Metagross

contrib_qc.png

QC APPROVED (1/2)

Mention a bulkier spread for CB Metagross [ 252 HP / 56 Atk / 200 SpD ] because the extra bulk is still important for taking Spacial Rends, Dragon Pulse, Draco Meteor and even Thunders from most Ubers. You can still 2HKO max HP Arceus with that spread, 46.2% - 54.7%.

Choice Specs Dialga does 51.1% - 60.2% to the bulkier Metagross spread so it won't 2HKO you. Choice Scarf Fire Blast does 77.5% - 91.8% so Metagross can survive it even after SR. Ghost Arceus Judgment does 36.8% - 43.4% to Metagross so you can actually beat CM Arceus one-on-one.

You also need to stress out more on Metagross's immunity to Toxic, Toxic Spikes which allows it to come in on Lugia for free and beat it in the end, assuming Metagross has enough Attack boosts and is the last pokemon. Metagross also beats Shaymin-S. Metagross can also scare off Chansey easily, Groudon hates Toxic.

Put AgiliGross in AC should be enough because Groudon and Lugia stop you easily. Lugia can just wait till you die from Life Orb recoil. Explosion should still be mentioned because it is Metagross's strongest attack, especially for OHKOing Kyogre.

@trickroom: I'm quite surprised you approved this. I would have thought that Metagross would have been mostly outclassed by Groudon with his higher Attack and Speed (with access to both swords dance and rock polish), but guess not.

Also should Zen Headbutt be mentioned in the AC section since it does allow you to hit Palkia and Kyogre harder.

I don't see why I shouldn't approve Metagross, it is already in the Ubers threat list, didn't lose all of its usefulness even with the introduction of Ferrothorn. That Dragon-type resist is still invaluable and Metagross can revenge a +2 Rayquaza locked into Outrage.

Zen Headbutt doesn't add any extra KOes but against Defensive Poison Arceus. It can still be mentioned in AC since it has the merit of 2HKOing Ho-Oh and max HP Kyogre easily. Metagross's STAB doesn't have anything immune to it, Explosion, Dragon, Poison, Ice type-resist are still useful advantages. An example will be Metagross beating Giratina-O one-on-one in neutral weather. Metagross also beats CM Giratina-O without Shadow Ball easily.

Missing Bronzong with Earthquake and physically defensive Ferrothorn as a Metagross counter.

Thanks guys for the approvals. @Trickroom though I'm assuming you meant OO for Agiligross?

Edit: Also Ferrothorn Physically Defensive or not is never going to enjoy a Banded Hammer Arm and that's the primary option in the 4 slot.

Edit 2: @ the below it's not that it's an awful idea it's just it doesn't do anything special. Metagross needs a boosting item as is and a balloon doesn't let it beat anything extra. It still loses to Groudon.

Sorry, yeah OO for Agiligross.

Ferrothorn can come in on any other move though so put it as a check. Meteor Mash is a contact move so Ferrothorn will greatly annoy Metagross. Balloon isn't a good set, Groudon will just roast you with Fire Blast or Dragon Tail you anyway. Also Metagross might come in on a lot of resisted moves making Balloon not worth using.

Ok I'd just like to say this is completed and ready for GP. I have fixed all prose and grammatical errors to the best of my ability. If anyone notices any nitpicks, grammatical errors, typos or anything of the sort please inform.

Thanks I'll implement your check as you go along. On the set comments though you added a space where you said to remove the space. :/ The one that's there is supposed to be there.

[OVERVIEW]

With an excellent base 135 Attack and bulk to complement it, Metagross can fit right in with the Ubers Pokemon. Ubers is a tier, so it doesn't make much sense to say Metagross fits in with a tier While Metagross lost it's its nuclear powered Explosion,[comma] and faces even more competition with Groudon than ever before, the big iron super computer can still hold its own. Its STAB Meteor Mash is an extremely powerful attack,[comma] especially when boosted by a Choice Band,[comma] and it even has the potential to raise Metagross's its Attack further as an added bonus. Its stellar defensive typing grants it an immunity to Toxic and Toxic Spikes, along with a crucial resist to Dragon- and Ice-type moves, Dragon and Ice allowing it to beat Pokemon such as like Lugia one on one. These qualities also make it an excellent switch in to Choice locked Dragon-type attacks, and Metagross can Pursuit them if they flee for a large amount of damage. Clear Body also makes it a great check to Shaymin-S, taking Seed Flare without risk of a Special Defense drop. Despite these excellent qualities, Steel isn't the greatest offensive type,[comma] and Metagross would have really enjoyed significantly more Speed even with Bullet Punch. Nevertheless, Metagross has bulk beyond that of Skarmory, along with a devastating Attack,[comma] and thus and should always be considered when building a team.

[SET COMMENTS]

With a base 135 Attack and a respectable movepool, it's no wonder why Metagross can abuse a Choice Band to great effect. After the boost provided, Metagross reaches an amazing 607 Attack,[comma] which is admirable even by Uber standards. Backed by it's excellent signature STAB attack: Meteor Mash, Metagross can easily smash holes in the opposing team. For example;,[punctuation] even Bold Lugia is 2HKOed after Stealth Rock, and while Timid variants are 2HKOed regardless. Offensive variants of Groudon will also fall in two hits even without Stealth Rock. Meteor Mash also has the possibility of raising Metagross's Attack stat,[comma] which can turn one on one situations against Giratina (that lack Will-O-Wisp) in to wins. Metagross can even 2HKO specially defensive Bronzong and Skarmory with Meteor Mash if it gets the boost! remove the space

With Metagross's excellent bulk and typing, it can effortlessly switch in to even boosted Outrages and ko KO the dragon using it them. Metagross doesn't mind switching in on Palkia or other Dragon-types locked into a Choiced choice locked on Spacial Rend or Draco Meteor either, and can Pursuit them as they flee for a large amount of damage, clearing the way for teammates who are troubled by them. Beware of good prediction,[comma] however, as most are cautious before locking themselves in to an attack and a correct prediction by the opponent can mean the end of Metagross.

Bullet Punch provides a useful STAB priority attack that can easily clean up a weakened team, and provides some insurance against some ferocious but frail sweepers such as Deoxys-A and Darkrai. Despite this, some may find it's its power lackluster,[comma] as it's not even half as strong as Meteor Mash and can't even 2HKO Mewtwo with Stealth Rock. Therefore, Explosion is a perfectly viable attack over Bullet Punch,[comma] as it's still Metagross's strongest attack even with its the [this clears things up, since you don't want a bunch of "its" flying around and two things it could refer to] major nerf and it OHKOes almost every common switch-in with the exception of Giratina. Hammer Arm rounds out the coverage,[comma] and can OHKOing Dialga and physically defensive Ferrothorn with some prior damage, two Pokemon that who would otherwise be troubling. Hammer Arm hits most Steel-type Pokemon just as hard or harder than Earthquake. Despite this, Earthquake is still viable if you are particularly troubled by Electric Arceus, Jirachi, opposing Metagross,[comma] or even the tiny chance of missing. Just make sure to have a way to beat Ferrothorn.

[Additional Comments]

The given EV spread is standard for slow bulky attackers, maximizing and maximizes Attack and HP. An alternate spread of 252 HP / 56 Atk / 200 SpD with an Adamant nature can also be used, as this allows Metagross to take Spacial Rends and Draco Meteors much better while still retaining just enough power [mention to do what. Just enough power to do what?]. It also allows Metagross to survive a Choice Scarf Palkia's Fire Blast out of the sun even if it the Dragon uses a Modest nature. Zen Headbutt can be used is an option to reliably 2HKO Kyogre and Palkia while attaining a OHKO on Ho-Oh after Stealth Rock, although being locked in to a Psychic-type attack can give Dark-types a free turn. Ice Punch may look appealing to hit Dragons with, but a neutral Meteor Mash is just as strong as a super-effective Ice Punch, and while Rayquaza and Garchomp are OHKOed by Meteor Mash with a little Life Orb recoil anyway. Trick can also be used to cripple some of Metagross's common switch-ins such as Giratina isn't Tina immune to Trick? or is that -O or Skarmory, although Tricking Ho-Oh or Groudon a Choice Band will hurt Metagross more.

While Metagross has enough power to weaken most physical walls, it cannot finish them alone,[comma] meaning entry hazards help it immensely. Stealth Rock is required for Metagross to function properly, otherwise Bold Lugia and Ho-Oh would be much more reliable checks. Several layers of Spikes can also help Metagross substantially,[comma] as Groudon and Giratina would no longer be able to counter Metagross effectively. Ferrothorn and Forretress are the best spikers, can set up Stealth Rock,[comma] and the former can leave a large dent in Groudon with Power Whip.[period], although However, the common Fire-type weakness must be well covered. Tentacruel and its Toxic Spikes can also permanently cripple Groudon,[comma] although they aren't used to great effect on offensive teams and Giratina can easily Rest off the poison. Offensively, pokemon who can remove physical walls work wonders with Metagross. Mixed Rayquaza is an excellent example,[comma] by luring and destroying Groudon with its Draco Meteor while also being able to pill drive Giratina in to the ground with the same attack. They also share perfect synergy type wise. Mixed Giratina-O is also a great partner even without perfect type synergy,[comma] as it can counter Groudon very effectively with the added bonus of being able to spin block. Kyogre can negate Metagross's Fire-type weakness with its infinite Rain, and can freely spam its Water Spout should Metagross manage to weaken Palkia with Pursuit. remove space

[Other Options]

Metagross has a decent movepool, but few viable options. Metagross has many other moves it can run on its Choice Band set, although the ones listed are generally the best. ThunderPunch can be used for the 2HKO on Kyogre, Skarmory,[comma] and Ho-Oh, while Rock Slide can be used if one is especially paranoid about the latter. They are both quite weak otherwise though. Metagross can run a Trick+Iron Ball set,[comma] allowing it to take away its checks' 's Leftovers at worst, with the possibility of grounding Skarmory or Ho-Oh. Metagross could even Trick an Iron Ball to a faster Pokemon such aslike Mewtwo, thus crippling it for the rest of the match. 88 Speed EVs evs are recommended for such a set to outspeed for outspeeding everything up to Mewtwo after Tricking them an Iron Ball. More EVs could be used to beat faster Pokemon,[comma] but although this starts to detract from Metagross's its bulk. Just keep in mind that Metagross loses many OHKOes and 2HKOes without an item to boost its power. Metagross also has a good support movepool with Stealth Rock, Reflect, and Light Screen, although Ferrothorn and Bronzong are better at these jobs. Metagross also gets Hone Claws and Agility, although its only advantage over Groudon in these roles is its better defensive typing;[semicolon], otherwise,[comma] it's completely outclassed. Metagross can attempt to run a more defensively inclined set, and has Toxic to cripple some of its checks, but lacks recovery outside of Rest. Metagross can run an all out attacker set,[comma] but it needs Life Orb to do any real damage,[comma] which detracts from its bulk. Metagross also has lots of good special attacks which would be great if it had the Special Attack to go with it. Grass Knot can get a surprise 2HKO on Groudon though, with some investment. Finally Metagross has the gimmicky Gravity which grounds some of its checks, although it can often backfire. remove space

[Checks and Counters]

A universal counter to Metagross doesn't exist and must be beaten with prediction thanks to its sheer power. Many offensive Pokemon are 2HKOed with Meteor Mash even if they resist it. For example, Palkia is almost always 2HKOed after Stealth Rock. This is made worse by the fact that many of of its checks can be beaten with another move. Giratina is arguably the best counter,[comma] as it can easily survive a Meteor Mash and burn Metagross with Will-O-Wisp. Giratina must be kept in good health though,[comma] as it can run the risk of being 2HKOed by Meteor Mash with some prior damage and will despise Trick. Defensive Groudon is also a good counter,[comma] as it can survive a Meteor Mash and retaliate with Earthquake. Groudon will still be weakened from absorbing a Meteor Mash,[comma] though and can be 2HKOed with Spikes support. Ho-Oh is a decent check if Stealth Rock is off the field, as it can for being able to outspeed and OHKO Metagross with its Sacred Fire outside of the Rain. It cannot take a Zen Headbutt or ThunderPunch very well,[comma] though,[comma] and is destroyed by Rock Slide or Explosion. Skarmory and Bronzong are decent checks,[comma] as they can set up Spikes, screens,[comma] or Trick Room on Metagross,[comma] while the former can phaze Metagross as well. Both despise Trick,[comma] though and the former doesn't enjoy taking a ThunderPunch. The former will always lose one on one though thanks to Meteor Mash's Attack raising effect,[comma] while the latter must have Earthquake to have any chance of winning which is still not guaranteed. A physically defensive Ferrothorn also annoys Metagrossit greatly if it avoids Hammer Arm. Reshiram can survive a Meteor Mash and melt Metagross with Blue Flare regardless of the weather. Other then that Preying on Metagross's low Speed is often the easiest way too dispose of it,[comma] as many Pokemon have more than base 70 Speed.

[Dream World]

Metagross obtains Light Metal as its Dream World ability,[comma] which is quite useless compared to Clear Body,[comma] as Low Kick is non-existent and it resists Grass Knot anyway. Metagross improves however, because when Latias reappears and rubs its Soul Dew in the great sea leviathan'Kyogre's face, Metagross will rise alongside it and Pursuit the dragon it to death as it's a great check to the Soul Dew wielding dragon. Despite this, Metagross has a new chandelier to worry about because if it's not Raining then it can trap Metagross and OHKO with Overheat.

Maybe this will go off better...
