[Overview]

Deoxys has great offensive stats, but suffers from being the middle child of Deoxys-A and Deoxys-S, often struggling to not be outclassed by either one of the two. However, with its slight advantage in bulk over the frail Deoxys-A, this fallen comet manages to carve itself a niche (albeit a tiny and mostly useless one) as an offensive dual screens user.

[SET]
name: Offensive Dual Screens
move 1: Light Screen
move 2: Reflect
move 3: Psycho Boost / Ice Beam
move 4: Low Kick / Fire Punch
item: Light Clay
nature: Naive
evs: 28 HP / 48 Atk / 252 Def / 180 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Sporting double the base defensive stats of Carvanha, Deoxys can semi-reliably set up dual screens for its team. Unlike Deoxys-A, Deoxys can actually survive certain attacks, making it a decent offensive dual screens user.

Light Screen and Reflect are fairly self-explanatory, providing a setup window for your sweepers. Psycho Boost is Deoxys's strongest STAB option, doing moderate damage to anything without huge Special Defense or a resistance to the attack. Ice Beam can be used to hit Grass-, Ground-, and Dragon-types super effectively without lowering Deoxys's Special Attack, but a neutral STAB Psycho Boost actually does more damage on the first use. Low Kick is the primary option for the last slot, threatening Tyranitar, Steel and Normal Arceus, Dialga, Excadrill, Ferrothorn, and Chansey and Blissey. Fire Punch can be used in the same slot to OHKO Ferrothorn and bring Forretress down to 1 HP.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

The HP and Defense EVs ensure that Life Orb Extreme Killer Arceus can't OHKO Deoxys with ExtremeSpeed, while the Attack EVs allow it to retaliate with an almost assured 2HKO from Low Kick. The Speed EVs allow Deoxys to outpace all neutral natured Choice Scarf users with a base Speed of 90 or below. The remaining 8 EVs are dumped into Special Attack to provide a bit of a kick to Psycho Boost and Ice Beam.

Grass Knot is an option over Psycho Boost or Ice Beam to smack Kyogre and Groudon really hard. Thunder still hits Kyogre for super effective damage, and has an added bonus of Lugia and Ho-Oh being susceptible to it as well. However, its unreliability outside of rain and this set's dedication to the lead slot make this an inferior option most of the time. Shadow Ball prevents Mewtwo from setting up, but is fairly useless outside of that.

Deoxys appreciates teammates that can take advantage of the screens it provides to set up and threaten the opposing team. Rock Polish + Swords Dance Groudon, Dragon Dance Rayquaza, and Extreme Killer Arceus are all examples of such Pokemon.

[Other Options]

Deoxys has a great movepool, but all of its choices will leave it outclassed by its alternate formes. It has access to both Spikes and Stealth Rock, Magic Coat, ExtremeSpeed, and Taunt, all of which are useful, but unfortunately have as little a reason to be used as Deoxys itself.

[Checks and Counters]

Giratina-O's Shadow Sneak will 2HKO Deoxys, even if the second one is cushioned by Reflect, allowing it to only get one screen up or attack. Extreme Killer Arceus is 2HKOed by Deoxys, but ExtremeSpeed will 2HKO Deoxys back. Ghost Arceus can take anything Deoxys throws at it and set up Calm Minds, using Recover when necessary. Jirachi walls sets without Fire Punch and can paralyze Deoxys, then take it out with Iron Head. Ho-Oh and specially defensive Giratina also wall this set, but cannot stop Deoxys from setting up both screens. Metagross and Scizor are only hit super effectively by Fire Punch, and have powerful STAB moves and priority to take out Deoxys. Any Choice Scarf user with more than 279 Speed can swiftly knock Deoxys out with a STAB or super effective move before it has a chance to set up screens.

Can we bring this down to OU so we can legitimately remove Deoxys-N's Ubers analysis.

So yeah, sorry for the double post, but here's something that vaguely has a niche.

name: Useless
move 1: Ice Beam / Shadow Ball
move 2: Thunder
move 3: Superpower / ExtremeSpeed
move 4: Psycho Boost / ExtremeSpeed / Stealth Rock
item: Expert Belt / Psychic Gem / Focus Sash
nature: Naive
evs: 72 HP / 4 Def / 252 SpA / 180 Spe

So yeah, this is probably the only thing Deo-N has that could represent his best chance in Ubers. At the very least, this Deoxys-N can survive an ExtremeSpeed from Jolly Rayquaza (with LO), as well a Bullet Punch from standard Ubers Scizor, assuming both are unboosted, of course. So yeah, unlike Deo-A, Deo-N can take SOME form of priority. You'd probably just lead with this, attack as much shit as possible and die, before you get a chance to take SR damage, since Ray would be able to revenge you with it =(. The Speed EVs let you outspeed Modest ScarfOgre. 72 HP EVs is the minimum for you to take a Jolly Ray ES.

So yeah:
Pros over Deo-A: Can survive a couple of priority moves (barely)
Cons: It's fucking Deo-N
Pros over Deo-S: Stronger
Cons: It's fucking Deo-N

I want Spikes somewhere over there. Also why is Thunder a main slash? Paycho Boost hits a TON harder.

Great Sage

Banned deucer.
Deoxys-A still does that set better. With EVs of 72 HP / 244 Def / 12 SpA / 180 Spe and Naive, Deoxys-A gets the exact same stats, except it trades 54 points of Special Defense for 60 points of Attack, and Special Defense is irrelevant anyway here. The only way for Deoxys to have a niche over Deoxys-A is to have both of its defenses be relevant; this probably means substantially more defensive investment than you have now.

why would you want spikes ? Its not supposed to set up at all, just lead kill some shit while surviving some priority then die. If you even manage to set up sr, you,re p lucky. Psycho boost is slashed since i assume, it leaves deo n crippled. I think, you're not getting that this set is just meant to lead, kill shit and die. If you want a hit and run mon use deo a. Still at least this set can at least be justified to have a set :/

I think we should hold it a bit until Cherub's Species Clause thing comes to a decision. Until then, I'll think of something this (BAN ME PLEASE) can do.

@ rayquaza, Ehhh deo-n was iffy from the start really, it lost all support when great sage made a deo-a that actually retained its physical bulk, with higher special attack at the price of special bulk, which really doesn't make a difference unless your comparing which Mon can take more volt switches from forry (both get ohkoed by basically every special attack, exception is lugia ice beam, but even deo-a avoids ohko from that).

Only niche I can really think of is offensive dual screens since unlike deo-s it actually has decent offenses and its small defense advantage becomes noteworthy when compared to deo-a (difference is amplified due to screens). But then there's competition with latios and genesect but it has higher speed so... But seriously not being able to outspeed + nature scarfed base 90s suck. I'm also not sure if it could do something like trick scarf deo-s like last gen but its sooooooo much more fragile...

Also I just realized ariados outclasses this set lol.

EDIT: Maybe this can work its reaaaaaly niche but... ITS DEO-N WHAT DO YOU EXPECT, but since its so niche I'm fine if this gets rejected too.

name: Useless Dual Screens

move 4: Focus Blast / Hidden Power Fire / Stealth Rock / Thunder
item: Light Clay
nature: Timid
evs: 252 HP / 20 Def / 48 SpD / 180 Spe

It has enough offensive presence to do stuff like prevent Exkiller from setting up on you while you setup your screens (Focus Blast 2HKOes while Espeed doesn't OHKO), and it can whack things with that Psycho Boost, its Special Defense investment is amplified so you can actually take some hits like Modest Scarf Draco Meteors (assuming base special attack of Dialga or 150) after a Light Screen, and you have a chance to live Scarfkia Spacial Rend without Screen (yay?), its not outclassed by deo-s due to higher attack but deo-a can't do this due to lower defense, it only faces competition from Latios and Genesect but its faster then them so.... oh and its the only one of them that can set up rocks lol, can also check Mewtwo (lolwut) since it outspeeds and can setup a screen in its face but deo-s can do that too...

Also not really sure if this spread is efficient but idk how mechanics work for base 50 hp mons.

That set is outclassed by Deoxys-S with Modest 168 HP / 252 SpA / 92 Spe. Deoxys-S would have 19 fewer Special Attack, but has far better defenses. Try sticking Superpower on there somewhere if you want to salvage the set.

Err I guess you could go naive or hasty and use superpower, with 48 attack evs deo-a gets the ability to 2hko exkiller, but the problem is with the weakened defense your now in ohko range for espeed from ekiller and you can't beat it, also lol the 19 attack matters for 2hkoing with focus miss but idk. Naive also means that those ohkoes avoided are back, but you can run fire punch now and thunder still wrecks ogre so... Psycho boost with superpower also has a decent chance of 2hkoing...

Nothing should be slashed over Superpower / Fire Punch. This set must have a physical move, or it is outclassed by Deoxys-S.

Ok, can Deo-N just get Deo-A's set, have a line saying that it's heavily inferior, and leave it at that? It doesn't necessarily have to be specifically un-outclassed as long as it's "good", using dpp UU logic, especially if we're using it to fill a nonexistent niche (or, at least, nonexistent by my uninformed eye).

Great Sage

Banned deucer.
No. The reason that Deoxys must have its own, un-outclassed niche is that using Deoxys prevents you from using any other forme due to species clause. If you are using an outclassed Deoxys set, you should use Deoxys-A or Deoxys-S instead, since species clause prevents you from doubling up.

That set is missing 8 EVs (like it matters). To be honest, the only real reason to use Deoxys-N is for trolling.

I am approving this set as well. Grass Knot mention to deal massive damage to Groudon and frailer Kyogre versions. Shadow Ball hits Mewtwo hard. You can come in on Mewtwo's Calm Mind/Psytrike, set up Light Screen and Shadow Ball it I guess. Thunder is worth mentioning too. Superpower should still be main option because it OHKOes Tyranitar, Excadrill and makes Ferrothorn sad.

ah, sorry about this but after discussing some of the aspects of this analysis with superimp i have decided i am going to have to change the set slightly.

rest assured, the large part of your check is much appreciated and will still be largely relevant post-modification.

however, for the time being no one post anymore GP checks until i rewrite a bit of this.
