Not gonna do predicts, just wanted to highlight some SS matchups/storylines I think are interesting.
1. Drud (To Pimp a Butterfree) vs. kay (Fiery Flamencos)
kay is the premier builder in this tournament and I think that always makes his games an attraction. His understanding of the metagame is second-to-none and it tends to overshadow his in-game skill. I think people generally underrate him as a pilot, but last week was a pretty rough showing for him despite getting the win. He made some questionable decisions - like going to Gurdurr too early and risking Shedinja vs. Rhydon - so I’m interested to see if he’ll bounce back and outplay a really strong opponent in Drud.
2. Tuthur (Humilau Hakamo-os) vs. yovan33321 (Lucky Stunkys)
This matchup is really interesting to me. Tuthur probably has better knowledge of the metagame and is a really solid pilot. He won on a 50/50 play last week, but beating czim - who is one of the best pilots among ZU mains - is a testament to his skill.
The team he brought last week was unconventional, but his compositions tend to be straightforward and balanced, and he does a good job accounting for a variety of threats with his cores. I think that should give him an edge this week, but yovan’s unorthodox building and in-game decision-making makes him dangerous.
Ultimately, I think Tuthur pulls this one out, but I can’t rule out yovan gaining a favorable matchup with some off-meta stuff. Styles breed fights, and this one should be a lot of fun to watch.
3. Feliburn (Humilau Hakamo-os) vs. TJ (Lucky Stunkys)
This is another highlight of the week. Feliburn brought a really cool bird spam team in his matchup vs. the Morpeek-a-boos’ very own AstilCodex last week, so I’m intrigued to see what he comes up with this week. He’s also just a really good player, and so is TJ, who would have won last week were it not for a late-game Volt Switch crit.
This would be a highlight matchup based on the caliber of the players alone, but I think there’s some bonus intrigue here based on what happened last week.
4. A possible Morpeek-a-boos redemption arc
Insert disclaimer about personal bias here. We were considered one of the stronger teams in the tournament and, as good as the Hakamo-os are, I don’t think many people expected us to go 1-7 out of the gates.
As bad as our week was, I don’t think it was a hopeless showing. We had some bad luck in Week 1 whether by coin flips, hax, and/or unfavorable matchups:
•AstilCodex’s Ludicolo team performed well in testing, but Feliburn’s Unfezant/Birdvally combo was a really bad draw. On top of that, Scarf Kabutops negated Rapidash.
•neomon’s team had a bad matchup against Toxic Spikes and Girafarig, and Strap brought both. You hate to see it.
•TheFranklin was inadequately prepped for Darkvally and that was a huge oversight by me considering Louna’s relationship with Tuthur and Tuthur’s known affinity for Darkvally. That’s 100% on me because I built the team TheFranklin used and should have incorporated better Darkvally outs in case we got on the backfoot. I thought this comp could be proactive and take the initiative vs. Darkvally and chip it into range for Gourgeist, but it obviously didn’t work out. We weren’t expecting opposing itemless Gourgeist, though, and that exacerbated a bad matchup, as our own Gourgeist was our primary win condition. I take responsibility for this one.
•BloodAce was a little weak to haz stack in the BW slot, but still might have won were it not for some bad rolls and Rock Slide misses. BloodAce played this well and got into a winning position, despite a bad matchup, and just got unlucky. Aside from TheFranklin’s loss, this one hurt the most because of how much work BloodAce put in throughout the week. I feel really confident in him moving forward.
•czim’s SubNP Rotom lost the Toxic vs. Knock Off prediction game vs. Tuthur’s Audino. This was a really close game, we just lost the 50/50.
•Toto was in a winning position with Jumpluff and, while he arguably forced a risky interaction with Munchlax, Alkione killed Jumpluff with a high damage roll out of a favorable RestTalk turn. This one was tough.
