Steel Qualifiers

This thread is for the qualifiers for the Steel gym. The date for the start of the qualifiers is June 26th, 2016. The format for the qualifiers will be singles. The examiner will be Frosty.

Each candidate for the gym will fight against the examiner, a user chosen by the gym committee. After the battles end, the candidate that the committee judges played best will become the new leader. Note that the committee has the right to choose no candidate, should they find nobody suitable.

Format said:
  • 3v3 Singles
    • Gym candidates may bring up to 3 extra Pokemon.
    • The examiner's Pokemon will be chosen from their pool. The same Pokemon will be brought to each match in the qualifiers.
  • The examiner will send out first.
  • 2 recoveries / 5 Chills per Pokemon
  • Items = On
  • Abilities = All
  • Switch = OK
  • Megas = 1
  • Subs = 3
  • ASB Arena
  • Soft DQ: 3 Days
Signups will be ongoing until the start of the qualifiers.

I feel like I'm being called...

No I won't join since Frosty would probably murder me and I'm not really ready to come back and play well while not johning on everyone. Good luck everyone, I'm expecting a good successor :)

No need here for a longer justification, since there is only one candidate. So let's cut to the chase

smashlloyd20

  • The plays you gave were vanilla. Standard. They have no flaws by themselves, but they are somewhat predictable. Metagross being used to counter infernape, your actions etc. Predictable isn't bad per se, sometimes it is done for a reason, but I'd advise some more risk-taking if you want to raise the bar. Although good orders bring the bar to already a decent level, mind you.
  • There was no problems with matchups and Stealth Rock was a very good thing to put on subs (see other qualifier). Heck, I'd argue the matchups went your way and in most situations the result would probably be different, if it weren't for the Mud Sport, Binding Band and your inability to fight back against those curve balls.
  • Magnezone x Blastoise was the perfect example of it. You did what was expected: captalize on SE STAB damage race. But using Expert Belt made Magnezone vulnerable to Earthquake, whereas other options (like Charged Stone) wouldn't. And you didnt even consider mud sport. The least you would expect of a serious battler is to check the movepool of their foes.
  • The Bronzong vs Volkraken matchup...hmmm...the final result has a lot to do with binding band's dubious balance. But still, a single 15hp sub would block both whirlpool and bind. A single calc here would go leaps and bounds into reducing the damage done. And yet you did the predictable route: just fight back. We all saw the end result. Seriously, sometimes it seems as if you didn't bother. Or maybe my parameters are just irrealistic. But I digress.
  • The final Metagross vs Infernape matchup happened as expected. To be fair on the matchup itself there wasn't much to be done. The problem was what lead to it.
  • Keep in mind, tho, that the orders were good. They weren't "great", but they were good. stable. sustainable. Add to them a good arena, more experience as steel leader, and a fucking charged stone, and you should be able to pose an entertaining challenge to most players. But if you want to get better, which isn't obligatory, than I reiterate: take more risks and consider other possibilities.

That being said, smashlloyd20 is the new Steel Gym Leader. Godspeed. And send your arena to us asap, k?
