Leethoof vs. LouisCyphre in the ASB Arena! (reffed by Flamestrike)

Brandon sat in the seats of the ASB Arena, idly waiting for two of his fellow trainers to show up. They had invited him to come and watch their training match and he had agreed since he didn't have anything planned. Before long, the first of the two showed up. Lou was a veteran of ASB, and a potential future Gym leader. Not long after, Leethoof joined him in the arena. No slouch himself, Leethoof had just opened the Rock Gym, Monolith Hall, and he had also been around for a while. Brandon knew he was in for a good match. The rules were simple, but the match would be anything but.

Leethoof was the first to grab a Pokeball, and in a flash of red light his Stunfisk, Muddruckers, appeared. Stunfisk was a... weird Pokemon, to put it bluntly, but Brandon knew that it could still be dangerous in the right hands. He wondered just what Leethoof would do to make the most of Stunfisk's unique typing and skill set.

In response, Lou grabbed a Pokeball of his own, and a second red flash appeared. When the light disappeared, it revealed...

...a Feebas!?

Brandon was flummoxed momentarily, wondering why in the world Lou would bring such a weak Pokemon to a fight like this. However, a closer look revealed that this Feebas, as ugly as its species normally is, was somehow surprisingly beautiful and well-groomed. Brandon mused, and thought to himself, "Well, they say inside every ugly duckling is a beautiful swan waiting to emerge."

Bravely adventuring forth from the spawning pool, Grandeur caught the eye of a trainer by acting to her name, dislodging peers from rocks in the streambed and the like. Lifted from the stream barehanded, exhausted from rendering assistance, she now seeks to provide the same manner of assistance to a battling trainer's team.
However, not long after Grandeur hit the field, she started to glow a bright white! Before long the beautiful swan had emerged in the form of an evolution to Milotic! "Well, now this matchup will be interesting!" Brandon thought to himself as he reviewed the newly-evolved Pokemon's stats.

Grandeur is a matronly figure within a battling team, nurturing and protecting allies. That is not to say that she is without teeth, figuratively. Just as she did in the spawning stream, she disposes of foes that would do harm to those around her with efficiency and sternness.
Breaking him out of his study, Lou called up to him, "Hey Brandon, mind flipping a coin to see who orders first?"
"Sure, no problem!" Brandon pulled a loonie out of his pocket. "Heads says Lou orders first, tails says Leet!" he called back to the trainers in the arena. He flipped the coin...

-> RNG roll to see who orders first (1=Lou, 2=Leet) -> 2 (Leet)

..."Tails! Leet, looks like you're up first!" Leet grumbled while Lou smirked smugly, and the two took their places at opposite ends of the arena while their Pokemon eyed each other warily. Brandon had a quick thought and released a Pokemon of his own from its Pokeball; his Numel, Lavastrike. "Alright Lavastrike, how about we watch these two go at it? Maybe we'll learn something new!" The Numel nodded happily and the two settled in, ready to watch the battle.

As Brandon watched from the stands, both trainers shouted out their orders. Grandeur went first, erecting a Light Screen that shimmered in the sunlight. Just in time too, as Muddruckers fired off a Thunderbolt at the Milotic! However, the super-effective hit wasn't nearly as effective as Leethoof would have hoped, as the screen absorbed the worst of the blow.

Satisfied with her defenses, Grandeur took the opportunity to go on the offensive, swamping her opponent with a massive Surf! "Suddenly Stunfisk's unique typing isn't looking so hot," Brandon mused. "If it weren't for being part-Ground type, that Surf wouldn't have hit nearly as hard." It didn't help that Grandeur's Mystic Water boosted the attack as well. However, Muddruckers's bulkiness allowed it to absorb the blow, and it fired back with a Discharge! The electricity crackled around the Milotic, but again the Light Screen took the worst of the blow.

Following up her Surf, Grandeur sent a powerful Scald at Muddruckers! Thankfully for Leethoof the boiling water didn't burn his Stunfisk, but as Muddruckers fired another Thunderbolt at the Milotic only to have it mostly deflected by the screen, it became increasingly clear that this matchup was not in Leethoof's favour.

"The two of them are pretty even right now," Brandon thought to himself, "but that Light Screen gives Lou a huge advantage. I'm curious to see what Leet can think of to get himself out of this one." He turned to find out what Lavastrike thought of the match, only to find the Numel wasn't paying attention at all, instead absentmindedly following a butterfly lazily fluttering around his head. Brandon sighed. "I guess that's what you get when you have a Pokemon with Oblivious and Simple as abilities..." he muttered to himself, turning back to watch the rest of the match.

Brandon looked on as new orders were given and the match got underway. Grandeur started off once again, this time trapping her opponent in a vicious Whirlpool, and Leethoof winced as he saw that the Milotic had hit a weak point and scored a critical hit. However, Muddruckers took the blow relatively well, and instead of firing back opted to Rest up! Brandon wondered exactly what Leethoof was planning, but it was clear something was up.

Interestingly, Grandeur didn't move first in the next action, instead opting to prepare something big. Muddruckers took the opportunity to get off a Sleep Talk, and while the Discharge he fired off was yet again blunted by the Light Screen anything while asleep would be better than nothing. However, just then, Brandon found out just what Grandeur had been preparing; a massive Mega Brine! The attack crushed the poor Stunfisk who was still locked in the whirlpool and woke him up, but Lou was clearly disappointed that it hadn't ended the match. Then Brandon saw the wisdom in Leethoof's actions; by having Muddruckers rest to regain HP, he had kept the Milotic from getting the full power on her Mega Brine, and now Grandeur was wide open.

Leethoof made sure to take advantage of the situation; while Grandeur recovered from her combo Muddruckers nailed her with a picture-perfect Pain Split, draining vitality from the Milotic until the two were even in health! And to further even the playing field, the shimmer of the Light Screen slowly disappeared as it wore off, leaving both Pokemon almost dead even headed into the third round.

"That was a pretty great move by Leethoof to even the match," Brandon thought, "but it's going to take more than that to win. Still, it's impressive that he's gotten himself back into a match that seemed so unwinnable at the end of last round." He turned to see if Lavastrike was still tracking the butterfly, only to see that his Numel had fallen asleep, with the butterfly perched on top of it. After taking a moment to enjoy the sheer adorableness of the situation, he turned back to watch what might be the final round of the match.

Looking to end the match quickly, Leethoof ordered a massive finisher from Muddruckers, and the Stunfisk obliged. Charging up a ton of electrical energy despite the swirling whirlpool still trapping him, Muddruckers fired off a massive Thunderous Thunderbolt at Grandeur! Without the Light Screen to protect her, the Milotic was hit by the full force of the attack, and crumpled... Only to slowly rise back up, barely able to stay conscious, but glowing a bright white. Suddenly Grandeur unleashed her own energy right back at Muddruckers; a powerful Mirror Coat that had all the power of the Thunderous Thunderbolt and then some! Muddruckers took the attack head-on and had no chance; once Brandon was able to overcome the temporary flash-blindness, Muddruckers had clearly been knocked out, leaving Grandeur, though barely able to keep herself upright, as the victor. "Man, that was great guys!" Brandon called out from the stands. Leethoof recalled his Stunfisk, thanking it for a great effort, while Lou congratulated his Milotic before recalling it as well. The two shook hands and praised each other on a well-fought battle, and then the trainers left, to search for new adventures and new opportunities to get stronger.

Congratulations LouisCyphre!
