Hippopotas

[Overview]

As the only Pokemon in the UU tier that has access to the Sand Stream ability, Hippopotas fills an important role. With Sand Stream, it is capable of setting up permanent sandstorm, which many Pokemon benefit from, from Rock-types to Pokemon with certain abilities. Hippopotas also received a gift in the form of Eviolite in BW, which boosts its Defense to massive levels while also giving it a respectable Special Defense stat. While its main job is to set up a permanent sandstorm, Hippopotas can also support its team ably with its bulk and access to support moves such as Stealth Rock, Toxic, Roar, and Yawn, as well as a reliable recovery move in Slack Off. However, Hippopotas is completely shut down by Taunt, as its minuscule Attack stat prevents it from dealing any significant damage, even with STAB Earthquake. Its Ground typing also hands it weaknesses to common Water-, Grass-, and Ice-type attacks, which are often special. These flaws won't stop Hippopotas from doing its main job though, which is that of setting up permanent sandstorm.

[SET]
name: UU Physically Defensive
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Slack Off
move 3: Toxic / Roar
move 4: Earthquake
item: Eviolite
ability: Sand Stream
nature: Impish
evs: 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

As stated before, Hippopotas's main job is to get permanent sandstorm up, so it's best to lead with it. Stealth Rock gives Hippopotas something to do in the first turn, supporting its team with an entry hazard. Slack Off keeps Hippopotas healthy, should it be needed again during the battle; for example, if the sandstorm disappears, you can be sure to bring it back later in the match. Toxic and Roar give Hippopotas more options with which to support its teammates. The former spreads status, making it harder for the opponent to switch a counter in unless they have a cleric waiting in the ranks. Roar, however, helps in getting rid of the opponent's stat boosts and racking up hazard damage; it is the better choice for offensive teams, as it keeps you from losing momentum, while stall-oriented teams appreciate Toxic more. Earthquake gives Hippopoats a means of attacking, should it fall prey to Taunt.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Bulldoze is a usable move over Earthquake for Hippopotas to support its team even more by lowering the opponent's Speed stat. Yawn works in a similar way to Roar, as it can force switches. With the above EVs, an Impish nature, and the Eviolite, Hippopotas also has stats that are similar to Hippowdon with the same EVs and nature (340 HP / 420 Def / 182 SpD vs. 420 HP / 368 Def / 181 SpD).

Of course, teammates that benefit from sandstorm are ideal. Stoutland benefits from sandstorm thanks to its Sand Rush ability, which doubles its Speed stat. Cacturne loves playing in sandstorm too, as it can abuse the evasion boosts it gets from its Sand Veil ability. Rock-types such as Omastar, Regirock, Cradily, and Rhyperior also benefit from sandstorm, as it will raise their Special Defense. If you feel your team needs Toxic Spikes support, Nidoqueen makes an excellent choice, as she is immune to sandstorm. Omastar can also set up Toxic Spikes, as well as Spikes. Also, if Wish and cleric support in terms of Aromatherapy is needed, Clefable makes a better choice than Chansey, as Magic Guard protects it from sandstorm damage.

[Other Options]

Crunch hits Celebi, and other Grass-types for that matter, harder than Earthquake, but Hippopotas's Attack stat isn't high enough to do any sigificant damage. The only exceptions are Roserade and the rare Ferroseed and Cradily, who are neutral to Earthquake. Rock Slide can hit Flying-types that are immune to Earthquake harder than Crunch. Whirlwind is an option over Roar if you are afraid of Soundproof Pokemon, but it is illegal with Stealth Rock. Stockpile and Curse are options to boost Hippopotas's defenses, and the latter boosts its Attack as well, adding more sting to its attacks, but its tiny offensive movepool makes this a terrible choice. Hippopotas also got access to Rest and Sleep Talk for instant recovery, but it must sacrifice one useful move.

[Checks and Counters]

Suicune takes little damage from Hippopotas's moves, shrugs off Toxic with Rest, and hits back with super effective Water-type moves. Though it will need to watch out for Toxic,Abomasnow resists Earthquake, eliminates sandstorm with permanent hail, and hits Hippopotas hard with super effective STAB moves. Celebi checks Hippopotas very well, too, as it resists Earthquake, doesn't bother about Toxic thanks to Natural Cure, and wrecks Hippopotas with its STAB Grass-type moves. Slowbro and Gorebyss laugh at all of Hipopotas's attacks, and can put it in its place with their STAB attacks, while hitting hard with Scald. Xatu completely walls Hippopotas thanks to its Magic Bounce ability and immunity to Ground-type moves. Hippopotas is also setup bait for walls and Pokemon which set up entry hazards, such as Mew, Deoxys-D, Blastoise, and Roserade. These Pokemon can shut Hippopotas with Taunt, cripple it with status, or set up entry hazards all day long, while it can't do much back. Toxic using Hippopotas can be a nuisance for the aforementioned Pokemon, but they will get their job done. If Hippopotas lacks Roar, setup sweepers such as Azelf, Mismagius, Venomoth, and Raikou will set up on Hippopotas with impunity.

[Dream World]

Hippopotas gets Sand Force as its Dream World ability. While Sand Force isn't a bad ability by itself, it doesn't help Hippopotas in the slightest. Hippopotas's main job is to set up permanent sandstorm, not to take advantage of it itself, as no other Pokemon is capable of this in the tier.

Suggestions are welcomed. Especially OO, counters and alternate EV spreads. I was thinking about moving EVs from Defense to Special Defense (about 252 / 108 / 148, giving it 340 HP, 360 Def and 236 SpD), but I put 252 / 252 / 4 to start off with.

I'm curious how effective a physical wall Hippopostas can be. It does get instant recovery if nothing else. If it is effective, then certainly Sand Force should get a mention as a way of using Hippopostas without summoning sandstorm. It might be completely outclassed by something like Eviolite Gligar, though (but it won't have 4x weakness to Ice).

Whirlwind is clearly better than Roar isn't it? I think also that Toxic is good enough to get a slash in the main set, probably before Yawn but after Roar. Hippopostas has terrible offense, so Toxic can easily wind up doing more damage than Earthquake.

Ok. But I'm not really sure what you're talking about in the first "paragraph". Do you mean another set or something? If you're going by the name I put on the set, I just couldn't think about anything else but that.

Changes made:
Moved Whirlwind, removed Roar altogether.
Added Toxic.

Whirlwind, IIRC, is a Gen 5 breeding move, so it's illegal with Stealth Rock. You have to either slash it along Stealth Rock, or put Roar again on the third slot.

Also, don't forget Hippopotas can take random Hidden Power Ice from threating stuff like Raikou (your current spread takes 70.3% - 83% from +1 SubCM Raikou, if I'm not mistaken), while being able to phaze away or Earthquake for a decent amount of damage, so investing in Special Defense a bit is a completely legit option.

Toxic >>>>>>>>>> Roar

Every single Pokemon that's going to switch into Hippopotas (bar Roserade and Celebi) absolutely fucking hates Toxic (bulky Waters, Zapdos, Mew, pixies, Taunters like Deo-D). It's so much more useful than Roar.

Mew is a decent counter, has good bulk to take Earthquakes, outspeeds and Taunts Hippo, and can burn it with WoW and set up its own SR.

also, XATU completely blocks hippo from doing anything lol

I mean in the Dream World section, to mention Sand Rush as a way to use Hippopotas as a physical wall without summoning the sand - kinda like Hippowdon's Uber analysis (http://www.smogon.com/forums/showthread.php?t=3454730). The key question is of course whether Hippopotas is a viable physical wall, the answer to which I don't know.

I think in the counters section you could just say how Hippopotas's offensive ability is near zero, so many things can set up on it. For example, Deoxys-D may hate getting Toxic'ed, but it will get down SR + Spikes each time it switches into Hippopotas. Same goes for Roserade. Without Roar, many sweepers will now set up easily, e.g. Sub CM Mismagius, Venomoth, etc. Without Toxic, Pokemon like Blastoise will switch in for free and spread burns with Scald or simply Rapid Spin. Because Hippopotas has such miniscule offense, you don't need to KO it to counter it; you just need to set up on it. I would certainly emphasize the "set up" part.

As far as Toxic vs. Roar I would mention that Roar is the better choice for very offensively inclined teams. This is because there are plenty of things like Mismagius, Celebi, and Zapdos who will set up stat boosts or substitutes and basically rob you of momentum. With Roar, you can basically shuffle until something non-threatening comes out or hippo goes down, allowing you to gain momentum with a revenge-kill and taking the heat off of your offensive mons. Stallish teams probably appreciate the Toxic more, though, since Hippo isn't the greatest phazer out there.

In short, Roar makes it so he doesn't forfeit momentum, which is really important if you're running offense. If you have shit like Cradily and Suicune then you can just wall things and so Toxic is better.

Sorry for the massive delay, wanted to make some further fixes and lost the time to do so, but I only made one (very important) fix anyways. Otherwise...

Thanks for the check.

Implented all but one change, and that's the part in the DW section.

Banedon wanted it mentioned as it was mentioned in Hippowdon's Uber analysis. QC didn't seem to mind either, but I will contact Oglemi about it.

I guess Eviolite + Slack Off is good, but I still don't see why you would use this thing if not to bring sand. As Banedon says later in that post, its offenses are pretty mediocre so who knows if Sand Force would help it even if your opponent uses his own Sand Stream Hippopotas.

Yeah I feel that that last part isn't needed. Go ahead and delete it.

Also don't forget that blue "in" before "the slightest" in the Dream World section too.

Since I re-wrote several parts of the analysis, it will need at least another check to be done.

What is this? Why did you rewrite the whole Overview? That's not necessary imo. I'm going to take this up with Fatecrashers to see what he thinks first. I won't make those changes until then.

For the overview, go with what Calm Pokemaster has, since what he has written is, upon closer examination, not a major overhaul. He did manage to tighten up the prose a bit, removing some repetitive sentence structures, which is good, most of the content however has stayed the same so using it as the new overview shouldn't be an issue.

For checks and counters, Calm Pokemaster is mainly correct. 'Set up on Hippopotas with impunity' is superior to 'no problem doing what they are supposed to do', so use it. 'Toxic can be a nuisance but they will get their job done.' was removed, it shouldn't be, you can still use that line but make it clear that it is Hippopotas who can threaten back with Toxic as a nuisance.
