Introduction

Collecting items is a fundamental part of playing Pokemon. In most cases, collecting an item is as simple as finding it on the ground and picking it up. It isn't always this easy, however, as there are many items that are hidden from view. These items will often get overlooked unless you either have prior knowledge of the item or just happen to use an item-locating device in the right location. This guide will show you where you can find every hidden item in Pokemon Red, Blue, and Yellow.

The Itemfinder

The Itemfinder is a key item that allows you to detect nearby hidden items. If you are following this guide, then you probably won't need to use the Itemfinder to find the majority of the items, but it can still be helpful for certain areas, such as the Underground Paths and the Cycling Road, where the items tend to lack clear reference points for pinpointing them. The Itemfinder can even be used to confirm that you have already collected an item if you begin using this guide partway through the game.

To get the Itemfinder, head over to the gate east of Vermilion City and talk to Professor Oak's aide upstairs. If you have caught 30 Pokemon, he'll give you the Itemfinder as a reward. The RBY Itemfinder is not able to pinpoint hidden items; however, it will make a sound if there is a hidden item on the screen somewhere. Once the Itemfinder does its work, you'll have to search for the exact location of the item yourself.

Hidden Items

Note that the items are listed in a rough order based on when players can access them. As anyone who has played the 1st generation games will tell you, the games tend to become less linear as you progress, especially compared to the later generations. This means that some items listed further down in this guide might be obtained before items listed above them, depending on what order you prefer to complete each task. Therefore, don't feel obliged to follow the order of this guide exactly if you prefer to do things in a different order to what is presented here.

Viridian City

Potion: As you are heading north out of the city, check the Cuttable bush just to the left of the exit for a Potion. If you have not made enough progress to get past the old man, this item can be obtained by entering the narrow passage just above the western exit of Viridian City, which places you on the other side of the bush.

Viridian Forest

Antidote: As you are entering the forest from the south, you'll see a large tree in the middle of the path next to a Bug Catcher. There is an Antidote hidden in the lower-left section of the large tree.

Potion: Just before the northern exit of Viridian Forest, you'll come across one last Bug Catcher. Check the tile right in front of him for a Potion.

Mt. Moon

Ether: Go down the second ladder you come to after entering the mountain; you'll eventually reach a room with a Team Rocket Grunt and a platform with TM01. Just to the right of the platform is an isolated rock that will yield an Ether if inspected.

WIP, because I need to go over my descriptions again to make sure they're as clear as they can be.

If you notice any items I've missed, post in this thread.

Debating whether to include a short section on the Itemfinder, but I'm leaving it out for now.

you know, it should be a simple matter for someone containing any of RBY (Or maybe their remakes) to just follow your descriptions and then see if they reach the areas, as long as they have beaten the E4 and have a strong enough team. Even if they've already gotten the items, they just need to know how to get to the area where it used to be, and where exactly to click A.

So that might help, or it might be too much work.

I seem to recall from ages of playing this game a hidden Mega Punch TM. Am i right about this being hidden and it not being in your guide? And if so, maybe there are others you've missed? Just a thought (More like 2)

You say "item-locating device", why not just say Itemfinder? It's a general term but what else are you referring to? And that solves the Itemfinder section. Maybe just say 'If you still have trouble with what exactly I'm referring to, you can use the Itemfinder to scout around the area, and in case you already picked up the item and forgot about it, you can even use it to make sure you got the item already. That second part is a little unnecessary but a possible good point. Or maybe just something like:

Through all this, don't forget that(Either This: As long as you have the itemfinder)(Maybe like:As long as you have caught X pokemon and talked to the Prof's aide (Double maybe:Mention where he is), you can always use it(Or this:the Itemfinder, instead of IT if you're not using the first part) to make things easier.

There's a TM01 (Mega Punch) in Mt Moon but it isn't hidden. I don't know of any hidden TM01 in RBY and I can't find any other sources that list that either.

The introduction is discussing item hunting in general (i.e. in all generations), and I used "item-locating device" because the Itemfinder was replaced with the Dowsing Machine in later generations. A general term seemed more accurate. However, I do like your suggested ammendments since that would allow me to introduce the Itemfinder without having a specific section for it. If I decide to include it I'll probably use your idea.

I would include a section on the Itemfinder. While this guide is really helpful and kills most reasons to use the Itemfinder, it would be nice to acknowledge how some of the data probably came about, and how it can be used to find literally everything hidden in the game due to its usefulness.

Added an Itemfinder section. I was originally going to incorporate it into the Introduction but I think the way I have it now works better.

Shouldn't it be Key Item?

I'd say If over whether, and take out 'for pinpointing them'

otherwise looks good.

According to the Spelling and Grammar Standards thread, "item" is never capitalized (except when it's used in "Item Clause"). I guess I'll change it to "key item".

The American spelling of "centre" is "center"; other than that, the only issues were the spacing, capitalization, and lack of accented e's in some specific scenarios.

Ok, I think I got everything. Thanks for the check.

I changed Prof. to Professor and Rocket Grunt to Team Rocket Grunt. For the record, the grunts are simply called "Rocket" in battle, but listing them as that here looked stupid.

Oh, and:

There is a hidden Rare Candy sitting in the backyard, on the right side of the it.
Obviously I put this as "of it."

One more check to go.

Hidden Items in RBY

Mt. Moon
