Cubone (Analysis)

[Overview]

<p>Without a doubt, Cubone is valued almost entirely for a single trait: access to Thick Club. This unique item doubles its Attack stat with no penalty, making it an extremely dangerous force in the Little Cup metagame. In fact, with its signature item, Cubone can reach an Attack stat as high as 30, easily overpowering all Pokemon without a Choice Band. Cubone is not a one-trick pony either, as its phenomenal base Defense stat of 95 allows it to switch into physical attacks and even wall some attackers, although its typing isn't helping it much in that regard.</p>

<p>Cubone also has some other attributes that make it a great choice, such as its very impressive movepool and good offensive typing. Cubone's Ground typing does, however, leave it with three common weaknesses and few resistances. Overall, Cubone is usually a huge asset to any team that it works well on despite its minor restrictions.</p>

[SET]
name: Baton Pass Receiver
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Swords Dance
move 3: Fire Punch
move 4: Double-Edge
item: Thick Club
nature: Adamant
ability: Rock Head
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 36 SpD / 236 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Baton Pass receiving is Cubone's trademark talent, and there is a reason behind this. 30 Attack gives Cubone a chance to sweep, and its only problem is a lack of Speed; however, using the utility of Baton Pass, Cubone's objective becomes a lot easier. With an Agility or Rock Polish boost, Cubone will outspeed and defeat many common threats who would normally defeat it, such as Carvanha, Staryu, and Choice Scarf Snover. Cubone's great bulk means it can receive boosts very well from common Baton Pass users such as Deerling and Venonat who both have good synergy with it. The aforementioned Pokemon also have unique traits which make them great for passing to Cubone, namely Sleep Powder and Sap Sipper.</p>

<p>While Cubone's Attack is already very high, Swords Dance makes Cubone's life much easier. The best strategy is to pass to Cubone while facing a Pokemon who is easily scared by it. Fire- and Rock-type Pokemon are great examples because it is almost guaranteed that they will switch to an opponent ready to take Earthquake, such as Gastly. Cubone can then use Swords Dance and sweep. With such high Attack and perfect coverage, nothing is stopping Cubone any time soon once it sets up.</p>

<p>Earthquake is the crux of Cubone's sweep. Any Pokemon that is hit at least neutrally with Earthquake will probably die, and its coverage with Fire Punch is excellent, hitting all but Mantyke, Ducklett, and Wingull for neutral damage. Swords Dance comes into play to raise Cubone's Attack to high levels, which can go up to 60 after one use. Double-Edge is considered a filler, but it is the best filler Cubone can possibly have as it completes the the coverage chart and does good damage to physically defensive Pokemon.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>Buizel, Deerling, and Venonat are all excellent choices for Baton Pass users. Buizel can pass Agility and Bulk Up to Cubone, aiding it in Attack and Speed, which are both necessary to sweep, as well as giving it a nice boost in Defense. While they share a Grass-type weakness, Buizel can Baton Pass to Cubone to avoid Electric-type attacks, and people won't aim Water- or Ice-type attacks at Buizel, so Cubone won't come in being hit by a super effective attack other than Grass-type moves. An option to avoid Grass-type attacks is to pass to Deerling. Deerling's unique ability, Sap Sipper, will generate an Attack boost when hit by Grass-type moves, and this boost can be passed to Cubone. Deerling can also pass Work Up, Swords Dance, and Agility to Cubone to aid a mixed or physical sweep, and it can set up Light Screen to make Cubone very sturdy. Venonat can come in on a Grass-type move and use Agility on the switch. Then, it can move first and put the opponent to sleep using Sleep Powder, and Baton Pass to Cubone or another Pokemon to create a chain that will end up with Cubone.</p>

<p>Lastly, ThunderPunch can be used in the last slot if desired. It has the same minimum damage as Earthquake against Slowpoke, but its range is bigger than Earthquake's, meaning it can do more damage with a bit of luck.</p>

[Other Options]

<p>The Baton Pass set can be used in Trick Room too. An identical moveset with an EV spread of 196 HP / 196 Atk / 76 Def / 36 SpD and a Brave nature is ideal for a Trick Room sweep. Solosis and Bronzor are both sturdy and powerful teammates who can set up Trick Room for Cubone. An all-out attacker set with Earthquake, Fire Punch, Double-Edge, and ThunderPunch is viable. Bulldoze is also an option on any set if you want Cubone to outspeed the opponent without Speed boosts. Cubone's support arsenal is pretty wide as it has access to Stealth Rock, Knock Off, Perish Song, and some other helpful moves such as Toxic and Detect. 30 Defense with an Impish nature and Eviolite is possible, making Cubone actually play a good support role, although the lack of recovery makes this a bad choice. Additionally, you may use random filler options such as Substitute if you like their utility.</p>

[Checks and Counters]

<p>Cubone is obviously best in a Baton Pass chain, and users of Taunt can disrupt the it. Since there isn't much to stop Taunt due to Natu, the only Pokemon in LC with Magic Bounce, not being able use Baton Pass legally with it, it is important to have Taunt on your team to stop Baton Pass. While they are very obscure, Baton Pass chains can score some easy KOs on your team. Wooper is a great Cubone check as its ability, Unaware, ignores any boosts to Cubone's Attack. On top of this, it can hit it with super effective STAB Waterfall, which will 2HKO it. Unaware doesn't, however, ignore Thick Club's boost, so there is no full stop to Cubone.</p>

<p>With a bit of prediction, you can switch in Staryu or Shellder into Cubone without any Speed boosts and easily OHKO it. This is usually the best way to defeat Cubone itself because the sheer force of its attacks will not have to be faced. Lastly, priority in the form of Ice Shard and Aqua Jet can defeat a weakened Cubone, although they are both physical.</p>

Maybe mention Vulpix in AC, because the loss of an Aqua Jet weakness is pretty nice

Mention the fact that sun sweepers can outspeed it before a +2 boost and some, like Bellsprout and Cherubi can tie even after a +2 boost and threaten an OHKO with Solarbeam

Lightningrod doesn't work on Cubone because it's immune to electric attacks

Substitute can also be usable

<[sup] Sup.

[Overview]

* Stupid attack stat of 28 or 30 with a Thick Club
* Very high Defense stat capable of reaching 20 You never run max+ defense on cubone becase you're trying to sweep shit, just mention it's base 95 and leave it at that.
* Great overall movepool on both sides of the attacking spectrum
* Good offensive typing
* Impressive Baton Pass receiver
* Cute and has a bone

[SET]
name: Baton Pass Receiver
move 1: Earthquake
move 2: Rock Slide Swords Dance
move 3: Fire Punch
move 4: Double-Edge / Ice Beam
item: Thick Club
nature: Jolly Adamant > Jolly, you hit 26 speed anyways, and 18 speed scarfers are really uncommon in this meta.
ability: Rock Head
EVs: 36 HP / 196 Atk / 36 SpD / 236 Spe

Rock slide gets coverage on fliers who are basically... taillow, doduo, and other stuff that gets wrecked by a thick club and possibly +2 fire punch. Double Edge is solely for gligar it looks like, and ice beam sort of does that better, though having a spammable base 120 normal move is nice. Imo, killing gligar before boosts is nicer.

[SET COMMENTS]

* 28 Attack 'nuff said.
* Three weaknesses is a bit steep but it's worth it if you pass correctly.
* Earthquake is very powerful and Rock Slide adds coverage.
* Fire Punch is for Ferroseed and Bronzor who can take the other moves even after a Swords Dance boost.
* Double-Edge is a filler move that can be used to hit Gligar and other defensive crap

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

* Takes boosts from Buizel, Meditite, or Deerling all very well. Bulk Up (or Swords Dance in Deerling's case) and Agility are all great for Cubone, especially the latter that retains a great Speed stat for Cubone.
* Gligar can use Taunt on stuff like Taunt Misdreavus and Taunt Gligar who ruin all the fun, and Gligar can pass Agility or Swords Dance. Gligar makes a bad passer because of shared weaknesses. At least suggest something like venonat (who is a really really reliable agility passer with compoundeyes sleep powder).
* Mime Jr. can pass and Soundproof can block Roar from Hippopotas and other users. Both gligar and venonat stop phazing (taunt, or sleep powder). Plus Mime Jr. sucks, and once you're in on hippo what do you do anyways? Encore the roar... great, now you can't pass or you get phazed.
* If you want to use ThunderPunch instead of Double-Edge, its damage range against Slowpoke goes higher than Earthquake's, but they have the same minimum.
* You can ditch the last slot to Swords Dance and just have Cubone be a solo sweeper or be passed Rock Polish or Agility.
* Drought is always nice to have to weaken random Aqua Jets, so Vulpix is a good partner. They also have good defensive synergy as they resists most of each other's weaknesses other than the odd shared Water weakness, which is nerfed by the sun anyway.

[Other Options]

* Cubone gets some pretty good special moves if you want to run a mixed set for Gligar with Ice Beam or Icy Wind With 36 evs, naive/naughty, and stealth rock it's a guaranteed ohko on gligar. Unless I'm missing something, the only coverage added by double edge is mantyke. and... lotad? Doduo and Taillow are both koed by an unboosted fire punch after SR, and taillow has a decent shot to be koed before sr.
* It gets Belly Drum, which when combined with Oran Berry and Cubone's immense phyiscal bulk, can be very destructive. Make sure to emphasise how bad this set is.
* A plain physical attacker set is possible.
* You can run a support set with defensive EVs and use good support moves such as Stealth Rock, Knock Off, and Perish Song. While it's techincally a niche, again, make sure to mention how there are better users of sr. Also in LC Perish Song is not a good support move, it's extremely mediocre at best.
* You can try Bulldoze over Rock Slide to get Cubone to outspeed all unboosted Pokemon after one hit, which is cool.

[Checks and Counters]

* Taunt users can ruin a Baton Pass chain
* Wooper has super effective Water-type STAB and doesn't care about Swords Dance, although Unaware doesn't ignore Thick Club. Wooper takes 68-80% from thick club naughty/adamant earthquake, and though it does 77-90% with waterfall, that's not a ko after stealth rock, and it falls with a little residual damage.
* Gligar can take any non-Ice-type move from Cubone and use Toxic on it or stall it out with Roost and Substitute
* Fast Water-types such as Staryu can OHKO it with Water-type moves if they can switch in
* Monmen Cottonee can come in Earthquake and use Encore It takes around 40% from an unboosted eq, and fire punch can destroy it if it tries to get fancy and predict a switch. Best case scenario, if it's at full health, it cripples itself while encoring an eq.
* Carvanha gets priority Aqua Jet and Snover gets priority Ice Shard, both of which are super effective.
* Sun sweepers will crack its skull

Ice beam needs a spot
Naughty > Naive
Passing speed should be the main goal, not attack boosts
Other minor stuff

there is not enough trick room itt, bronzor resists 2/3 weaknesses (grass and ice), eggy does too (water and grass), as well as slowpoke (water and ice), and 30 attack cubone throwing around STAB EQs while outspeeding everything is pretty damn cool. clamperl and cubone make tr so, so fun

also substitute needs a mention over double edge, just because cubone has rock head does not make double edge good

mention bonemerang to...break subs? It's also a signature attack.

mention the hazarders of lc, dwebble and ferroseed, 'cause cubone loves them lots

also nails grats on qc

Thanks dark.

Totally forgot trick room but it was the standard set last gen. Test the 4 attacks set, i'm dying to know how that works (live a hit, ohko something, die).

Bonemerang is a waste of a coverage moveslot unless you're running it over eq... if you are confident in your luck it can work but it's not good.

Cubone loves dem hazards.

IMO Trick Room is just the first set with a different EV spread and nature. I'll put it in AC.

move 3: Fire Punch
move 4: Double-Edge / Ice Beam I'm pretty sure Gligar survives Ice Beam. I mentioned it in OO. With the 36 EVs shifted from SpD to SpA it does 22-26, always a ko after sr and it can ko max hp gligar without rocks (though unlikely).

Double-Edge also gets Mantyke, Ducklett, Wingull, and does a lot more damage to stuff that resist Earthquake.

Wingull is always koed by +2 fire punch after rocks, and sometimes before rocks. Ducklett is always ohkoed after rocks (assuming max speed/SpA). All but the most physically bulky mantyke are 2hkoed by +2 fire punch after rocks, and while this isn't reliable, mantyke had 1.5% usage last month. Ground/Fire is good enough coverage that you can afford to run a move that allows you to beat gligar unboosted.

And it still deserves a slash. Ice Beam is better in this meta though, since people WILL go to gligar to counter Cubone.

One shared weakness doesn't make it bad, but I'll mention Venonat. Water and Ice. Slowpoke and Snover are THE switch ins to gligar and both can annihilate cubone. Venonat isn't even that great synergy wise, it's just a fantastic agility passer that I posted then. Ledyba is the best passer for purely synergy as it lures rock and electric attacks, and after agility it can nail snover with a stab bug buzz, which always koes choice scarf variants without SR support.

Kind of went off on a tangent there but whatever. Say something about Ledyba's synergy and mention Venonat I guess.
* Mime Jr. can pass and Soundproof can block Roar from Hippopotas and other users. Both gligar and venonat stop phazing (taunt, or sleep powder). Plus Mime Jr. sucks, and once you're in on hippo what do you do anyways? Encore the roar... great, now you can't pass or you get phazed.

[Overview]

<p>Without a doubt, Cubone is valued almost entirely for a single trait: acces to Thick Club. This unique item doubles its Attack stat with no penalty, making it an extremely dangerous force in the Little Cup metagame. In fact, with its signature item, Cubone can reach an Attack stat as high as 30, easily overpowering all Pokemon without a Choice Band. Cubone is not a one-trick pony either as its phenomenal base Defense stat of 95 allows it to switch into physical attacks and even wall some attackers, although its typing isn't helping it much in that instance regard.</p>

<p>Cubone also has some other factors attributes that make it a great choice of a battler such as its very impressive movepool and good offensive typing. Cubone's Ground-typing does, however, leave it with three common weaknesses and few resistances. All-in-all, Cubone is usually an huge asset to any team that it works well on despite its minor restrictions.</p>

[SET COMMENTS]

<p>Baton Passing receiving is Cubone's trademark talent, and there is a reason behind this. 30 Attack is very inviting for gives Cubone a chance to sweep, and its only problem is a lack of Speed.; however, Uusing the utility of Baton Pass, however, Cubone's objective becomes a lot easier. With an Agility or Rock Polish boost, Cubone will outspeed and defeat many common threats who would normally defeat Cubone it such as Carvanha, Staryu, and Choice Scarf Snover. Cubone's great amount of bulk means it can receive passes very well from common passers such as Deerling and Venonat who both have good synergy with it. The aforementioned Pokemon Space needs to be here also have unique passing traits which make them great for passing to Cubone, namely Sleep Powder and Sap Sipper, respectively.</p>

<p>While Cubone's Attack is already very high, Swords Dance makes Cubone's life much easier. The best strategy is to pass to Cubone while facing a Pokemon who is easily scared by it. Fire- and Rock-type Pokemon are great examples because it is almost guaranteed that they will switch to an opponent ready to take Earthquake such as Gligar. Cubone can then use Swords Dance and sweep. With such high attack and perfect coverage, nothing is stopping Cubone any time soon.</p>

Lastly, Double-Edge and Ice Beam are both excellent choices for Cubone. Double-Edge is considered a filler, but it is the best filler Cubone can possible have as it completes the the coverage chart and does good damage to physical defenders. Double-Edge will almost always hit harder than Ice Beam after a Swords Dance, but if you're looking to mainly use Cubone without Swords Dance, Ice Beam is crucial to defeat Gligar.</p>

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

<p>For optimal success with Ice Beam, you want Cubone's Special Attack as high as possible. Since Cubone's Special Attack stat will benefit from 36 EVs, you can move the Special Defense EVs to Special Attack. This also means you should run a Naughty nature on Cubone so as not to not hinder its Special Attack. Be aware, however, that doing this will crush Cubone's Special Defense stat. To remedy this, you can just do one or the other if you want to retain what special bulk Cubone already has I do not know what this sentence is supposed to say, but it isn't saying it. Similarly, you may run a Lonely nature to reduce Cubone's Defense instead, but it will mean that Cubone won't be able to come in on just about any physical attack anymore Cubone will have to be wary of switching in to some physical attacks.</p>

<p>Buizel, Deerling, and Venonat are all excellent choices for Baton Passers. Buizel can pass Agility and Bulk Up to Cubone, aiding it in Attack and Speed, which are both necessary to sweep, as well as giving it a nice boost in Defense. While they share a Grass weakness, Buizel can Baton Pass to Cubone to avoid Electric-type attacks, and people won't aim Water- or Ice-type attacks at Buizel, so Cubone won't come in being hit by a super effective attack other than Grass-types. An option to avoid Grass-type attacks is to pass to Deerling. Deerling's unique ability, Sap Sipper, will generate an Attack boost when hit by Grass-type moves, and this boost can be passed Cubone. Deerling can also pass Work Up, Swords Dance, and Agility to Cubone to aid a mixed or physical sweep, and it can set up Light Screen to make Cubone very sturdy. Venonat can come in on a Grass-type move and use Agility on the switch. Then, it can move first and put the opponent to sleep using Sleep Powder. Venonat, afterward, will use Baton Pass to Cubone, or can pass to another Pokemon to create a chain that will end up with Cubone depending on who your opponent switches to.</p>

An identical moveset will an EV spread of 196 HP / 196 Atk / 76 Def / 36 SAtk or SpD (depending on what move you use in the fourth slot), and a Brave nature is ideal for a Trick Room sweep. Solosis and Bronzor are both sturdy and powerful teammates who can set up Trick Room for Cubone. An all-out attacker set with Earthquake, Fire Punch, Double-Edge, and ThunderPunch is viable. Bulldoze is also an option on any set if you want Cubone to outspeed things without Speed boosts. Cubone's support arsenal is pretty wide as it has access to Stealth Rock, Knock Off, Perish Song, and some other helpful moves such as Toxic and Detect. 30 Defense with an Impish nature and Eviolite is possible, making Cubone actually play a good support role, although no the lack of recovery is a bummer. Additionally, you may use random fillers such as Substitute if you like them.</p>

While they are very obscure, Baton Pass chains it can score some huge easy KOs on your team.

Lastly, priority in the form of Ice Shard and Aqua Jet can defeat a weakened Cubone, albeit although they' are both physical.</p>

All-in-all Overall, Cubone is usually a huge asset to any team that it works well on despite its minor restrictions.</p>

Cubone's great bulk means it can receive passes boosts very well from common Baton Pass users such as Deerling and Venonat who both have good synergy with it.

Fire- and Rock-type Pokemon are great examples because it is almost guaranteed that they will switch to an opponent ready to take Earthquake, such as Gligar.

Lastly, Double-Edge and Ice Beam are both excellent choices for Cubone. Double-Edge is considered a filler, but it is the best filler Cubone can possible have as it completes the the coverage chart and does good damage to physically defensive Pokemon. Someone might want to go over this again. There are a few more grammar mistakes, as well as some awkward phrasings/ run-on sentences. I would do it, but I don't feel like going through and undoing all of the previous edits

Could you please point out where these mistakes are? If no one caught them in two GP checks from the experts and a read-over by the writer, you're probably going to have to locate them for us.

tl;dr show me where there is a mistake and I will fix it

The main problem is sentence structure. Some of the sentences were just way too long. The easier solution is to simply cut them down, rather than trying to fit an absurd amount of information into a simple sentence.

There were also some instances where the phrases made absolutely no sense. If you read the sentence out loud, you would understand how absurd and awkward it sounded.

There were also several instances where you were not clearly writing the point you were trying to portray. It took me a few minutes in some cases to figure out what some of the sentences were trying to explain.

These are, of course, all meaningless edits if you so choose. I hope that I was able to help you out a bit!
