Torterra (Specially Defensive)

Major props to Franky for getting this through QC and posting an awesome skeleton. Pretty cool set. ^_^

Also Franky I changed the 4 def ev's to Spe because that's all Torterra needs to outspeed 128 Spe Adamant Rhyperior, no need for any more. ^_^ :P

move 4: Leech Seed / Roar
item: Leftovers
nature: Careful
evs: 252 HP / 252 SpD / 4 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Torterra's decent base 85 Special Defense is often overshadowed by his much higher Defense. However, with this set, Torterra can counter some of the most powerful special attackers in UU, including Mismagius, Alakazam, and Rotom. This Torterra is also one of the best switch-ins to Slowbro, easily absorbing any of Slowbro's attacks (including Thunder Wave) and retaliating with STAB Wood Hammer. Even without any EV investment, Torterra's Defense stands at a respectable 246, giving him good mixed walling capability. His Ground- and Rock-type resistances allow him to switch into Rhyperior, Donphan, and Aggron (beware of Ice Punch) and hit them with the appropriate attack.

Wood Hammer is Torterra's main STAB attack and hits hard even without EV investment in Attack. Torterra's STAB Earthquake maims Steel- and Fire-type switch-ins, something his fellow Grass-type Venusaur is unable to do effectively. Synthesis grants Torterra instant recovery and allows him to continuously switch into special threats, like Mismagius. Common Mismagius counters such as Spiritomb and Registeel can eventually be worn down, but Torterra can simply replenish his health to continually prevent Mismagius from sweeping. Torterra's last moveslot is dedicated to utility options. Leech Seed grants Torterra and his teammates extra recovery while sapping the opponent's health. Roar lets Torterra force out stat boosters like Curse Miltank and prevents Scyther and Moltres from switching in too easily while Stealth Rock is up.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Torterra has access to Stealth Rock, and can use it over Leech Seed or Roar in the last slot. It's an inferior option, however, as there are better users of Stealth Rock and the other two moves grant Torterra far more utility.

With maximum EVs and a positive nature, Torterra's Special Defense maxes out at a respectable 295. An unboosted Shadow Ball from Mismagius does a mere 23.1% - 27.4%, while +2 Shadow Ball deals 45.7% - 54.1%. As Mismagius uses Nasty Plot, Torterra can strike her with Wood Hammer, which has a chance to OHKO after Stealth Rock. Another scenario includes Mismagius using Substitute as Torterra switches in; as Mismagius sets up with Nasty Plot, Torterra can hit her with Wood Hammer, survive the incoming Shadow Ball, and OHKO her the next turn. With this spread, Torterra will never be KOed by Psychic followed by Signal Beam from Timid Life Orb Alakazam, even with Stealth Rock factored in. This grants Torterra another advantage over Venusaur, who has no hope of fighting against Alakazam.

Torterra can invest some EVs into Speed to outspeed certain threats, but this should be done with great care, as losing Special Defense means Torterra will be less adept at his walling duties. With 40 Speed EVs, Torterra jumps ahead of 4 Speed Clefable so he can hit her before she heals. 96 Speed EVs allow Torterra to outspeed and OHKO 4 Speed Lanturn before Lanturn can strike back with Ice Beam. 4 Speed EVs is usually enough, though, as they allow Torterra to outpace most threats like Rhyperior and Azumarill.

Torterra makes a great defensive core with Weezing and Milotic. Rest + Sleep Talk Weezing can handle Venusaur and sponge the strong STAB Fighting attacks that Torterra can't. Milotic grants great Ice- and Fire-type resistances for Torterra, (especially against the likes of Moltres) while Torterra provides insurance against Electric attacks in return. A teammate Omastar will have ample opportunities to set up entry hazards, thanks to Torterra's ability to draw out Weezing. Since he doesn't enjoy status, Torterra appreciates the support of a Cleric. Chansey can use Heal Bell and pass Wish to Torterra if he hasn't had a chance to heal with Synthesis. Altaria makes a nice alternative Cleric; it resists Torterra's Fire weakness while Torterra resists Altaria's Rock weakness, but the two share a nasty 4x Ice weakness. Altaria also poses more of an offensive threat than Chansey with Dragon Dance.

Torterra makes a great defensive core with both Weezing and Milotic. Rest Talk Weezing can handle Venusaur and sponge strong Fighting STAB attacks that Torterra can't handle. Chansey can rid of any status Torterra has acquired and can pass Wish if he hasn't had a chance to heal with Synthesis. Altaria makes for a nice alternative cleric, resisting Torterra's Fire and Bug weaknesses, while Torterra resists Altaria's Rock weakness. Altaria can also pose more of an offensive threat than Chansey, but be sure to pack a reliable Ice resist as they're both extremely weak to it.

Haven't grammar checked in quite a long time, so I decided to do it. Looks great brotha, you just need to watch out for simple mistakes. I'd like to see mentions of Moltres countering this set. You mention Fire-types but they fear Earthquake, but Moltres is an exception to this and can switch into this any day. Just mention him and this looks quite good.

Thank you brotha. ^_^

Yeah I'm not really a good writer...doesn't help that I do these at like 4AM. >_>

Will make changes asap.

I checked this a while ago but forgot to post it, so here it is. And, Torterra needs some love. This was a pretty good analysis, and most of my edits were prose-related. There were, however, a few issues:

1) It's EVs, not Evs or EV's. I noticed this error a few times.

2) When using OHKO, 2HKO, etc. as a verb, the correct form is OHKOed or OHKOes, not OHKO'd or 2HKO'd. When used as a plural noun, the correct form is OHKOs or 2HKOs.
used as a verb:
Treecko's powerful Leaf Storm cleanly OHKOes Mudkip and Geodude.
used as a noun:
Treecko's powerful Leaf Storm grants him valuable OHKOs on Mudkip and Geodude.
3) Finally, it's OK to do it once in a while, but avoid using moves as verbs. That is, instead of "as Mismagius Nasty Plots," try "as Mismagius sets up with Nasty Plot" or "as Mismagius uses Nasty Plot."

Other than those issues, this was a pretty well-written, clear analysis. Nice job =)

Withholding stamp until changes are implemented.

Ahhh thanks DZ. :) I wrote this before you taught me the whole OHKO/OHKOes thing so yeah. xD

Should get to this within the next few days.

Yo Thund91, I'm really happy for you, and I'ma let you finish, but...
