Hi QC, I've been playing around with Alakazam in OU lately and this set has been working quite well. I don't know if anyone has reserved this, but I haven't found anything to suggest that it has. I've only used this set at the moment, and haven't tested anything else yet, but I might test out Specs or Lead Kazam later.

Why this set deserves to be on-site:
- Outspeeds the common Choice Scarf Tyranitar and OHKOs with Focus Blast (If it hits)
- Substitute allows it to dodge Bullet Punch, Psychic is there for STAB (Hits non-resisters very hard), Focus Blast and 4th move is for coverage. HP Fire is preferred, but Signal Beam can be used to hit Starmie, I guess.
- Can force out quite a few of Pokemon (Like Infernape, Gengar, Machamp) and set up a Substitute.
- Has a reasonable chance to 2HKO 252 HP / 252 Def / 4 Spe Bold Blissey with Focus Blast after SR and a layer of Spikes.

Additional Comments:
- Entry hazards are very helpful for Alakazam to get his 2HKOs and OHKOs
- Life Orb is preferred, even with Sandstorm, since Alakazam is so powerful and frail it doesn't matter anyway

Teammates and Counters:
- Magnezone to remove Scizor, probably the biggest threat. Magnezone can also remove stuff like Scarf Jirachi.
- Gyarados and Suicune can also set up on Bullet Punches
- Skarm and Forretress can setup Spikes on Choiced Bullet Punches
- Lucario and Infernape scare away Blissey
- Scizor is the biggest threat, can catch Alakazam without a Sub and Bullet Punch/Pursuit mindgames with Alakazam. Calm Blissey walls this set. Weavile (Although uncommon) is a death sentence for non-Subbed Alakazams.

I would say Life Orb shouldn't be an option. If we assume just Stealth Rocks and Standstorm, both of which are highly likely, just from setting up a sub and getting 1 attack in you take: 12 + 6 + 25 + 10 + 6 = 59%. Just from switching in on something you are garunteed to force out, subbing and attacking. These are very common battle condition. With only leftovers as an option you take 47% while it doesnt seem like a big difference on paper, it nets you 1 more turn to attack. If the opponent has spikes on the field (Forretress and Skarmory added together were #6 in usage so spikes isn't all too uncommon) then forget it with SubLO.

In my opinion SubLO sets cannot function in OU unless it is on something that has Pain Split.

Also I think that Protect could be slashed in with HP Fire/Signal Beam. Gives you a chance to scout Scizor, similar to MysticGar.
 
I'm pretty sure it's a silent agreement that I'm to do all Sub + 3 attacks sets. Nah, jk.

As for Protect, it's unneeded since Alakazam should have a Sub up, which protects it from Scizor. If it doesn't have a Sub up and you use Protect and it Pursuits you, you're stuck using Focus Blast while it can OHKO you.

Signal Beam also hits Celebi besides Starmie and helps finish off a weakened Ttar (<50% HP).
 
How exactly do you get Alakazam in safely? Or do you just sac something and bring it in later? If you do get this in safely, is the amount of damage you take from a Sub + LO recoil actually worth it? I'm inclined to say no on this, but other QC could weigh in, or perhaps you could show me some more convincing evidence as to if it's good or not.
 
I'm leaning towards disapproving this set for the time being. I don't see Alakazam having too many opportunities to switch in and then set up a Substitute -- entry hazards of every single type, and the fact that this is a pretty frail Pokemon make me think that it cannot be as effective as expected. However, before taking a final decision, could you provide some logs of this set being successful please? I'd like to see a row of consecutive logs, not only situations in which you show how Alakazam beats 1-2 Pokemon. Thanks.
 
I'm not really sold on this at all. Wouldn't Protect be better than Sub on such a fragile Pokemon? I mean, Sub is mostly useful for allowing you to scout and hit Pokemon faster than you who switch in, but since you already outspeed most Pokemon who you're trying to scout (Scarf TTar) then why not just use Protect? Sub LO is a really bad idea on a Pokemon who takes full entry hazards and has paper-thin defenses. No from me (the Protect tip is just from a player to player, I still don't see this being very useful even with Protect).
 
@shrang This would be a full OU analysis not just a single set, since the current one is entirely UU, correct? Even if this specific set does not go through maybe Alakazam should have an OU analysis, it is only just outside the top 50, so people are likely to want to glance through an analysis and know what to prepare for in the OU environment.

@phil it would let you hit slower Pokemon twice if you sub on the switch, which could be pretty important sometimes. But it does look like it would faint to passive damage very fast..
 
I would appreciate logs of this set. I can understand how it works and it doesn't sound terrible in premise, since the risk is a lot lower and it's not going to be sticking around for long. Considering how "meh" Alakazam is in genera, this set doesn't look any worse than current Alakazam sets.
 
Yeah, I'll see if I can rack up some logs. Just a thing about Sub/LO, the reason why I put LO is simply because Alakazam is so frail that he would have died really quickly anyway, so while he's in there, you might as well spam him until he dies to residue damage or the opponent anyway. I mean, this set can in a lot of cases net you an extra kill than if you didn't have the Sub. I could consider Expert Belt or Protect, though.
 
Yeah, I'm iffy about this set. It's incredibly hard to switch in, not to mention the sheer amount of damage it takes just for switching in WITHOUT taking damage, setting up a sub, and attacking once. There are a lot of things in OU that are capable of switching in, setting up a sub, and destroying worlds. Is Alakazam really special enough to warrant a set for being arguably the worst at it?

In short, why is Alakazam better than Gengar at this? Alakazam *is* faster, but that speed doesn't matter when you can't reliably hurt Starmie and Azelf, the only non-Scarftar things that outspeed Gengar and not Alakazam. Sure, Scarftar outspeeding is kinda gay, but then again, when you throw up a Substitute and OHKO it with Focus Blast, does it really matter? On top of that, Gengar has *three* immunities, a STAB that isn't arguably worthless, and the ability to run some hijinks with stuff like Pain Split. It's good in all the ways that Alakazam is, well... not.
 
I don't think it can really switch into anything. This means you either have to run this as a lead (which is risky with taunt aerodactyl meaning you can't sub) or risking this guy being simply dead weight. Due to losing the resistances that give Gengar a chance to set up sub on the switch, I don't think this is viable.
 
i could see this set working theory, utilizing its speed and good spa stat. but in OU with sr and sand being a common battle element along with priority i question this set. it obviously cant switch into anything, meaning something just fainted in order for it to come in and attempt to scare away a pokemon to set up sub.

im not saying no right away since i know this set has potential, il just wait on the logs

I could do a full analysis, but I might need some help with that, since a lot of the sets aren't very viable. The only ones I can think that could work are a Specs set or a Counter lead.

Anyway, I've got 4 logs of just Alakazam doing something. I've probably played about 10 matches so far, and 4 of them had Kazam doing something, while the other ones had either something else sweeping, or people ragequit, or the opponent sets up, and sweeps everything left. They aren't that impressive, but hey, it's Alakazam.
