Iron Man (No Spoilers)

Marvel's latest comic based action movie came out this weekend, and I had to see it for myself on Friday evening. I'd seen the trailers, and to be perfectly honest, the production looked kind of cheesy/lame. My skepticism vanished in the first fifteen minutes.

Iron Man destroyed my expectations for what superhero movies should be. It raised the bar so high that I'm almost afraid that I will be disappointed with The Dark Knight because my standards have increased so dramatically. That standard was last set for me at Batman Begins, which I felt was one of the most well organized, plot-driven, comic/cartoon-based movies in recent memory.

So, what is it that made Iron Man so, well, amazing?

First of all, the plot shifts quite fluidly, despite being a two hour movie. There wasn't a single instant through the duration of the viewing that I was bored; on the contrary, I don't remember a point at which I wasn't on the edge of my seat. There isn't a really groundbreaking twist or anything like that though, but I really didn't expect one.

Secondly, the CG effects were excellent, and not abused or overused. I had trouble distinguishing instances where Robert Downey Jr. was in a real suit or when it was a CG scene. This gave off the feel that the Iron Man world could overlap reality, which was pleasurably surreal.

Finally, the Actors/Actress themselves were incredible. RDJ is utterly insane; he IS Tony Stark. Being able to pull off 'serious superhero saves the world' and 'funny superhero who saves the audience from falling asleep' together cohesively was ultra impressive. Gwyneth Paltrow plays Pepper Pots quite well, and the Pepper/Tony relationship doesn't develop the way you hope/expect, which I thought was a great way to make room for a sequel, which, if you wait for the final short scene after the credits are done rolling, seems very likely. Jeff Bridges does Obadiah Stane alright, but I've never been able to get used to him in other acting parts since he starred in The Big Lebowski. Lastly, the oblig Stan Lee cameo was priceless and well placed.

I would give this movie a perfect score, except I think that from the perspective of someone who doesn't know anything about the Marvel universe, I would lose some of the epic, so I give it a 9.5 out of 10. Still, go see it. It's well worth it.

Awesome review. I'll be sure to go see it after AP exams wash over. I'm sure I'll hear alot about it at school tomorrow too.

I agree, it was great. Iron Man's my favourite superhero. There wasn't THAT much action, but I still liked more than the rest of the superhero movies they released.

Easily the best movie so far this year.

Great Things imo:
-Seting up Warmachine via suit easter egg and character dialouge
-Starks helper robots are awesome and deserve their own movie.
-Ending lines -> Credits had me and about a dozen other people Air Guitaring.

I have to agree with VampDude, the placement of "Iron Man" by Black Sabbath was amazing. I started to realize that the movie was almost over and thought okay, it's going to be in the end credits. I was right, but how they did it was amazing.

The secret scene was nice, but I'm getting tired of seeing Samuel L. Jackson playing serious black dude over and over.

However, the best part of the movie is the first half, while Tony Stark is making the first proto-type suit. The way the blended Afghanistan (I'm guessing, but it seems to be the most appropriate) with a Marvel Superhero was amazing. The movie loses some of its flavor after this when it becomes a classic superhero vs. super villain showdown, but its still good.

I would also like to recommend the soundtrack, or at least the one song called "Riding with the Roof Down" that plays whenever Tony Stark is putting on the Iron Man suit.

Samuel L. Jackson was the model for Nick Fury in the old Ultimates universe, which is why us comic book geeks are psyched that he actually gets to be the character that his features represented in the comics.

I saw it on Friday, and yes, it is one of the best movies I've ever seen! The way the movie developed the plot of a superhero was done better than any superhero movie I have ever seen! I will say that there was less action than I expected, because the action scenes were impressive and quite incredible! I would of loved to see more of them, but here's hoping that the sequel will deliver more of that.

When I was in the theater, the crowd cheered as soon as the "iron man" song came on. Unfortunately, I didn't know about the scene after the credits, so I didn't get to see it. I think it would of been awesome if they played that song right when they revealed Iron Man to the terrorists in Afghanistan after his red/yellow suit was painted. That just would of been amazing timing!

Anyway, wonderful movie, and it's no surprise that is had the 2nd highest debut weekend for a non-sequel movie of all time!

wow, that good huh? i wasnt expecting it to be bad, but i CERTAINLY wasnt expecting near universal praise

I am pretty excited for this too, though I gotta admit Iron Man wasn't ever one of my favorite superheroes. But, oh man, Samuel L. Jackson as Nick fury :geekasm:

and also the tank scene at the trailer, seriously. it's so ridiculously badass it hurts

Holy shit this movie was awesome. In terms of comic book movies, it's right up there with Sin City and Batman Begins.

I also feel it's important to note that I've never read a single comic book in my life, and had no idea what the fuck Iron Man was before watching the movie.

Yeah, I never cared about iron man before this movie. I just thought he was some weird red guy.

I could stand without the scene when they yanked the wire out of his chest.

I liked it, it was better of what i expected, there are no lame fights for no reason and overall it was a fun experience. Awesome movie.

I won't say much because it would have to do with the plot (which there are things that are good and others just "ok").

The only thing i will say is -> (spoilers) Nick Fury at the end, basically telling us there is going to be a sequel with Avengers and also War Machine, yeaaah! =D.

I didn't know shit about Iron Man before this movie and now I want to read the books. It was a great movie. Not much action, but that was fine. I actually preferred it this way. Hell, I didn't really even like the actual fight scene near the end compared to the rest of the movie.

I really liked SPOILERS how Tony Stark reveals he's Iron Man. I'm tired of the secret identity crap and this is REALLY refreshing. I'm hoping they don't go with the "oh, it's just Stark being dumb" thing for the next movie and have people not believe it. According to what I've heard, the comics actually do have him as without a secret identity. Well, at the beginning Iron Man is his "bodyguard" but eventually people find out or something. I've been watching a lot of super hero movies lately it seems, all of them keep making me want to read the comics!

I swear to god they better not fuck up the sequel/tie in movies.

Yeah, they actually have a bunch of stuff lined up. Iron Man 2 is in 2010. They have a Thor movie in a year or two. Captain America: The First Avenger should be next year or maybe the year after? And then they actually have an Avengers movie lined up for 2011 which will involve all these guys. Also rumours are there's an Ant-Man movie in the works.

I saw this the opening day and I have to say it was pretty awesome :D I didn't really know much Iron Man before so even for someone who doesn't get an orgasm by seeing the Nick Fury scene, the movie was great :D

Just saw it today and I loved it. Only complaint is that the paralyzing thing that the bad guy had seemed to come out of nowhere.

RE: Firestorm

SPOILERS Yea, In the comics Iron Man WAS Tony's bodyguard in order to protect his identity. But this was because every other comic character at the time had a secret identity, and the writers couldn't come up with a better way to hide Stark's identity. Even they thought it was stupid, so they dropped it as soon as they could. I like how they make fun of how stupid the idea is at the end though :)

This movies looks pretty awesome, ever since I saw the trailer on the Transformers DVD. That was significantly better than the ones on TV

The movie is awesome IMO, and I defini about the CGI, but you don't actually see the classic red and gold suit until over an hour into the movie, and the main "bad guy" isn't really introduced until late on. Basically, I think in terms of the whole plot, the beginning was a bit slow. If the sequel is of the same calibre though, it will be insane.
