Yeah true, going Tenta over and over again isn't immediately threatening enough to outweigh dealing with Spikes, so Donphan being a Cloy magnet probably isn't the best idea. Although fwiw, Tenta is actually one of the better things at getting itself sweep-ready, what with SB poison forcing ST Electrics to Rest. Regardless, a spinner of some sort is necessary so that when you are ready to sweep, Cloy is willing to come in to give you free setup. That or a Marowak to actually get Cloy to be used defensively.

there's also the issue of the whole spikes-spin relationship. you spin as a response to spiking, you don't spikes as a response to spinning. just because you run a spinner, there's nothing there forcing him to go to his spiker. in fact, if your spinner's any good (e.g. starmie vs cloyster), it deters them from using cloyster unless he's more or less willing to trade with your starmie.

RBY Lapras into [insert Ice and no coverage thing]. Articuno, Ice Beam Tanklax, mono-Ice Chansey, whatever. It's one of the hardest things to switch into in the game, being a bulky Water that can hurt other Waters and (to some extent) Chansey, making it a great way to punish mono-Ice users.

Don't try this on Cloyster: a) they can just Clamp and switch out for free, negating Lapras' threat (Cloyster's ability to do this is why it is such a massive pain to fight in general), b) Cloyster actually has a decent chance to Clamp Lapras to death if it carries Hyper Beam.
