GSC Speed Tiers [GP 4/2]

{Approved by Nexus.}

In GSC, every Pokemon can fully invest in Speed, as Effort Values for every stat can be maximized. As such, most Pokemon will be running maximum Speed, and those Speed stats are shown below. There are various instances, however, where those Speed stats can change. For example, if your Jolteon Baton Passes an Agility boost to Snorlax as the opponent switches in Gengar, which Pokemon is faster?

First, you would find the Speed of Snorlax at +2 (158 * 2), which is 316. Gengar has a Speed of 318, meaning it will outspeed your Snorlax. Another example might be a Skarmory using Curse against Snorlax . In this case, Skarmory's Speed at -1 is 238 * 2/3, or 158.6667. Because a Pokemon cannot have a decimal in its stat, the remainder is simply dropped, leaving Skarmory at just 158, which causes a Speed tie with Snorlax.

Changes to Speed can be calculated as follows:

+6 = Speed * 8/2 (4)
+5 = Speed * 7/2 (3.5)
+4 = Speed * 6/2 (3)
+3 = Speed * 5/2 (2.5)
+2 = Speed * 4/2 (2)
+1 = Speed * 3/2 (1.5)
±0 = Speed * 2/2 (1)
-1 = Speed * 2/3 (0.6667)
-2 = Speed * 2/4 (0.5)
-3 = Speed * 2/5 (0.4)
-4 = Speed * 2/6 (0.3333)
-5 = Speed * 2/7 (0.2857)
-6 = Speed * 2/8 (0.25)

Now, for the actual Speed tiers themselves. For reference, Tier 1 Pokemon outspeed Snorlax after it receives an Agility boost. Tier 2 Pokemon still outspeed Snorlax after they use Curse.

In GSC, every Pokemon can fully invest in Speed, as Effort Values for every stat can be maximized. As such, most Pokemon will be running maximum Speed, and those Speed stats are shown below. There are various instances, however, where those Speed stats can change. For example, Jolteon Baton Passes an Agility boost to Snorlax as the opponent switches in Tauros. Which Pokemon is faster?

First, you would find the Speed of Snorlax at +2 (158 * 2), which is 316. Tauros has a Speed of 318, meaning it will outspeed your Snorlax. Another example might be a Skarmory using Curse against Snorlax: which is faster? In this case, Skarmory's Speed at -1 is 238 * 2/3, or 158.6667. Because a Pokemon cannot have a decimal in its stat, the remainder is simply dropped, leaving Skarmory at just 158: a Speed tie with Snorlax.

Changes to Speed can be calculated as follows:

+6 = Speed * 8/2 (4)
+5 = Speed * 7/2 (3.5)
+4 = Speed * 6/2 (3)
+3 = Speed * 5/2 (2.5)
+2 = Speed * 4/2 (2)
+1 = Speed * 3/2 (1.5)
±0 = Speed * 2/2 (1)
-1 = Speed * 2/3 (0.6667)
-2 = Speed * 2/4 (0.5)
-3 = Speed * 2/5 (0.4)
-4 = Speed * 2/6 (0.3333)
-5 = Speed * 2/7 (0.2857)
-6 = Speed * 2/8 (0.25)

Now, for the actual Speeds tiers themselves:

Tier 1

358 - Aerodactyl, Jolteon - Base 130
338 - Alakazam - Base 120
328 - Raikou, Starmie - Base 115
318 - Espeon, Gengar, Jumpluff, Tauros - Base 110

Tier 2

298 - Charizard, Entei, Tentacruel, Typhlosion, Miltank, Zapdos - Base 100
288 - Houndoom, Jynx - Base 95
278 - Kangaskhan, Moltres - Base 90
268 - Articuno, Heracross, Kingdra, Misdreavus, Nidoking, Suicune - Base 85
258 - Dragonite, Meganium - Base 80

Tier 3

238 - Cloyster, Skarmory - Base 70
228 - Scizor, Umbreon, Vaporeon - Base 65
220 - Tyranitar - Base 61
218 - Clefable, Lapras, Porygon2 - Base 60
208 - Ampharos, Blissey, Exeggutor, Machamp, Ursaring - Base 55
198 - Donphan, Muk - Base 50
188 - Golem, Marowak - Base 45
178 - Forretress, Rhydon - Base 40
158 - Snorlax, Steelix - Base 30

There are many Pokemon listed that I would not bother including. I would remove the following:

Ampharos
Lapras
Articuno
Entei lol
Jumpluff

Quagsire at Base 35 is worth slipping in Tier 3. As is Smeargle at Base 75 in Tier 2. And Electabuzz is (barely) worth mentioning at Base 105 in Tier 2.

It'd be good to explicitly explain what each of those tiers means in the header of each speed tier rather than just implied by the blurb at the beginning of the article. Tier 1 outpaces +2 Lax, Tier 2 outpaces Lax after a Curse, Tier 3 at best ties Lax after a Curse.

I'd also try to mention something along the lines of the following: In tier 3, basically every base speed is worth internalizing; in tier 2, base 85 and base 100 are the primary benchmarks for speed comparison within the tier; and in tier 1, Raikou is the main benchmark for comparison.

I think Jumpluff can stay. I'll agree that the rest in Pocket's post are not really worth mentioning, though. Tauros, Typhlosion, Ursaring, Golem, Aerodactyl, and even Kingdra and Donphan could all stand to be removed, too.

Yeah this has final GP checks and is way past QC apparently but I figure better late than never to throw out these suggestions and thoughts.

you just got prose'd

Thanks, Zystral, implemented ^.^

As for the Pokemon Pocket and Jorgen brought up: the initial list was just OU/BL mons, and, on gene's recommendation, I added Jumpluff as well. I don't mind adding in Quagsire, Smeargle, and Electabuzz, too. I'd rather not remove those 5, Pocket (especially pluff, since gene said to add that one), unless you feel they specifically shouldn't be listed. Otherwise, no harm in having more information on hand, right? :3

Edit: also added in the stuff about what defines the tiers, Jorgen :)

I changed Tauros to Gengar in the example, as Gengar is far more common anyway. Just noting that everything in Tier 1 outspeeds a +2 Snorlax. Everything in Tier 2 outspeeds +0 Snorlax while at -1, but is slower than a +2 Snorlax while at +0. If that makes sense >.>
