I'll start

Lapras

Item : Any
Ability : Any

- Rain Dance
- Ice Beam / Blizzard
- Hydro Pump / Surf
- Thunder

Reason : Lapras doesn't have the best movepool, so a simple set like this is best. Lapras gets all moves but Thunder via level up, but Hydro Pump and Ice Beam come late so you might want to use the other move which comes way earlier : Blizzard is available at the same place as Thunder (the Goldenrod Department Store) and surf is a hm.

I wouldn't bother with Rain Dance even ingame to be honest. With Lapras's 60 base speed, Avalanche and Ice Shard would be good secondary STABs, I think.

Parasect can actually be used two different ways in-game efficiently.

Parasect @ Leftovers
Ability: Dry Skin (Effect Spore will sometimes screw this up)
~Spore
~False Swipe
~Giga Drain/Synthesis
~X-Scissor

After you beat the game, Parasect is one of the best catcher Pokémon. False Swipe to 1 HP, Spore them, and start chucking balls. Giga Drain helps to keep Parasect's health up, but Synthesis is a much better option but you have to Tutor it. X-Scissor helps to take out chunks of health when you need to.

Parasect @ Miracle Seed/Power Band
Ability: Any
~X-Scissor
~Spore
~Slash/Dig
~Giga Drain

Parasect also has abusable coverage against Rock, Ground, Water, Psychic, Dark, and Grass types with it's STABs. Definitely one to use in-game, and Dig is a pretty good move for more coverage against Steel and Electric types.

Furret @ Anything
Ability: Run Away
Field Moves: Cut, Surf, Strength, Whirlpool, Rock Smash, Headbutt, Dig

Furret is the ultimate HM slave in HGSS without trading (Pelipper and Tropius are just as good). Simply mix and match HMs and TMs you need/want, and go at it. Run Away is helpful because if you get into a tight situation where you need to be able to flee, switch to Furret, take a hit, and Run Away.

Gengar
Item: Any
Ability: Like we have a choice

-Shadow Ball
-Sludge Bomb
-Hypnosis
-Destiny Bond/Focus Blast

As soon as you get Shadow Ball, teach it to your Gastly and it'll just one shot practically anything that doesn't resist it. You'll get Sludge Bomb from the guard in the gate to the Lake of Rage after you clear out the Rocket hideout, and will be your strongest attack from then on. Gastly knows Hypnosis at the start and it maintains its usefulness throughout the game, despite its imperfect accuracy. Destiny Bond is the preferred option for the last slot, allowing you to get another kill when low on health, and since Gengar will be outspeeding most of the things you'll run into, you're sure to go first and take something down with you. Focus Blast is also a viable option, but Gengar is not going to want to be staying in on most of the things it wants to use Focus Blast on, Rock and Dark types in particular, since they can get a heavy hit off or OHKO it if you miss. You're better off letting the rest of your team take care of that. Heracross makes a good partner, and it can switch in on Dark moves Gengar doesn't like. Double Psychic weakness sucks though.

Overall, Gengar's combination of high power, speed, immunities, and sleep support make it one of the most reliable and useful pokes in-game. It comes early too, and while it's hard to raise (Night Shade will be it's only means of attacking), once you get the Shadow Ball TM, it'll pull its own weight soon enough. Although you do need a trade to fully evolve it, Haunter's not bad, but it will really struggle later in the game unless you evolve it.

Typhlosion
Item: Choice Specs
Ability: Blaze

- Eruption
- Focus Blast
- Swift
- Flamethrower

This wrecks stuff, plain and simple. Eruption is your main move and at full HP massively destructive, and with Typhlosion's speed you'll be sweeping stuff and thus staying at full HP. Focus Blast is for rock types, shame about the accuracy but what can you do. For dragons, waters, and other fire types bear in mind a resisted STAB full-HP Eruption is only slightly less powerful and much more accurate than a neutral Focus Blast. Swift is for Double Teamers; you will encounter them and it's great to be able to take them out reliably. Flamethrower is largely filler but is there for if you do get to low HP or run out of Eruption PP.

If you have another team member with Sunny Day Typhlosion becomes even more godly. Then, replace Flamethrower with SolarBeam to be able to deal with waters and completely smash rock/grounds.

Furret !

Item : If it boosts special attack, it’s good, but Battle frontier Battlers will like status orbs or Life Orb.

Ability : Run Away makes Furret even better.

- Return / Façade / Secret Power / Strength
- Shadow Claw / Shadow Ball / Dig / Sucker Punch / Focus Punch / Brick Break / Aqua Tail / Fire Punch
- Thunderbolt / Thunder / Ice Beam / Blizzard / Flamethrower / Hyper Beam / Ice Punch / Thunder Punch
- Rain Dance / Sunny Day / Surf / U-Turn / Substitute / Giga Impact / Grass Knot / Captivate / Attract / Endure / Charge Beam / Focus Blast / Thief / Shock Wave / Double Team / Protect / Baton Pass / Amnesia /Iron Tail / Toxic / SolarBeam / Hyper Voice / Rest / Follow Me / Helping Hand / Me first / Foresight / Defence Curl / Mud Slap / Super Fang

Why : First off, You can only get Aqua Tail / Fire Punch / Ice Punch / ThunderPunch / Mud Slap / Super Fang as moves from the Tutors at the Battle Frontier. Anyway, the first move will actually be very rarely used, because it is very rare that you will not have a super-effective move on the target. The second move will be used to cover the only thing that resist or are immune to normal, but I would like to point out the only reason you should use a fighting move over Dig is because you want to smash stuff with raw power. Slot 3 is for teching Furret against specific threats, like Lance’s dragons or his Gyarados. Slot 4 is for just going wild with Furret’s stupidly large movepool, Mud Slap, while weak, always lowers accuracy so it can be very helpful if you’re using it because Furret is not the best at taking hits. Giga Impact and Hyper Beam are just for going out with a bang, but moreso for Giga Impact because of his higher Attack.

Golbat

Item : Leftovers (If available)

Ability : Any

-Air Slash
-Mean Look
-Confuse Ray / Toxic
-Giga Drain / Protect / Roost / Sludge Bomb
First thing first : it is just unbelievable how much Hax this beast can cause if you use Protect and Toxic, I honestly once used Roost over Giga Drain for the E4 so I can't really say much other then Giga Drain ripping Chock and his Poliwrath apart, while even Wing Attack can hurt his Primeape badly.

Is anyone honestly finding these helpful or is this just a thread where you can show off how good you are at beating the game? Not to be overly cynic but I'm having trouble seeing the point...

They might be more helpful if they referred to Nuzlocke/Wedlocke/Scramblocke playthroughs, where one does not simply spam Flame wheel until Quilava faints, only to bring in the next mon... That's what I think.

It's meant to be used with the in-game tier lists to get pokemon that won't have trouble against the Elite 4, and this one is also used for Kanto. It was originally CJorex's idea.

Dude, how many people casually playing the game will have Choice Specs ?

Believe it or not, Choice Specs is very much available to the casual player in HGSS; You can obtain it in the Lake of Rage during High Tide (i.e. not on a Wednesday), on a small section of land in the north side of the lake (Surf required). But yeah, the bottom line is that the Typhlosion set mentioned is pretty legit, given how accessible Choice Specs is in HGSS.

.........Fail, I thought that was Choice Band.

Lanturn
Ability : Any
Item : Any

-Aqua Ring
-Hydro Pump
-Thunder
-Rain dance

Basically you just set-up rain and go to town. Hydro Pump is a bomb in rain, Thunder never misses in rain, Rain Dance sets rain up so hydro pump and thunder get the boosts, and Aqua Ring is for healing.
