The Next Best Thing... [V2]: Set Discussion

I hate to be this guy but...does everyone test their sets at least a few times before posting? Close Combat and Machamp don't go together very well at all, especially on sets attempting to last a while. Machamp is very slow and has only decent bulk at best, meaning that using CC and dropping Machamp's defenses is often a death sentence unless it immediately switches out. It works well enough with Choice Band because of the hit-and-run nature, but on AV, Bulk Up, and RestTalk sets, CC is counterproductive to Machamp's longevity. Heracross has significantly more speed, 85 to 'Champ's 55, so it can pull off CC sets much better, whereas Machamp is just too slow and usually has to take a hit before it moves. *end rant*

Anyway, I can vouch for the viability of Sub + 3 Attacks Machamp after some testing, and I really like the Natural Gift option, so my vote goes to...

Azelf @ Choice Specs
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Future Sight
- Dazzling Gleam
- Fire Blast
- Psyshock

Basically you click future sight and watch something die two turns later. Dazzling gleam for dark, fire blast for steel types, psyshock is a more reliable secondary STAB pretty simple

Physical Azelf, for a speedy attacker that isn't totally outclassed by Alakazam. Fire Blast is ideal for bulky steels like Mega-Aggron, but Fire Punch works in a pinch if you don't want to sacrifice your special defense. (In that case, go Jolly and move the 4 SpA EVs to SpD to avoid a Download boost from PZ.)

In particular, this thing does well with a very speedy U-turn off of 349 Attack, allowing it to deal serious damage and sometimes even OHKO a lot of fast offensive threats. It also tends to lure in special walls who almost always expect a special attacker set. I'll post calcs and replays later, along with a more thorough description. Some notable figures in the meantime, though:

  • ~65-75% to Hydreigon with U-turn
  • Knock Off + U-turn OHKOs 252/0 Jirachi
  • Fire Blast is a guaranteed OHKO on Lucario (Fire Punch always OHKOs after SR, too)
  • OHKOs Mega-Absol with U-turn
  • Zen Headbutt OHKOs Darm after rocks
  • Fire Blast easily 2HKOs 252/120 Mega-Aggron despite the lack of investment

Azelf @ Focus Sash
Ability: Levitate
EVs: *4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Hasty / Naive Nature
- Taunt
- Flamethrower/Fireblast
- Grass Knot
- Explosion/Knock off
*evs can be tweaked depending on your wall-breaking requirements for your team

In general, this is a set that most people just don't prepare for. Upon seeing the sash + taunt, most users assume the traditional anti-lead Knock off/SR/Taunt set.

This set is designed to stop most setups (from CM to SD to most restalk) by acting as a suicide wall-breaker. You're almost guaranteed to get rid of something with explosion, while knock off provides that little edge when facing unfavourable types. What makes this useable is the surprise factor on mons like Swampert and Jirachi, which the former is ohko'ed by Grassknot. Snorlax / Suicune will find it hard to setup, if at all after a grassknot+Explosion. Even the classic wish users hate the taunt/explosion combo. Hence, feel free to tweak the evs, for more explosion power at the risk of missing some OHKOs w/ grassknot. The choice between fireblast/flamethrower is the age old discussion of power vs accuracy, so make your choice as your team needs.

Azelf @ Leftovers
Ability: Levitate
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
- Calm Mind

- Fire Blast

The premise of this set is to sub on things that would normally for you out such as porygon-2 and somewhat blissey, and use them as setup fodder. There is really not much to say here. Basically this is not a shitter nasty plot because of the obvious +1 SpD boost while it doesn't have the immediate power of NP it can sweep through teams easier.

Sorry if I am bad I don't play that much uu.

Meet Jirachi's more offensive ParaFlinch cousin that likes to paralyze and run a little more often. STAB Zen Headbutt really stings coming off of 125 base Attack and pairs nicely with Thunder Wave, letting it break thru some threats it usually couldn't beat, with some luck. Speaking of T-Wave, it's what makes this set annoying and unique, crippling checks and faster threats, like Houndoom-M, Hydreigon, and Aerodactyl-M, as well as easing prediction. Alakazam and Starmie can not switch in because LO Knock Off KO's both of them, along with most other Psychic-types not named Slowbro, which are outsped and cleanly 2HKO'ed. The item removal from Knock Off is also extremely valuable and bolsters Azelf's utility. Fire Blast takes care of Aggron-M, Forretress, and other random Steel-types that don't care about paralysis and would wall this set. However, another special attack, like Energy Ball, Thunderbolt, or even Dazzling Gleam could be run depending on Azelf's teammates.

Choice Specs Future Sight/Doom Desire hits like a truck but generates more free turns than Magikarp.

Physical Azelf is so cool and underrated.
