Fortress Bastion vs. Leethoof in the ASB Arena! (reffed by Flamestrike)

Brandon sat in the stands of the ASB Arena, waiting for a match to start. Bastion and Leethoof had invited him to watch them train, and he had accepted, always willing to watch a good fight. Beside him sat his Embirch, Cannonstrike, who was shooting small flames out of his arm cannons, seemingly practicing. "Hey, cut that out for now," Brandon scolded him. While training was good and all, the last thing he needed was for one of his Pokemon to set the arena on fire. "We'll train after the match, okay? In the meantime let's just watch and see what we can learn." The Embirch nodded, slightly put out, but still turned to focus on the match. In the arena, Bastion and Leethoof were already preparing. Bastion was still new to ASB, but he had been spectating for a while and was already a decent battler, while Leethoof was a veteran and a Gym Leader who had proven his skills many times already. It would be a good match. Brandon double-checked the rules again quickly.

Bastion was the first to reveal his Pokemon, Whisp the Gastly. While Bastion hadn't been around long enough to truly establish a signature Pokemon yet, but this was probably as close as he had. It was definitely going to give Leethoof a rough time.

Gastly (Whisp) ♂
Nature: Timid (+15% Speed, +29% Accuracy, -1 Atk)
Type - Ghost/Poison
Ghost Type - Ghost STAB; brief intangibility that nullifies Normal and Fighting-type attacks. Can move through walls for a brief period of time but must remain in motion. Superior senses in low light and inside dark buildings. Have no vision reduction in hazes.
Poison Type - Poison STAB; immunity to Poison/Toxic, see and breathe through smog/smokescreens/haze uninhibited - Ignore Fog's accuracy reduction. Able to use Wrap and Bind without losing focus. Superior senses in urban settings.

Abilities:
Levitate - This Pokemon naturally floats above the earth when released or easily takes flight, evading the Ground moves Bulldoze, Earthquake, Fissure, and Magnitude. Earth Power will have three (3) less Base Attack Power. Dig and Dive can strike a Levitating Pokemon if their user is over Size Class 4, has Levitate, is 3.5m or larger, or is a Flying-type. Otherwise Dig and Dive will miss. Ground moves can still hit.

On the other side of the arena, Leethoof had released Andre the Tepig. Normally Leet was known for his Rock types, evidenced by his status as the Rock type Gym Leader, but he occasionally branched out into other types. It would be interesting to see how Leethoof used a Pokemon that wasn't the type he was used to using, however.

Tepig (Andre) (M)
Nature: Serious (No change to stats)

Type: Fire
Water: Fire STAB; immune to burn, emit a low glow in dark places, takes additional damage if active open flames are exposed to a water attack. Superior senses in volcanic or bushfire areas.

Abilities:
Blaze: (Innate) When this Pokemon’s HP is lower than 33%, the base damage of any fire attack is increased by two (2). (eg Flamethrower goes from 10 to 12, Fire Blast from 12 to 14)
Thick Fat (DW Locked): (Innate) This Pokemon has a great deal of extra fat or muscle that increases its resistance to extreme heat or extreme cold, reducing the type effectiveness of Fire- and Ice-typed attacks to the next level of resistance (2x weak becomes neutral, neutral becomes resistance, etc.)

With both Pokemon on the field, Leethoof seemed to be just about ready to give his orders and get things started. Brandon turned to Cannonstrike and asked, "So, who do you think has the edge?" However, Cannonstrike was ignoring his trainer, instead eyeing the Tepig and taking careful aim with his cannon. "HEY!" Brandon shouted at his Embirch, who immediately dropped his cannon and turned to face Brandon, "You're not allowed to attack the Pokemon when you're watching! I told you, we'll have some training later, for now just watch and learn!" The Embirch acquiesced, if a bit grumpily, and the two prepared to watch the match.

Not long after Brandon and Cannonstrike turned to watch the action, it began in earnest. Well, sort of. Whisp started things off, using psychic energy to lull Andre into a light sleep with a Hypnosis! As Andre slept through his action, Brandon mused, "Interesting way to start the match, let's see how he follows up."

He didn't wait long to find out, as Whisp prolonged Andre's suffering with a Nightmare! Instead of waking up like he was going to, Andre slept yet again, now wracked with pain as he fought off imaginary horrors in his dreams. "Hmm," Brandon thought to himself, "not sure if that was the best way to go about that. Still, it did stop Leethoof from getting an extra attack in and did a bit of damage, so it's something."

Finally, Whisp changed tactics and blanketed the battlefield with a Smog! Both Pokemon were enveloped, and while Andre was badly poisoned by the toxic fog, thanks to his Poison typing Whisp was unscathed. However, Andre finally woke up, and despite the smog was able to find his target with a Flame Charge! The effort evened out the HP numbers and boosted Andre's Speed as well! "Well, so far things are pretty even. It'll be interesting to see if someone can pull ah-" Before he could finish the thought, he was interrupted as a small gout of flame flew past his face, seemingly aimed at a bug to the left of him. "Okay Cannonstrike, that's enough, back into the Pokeball you go!" Before the Embirch could protest, he was back into the Pokeball in a red flash. Brandon sighed. "So much for that idea..."

Toxic Fog for 2 actions

Brandon now sat with his Chimchar, Apestrike. However, Apestrike was a bit restless, and so Brandon found himself doubling as Apestrike's perch for the match, as the Chimchar had found his way to the top of Brandon's head. "At least we won't burn the stadium down this way," Brandon thought to himself as the round began. Whisp, satisfied with the amount of status he had inflicted on Andre, started to go on the offensive, nailing Andre with a Venoshock! Intensifying the toxins within Andre's body, it hit incredibly hard for a neutral attack. Still having difficultly finding Whisp in the toxic fog, nonetheless Andre fired off an Ember in response, and through either luck or skill managed to hit the Gastly! "Still going to need to take a bit more than an Ember to keep up with those Venoshocks though, especially since the Toxic damage is also going to build up..." Brandon thought to himself.

Switching it up, Whisp followed up his Venoshock with a Shadow Ball! Not quite as devastating as the Venoshock, but still appropriately painful! Andre switched up the offense as well, going for a Flame Charge to take his revenge! Amazingly, despite the fog he hit yet again, and to make things better the fog finally dissipated! However, while the Flame Charge did boost Andre's Speed, it still wasn't doing as much damage as Whisp's attacks, and the poison continued to eat away as well.

Andre, suddenly finding himself faster, opted to go back to his Ember attack, but while it was almost effortless to pull off, the damage remained disappointing, especially compared to the damage he took in return from Whisp's Venoshock! "Andre is falling behind, and fast," Brandon mused. "Leet is going to have to do something, and fast, or Bastion will run away with this one." Apestrike responded happily, and the two settled in to watch what could very well be the final round.

Brandon and Apestrike watched intently as the two Pokemon got back to fighting. Still faster, Andre immediately launched into a Flame Charge, hitting Whisp for decent damage and boosting his Speed. But Whisp fired back with another Venoshock, and with the toxins having intensified yet again, things weren't looking good for the Tepig.

Still, you couldn't call the little guy a quitter; he would fight until he couldn't fight anymore. As Blaze activated, he countered with another Flame Charge, doing slightly more damage than before. But Whisp was still doing okay, and a retaliatory Shadow Ball took Andre to the brink.

Andre wouldn't give up. Barely able to stand, he gave Whisp a defiant look before firing one more Flame Charge at the Gastly. Whisp took the blow, fluttered momentarily, and then recovered, firing off a final Venoshock that knocked out Andre. Leethoof recalled his Tepig, thanking it for a solid effort, while Bastion congratulated his Gastly on his victory. Brandon thanked the two for the excellent battle, Apestrike now napping on the top of his head, and the three left for new adventures.

Congratulations Fortress Bastion!
