YOU TURN
So I’ve only been playing this game for about 3 months now, and I’ve found success in sand, rain, and even trick room teams. I’ve laddered to about #120-150 on PO with each type of team and called the team successful. I was getting bored of the same old generic types of teams, so I figured I’d create something new. This is my first hyper offensive team. I’ve never like choice pokemon, so I figured I’d give them a try. 5 of them, in fact. That’s right, I made a team with 5 choiced pokemon. 3 scarves, 1 specs, 1 band. The idea was that if everything I had could out speed the opponent and u-turn or volt switch to the whatever counter was necessary, then my team would be uncounterable. I really didn’t think this gimmick team would work. I couldn’t have been more wrong. I have gotten so many 6-0’s it’s not even funny. So here’s my team:
Scizor (M) @ Choice Band
Ability: Technician
EVs: 252 HP / 252 Atk / 4 Spe
Nature: Adamant (+Atk / -Spa)
- U-turn
- Superpower
- Bullet Punch
- Pursuit
Everyone knows CB Scizor. He’s a menace. This Scizor adds some much needed power to the team and is useful when it is not necessary to out speed the opponent. His natural bulk comes in handy as well. U-turn is for obvious reasons. Bullet punch is for much needed priority, and is great for OHKOing tyrannitar that think they can out speed and fireblast. Scizor takes Draco Meteor from LO Latios like a champ, and can revenge with bullet punch, or pursuit. Superpower is for the obvious and predictable switch to heatran to take the u-turn/bullet punch. It is also useful as his most powerful neutral attack.
Thundurus (M) @ Choice Specs
Ability: Prankster
EVs: 252 Spa / 252 Spe / 4 Def
Nature: Naive (+Spe / - Spd)
- Volt Switch
- U-turn
- Hidden Power (Ice)
- Grass Knot
With Scizor dishing out powerful hits on the physical side, I figured I should have one for the special side. I went with specs over scarf because thundurus has enough speed to out speed most things anyway, and the extra power is appreciated. Like with most of my pokes, 90% of the time I will use volt switch. If I see no ground type in team preview, then this guy is almost always my lead. Volt Switch does massive damage, but I will use u-turn if I’m not yet ready to predict the switch to a ground type and want to play it safe. Additionally, u-turn helps beat celebi, which most thundurus can’t do. Hidden Power Ice and grass knot are the predicted switches to ground types like gliscor and gastrodon respectively.
Infernape (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Blaze
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 Spa / 252 Spe
Nature: Naughty (+ Atk / - Spd)
- U-turn
- Close Combat
- Overheat
- Stone Edge
If I’m not leading with thundurus, Infernape is usually my next choice. Infernape with a choice scarf is unexpected and can punch holes in teams with his STABs. Early game, I will almost always U-turn so that I can get a feel for my opponent’s strategy. Overheat obviously kills most physical walls. Close Combat is STAB and lets me sweep late game very easily after everything is weakened by the constant u-turns and volt switches. Stone edge provides valuable coverage, although I usually don’t use it due to its horrible accuracy. It does, however, let me beat chandelure and volcarona very handily.
Rotom-W @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 4 HP / 252 Spa / 252 Spe
Nature: Modest (+Spa / - Atk)
- Volt Switch
- Hydro Pump
- Trick
- Will-o-wisp
Rotom-W is an amazing counter to all forms of weather. His STABs work very nicely together. If I see the opponent has a ground type, the washing machine will usually be my lead. Predicting switches to ferrothorn is very easy and that’s what trick and will-o-wisp are for (each depending on my mood). They have other uses, but disabling ferrothorns is the most fun. Volt Switch is the reason for this team, and does very nice damage to everything not ground or grass. Hydro pump lets me scare away gliscor early game so I can safely volt switch and then kill them on the switch in the late game. Having a bulky fire resist is very useful as well.
Landorus (M) @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Force
EVs: (252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe)
Nature: Adamant (+ Atk / - Spa)
- U-turn
- Earthquake
- Stone edge
- Brick Break
Probably the most expendable one on the team. I usually win without even sending him out. His best asset is his ability to defeat excadrill at +2 (assuming full health)(rockslide i've seen does only around 70%). Against sand teams he gains immense power. U-turn is obvious. Earthquake is for STAB, and stone edge is for coverage. Both get a great boost in the sand. Brick break is to beat balloons more easily. Not much else to say. I’ll happily drop him for something better.
Forretress (M) @ Leftovers
Ability: Sturdy
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Def / 252 Spd
Nature: Calm (-Atk / +Spd)
- Volt Switch
- Spikes
- Stealth Rock
- Rapid Spin
Forretress is the most crucial member of this team. Without a rapid spinner, I would be toast. This team switches just about every turn, so the entry hazards really rack up. Sometimes I’ll sacrifice this poke just to get a rapid spin in with sturdy. His ability to lay his own hazards is just as crucial. Because I am switching every turn, so too must my opponent. The damage really goes sky high even with just stealth rocks. Volt switch is to fit with the theme of the team. It is extremely useful to have a slow volt switch because that allows me to switch to a glass cannon without that cannon taking a hit. It is specially defensive to make sure it is not beaten by random mixed sets. It also allows it to set up on specs latios locked in meteor. Most often, this guy will set up on things like ferrothorn and bronzing that can’t hurt it, and then rapid spin and volt switch.
So there you have it, my switching team. Notice the scarfers do not have speed boosting natures. I found this unnecessary as they outspeed everything anyway (except for enemy scarfers, which are easy to predict with my team). The extra power is useful. I’m open to any suggestions, just try to keep the theme going. I want all my pokes to have u-turn or volt switch. It’s surprisingly effective. Maybe hydreigon, victini, azelf, darmanitan, etc
THANK YOU!
