Lilligant

[Overview]

Lilligant is one of four Pokemon that receives Chlorophyll as its ability this generation. Although it's a pure Grass-type in a tier with many common Flying-types, it can do surprisingly well with Sunny Day support, even with its below average defenses. Keeping it alive is the biggest problem, though, as Lilligant can't take many hits. A decent base 90 Speed, high 110 base Special Attack, and access to Chlorophyll are Lilligant's strong points, so you'll find that with the right support, Lilligant can be a deadly foe.

[SET]
name: Sunny Day Special Attacker
move 1: Leaf Storm / Solarbeam
move 2: Hidden Power Rock
move 3: Sleep Powder
move 4: Protect / Quiver Dance
nature: Modest
ability: Chlorophyll
item: Life Orb
evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set is meant to be used under Sunny Day conditions. Leaf Storm and Solarbeam are the strongest STAB choices for Lilligant, and with Sunny Day Solarbeam does not have to waste a turn charging. Solarbeam is usually preferred as Leaf Storm will lower Lilligant's Special Attack two stages, but if Sunny Day support is unavailable Leaf Storm becomes the primary option. Sleep Powder allows Lilligant to support its team by putting opponents to sleep, and in the sun Lilligant can outspeed nearly every Pokemon and put it to sleep before it can attack. The choice between Protect or Quiver Dance is one between security and power. Protect is usually preferred, as many of the common Pokemon in VGC 2011 can OHKO Lilligant, and with Lilligant's weaknesses it will have few opportunities to set up with Quiver Dance. Protect allows Lilligant to shield itself from blows that could KO it while its teammates take out the threat. Hidden Power Rock hits the Flying-type Pokemon that resist Lilligant's STAB attacks, also nailing Chandelure for super effective damage. A Modest nature is preferred when the sun is up, because with Chlorophyll activated Lilligant is already outspeeding most Pokemon. Life Orb adds to the damage Lilligant can deal, and thus is the item of choice here.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

If you don't like the idea of Lilligant being OHKOed before it can attack, Focus Sash is a viable item in place of Life Orb. Quiver Dance allows Lilligant to set up after Sleep Powder, which is extremely useful if you can keep Lilligant from fainting. After a Quiver Dance Lilligant can OHKO Pokemon that normally counter it, such as Tornadus, Thundurus, and Chandelure, with Hidden Power Rock. With 252 EVs in Special Attack along with Life Orb, Lilligant can OHKO Terrakion with Solarbeam. With the sun up and 252 Speed EVs, the only Pokemon that can outspeed Lilligant are fellow Chlorophyll abusers Sawsbuck and Leavanny, which allows Lilligant to run a Modest nature with close-to-no drawbacks.

Fire-types or Wide Guard users are the best partners for Lilligant. Chandelure is common, so Heat Wave is definitely a threat. With a partner using Wide Guard and good prediction, Lilligant can avoid being OHKOed by Heat Wave, and hit back hard with a super effective Hidden Power Rock. A Fire-type partner discourages the use of Heat Wave by Chandelure and Volcarona. Whimsicott sets Sunny Day faster than any other Pokemon usable in the VGC 2011 tier, so it is definitely a good teammate for Lilligant. If Teeter Dance is being used, a partner with the ability Prankster can use Substitute to prevent becoming confused.

[Other Options]

Another possibility for Lilligant's STAB move would be Giga Drain. Although it has less power, the restored HP can really help Lilligant survive longer. Hidden Power Rock can allow 4 Speed EVs to be invested in HP instead. Hidden Power Ice can also be used over Hidden Power Rock; It still hits Flying-type Pokemon hard, and scores super effective damage on Hydreigon, but then Lilligant will not be able to do anything to Chandelure. Teeter Dance also deserves a mention, being able to confuse all Pokemon on the field. A partner with either Protect or Wide Guard is needed if Teeter Dance is going to be used, however, to keep Lilligant's partner from being confused too. With 100% accuracy and a 50% chance of the foe hurting itself in confusion, Teeter Dance could be considered more viable than Sleep Powder. Confusion from Teeter Dance either forces a switch or the opponent has to risk a 50% chance of hurting itself, which can ruin unprepared teams.

[Checks and Counters]

With Lilligant's below average defenses, most Fire- and Flying-type moves can OHKO it. The extremely common genies and Chandelure are definite threats that can easily take out Lilligant before it deals any damage. Amoonguss walls Lilligant, has access to Spore, and even with a Quiver Dance, Lilligant can only 3HKO physically defensive Amoonguss with Hidden Power Rock. Virizion can counter Lilligant lacking Hidden Power Ice, and even after a Quiver Dance Lilligant can manage a 2HKO on Virizion. Without Hidden Power Ice Lilligant is also walled by Hydregion, though after a Quiver Dance a Lilligant with Hidden Power Ice has a 92.3% chance to OHKO 4 / 0 Hydregion. The low accuracy of Sleep Powder makes it hard for Lilligant to survive more than one hit from anything if Sleep Powder misses.

just a small thing: thanks to hp rock, only 248 speed EVs are needed. also mention whimsicott to get up instant sun :3
edit: check changes from here

EVs: 4 Hp/ 252 SpA/ 252 Spe

to here

evs: 4 HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

edit edit: yeah i also meant that 248 and 252 get the same stat, but yeah i derped

Just a couple options I thought of: If Lilligant is paired with Archeops, Lilligant can use Entrainment or Worry Seed to change Archeops' Defeatist to something else. It can also use those moves to screw with Pokemon reliant on their abilities.

Lilligant can also use Helping Hand to boost the power of its partner's moves, or Safeguard to protect the team from status for a while (or Aromatherapy to cure it).

Focus Sash can also be considered to ensure Lilligant gets an attack in before going down.

So yeah, Lilligant's defenses aren't the best, but those options could work if pulled off right.

What has helped me many times before, is actually the usage of attract. Surprisingly, there is an influx of amount of males in the 5th generation metagame. A good viable set would be:

Lilligant @ Focus Sash
Name: Attract
Nature: Timid
Ability: Own Tempo
EV: 4HP / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Move 1: Attract
Move 2: Hidden Power Rock
Move 3: Quiver Dance
Move 4: Giga Drain / Petal Dance

Attract has 100% accuracy, and 50% Immobilization rate. Although this set probibly requires luck, it can be relied upon over Sleep Powder or Teeter Dance. Before anyone flames me, think about it. Lilligant has poor coverage by itself, relying on a Hidden power to cover its weaknesses. Putting this aside, If you are using this pokemon, generally you run the risk of encountering its most common counters, i.e. Dragons, etc. This pokemon would be much more suited in UU / NU rather then VGC's but at least this set gives a haxxy chance to set up + 2 Quiver Dance which enables Lilligant to outspeed most LO Dragons, etc.

Again, most users have male pokemon on their teams, as for some reason they are more dominant in battle. Few Genderless pokemon in 5th Generation can counter wall, save for Cryogonal And a Few dragons

Own Tempo and Petal Dance can be used also, to prevent confusion, amd a great STAB move.

This is just my diffrent and awkward take on Lilligant

[EDIT]
In the sun, Hidden Power Fire could be used.
With an added boost frok the sun, Lilligant can take down doubles Amoongus. Although this severly limits the ability to check other counters, it really is best to pair lilligant with a pokemon that can check her counters.

All of the males are because that is the default on PO. Youll have far less success on wifi.

I think Focus Sash deserves a mention with all of the Heat Waves and Acrobatics being thrown around. Also, if you're going to give Timid a mention in the set comments, you might as well slash it in with Modest, or drop the mention to AC or even OO.

Teeter Dance deserves a mention
Expand on this a bit maybe?

Done. n_n as for the other sets, I really don't think they should be mentioned as VGC is way to fast paced to really set up anything.

expand on teeter dance like JRank said, 1/2

Oh and just a nitpick, I would prefer if HP Rock and Sleep Powder's order were switched.

There's only so much this can do. Expand on Teeter Dance. Otherwise OK.

Mention Prankster Sub as a partner for Teeter Dance, since the sub will block the confusion.
