Dunsparce

[Overview]

If ever you find yourself staring down a Dunsparce, stare in horror and amazement; horror at the mere thought of being flinched to death by the only and the best paraflincher in NU and amazement at the fact that your opponent has the guts to use Dunsparce in a serious NU battle. Dunsparce has a rather decent base 100 HP stat as well as usable defenses, usable attacking stats, and mediocre Speed. This land snake, however, can overcome its, and its team's, Speed troubles via paralysis. It is also bulky enough to support and has a 60% paralysis chance with Body Slam, thanks to Serene Grace. On top of that, it has Glare, to paralyze even Ground-types. Its one flaw may be that it does not have access to Wish, therefore allowing lots of other Pokemon to outclass it as a supporter. Despite all that, however, the Pokemon that is horribly outclassed by Jirachi and Togekiss, finds itself quite a niche in NU.

[SET]
name: Paraflincher
move 1: Thunder Wave
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Coil
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers
ability: Serene Grace
evs: 144 HP / 252 Atk / 36 Def / 76 SpD
nature: Adamant

[SET COMMENTS]

This is the best set Dunsparce can run. It aims to abuse the annoyance of paralysis, and flinching together. When a Dunsparce Rock Slides a paralyzed Pokemon, that Pokemon only has a 30% chance of moving that turn. Thunder Wave is the most reliable paralysis move out there, and while it does not hit Ground-types, you shouldn't be trying to flinch them to death with Rock Slide. Speaking of Rock Slide, that is Dunsparce's best flinching move, as there aren't any Pokemon immune to it. Roost lets you recover HP, and Coil boosts Attack, Defense, and Accuracy, all of which are important when trying to flinch something to death.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Dunsparce can pull off this set in many different ways. If you do not like the prospect of being Taunted, Body Slam is an option to spread paralysis. However, it only works 60% of the time and does not work on Ghosts. Glare is another option, albeit with less accuracy than Thunder Wave, but it can paralyze Ground-types, and after a Coil, the Accuracy doesn't matter. Instead of using Rock Slide, you can use Headbutt to flinch. Headbutt deals more damage as it has STAB and more Base Power, but it does not allow you to flinch Ghosts. Bite can also be used because it hits Ghosts a lot harder, but the lack of power is very unappealing. Finally, Substitute can be used to block paralysis and burn, both of which cripple Dunsparce.

The EVs listed max out Attack while equalizing defenses. However, there are many ways to go about giving EVs to a Dunsparce. Maxing out HP is an option. Since Coil boosts Defense anyway, you may just want to throw your EVs into Special Defense to take Special hits more easily. Alternatively, you may want to invest in Speed so you can actually outspeed other Pokemon without paralyzing them. Dunsparce's main role is providing paralysis support and wearing down the opponent's Pokemon. Very rarely will Dunsparce actually get a KO by itself. Teammates should be strong but slow attackers, such as Zweilous, Rampardos, and Torterra, as they benefit most from paralysis support. It is also suggested to run a Special wall, such as Regice or Lickilicky to sponge the Special hits that Dunsparce doesn't take so well.

[Other Options]

Dunsparce is a cross between "dunce" and "sparce"; it has few viable sets, and the ones that are viable are outclassed by others. Dunsparce can attempt a RestTalk set, but with mediocre bulk, it is better off using Roost. Dunsparce's Charge Beam, which will always boost Special Attack, thanks to Serene Grace, along with its access to BoltBeam, make a SubCharge set seem viable. However, with such a middling Special Attack stat, it is better off parafliching. Another option is to run a Coil set without flinching, but Dunsparce does not have a good physical movepool; its best moves are Body Slam, Aqua Tail, and Bite.

[Checks and Counters]

Dunsparce uses paralysis as its main tool; if it does not outspeed your Pokemon, it can't flinch it. Therefore, you should find a way to circumvent paralysis. One way is to send in a Ground-type, which immediately spells a loss for Dunsparce because even if Dunsparce outspeeds, it will not be damaging your Ground-type with Rock Slide anytime soon. Also, any remotely strong Fighting-type, such as Gurdurr or Machoke, will make quick work of Dunsparce. Since Coil does not boost Special Defense, you can use a powerful special attacker, such as Duosion or Beheeyem, to target Dunsparce's weaker defensive stat. Guts Pokemon, though they can still be flinched after paralysis, appreciate the Attack boost. If all else fails, paralyzing Dunsparce will render it useless for the rest of the match as it will be unable to flinch anything.

[Dream World]

Dunsparce gets Rattled from Dream World. While Rattled boosts Speed when hit by a Dark, Bug, or Ghost attack, Dunsparce does not resist Dark or Bug, and even worse, it is immune to Ghost-type attacks. Rattled also takes away Dunsparce's main use in NU as a paraflincher.

[Overview]
-Best paraflincher in NU.
-HP is decent.
-Access to Roost and ResTalk make it a good bulky attacker.
-Glare allows it to paralyze Ground types.
-No Wish? WTH GameFreak?

[SET]
name: Paraflincher
move 1: Thunder Wave
move 2: Rock Slide
move 3: Coil
move 4: Roost
item: Leftovers
ability: Serene Grace
evs: 144 HP / 252 Atk / 36 Def / 76 SpD
nature: Adamant

[SET COMMENTS]

-Thunder Wave paralyzes all non-Ground types.
-Rock Slide flinches everything.
-Roost is your best recovery.
-Coil allows you to actually deal damage on stuff not 4x weak to Rock.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

-Body Slam is a Taunt-proof paralysis method, but it only works 60% of the time.
-Glare paralyzes Ground-types.
-Headbutt is STAB flinching, but then you get walled by Ghosts.
-Substitute can be used to block status.
-EVs max out Attack while equalizing defenses.
-Good luck actually taking something down with this.
-Teammates should benefit from paralysis.
-Try using a special wall such as Regice or Lickilicky to sponge Special hits.

[Other Options]

-ResTalk
-Specially defensive
-SubCharge
-Coil

[Checks and Counters]

-Quick Feet Pokemon troll Dunsparce.
-Fighting types.
-Guts Pokemon. (Gurdurr says hi.)

[Dream World]

-Gets Rattled.
-You don't resist Dark, Bug, or Ghost.
-Serene Grace is infinitely better.

First set should really be 252 attack adamant. Otherwise you're just going to run out of PP 35hkoing shit with Dunsparce's low base 70 attack. No real reason to run max defense either considering the point of the set is to prevent the opponent from hitting you.

All of the paralyzing moves should be slashed in the same slot, there's little reason to use two on the same set. Also the second set doesn't sound very good, 65 base SpA with no STAB doesn't sound worth it when there are better Sub/Charge users available in NU like Rotom-S. The 100% chance to increase SpA doesn't sound like enough of a perk.

Personally for paraflincher I prefer this:

Dunsparce (M) @ Leftovers
Trait: Serene Grace
EVs: 252 HP / 4 Atk / 252 SpDef
Careful Nature (+SpDef, -SpAtk)
- Body Slam/Thunder Wave
- Rock Slide
- Roost
- Coil

Thunder Wave/Body Slam to paralyze, Roost until they get fully paralyzed, Coil so you can actually put out some damage while Paraflinching. Rock Slide>Headbutt to hit Ghosts

if i remember correctly a spread of 144 HP / 252 Atk / 36 Def / 76 SpD is slightly more bulky overall, it equalizes dunsparces defenses, while being slightly physically bulkier than 252 hp, while slightly less specially bulky (yeah i know) but the bulk it gains on the physical side outweighs the bulk it loses iirc.

feel free to use this spread, if 252 hp does turn out to be better, ignore this

It hits Ghosts a lot harder than Aqua Tail or Rock Slide and has a 60% flinch rate. You can't do much to Rock- and Steel-types without a lot of boosts, but unless they carry Toxic they are just set-up bait. Aqua Tail is probably better, but Bite at least deserves a mention.

Why no mention of Headbutt? Its a lot stronger than Rock Slide because of STAB, provides great neutral coverage, and the flinch move is the one you'll be spamming anyways :/

OK, I'll keep it slashed

Mono-Attackers never run a Normal attack as there only attack. (Or, for that matter, Fighting, Psychic, Poison, or Electric.) There are Pokemon that are immune to it.

mono-attacker dunsparce wins against misdreavus. feel free to run headbutt; you'll stall out misdreavus of PP before it stalls you out (rest). golem is useless vs. you (without roar at least) and probo is the same.

Get rid of the Coil set imo, just stick with Paraflinching. If I'm going to use a Coil mon I'd use Arbok or Eelektross or Serperior.

On the paraflinch set, clean up those slashes. Which is better, Body Slam / Rock Slide or Glare / Headbutt? If it's the former, deslash Thunder Wave, Glare, and Headbutt and say in AC "You can use Glare and Headbutt for a more reliable paralysis move at the cost of not being able to damage Ghost-types, but are able to Paralyze them."

maybe AC substitute? after you paralyze something you can fish for a full para and be harder to KO with that cushion there, it also blocks status for dunsparce, despite being slow you should be paralyzing something before you send dunsparce in making the speed issue irrelavent

@ tennisace: Took out Coil and put the slashed stuff all in AC with only T-Wave and Rock Slide left.

@ MoltenKyurem: Put in AC.

Why does it say "Quick Feet Pokémon troll Dunsparce"?

That's just not true. Quick Feet does not activate when paralyzed, so you need to remove that part.

Quick feet does activate with paralysis, but doesn't prevent the chance of being fully paralyzed iirc.
