QC Checks: 2/2 [Comatthew6] [Diana]
GP Checks: 2/2 [jc104] [V0x]

[Overview]

At first glance, Snorunt doesn't seem worth using, especially when compared to all of the other Little Cup Pokemon. However, Snorunt has some things going for it such as its ability, Ice Body, which lets it recover health when in hail. Though its movepool is limited, it has just enough decent moves to be effective. Snorunt unfortunately brings many disadvantages, especially in its Base Stats, which are all 50. Another flaw would be its weakness to Fighting-type attacks, since Scraggy and Mienfoo are on nearly every team and love to throw around their powerful STAB moves. Despite these downsides, Snorunt is not a bad Pokemon, and should actually be seriously considered for your team.

[SET]
name: Spiker
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Hidden Power Ground
move 4: Ice Shard
item: Oran Berry
ability: Ice Body / Inner Focus
nature: Naive
evs: 36 HP / 36 Atk / 36 Def / 196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

The first priority of this set is to set up as many layers of Spikes as possible, allowing a sweeper to obtain additional KOs. Snorunt has less-than-average stats all-around, though, which means it may struggle to survive one hit so that it can set up Spikes. This problem is compounded by Snorunt's weakness to types that are now very common, such as Fighting and Fire. In any case, Ice Beam is a decent STAB attack that will make the recently popular Taillow think twice before switching into it. Hidden Power Ground is used to hit Fire- and Steel-types, such as Houndour and Magnemite, that would otherwise counter this set. Ice Shard gives Snorunt a STAB priority attack that proves very useful when an opposing Pokemon is low on HP.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The EV spread maximizes Snorunt's Special Attack and Speed stats, and the rest are put into HP, Attack, and Defense. Ice Body should be used only if Snover is a teammate; otherwise, Inner Focus is preferred to prevent Snorunt from flinching. Partner-wise, Snover is perhaps the best, as it provides everlasting hail for Ice Body recovery and grants 100% Accuracy to Blizzard for Snorunt to abuse instead of Ice Beam. A sweeper, such as Scraggy, would make a great partner, as it would benefit from the damage that Spikes cause to opposing grounded Pokemon. Frillish is a good partner because it blocks Rapid Spin and checks Hippopotas, which changes the weather against Snorunt's favor. If Snover is KOed, Hippopotas becomes a bigger problem since it changes the weather from hail to sandstorm, which damages rather than heals Snorunt.

[SET]
name: Disable
move 1: Disable
move 2: Ice Beam
move 3: Crunch / Shadow Ball
move 4: Ice Shard
item: Oran Berry
ability: Ice Body / Inner Focus
nature: Naive
evs: 36 HP / 36 Atk / 36 Def / 196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Disable is a great move to use right after switching in Snorunt, as it will prevent the opposing Pokemon from using the last move they used for 4-7 turns, which could easily let Snorunt wall a sweeper. Ice Beam is used so that Snorunt can check Dratini and Taillow; it will OHKO both of them without requiring prior damage. Crunch hits Gastly and Drifloon for a good amount of damage, and hits Munchlax stronger than Ice Beam does. Unfortunately, Crunch still does very little damage, especially if Munchlax is running an Eviolite. Shadow Ball provides similar coverage but isn't able to hit Munchlax and other Normal-types. Ice Shard, again, is a decent STAB priority attack that Snorunt can use to revenge kill most Pokemon at low health.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The given EV spread is the same as the one in the Spiker set, which is the best one that Snorunt can use. Again, Ice Body should only be used if running Snover; otherwise, Inner Focus would be the better option. Besides Snover, Frillish is a good partner, as it resists all types that are super effective against Snorunt except for Rock, which is not very common anyway. Dwebble is good too, as it can set up Stealth Rock and Spikes to wear down opponents and make them easier for Snorunt to KO. Also, disabling one of a sweeper's moves could be vital, as it may cause a switch-out, letting you get the upper hand.

[Other Options]

Snorunt can use Water Pulse to hit unsuspecting Fire-types, but it won't offer much more coverage. Snorunt could use Fake Tears when a Pokemon switches in and then deal major damage with a STAB Ice Beam or Blizzard, but chances are most Pokemon will outpace Snorunt at 15 Speed. It could also run a Rest + Sleep Talk set, but its defenses aren't good enough, and its poor attacking stats would make it a liability while using Sleep Talk. A Focus Sash + Avalanche set would be viable if Snorunt's Attack stat was a little higher. Protect is a good move to have so that Snorunt can heal from the hail with Ice Body.

[Checks and Counters]

Any Pokemon that can outpace Snorunt and deal damage with a neutral attack can probably OHKO it because of its poor defenses. Fighting-types in general, such as Mienfoo, Timburr, and Scraggy, easily OHKO Snorunt with a STAB Drain Punch or High Jump Kick. Houndour and other Fire-types check Snorunt with their super effective STAB attacks. Munchlax doesn't even take 20% from Crunch without an Eviolite, and it won't be taking much from Ice Beam either, so it's a good counter. Hippopotas's ability to change the weather to sandstorm affects Snorunt's usefulness. Bulky waters, such as Chinchou and Frillish, wall Snorunt, but Frillish must watch out for Crunch or Shadow Ball.

[Dream World]

Snorunt's Dream World ability, Moody, which raises a random stat by two stages and decreases one by one stage, is banned because it makes certain Pokemon overpowered.

sub disable set could work. sub / disable / frostbreath / hiddenpower ground could work. bulkie spikes mite work with spikes / protect / ice beam / filler could work.choice scarf could work too, it hits 14 speed with 196spe and a neutral nature so 196spa / 196spe modest?

I think Spikes might be the best option. Ice STAB and Disable mean it's not totally outclassed. Actually that might be an interesting thing to test tomorrow, I'll get back to you on that. Can't see much else being good on Snorunt.

i tested out the ice STAB and Disable set. but this was the set that i made: ice beam (because i don't use snover), ice shard, crunch, and disable. going with some of the moves pie cream told me to for spikes set, but i made changes. will put scarf in oo. not sure if it is worth it.

[Overview]
- has average base stats, all hitting 50.
- a limited movepool, but has just enough to let it be effective
- best used with snover because of ice heal
- the common fighting-types easily counter it
- overall an okay pokemon to use

[SET]
name: Spiker
move 1: Spikes
move 2: Blizzard / Ice Beam
move 3: Hidden Power Ground
move 4: Ice Shard
item: Oran Berry
ability: Ice Heal / Inner Focus
nature: Naive
evs: 36 HP / 36 Atk / 36 Def / 196 SpA / 196 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]
- Snorunt is given Spikes, which makes it a lot more effective
- Blizzard is used mainly if Snover if being used on the same team
- Ice Beam should only be used if not using Snover; otherwise, blizzard is probably better
- Hidden Power Ground is used to counter Fire- and Steel-types that would otherwise counter Snorunt
- Ice Shard gives Snorunt a STAB priority that was very effective when tested
- hard to set up because of weakness to Fighting-type attacks

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]
- EV spread maximizes Special Attack and Speed, and the rest is put into HP, Attack, and Defense
- Ice Heal is used if Snover is being used; Inner Focus should be used if not using Snover
-

I think it's Ice Body.

-Ice Beam over Blizzard - you're not going to have 2 Ice-types in THIS metagame.
-in the first set, Frillish is a good partner since it blocks spin and also fares quite well against Hippopotas
-Blizzard and Ice Beam do less damage to Fire-types.... blizzard would be 90; Ice Beam 71. Water Pulse would hit 120, so remove the second part of that sentence
- Tentacool beats the first set

Do what I said, and you can has

Get rid of blizzard, it's very situational. Just mention it in additional comments but take if off of the set.

mention protect in Other Options because it works well with ice body

Houndour cant switch into HP Ground and Stealth Rock, so rephrase that.

I'm pretty sure that Munchlax takes poor damage from Crunch, so I'd rephrase that too.
16.3% - 19.2% without Eviolite

You're missing a nature on the second set.

Also, why is Oran Berry used over Eviolite? Not telling you to change it, just asking

okay i implemented both of your comments.

@coma: you lied; you did put a stamp on

@moo: when i tested the sets out, Oran Berry was more useful than an Eviloite

A sweeper, such as Scraggy, would make a great partner, as it would benefit from the damage that Spikes would cause to opposing grounded Pokemon that are not part Flying or have Levitate. Fighting-types in general counter Snorunt, as they would can OHKO it with Drain Punch. Tentacool checks this set because of its high Special Defense stat, and can then set up Toxic Spikes and soon finish it off with a STAB Sludge Bomb.
(counters should go in the counters section unless you are going to explain how to deal with them)
