Being weak to Bullet Punch isn't a death sentence, especially since the type isn't weak to Stealth Rock. Fairy resists the two most offensively powerful types in the game, is only weak to 2 very uncommon types otherwise (seriously, covering the steel weakness is NOT a problem), and has superb neutral coverage otherwise. It won't be broken, but it's shaping up to be a damn good type for sure, possibly around the Water or Fire-type level.

Now all that's left is to see what types were reclassified! I'm thinking I'll probably go ahead and start weaning myself off of spoilers since I want to explore the region on my own this gen. It'll be the first time going into it blind since Gen 3, my favorite generation.

haha it's just my current decision at the moment. I am hoping Chespin's line can pull through for me because I've always been a "grass first" player in the handheld games.

Numerous things can impact my decision, such as Chespin's 3rd evo being a badass, Grass/rock porcupine that learns shell smash soon enough to be relevant in game. This next month will tell though. On that note, I also hope for blastoice to finally get shell smash, 2 on one team would be overkill in-game.

But right now, Chespin is a grass pikachu and the middle evo is a chespin in an ugly green costume. Also, it's shaped like a football.

As for fire-type, I'm just giving a big N-O, unless it's a unique Fire/Psychic sweeper. The only fire-type I really appreciated was Infernape.

I wasn't implying that they were, I was implying that Fairy would be somewhere around that level in terms of fire's offense and water's defensive capabilities.

And actually, fire has the second greatest amount of resistances after steel, I believe. Along with 4 advantages, that's a pretty sweet deal. Its only drawbacks are that the types it is weak to are rather common.
 
Can someone explain to me why gamefreak does NOTHING to help grass types offensively? Chespin evo looks terrible. Fennekin evo looks like generic fan art. Froakie has been the only one appealing to me from the beginning and now his evo just confirms that. I like the steel nerf.

What does the evolution looking terrible have to do with Gamefreak helping Grass types offensively?
 
Pretty sure Grass-types were always meant to lean defensively. They resist types that few others do, and learn a host of supportive and disruptive moves. I'm just thankful Grass didn't acquire another weakness to Fairy, what with the whole "fairies control nature at will" thing.

I've always seen the Grass-type as a mixture of highs and lows. The trade off for hitting traditionally very important types like Water and Ground is somewhat compensated for hitting more traditionally unimportant types like Bug, Poison, and Flying for NVE damage. That's note even mentioning that Grass types have an arsenal of status enduing attacks to help them out.

Edit: I don't know about you guys, but I traditionally pick the same type of starter (Grass) for each initial play through of a game. I'm sticking with Chespin even if it's revealed to be some ungodly ugly shit factory.

Fire/Dark seems unlikely. It learns way too many Psychic-type moves and normally Dark-types have a menacing or mischievous character to their artwork.
 
Fennekin2's stick is not a broom btw, at least not currently.

It's a dowsing rod, the old legend of using a two-pronged twig to find water in the desert.

It still could. But currently I believe the inspiration is something like a desert wanderer.
Makes a lot of sense since Fennekin is based off a desert fox.
Perhaps that's also where the 'psychic' element could come in. Using a dowsing rod takes a certain amount of intuition (because it's fake)

Maybe it'll be a...sand witch. -v-
