Introduction
Ok well this is my first RMT on Smogon, I started this team 3 weeks ago and after a few moves have been having increasing success, but i'm still new to the metagame and could use some guidance. This is the generation of weather teams and I decided to stay away from drought or drizzle, and use good old tyranitar and sand stream. I like the residual damage done by sand stream that sun and rain don't offer, I also feel that there are more benefits brought from the sand then either sun or rain. It was an easier decision because of the fact that I've always felt Tyranitar as one of the best pokemon in existence, and one of my favorites of all time, so I built the team around the dinosaur and have been hoping for the best.

Vegeta @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Sand Stream
Nature: Jolly
- Earthquake
- Stone Edge
- Crunch
- Superpower
252 Atk | 252 Spe | 4 SpD
I decided to lead with Tyranitar, Sand Stream almost always breaks sashes and gives me the OHKO after one of his powerful moves, Choice Scarf, Jolly, and the EV's let him outspeed any 115 base speed pokemon. I wanted a lead that would be useful later in the game which is exactly what Tyranitar is, the choice means he switches a lot and can stay out of trouble that way, and because he switches a lot I went with Superpower on the set to give him coverage and another powerful move, and Crunch over Pursuit because I've found that a lot more pokemon aren't running away from him and the extra power is needed.
Goku @ Leftovers
Ability: Sand Force
Nature: Hasty
- Earthquake
- Rock Slide
- Swords Dance
- Hidden Power [Ice]
252 Atk | 252 Spe | 4 SpA
With the sand I needed a pokemon who would directly benefit from it, it was between Landorus and Excadrill for both of their amazing sweeping potential, but Landorus had typing that paired up better with Tyranitar then Excadrill. The Swords Dance set got my attention right away, combined with sand force makes his earthquake the most powerful attack on the team, HP ice for dragons like Garchomp, I went with Rock Slide over Stone Edge because of the reliability, even though the power is missed, those flinches can make up for it.
Buu @ Choice Scarf
Ability: Imposter
Nature: Relaxed
- Transform
- Hidden Power [Fire]
252 HP | 252 Def | 4 SpD
Without any legitimate walls or phazers I needed a way to deal with pokemon that get away with there set up moves and that would otherwise wreck my team, Ditto is possibly the best at that. This way I don't mind watching Excadrill Swords Dance, Chandelure Calm Mind, Volcarona Quiver Dance, or any dragon Dragon Dance. He gives me a lot of momentum in battles that are seemingly going the other way. The hidden power was a toss up between fire and ice, either have turned out to be of little use though.
Mr. Popo @ Leftovers
Ability: Regenerator
Nature: Calm
- Surf
- Ice Beam
- Shadow Ball
- Grass Knot
252 HP | 104 SpA | 152 SpD
I needed more special coverage on the team, and somebody who could take water and fire attacks, and fighting to a lesser extent. Slowbro has a great ability and decent enough bulk so he can get off those super effective attacks, a lot of the reason I used him was because of his special movepool which gives me attacking types I lacked. The EV's are mostly random, I wanted some bulk on the special side.
Gohan @ Leftovers
Ability: Pressure
Nature: Modest
- Thunderbolt
- Heat Wave
- Roost
- Hidden Power [Ice]
252 SpA | 112 Def | 144 SpD
Zapdos is another one of my favorite pokemon, his resistance to fighting, and bug are big to my team and especially tyranitar, heat wave is a big reason I wanted zapdos, because my team lacks fire type coverage. The EV's are randomly placed to give him some bulk over speed.
Trunks @ Life Orb
Ability: Technician
Nature Adamant
- Fake Out
- Sucker Punch
- Mach Punch
- Close Combat
252 HP | 252 Atk | 4 Spe
After seeing all of the scarf pokemon run circles around my team I decided I needed some priority, Hitmontop is my main weapon against genesect who otherwise destroys this team. Fake out, then either Mach Punch or sucker punch combined with sandstorm damage really wears down opponents, which makes hitmontop a huge part of my team.
Genesect is the main threat to this team, especially the scarfed versions, U-Turn dents most of my team and its hard to risk switching landorus or zapdos in for fear of Ice Beam. I try to get hitmontop in and abuse priority to take him down, if that doesn't work I use ditto.
