[AAA] Kyurem [QC 3/3] [GP 2/2]

QC: Kl4ng, -Grim, Lcass4919
GP: P Squared, The Dutch Plumberjack

[OVERVIEW]

Kyurem is one of the best wallbreakers in Almost Any Ability: nothing can reliably switch in on it due to its great power and movepool. It has excellent mixed attacking stats, although its movepool favors special attacking. Kyurem is far from frail as well: 125 / 95 / 95 bulk is fantastic for an offensive Pokemon. Ice is also a great offensive typing, hitting many Pokemon super effectively. However, it is poor defensively, giving Kyurem weaknesses to common Fighting moves as well as a weakness to Stealth Rock. In fact, Kyurem hates all entry hazards, so Rapid Spin or Defog support is mandatory. Average-to-low Speed hampers Kyurem against offensive teams, and it faces stiff competition from Latios and Latias as an offensive Dragon-type, as they both are much faster and have better defensive typing. However, Kyurem has STAB Ice Beam and an easier time against Steel-types due to Earth Power and Focus Blast to set itself apart from the Eon twins.

[SET]

move 1: Draco Meteor
move 2: Ice Beam

ability: Tinted Lens / Adaptability
nature: Modest / Timid
evs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Moves
========

Draco Meteor is the strongest STAB move on this set, 2HKOing everything that doesn't resist it or isn't Chansey. Ice Beam is the reliable STAB move for when you don't want Draco Meteor's stat penalties. It also hits the Fairy-types immune to Draco Meteor. Earth Power hits the Steel-types that resist Kyurem's STAB combination for super effective damage. Focus Blast also hits said Steel types, getting stronger hits on the likes of Levitate Heatran and Ferrothorn.

Set Details
========

The EVs simply maximize Speed and power. The final 4 EVs can be placed in either defense stat to give Download users an undesired boost. A Modest nature is preferred for maximum power, although Timid can be used to outrun Jolly Lucario. Choice Specs amplifies Kyurem's already huge Special Attack. Tinted Lens powers up resisted hits, giving Kyurem perfect neutral coverage with just its STAB attacks, as nothing 4x resists both of them. On the other hand, Adaptability can be used to make Kyurem's STAB moves much more powerful.

Usage Tips
========

This set is fairly straightforward to use: switch Kyurem into weaker Water-, Grass-, or Electric-types and fire off powerful attacks. This set is best used early- to mid-game to remove walls for teammates to sweep. Generally, spamming Draco Meteor will get the job done, especially if you're running Tinted Lens. However, if the opponent still has a Fairy-type or a special wall like Chansey on their team, they will likely anticipate this and switch, so you should use Ice Beam in those circumstances. If you're running Adaptability, you will have to predict more carefully; in particular, be wary of the likes of Heatran and Doublade. Avoid switching Kyurem in if entry hazards are up on your side, as Kyurem can soon find itself at low HP.

Team Options
========

Because Kyurem is susceptible to all entry hazards and this set switches in and out a lot, Defog or Rapid Spin support is critical. Excadrill and Starmie can clear the field of hazards, and Kyurem can switch in on the Water-type moves Excadrill draws and the Grass- and Electric-type moves Starmie draws. Swords Dance Skarmory appreciates the holes this set can create, as Kyurem can easily take out most of the Electric-types that wall Skarmory. It can also remove the hazards Kyurem is weak to. Curse Snorlax and Nasty Plot Thundurus also appreciate this set's ability to break through Unaware walls like Cresselia and Suicune. Entry hazard setters like Deoxys-S and Ferrothorn are good teammates as well, as they make switching into Kyurem even harder.

[SET]
name: Mixed Refrigerate
move 1: Draco Meteor
move 2: Return
move 3: Earth Power / Focus Blast
move 4: Roost / Focus Blast
item: Life Orb
ability: Refrigerate
nature: Mild / Hasty
evs: 40 Atk / 252 SpA / 216 Spe
ivs: 29 HP

Moves
========

Draco Meteor hits everything that doesn't resist it very hard. Return has an effective 198 Base Power factoring in Refrigerate and STAB, being able to 2HKO Chansey and Poison Heal Snorlax most of the time. Earth Power gets excellent coverage with Kyurem's STAB combination, 2HKOing Doublade and OHKOing Heatran that lack Levitate. Focus Blast can be used for some extra coverage, such as on Ferrothorn and Levitate Heatran. It has fewer PP and much lower accuracy than Earth Power, but it hits much harder and enables Kyurem to defeat Levitate Heatran, which would otherwise wall this set. Roost heals off Life Orb recoil and other passive damage.

Set Details
========

Special Attack is maximized, as most of this set's moves are special. A Mild nature increases Kyurem's Special Attack further and is chosen over Rash because lowering Kyurem's Special Defense weakens its ability to check bulky Grass- and Water-types. Running 216 Speed EVs lets Kyurem outrun maximum Speed Adamant Lucario. The rest of the EVs are placed in Attack to power up Return. 29 HP IVs give Kyurem a Life Orb number, thus reducing the recoil Kyurem takes with each attack. A Life Orb is the best item to use, as it provides the most power. Refrigerate is the chosen ability to give Kyurem a strong physical STAB move in Return, which can 2HKO many of the special walls Kyurem lures in.

Usage Tips
========

This set is best used early- to mid-game to punch holes in the opponent's team. You should generally open with Return; it will cause most special walls to make a hasty retreat, and if your opponent switches in a physical wall, you can then hit them hard with Draco Meteor. If running Roost, you could pivot Kyurem into opposing Electric-types, but this is a risky strategy, as they could just Volt Switch out. It's even more dangerous if entry hazards are up.

Team Options
========

This set is a wallbreaker, so fast cleaners like Nasty Plot Thundurus, Volcarona, and special Genesect are good teammates. Entry hazard control is critical for this set, especially if you decide to forgo Roost. Excadrill and Starmie are good teammates for providing Rapid Spin, with Excadrill able to set up Stealth Rock as well. Kyurem can also switch in on the Water-type moves Excadrill draws and the Grass- and Electric-type moves Starmie draws. If you forgo Roost, Wish support is recommended. Vaporeon can pass Kyurem good-sized Wishes to keep it healthy, and Kyurem can switch in on the Grass- and Electric-type moves Vaporeon draws in. Hazard stackers like Deoxys-S and Ferrothorn can also be used to make this set even harder to switch into.

[OTHER OPTIONS]
========

A set using Substitute, Roost, Ice Beam, and Earth Power with a Life Orb and Sheer Force could be used if you need a bulky attacker. A set utilizing Unburden, a White Herb, and Draco Meteor could make Kyurem a good late-game cleaner. A Choice Scarf set is viable, but it wastes Kyurem's amazing power and would force it to switch in and out a lot, a liability for a Pokemon susceptible to all entry hazards. Hyper Voice could be used on the Refrigerate set for a reliable special STAB move, but it doesn't really accomplish anything the combination of Draco Meteor and Return couldn't. Hidden Power Fire hits Scizor harder than any other move but doesn't accomplish much else. A mixed Sheer Force set using Ice Beam, Earth Power, Focus Blast, and Iron Head is possible, although its only real advantage is not taking recoil from Life Orb. That set could also run Download. No Guard could be used for perfectly accurate Blizzards and Focus Blasts, but a Sheer Force-boosted Ice Beam is more powerful than Blizzard and has more PP. A Choice Band set utilizing Refrigerate is possible, but Kyurem's physical movepool is extremely barren. A physical Tinted Lens set faces similar problems.

[CHECKS AND COUNTERS]
========

**Steel-types**: Steel-types resist both of Kyurem's STAB moves and can hit back hard with their own super effective STAB attacks. Levitate Doublade beats the Refrigerate set; Levitate Heatran walls sets that lack Focus Blast. Genesect outruns Kyurem and OHKOes it with a Sheer Force- or Tough Claws-boosted Iron Head. Mega Metagross outruns Kyurem and OHKOes it with a Tough Claws-boosted Meteor Mash, but it still takes heavy damage from Earth Power. However, Choice Specs Kyurem can at worst 2HKO all of them with Draco Meteor if it's running Tinted Lens.

**Special Walls**: Chansey walls the special sets but is 2HKOed by a Refrigerate-boosted Return. Porygon2 walls the Choice Specs set if it's running Tinted Lens and the Refrigerate set if it lacks Focus Blast, but it can be 2HKOed by an Adaptability-boosted Ice Beam after Stealth Rock. Specially defensive Cresselia can take anything apart from an Adaptability-boosted Draco Meteor.

**Faster Pokemon**: Faster Pokemon that can hit Kyurem super effectively like Genesect, Mega Medicham, Mega Metagross, Mega Lopunny, and Mega Gardevoir can reliably revenge kill Kyurem, although none of them can safely switch in.

**Pixilate Users**: Pokemon that use the combination of Pixilate and Extreme Speed like Entei, Arcanine, Dragonite, and Zygarde can revenge kill Kyurem after it's taken some prior damage, but none can safely switch in.

I'm not part of the official AAA QC team, but I'll do an unofficial check.

Overview
  • It's not relevant to say that it has greater bulk than Bronzong. Mention that it has incredible bulk for an offensive Pokemon.
  • You shouldn't mention Keldeo and Terrakion in the analysis. That they have been banned may be good for Kyurem, but it's not something that is relevant for the role of Kyurem in the metagame.
  • Mention its bad defensive typing, but that it has a good Ice-STAB.
  • [Possible] Rephrase the first sentence so that it says that its a great wallbreaker, which no Pokemon can always switch in on.
Set 1
  • [UT -> TO] Move the need for hazard support to Team Options and list some hazard removers with good synergy there.
  • [Moves] Mention that Ice Beam hits Fairy-types that are immune to Draco Meteor.
  • [UT] Say that Kyurem can (ironically) become setup bait if you are locked into Draco Meteor, so that players have to watch out for that.
  • [UT] You'll usually want to use Draco Meteor, since its the best move to nuke things.
  • [UT] Say that the final 4 EVs can be adjusted to prevent certain Download users from getting the boost they want.
  • [UT] I wouldn't mention that it enjoys getting brought in safely. All Pokemon do, but usually Kyurem isn't a premier Pokemon to bring in, rather sweepers and other frail Pokemon which can't switch in otherwise. Kyurem actually does a fairly decent job at switching in on Water-, Grass- and Electric-types.
  • [TO] In my opinion, Flash Fire Skarmory can stop your momentum, so on teams with Kyurem (balance / offense) you'd rather use Gale Wings. Kyurem isn't even that weak to Fire anyway and it lures and breaks the Steel-types Skarmory struggles with. This is immediately a set-up sweeper for your next point as well, and it can remove the Stealth Rock Kyurem is weak to.
  • [TO] Mention why Curse Snorlax and Nasty Plot Thundurus have good synergy with Kyurem besides it breaking walls. What kind of Pokemon do they struggle with and why can Kyurem switch in on them and beat them, or why can it lure them and defeat them.

Set 2
  • [Possible] I'd personally have made this the third, but it's fine if you think it's better than Refrigerate.
  • [SD] Briefly mention the nature when you're talking about the EVs.
  • [UT -> TO] Same thing as last time.
  • [UT] Mention to avoid status, as Kyurem can't handle any of the main status conditions.
  • [UT] Mention its unique role on a balanced team as an offensive Pokemon that can deter defensive Pokemon from being able to set up on most of them.
  • [TO] It supports fast cleaners well. Most have troubles with walls, so a Pokemon on the team which can make them a detriment is great for them.
  • [TO] Steel-types threaten this set, even with Earth Power or Focus Blast, as many aren't weak to either or both. (Levitate Doublade is even immune to both), so it appreciates having something to switch in on Steel-types on its team.
  • [TO] Mention Toxic Spikes as a support option. The combination of Substitute and Roost allows Kyurem to stall out many Pokemon once it gets a Substitute up, so that it can eventually pick them off with Ice Beam or Earth Power.
Set 3
  • [Moves] Mention that Hyper Voice is its best option versus some Pokemon like Skarmory, because of their high physical defense.
  • [SD] Mention why it has 29 HP IVs. Many new players will be confused because of it.
  • [UT] Mention that Kyurem is easily worn down with Life Orb recoil specifically when you mention hazard support.
  • [UT] Mention that Kyurem should try to find a switch-in opportunity against offense and kill something there.
  • [UT] Mention that you should usually spam Return, if something specially weak switches in, you can nuke it with a special attack.
  • [UT] Don't switch in on Scald.
  • [TO] I wouldn't mention Latios. It doesn't have too good synergy, neither type-wise nor role-wise. They are both usually used as wallbreakers, and while Latios can clean, it doesn't do that the best on Defog sets. If you want to mention Defog, something like Scizor has good synergy and can become decently threatening with Swords Dance. Be aware that it has a big 4MSS this way though.
  • [TO] (this applies to all) Maybe refer to some Pokemon which appreciate the ability of something to switch in on Electric, Grass and Water types.
OO
  • Instead of Roost + 3 Attacks with Sheer Force, you could mention AoA Sheer Force, as you have similar sets to Roost + 3 Attacks. Flash Cannon can be run on it to hit Fairy types.
  • A (defensive) set with Poison Heal could be mentioned, as Kyurem appreciates the passive recovery and status immunity, while still being fairly strong. It also makes it hard to wear down, especially for Water types. +6 4 SpA Suicune Scald vs. 0 HP / 0 SpD Kyurem: 173-204 (44.2 - 52.1%) -- 14.8% chance to 2HKO <- lol It could also run moves like Dragon Tail.
  • A banded refrigerate set could be mentioned.
C&C
  • Azumarill isn't really common in AAA. It doesn't seem worth mentioning individually as a check.
  • Neither is Mega Gallade
  • Mention Genesect as a check. It isn't hit SE by any move, and can hit back with a super effective Iron Head.

I would like to see a bit more detail in general, but it was hard to list what exactly at times. Also my first "QC" check ever, so may have missed some stuff. Was surprised at some stuff that I couldn't say more about it, but that will come!

May say more things for that reason if I think of it.

Soz this took so long. School and whatnot.

Overview

  • This looks good, can't find anything.
Choice Specs
  • Slash Timid, as while it's usually not needed it has its uses (Outspeeding Krookodile, Genesect, and Jolly Luke are some examples).
  • (Optional) Mention that 2 Draco Meteors are stronger than 2 Ice Beams in Usage Tips, meaning it is generally better to use Draco Meteor.
  • Mention entry hazard setters such as Deo-S and Ferrothorn is Team Options to make Kyurem harder to switch into.
Mixed Refrigerate
  • Since Focus Blast generally accomplishes the same goals as Earth Power (nuking steels) slash them both in slot 2 with Earth Power first (Keep Focus Blast in slot 4 as well though). In the moves section explain the upsides of both (EP hits non-levitate doublade and is more reliable, Focus hits Levitran)
  • I don't think Hyper Voice is necessary, as Return already hits Skarmory very hard and it generally won't switch into Kyurem regardless.
  • For the same reasons as Timid in the Specs set slash Hasty here.
  • "It is chosen over a Rash nature because Kyurem tends to draw in more physical moves than special ones" I think you meant the opposite here?
  • Mention entry hazard setters such as Deo-S and Ferrothorn is Team Options to make Kyurem harder to switch into.
SubRoost
  • I think this set should be removed. The main reason SubRoost is usable in standard is because of Pressure, and without it SubRoost isn't nearly as efficient. Kyurem is simply better off firing off strong attacks and wallbreaking than it is using Substitute. I'll wait for -Grim 's opinion on this though.
OO / Checks and Counters
  • Looks good, though I'd remove the SF + Specs line since SF is a lot better with LO.

Yeah I don't see the appeal of SubRoost in AAA, move to OO imo.

Small thing but you lack the '[OVERVIEW]' at the top, take a look at other analysis if you're confused. In fact there are a few unnecessary spaces through the analysis as well so I'd check the whole format.

Overview: Mention that its bulk + typing does allow it to check Electric- and Water-types such as Raikou and Manaphy. Elaborate a bit on its low Speed, like how that low Speed actually affects its performance in the metagame, especially against offense. Mention that it faces stiff competition from Latios and Latias as Dragon-type wallbreakers because they have higher Speed and better typing, and say what Kyurem has over them (pretty much Ice STAB and a few coverage moves such as Focus Blast and Earth Power that they do not learn).

[SET]
name: Choice Specs
SD: No need to mention its exact stat, just say that Choice Specs dramatically increase Kyurem's Special Attack helping it break walls.

UT: It's not just Fairies that you should avoid with Draco Meteor, it's also bulky special walls such as Chansey. Mention that this works best early- or mid-game to soften up or beat up walls that would annoy teammates. Mention that if entry hazards are up on your side, switching Kyurem into anything can go wrong very fast.
[SET]
name: Mixed Refrigerate

UT: Mention that this set can lure in special walls with Return so teammates can sweep. Mention that it works best early- or mid-game to soften or beat those walls. Mention that if entry hazards are up on your side, switching Kyurem into anything can go wrong very fast. Mention that if using Roost you can take advantage of Kyurem's typing to pivot into Electric-, Grass-, and Water-types, though not advised (especially not with hazards up).

TO: I think you need to list more special cleaners as opposed to physical ones because this set mainly lures in special walls.

OO: Mention that Scarf sets also have to switch in and out a lot which is very annoying with Kyurem's weakness to entry hazards. Remove defensive Poison Heal, it's outclassed by other Dragons that are less limited by their typing. Mention the pro's and cons of mixed Sheer Force. Give a biggish mention to White Herb + Unburden (specially based with Draco Meteor of course), it's a pretty decent cleaner.

C&C: I don't think you need to give Doublade such a big mention considering it takes a ton from both Draco Meteor and Ice Beam. Rename revenge killers to Faster Pokemon for consistency and because they dont always have to revenge kill.

alright.

Choice Specs
  • in usage tips, replace "dont send in kyurem with hazards up" with "be cautious of sending kyurem in with hazards up"
  • in Team Options, mention adapt/tinted latios, as although adds on a weakness to certain threats, both appriciate eachothers utility on taking on eachothers threats, such as chansey and other special walls for kyurem, and ferrothorn and other steel types for latios.
Refridgerate Mixed
  • replace "2hkos chansey and snorlax" with "almost guarentees a 2hko chansey and snorlax". while chans has a almost guarenteed death, still has a 2% chance to survive, while lax has a 12% on its standard set. nitty gritty, but people read these for accuracy, not for "woah strong" factor.
[OTHER OPTIONS]
  • mention physical tinted lens(but fails to ko stuff, and lacks coverage), download(probably viable enough to get its own set tbh but noone uses it), and no guard
[CHECKS AND COUNTERS]
  • pixilate revenge killers can ko kyurem pretty quickly even with its titanic bulk due to its weakness to rocks, making every switchout and switchin a problem.
honestly, i couldnt find much to comment on, so QC 3/3

What Pixilate users are faster than Kyurem and can threaten it? Lucario's the only one I can think of.
lucario, entei/arcanine, dragonite/zygarde if they decide to run it. pretty much anything that runs pixie espeed, since pixilate and refridge are both pretty much interchangable since their coverage options are the same.
252+ Atk Choice Band Pixilate Entei Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 374-440 (95.6 - 112.5%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO
252+ Atk Life Orb Pixilate Zygarde Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 294-348 (75.1 - 89%) -- guaranteed OHKO after Stealth Rock
252+ Atk Pixilate Dragonite Extreme Speed vs. 0 HP / 0 Def Kyurem: 278-328 (71 - 83.8%) -- 68.8% chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock
all three of these can easily revenge kill kyurem with just a tiny bit of prior damage, which isnt hard to get on a poke weak to rocks.
