[SET]
(HP, Def) Zapdos @ Heavy-Duty Boots
Ability: Static
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD
Tera Type: Steel
Bold Nature
- Hurricane
- Roost
- Discharge / Thunder Wave
- U-turn / Volt Switch
[SET COMMENTS]
Zapdos is a reliable physically defensive pivot in Godly Gift, taking advantage of an HP or Defense donation alongside its typing to check physical attackers like Zacian-C and Ogerpon. Heavy-Duty Boots allows it to ignore entry hazards, letting it repeatedly switch in throughout the game to check threats and generate momentum. Hurricane prevents Zapdos from being overly passive. Discharge can be used alongside U-turn to enable pivoting on Ground-types, while Thunder Wave can be used with Volt Switch to more consistently paralyze foes. Static further punishes contact moves, potentially crippling physical attackers like Zamazenta and Roaring Moon. Tera Steel improves Zapdos’s defensive profile significantly, granting key resistances to Rock- and Ice-type moves and allowing it to better handle threats such as Weavile and Calyrex-Ice, while Tera Grass mainly functions to check Ogerpon-W, although it also helps against foes like Zekrom.
Zapdos fits best on balance and bulky offense teams that value a durable pivot and physical blanket check. It usually pairs well with higher HP or Defense donations such as Lunala or Kyurem-W's HP or Calyrex-Ice's Defense. Zapdos naturally forms strong cores with bulky teammates such as Galarian Slowking, Ting-Lu, and Great Tusk, which can handle special attackers that Zapdos struggles with. In return, Zapdos can switch into Ground-type moves aimed at them and bring them in safely with its pivoting moves. Frailer wallbreakers like Weavile and Ogerpon greatly appreciate Zapdos’s ability to bring them in safely, allowing them more opportunities to break through opposing teams. Zapdos's ability to consistently spread paralysis is also appreciated by slower teammates, such as Calm Mind Lunala and Swords Dance Excadrill. Also, as Zapdos is vulnerable to hazards without Heavy-Duty Boots, it appreciates having either teammates that can absorb Knock Off like Clefable and Landorus-T, or hazard removal such as the aforementioned Great Tusk.
