ice Shard
- Energy Ball
- Earthquake
- Leech Seed

Abomasnow: This guy is never prepared for by most teams in the OU ladder. His Mega Evolution gave him a good boost to be even more competitive this time around, and I enjoy having an Ice STAB pokemon on my team. While its typing makes it bad defensively, I usually bring in Abomasnow as a real late game sweeper. Grass has gained a nice boost this gen, and Energy Ball works well in KO'ing Rotom-W and Manaphy's that have popped up on a lot of teams. Ice Shards priority (even though he has terrible speed) helps as a decent STAB move, however I've considered running a Trick room set with someone else in order to account for this weakness and give Abomasnow the help he needs. Earthquake is also a great physical coverage move for Abomasnow to have in its arsenal, while Leech Seed helps sap opponents strength and restore Aboma's health.

Hammer Arm on Thundurus seems silly to me. Maybe run Taunt instead?

Your team seems to lack speed. You might try running a Scarf instead of a Band on Terrakion.

Four of your Pokemon are in tiers below OU (Crawdaunt, Abomasnow, Cofagrigus, Empoleon). While there are certainly great OU teams that use 1 or 2 non-OU Pokemon, you're likely going to be disappointed using a team where two-thirds of the Pokemon aren't even in the tier. You might try some of them with other options. For instance, running Abomasnow in particular seems very pointless. Your team is not built around Hail, and that is essentially the only reason to run Abomasnow.

Running Toxic on Crawdaunt with a Choice Band is, pardon my French, fucking retarded. Take off Toxic, and add a fourth attacking move. Or ditch the Band all together and try a Dragon Dance set, which I think would work better than a Choice Band.

I actually like your Empoleon set. While it's not in OU, and therefore probably outclassed by something else, you have a good set.

Since you already have Stealth Rock. Maybe replace one Pokemon with Bisharp. You could switch it into Defog and get an attack boost with Defiant. It would be great for your team. Perhaps try replacing Abomasnow with Bisharp.

I'm not a fan of Cofagrigus, but it's difficult to think of a replacement. You are on the right track by putting a Ghost Type since your team is weak to Fighting otherwise. At least Cofagrigus helps you spread Status and Knock Off items. I suppose Cofagrigus can stay, but honestly it's difficult for me to take any OU team with Cofagrigus seriously. Gengar might be an option to consider, but you will have a hard time keeping it alive. You could also try Mandibuzz as a Defensive Wall, but you'd obviously lose the Ghost Typing.

Overall, your team has many, many problems. This is surprising because your first team looks somewhat competent. Honestly, I'm not a fan of your team the way it is. You have quite a bit of work to do. I'm sorry my suggestions are rather vague, but I'm struggling to figure out where to even begin with your team.

I'd say switch Abomasnow to Bisharp. Change your Crawdaunt set to Dragon Dance. Switch to a Scarf on Terrakion. Ditch Hammer Arm for Taunt on Thundurus. And that's just off the top my head.

Forget my last comment, I'm going to make the changes you suggested. I agree with Mandibuzz, I always enjoy having one on my team to counter those damn Aegislash's, and I'll let you know how it turns out!

The only problem I've had with the new additions is a mega venesaur, maybe it's because I didn't get the para hax, but even after T-waving, that thing swept Thundurus, Terrakion, and Empoleon. Any suggestions to counter that?

No, I said Bisharp can switch into Defog to get an attack boost from Defiant. I never said to teach Bisharp Defog.

Mandibuzz should get Defog.

Mega Venusaur is a tough Pokemon to counter. I know, that's why I use it. You're going to have to cut one Pokemon (most likely either Crawdaunt or Terrakion) and replace it with a strong Psychic or Flying attacker. It's the only way your team is going to be able to take down a Mega Venusaur. I've had the same problem in the past, so I understand your frustration.

Options to consider: Mega Alakazam, Heatran, Tornadus-T, Talonflame, Skarmory, Latios, Latias. However, be wary that some Mega-Venusaur run HP Fire or Earthquake.

Whichever one you choose is up to you.

Also, I just now noticed you have Thunder on Thunderus. Personally, I would switch that to Thunderbolt to remove the accuracy risk. Thunder really only makes sense on rain teams.

Man, your team seriously hates fighting types, especially things like Conkeldurr.

I'd agree with Drew in saying that you need a mega venusaur check, and with that fighting weakness, I would run a latios or latias ( Mega venu really can't touch them most of the time.)

For this specific situaton, I would run a latias (more special bulk, since venusaur likes to be specially invested.)

Latias Leftovers

Ability: Levitate

Nature: Calm

EVs: 252 HP, 252 SpD, 4 SpA

Moveset:

-Roost
-Psyshock
-Calm Mind
-Dragon Pulse

With this set, it would be quite easy to take on a mega venusaur. Although calm mind and running Max SpD seems redundant, so I'm not sure exactly what ability should be ran in this situation.

But, that's all I've got for now.

Thanks guys, I decided to cut Crawdaunt and use the Latias set Toxins suggested since Mandibuzz covers Dark and Empoleon can cover that water-typing. I'm currently experimenting with several different options for that fourth slot. However with the release of mega latios and latias, do you feel that evolution would be more effective? However does the change to Dragon/Fairy make it more vulnerable to Venesaur? Should I just stay with Latias?
