Here's my updated sprite, with a shiny version. I straightened out the claw on the top left and the top of the head, and slightly changed some of the outline shading and the eyes so they fit the original art more.
Once again, I think it's perfect -- I really hope you win.
And, just to convey to everyone else WHY I think DarthVader317 hit the nail on the head, allow me to explain. Beyond just the well balanced placement of the arms and body and its ability to convey speed, frailty, and aggression, the sprite captures several elements common to actual D/P sprites. Compare it to the following sprites (borrowed from Elevator Music's post):
There are some subtle elements of a D/P sprite that Darth has managed to capture.
First, the use and separation of colors. D/P sprites use a sort of thick, saturated, solid, pastel-like color scheme that employ stark contrasts between regions of differing colors. There are definite areas of solid color and a distinct lack of anti-aliasing in many areas. (Poliwrath's sprite is an excellent example of this -- compare the thick, solid shadow color and the lighted portion of his body.)
I think many spriters here are trying to make traditionally good sprites using traditional spriting techniques, but that doesn't necessarily make it a good D/P sprite, if you understand what I mean. You don't need a lot of anti-aliasing, subtle gradations in color, dents or curvatures in the texture, or minute lighting and shadowing -- it's these unnecessary details that work
against the sprite, that, while technically good, make it lack it that subtle "pokemon-esque" feel.
Also, outline-wise, many D/P sprites have gradiated outlines, that shift from black to other colors dominant in the sprite while still retaining a role as an outline (like anti-aliasing, just only within the outline). You can see this in the above sprites, such as the tops of Butterfree's wings, Ninetails's tails, Venemoth's wings, or Alakazam's head. I see Darth added this to his own sprite to great effect, such as the top of the pokemon's head.
Finally, I just think Darth did a fine job choosing the colors. They're just the right shades, as if they were picked straight off another D/P sprite.
So, yeah, go Darth!
