The best possible Pokemon is one that is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and takes 1 HP damage from everything, while also learning every possible HM, healing itself automatically, and having some neat ability to top it off. Such a Pokemon doesn't exist, of course, but this means that Pokemon closer to this ideal are the best ones possible.

The goal of this in-game tier list is to recommend a select group of Pokemon for an efficient run through of the game. Those will be put in High tier. Very inefficient Pokemon will be put in Low. Things that are neither efficient nor inefficient, for example Pokemon that have some opportunity cost but end up as good as High ones, will be put in the Middle.

Resources are available, but come with the cost of not being able to give it to other Pokemon. Giving Super Potions is fine because you can buy them and you have almost infinite money in the game. Giving a Pokemon a TM like the Dig in RBY cannot simply be assumed as there is likely lots of competition for it. The less competition there is for a TM, the more likely it is that the Pokemon in question can get said TM. A purchasable TM can always be assumed, of course.

Don't confuse an efficient run with a speed run. Speed runs are often segmented and recorded runs with luck manipulation through resets, and aim for the absolute fastest time, but the real time spent on them is usually much, much more. Just assume you want to play through in a relatively low time frame.

Team size is actually by far most efficient if you use one member, but I'm assuming something more like 3 members as otherwise you get extremely centralized lists with starters and early-game Pokemon at the far top and everything else is pretty much too crappy to bother with.

The tiers for Colosseum and Pokemon XD are based on the following:

-Availability: Can you get them early on and are they easy to get?
-Stats: Do they have a usable stat distribution?
-Moves: Do they have a good movepool that needs little TM support? (By that I mean hard to replace TMs such as ones you get from gyms.)
-Power: Are they strong enough to sweep through enemies without taking too much damage in return?
-Type: Do they have useful STABs and resistances?
-Match-ups: Do they fare well in boss battles?

The Pokemon are ranked in alphabetical particular order.

Availability: Early
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments:
It comes early, has a great typing, great STAB, and comes at a level higher than the rest of your Pokemon at the time. You also get the Flamethrower TM shortly after evolving from the S.S. Libra, turning Houndoom into real powerhouse.

Additional Comments:
It comes mid-game and is a bit under-leveled, but it's very easy to level up through Mt. Battle, comes with perfect coverage, and is very, very powerful. However, it requires you to capture a Trapinch from the Poké Spots, which can end up being very time consuming.

Stats: Uber Strong
Availability: You get it right before the final boss battle.
Movepool: Very Wide
Additional Comments:
Comes very late, but is very sturdy and extremely useful in the final battle to wear down and take hits from Shadow Pokemon. However, it requires you to either lose the following battle and then go to the box and rebattle the boss since there is no break in between, or enter the battle versus Greevil with only 5 Pokemon.

For XD:

Where is (Shadow) Electabuzz? His utility in the final battle with shadow half is absolutely amazing, if lugia and mence are high, he definitely deserves to be high too.

Hypno deserves to be at least mid. I used him as a wall for shadow moves very effectively from Gorigan to Eldes both times I played through XD.

You get Larvitar from a Pokespot, I don't see how that's "Late". Heck, you're whole idea of "Late" is flawed. It should be around Cypher Key Lair that "Late" starts, everything before that is Early and Midgame.

True.

Tangela is helpful, it can use Sleep Powder on the myrad of Shadow pokemon that come after it.

Yeah, but that's really all its good for. It's slow and its weak Sp Def. means it can't take any Special attacks really. Late game its stats are subpar, much more so then the rest of your team.

So Lugia is High, and the pokemon in the fight IMMIDIATLY following are Low? No.

TBH, while they are all very good, the fight vs. Greevil is THE last major fight in the game, and at least Lugia can be used against Greevil. (In fact, it is almost necessary to weather hits so you can catch his SHadow Pokemon.)

Flareon can get Ember early on, and soon get Flamethrower or Fire Blast. No good STAB my ass.

By no good STAB we meant no good Physical STAB. Our bad. He's still outclassed by Arcanine though, who has all around superior stats.

Natu's kinda good, Xatu has a base 95 special attack and a (passable) 75 base attack.

Although outclassed by Salamence and Lugia lategame, it DOES seem like he can be useful early-mid game...I'll retest him.
For XD:

Where is (Shadow) Electabuzz? His utility in the final battle with shadow half is absolutely amazing, if lugia and mence are high, he definitely deserves to be high too.

We forgot, sorry. Shadow Half IS useful, but if you already have the other Elekid leveled up, he is really not worth it. I'll think about it though.

Hypno deserves to be at least mid. I used him as a wall for shadow moves very effectively from Gorigan to Eldes both times I played through XD.

Hypno is also really slow and not terribly strong. He is a good wall, yes, but that's really all he is good for. He's not fast or strong enough to sweep.

TBH, while they are all very good, the fight vs. Greevil is THE last major fight in the game, and at least Lugia can be used against Greevil. (In fact, it is almost necessary to weather hits so you can catch his SHadow Pokemon.)
Not really. It can be done without Lugia, you just need to keep them asleep a lot.

Actually, in this game, expecially lategame, things that can sleep are good. I'll make a list of all the sleepers.

COLOSSEUM:

Noctowl: Eh, sort of useful. Could be better typed, though it IS immune to EQ.
Skiploom: Weak offensively, but good supporter, and is immune to EQ.
Stantler: This guy is underestimated offensively... but he comes late.
Swablu: Altaria has good defensive typing, and has good bulk. Now, Sing may be innacurate, but still, Altaria is great. BTW, immune to EQ.
Smeargle: Haha, to get a sleep move on this guy you have to already have a sleeper. Good for a joke.
Misdreavus: It get's hypnosis, right? It's immune to EQ, right?

Not very many. Of those, Altaria and Stantler are best, followed closely by Skiploom, who is followed closely by Noctowl and Misdreavus, who are the last decent ones.

XD: *I'm doing this game off of faded memories and watching other people play, so I might not get it all right. Bleh.*

Shroomish: Yay! An unevolved pokemon who might not even be getting spore before Greevil!
Gulpin: If it really comes with sing, then that helps it A LOT. It has bulk... unfortunately weak to EQ, but that isn't as common in XD.
Roselia: Erm... not much to say about it.
Delcatty: FUCK NO. Bad type, bad stats, no.
Lunatone: Bulky, has good resists, better than the others I've mentioned at sleeping (Swalot is cool on the offense though.)
Tangela: Good physical defense. Offensively, it hits fairly well (Having to rely on Mega Drain sucks[no pun intended]), makes for a decent supporter (Needed for the end game)
Butterfree: Certainly better than ROSELIA. And unevolved shroomishes. But it still sucks balls.
Venomoth: Better than Butterfree, but that isn't saying much.
Weepinbell: JUST USE TANGELA FOR FUCKS SAKE. At least HE isn't neutral to EQ!
Hypno: Good special defense and a decent STAB.
Altaria: Nope. It comes a lot later nowadays.
Chansey: I said "Supporter", not "offensive hindrance".
Poliwrath: Get's cool STAB, some decent stats. No surf FTL though.
Marowak: Even if it comes with Sing, you should have a PURIFIED sleeper by this point.
Exeggutor: What is this I don't even
Hoppip: Good type. Makes a good supporter.
Paras: 4x Resist to EQ, has Spore for always working sleep. Bit weak on the offensive.

Looking over the list, Hypno, Tangela, Lunatone, Jumpluff, and Swalot look like the best ones.

And here's a special!

HOW TEAMS (That don't want to abuse Salamence/Lugia/Electabuzz/ect. near the end) SHOULD BE IN XD:

1 Supporter. The supporter should know a sleep move, possibly Paralisis if this is to early for sleep. It is not to hindering offensively, but might not be able to deal much damage outside of SE hits. Should be fast or bulky.

EXAMPLES: Tangela, Hypno, Jumpluff.

2 Whittlers. The whittlers will have attacks that can... well, whittle their foes. They also will have attacks that can cause mass damage, and maybe will back up the supporters with status.

EXAMPLES: Jolteon (Thunder Wave and Bite), Gardevoir (Weaker psychic attacks, Thunder Wave).

2 Sweepers: The sweepers will easily take out pokemon ingame, 1 shotting almost anything that doesn't resist their attacks. They may not be FAST, but they can rip down an opponents team so the Whittlers and Supporter can switch in.

EXAMPLES: Zangoose, Houndoom, Medicham.

1 Wild Card: The wild card can be anything. Maybe you chose your favorite pokemon. Maybe you want another Supporter or Sweeper. Maybe your team is just to strong for anything ingame, and you need to get a pokemon later on just to stop overleveling. Here you go.

EXAMPLES: Anything!

And there you go. Not making one for Colosseum because teams of 6 are suicide in that game.

I recently played through XD again.

The tier list has gotten a complete revamp. Please check the OP and make comments/suggestions. Thanks. :)

(Btw I'll make it grammatically correct and stuff later.)

Hmm, I agree with the Colosseum tier list, almost in full. But since we are partially evaluating a Pokemon's utility based on how late in the game you get, maybe early access to said Pokemon should be considered a bit more. This is especially true in a game where obtaining a Pokemon and grinding it is much harder, because purifying it often takes a long time (I'm ignoring Colognes here) as well.

For example, Misdreavus gets Psybeam (although that's about it, base 65 STAB in Colosseum isn't bad) and has pretty good stats. However, Misdreavus can also be obtained relatively early if I recall correctly. Therefore, it becomes easier to use in a sense. Also, Misdreavus can provide a nice Normal immunity and Levitate. For this, I suggest moving Misdreavus to the High tier.

Next, you might have missed out on Sudowoodo. It can be obtained after the fight with Miror B which is pretty early. Also, level 35 isn't too bad considering where one is relative to the game. Low Kick, Rock Slide, and Faint Attack also can supply decent coverage. The only downside is relatively low power moves and terrible speed. For this, I suggest the Medium tier; although useful early on in the game, it sort of gets outclassed by stuff like Flygon, which can fill a similar role.

All in all, I think I agree with everything else. Especially Espeon and Umbreon being High tier; when I was younger I played with only them (two-pokemon team) pretty much, and they're excellent.

Few things that you're going to have to address.

1. I tried to make all the sentences actual full sentences, hence the "late in the game" thing. I didn't do it to every sentence because, if you feel you don't want this to be something with complete sentences, that's fine. However, if you want it to be more "professional" you'll have to go through each one and correct them like I did the first few sentences.

2. Make sure there's at least a period at the end of every sentence.

3. Decide if there's a space between the Pokemon's name and the hyphen or not. I think it looks better with a space, but I'm not sure how this will look onsite either. (Example: Houndour - , instead of Houndour- )

4. Is there any real reason for the Pokemon listed as they are outside of the tiers, or is it simply arbitrary? If you're ranking them, then that needs to be specified somewhere, but if there's no order outside of the tiers, then they should be in alphabetical order.

5. I'm not sure if level-up, or level in general is supposed to be capitalized. Someone else will have to confirm this.

Outside of all of that.

The best possible Pokemon is one that is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and takes pitiful damage from everything, while also learning every possible HM, healing itself automatically, and sporting some neat ability to top it off.

A buyable TM can always be assumed, of course.

Don't confuse an efficient run with a speed run. Speed runs are often segmented and recorded runs with luck manipulation through resets, and aim for the absolute fastest time, but the real time spent on them is usually much, much more. I'll just assume you want to play through in a relatively low time frame.

-Matchups: Do they fare well in boss battles?

The Pokemon are also ranked in no particular order.

I see some major discrepancies between this guide and the on-site Platinum / DP In-game tier guides, namely the use of first person (I'll, I'm, etc). At the very least, shouldn't the introductory paragraphs be the same? If I'm wrong please correct me, but that's what I understood was supposed to be the case. Either way, excellent guide!

edit: misinterpreted your correction style, sorry! But yeah, the paragraphs should probably match.

So what I've done is split up the XD tiers a little more to make them more reflective of what you'll actually experience in-game. There's far more Pokemon to catch in XD than the first one. I also disagreed with a few placements that Fireburn gave, so I moved some of those around.

I'd like some more critiques while I finish up putting in more details for a few of the mons and clean-up times of availability for a few of the shadow Pokemon. (What I plan on doing for XD is: early-game is everything up to Delcatty, early mid-game is everything up to Lunatone, late mid-game is everything up to Hypno/Primeape, and late-game would be everything after that).

EDIT: Also I was wondering if I should make this two separate articles...

OK this is ready for GP checks again, there's quite a bit more information than the last time this was checked so it'll need them I think.

On it, cap'n ^.^

The best possible Pokemon is one that is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and takes 1 HP damage from everything, while also learning every possible HM, heals itself automatically, and has some neat ability to top it off.

A buyable TM can always be assumed, of course.

Don't confuse an efficient run with a speed run. Speed runs are often segmented and recorded runs with luck manipulation through resets, and aim for the absolute fastest time, but the real time spent on them is usually much, much more. Just assume you want to play through in a relatively low time frame.

Team size is actually by far most efficient if you use one member, but I'm assuming something more like 3 members as otherwise you get extremely centralized lists with starters and earlygame Pokemon at the far top and everything else is pretty much too crappy to bother with.[/SIZE]

The earlier ones had a subject in the first sentence, so I added them to the latter ones for consistency (usually just Is --> It's). I think it's "level-up moves", "an easy level up". Ignore me if I'm off there. Also, PokéCoupons and PokéSpots are singular words, I think >.>

Solid work ^.^

Implemented. I'm almost positive it's a space in Poke Spots and Poke Coupons, I'm going to check again tonight though to make sure.

EDIT: yeah just checked and there is a space between the two words

XD001 Lugia
Stats: Uber Strong
Availability: You get it right before the final boss battle.
Movepool: Very Wide
Additional Comments:
Comes very late, but is very sturdy and extremely useful in the final battle to wear down and take hits from Shadow Pokemon. However, it requires you to lose the following battle and then go to the box and rebattle the boss since there is no break in between.
I don't know if it's too late to post this, but I have to say I disagree with Lugia's description. You say: "...it requires you to lose the following battle and then go to the box and rebattle the boss since there is no break in between". If you battle Greevil with 5 Pokémon in your team, Lugia will be in your party after catching it, so it's not necessary to lose the battle to have Lugia in your party. In fact, I think that it's recommended to battle Greevil with 5 Pokémon in your team, in order to have Lugia ready in the battle, because it's very important to wall Greevil's Shadow Pokémon attacks while you are trying to catch them. All in all, I think those additional comments must be changed. Also, I think Flareon should be in the same tier as Numel. It's outclassed by Arcanine and Houndoom, but it's not worse than Camerupt. I've tried both, and both work well, the problem with Camerupt is that Numel evolves too late (Lv 33), but Flareon is available much earlier. Flareon isn't also as weak as Camerupt to Water-type moves, and has access to Flamethrower, and Shadow Ball.

These in-game tiers are amazing. I've beaten this game a few times. I remember training a Phanpy, who is in the bottom tier, and I had to go with Take Down until it learnt EQ... I shouldn't have done it; however, Donphan STAB EQ is amazing late in the game, but I don't think it's worth the effort training...

Colosseum

Okay instead of c/ping the entire check here and dicking around with sprites, I'm going to just paste the parts that I actually made changes... there are very few of them lol.

Colosseum
The best possible Pokemon is one that is obtained at the start of the game, can OHKO enemies off the bat, and takes 1 hpHP damage from everything, while also learning every possible HM, heals itself automatically, and has some neat ability to top it off. Such a Pokemon doesn't exist, of course, but this means that Pokemon closer to this ideal are the best ones possible.
...

Team size is actually by far most efficient if you use one member, but I'm assuming something more like 3 members as otherwise you get extremely centralized lists with starters and early(space)game Pokemon at the far top and everything else is pretty much too crappy to bother with.

...

Quagsire
Stats: Average
Availability: Early
Movepool: Wide
Additional Comments: It's low Speed hurts its effectiveness, but it has a good typing, defenses, and movepool.

XD

Eevee (Vaporeon)
Stats: High
Availability: Beginning
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It's very bulky and strong, is the first Pokemon you get, and you get great TMs to teach it. It also gets STAB Surf which hits both of your opponent's Pokemon.

...

Dodrio
Stats: Above Average
Availability: Late
Movepool: Decent
Additional Comments: It comes late, but is the best offensive Flying-type you get, aside from Salamence, you get. It's also pretty fast and comes with good moves once purified.

XD001 Lugia

Movepool: Very Wide
Additional Comments: Comes very late, but is very sturdy and extremely useful in the final battle to wear down and take hits from Shadow Pokemon. However, it requires you to either lose the following battle and then go to the box and rebattle the boss since there is no break in between, or enter the battle versus Greevisl with only 5 Pokemon.

Uh…

Unless I'm mistaken, you can't actually teach Surf to Vaporeon, since you don't have access to any of the HMs in the console games.

Pokemon Colosseum In-game Tier List

Mid Tier

Low Tier

Bottom Tier

Introduction

The tiers for Colosseum are based on the following:

Availability: Can you get them early on and are they easy to get?

Stats: Do they have a usable stat distribution?

Moves: Do they have a good movepool that needs little TM support? (By that I mean hard to replace TMs such as ones you get from Gyms.)

Power: Are they strong enough to sweep through enemies without taking too much damage in return?

Type: Do they have useful STABs and resistances?

Match-ups: Do they fare well in boss battles?
