Sceptile (Attacking Lead)

Sceptile GP [Fatecrashers/Snorlaxe]

[SET]
name: Attacking Lead
move 1: Leaf Storm
move 2: Quick Attack
move 3: Hidden Power Ice / Endeavor
move 4: Rock Slide
item: Life Orb / Focus Sash
nature: Naive
evs: 40 Atk / 252 SpA / 216 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

Although Sceptile is commonly seen as a sweeper or SubSeeder, using it as an anti-lead to prevent early setup is a viable alternative. Boasting a base 105 Special Attack stat, Sceptile's Leaf Storm is capable of KOing many of the popular leads utilized in the UU metagame. Quick Attack is Sceptile's best choice to beat faster, frailer leads such as Electrode before they can cause serious damage to Sceptile.

Hidden Power Ice allows Sceptile to beat leads such as Torterra and Jumpluff before they can set up Stealth Rock or put Sceptile to sleep, respectively. Endeavor can be used in place of Hidden Power if you opt for Focus Sash, as it allows Sceptile to beat bulky Pokémon who try to set up after Sceptile's Focus Sash breaks. Such Pokemon include Registeel, who often tries to force Sceptile to switch while setting up Stealth Rock.

Rock Slide is a great move for Sceptile, allowing it to effectively dispose of Moltres and Scyther who try to kill it with their STAB attacks, especially the latter, who is a very common lead. Rock Slide also allows Sceptile to beat Swellow if Sceptile holds Focus Sash.

The choice between Life Orb and Focus Sash is hard. Life Orb guarantees many kills that cannot be obtained with Focus Sash, such as the surefire OHKO on Ambipom with Leaf Storm and the 2HKO on Mesprit. However, Focus Sash allows Sceptile to abuse Overgrow and Endeavor, making it a deadly attacker once at 1 HP. Focus Sash is also Sceptile's only way to beat Swellow and the rare Choice Scarf Scyther.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Lum Berry is an option to counter Choice Scarf sleep leads like Venusaur and Jumpluff, while also avoiding Thunder Wave from Uxie, but it usually isn't the best choice due to the power and survivability Sceptile loses without its Life Orb and Focus Sash, respectively. Hidden Power Fire and Earthquake are viable options to beat Steel-types; barring Probopass or Magneton, however, Steel-types can still set up on Sceptile if it doesn't carry Earthquake.

Protect can be used to block Fake Out from the swarm of Ambipom leads seen in UU, but it is hard to find a moveslot for it, and it's only important if Sceptile holds Focus Sash.

Houndoom is a great teammate due to its ability to set up on Mismagius, whose special bulk otherwise poses a problem for Sceptile. Houndoom definitely appreciates Sceptile's ability to remove bulky Water-types such as Milotic with ease, and it loves switching in on Ice and Fire attacks due to its passable special bulk and Flash Fire ability. Houndoom also beats the Bug-type Pokémon who scare away Sceptile.

Spiking Qwilfish, especially with Taunt, can set up on the likes of Registeel; it can safely Taunt and absorb Thunder Wave and Toxic, netting it some free turns to set up Spikes. Spiritomb with Pursuit utterly obliterates Mismagius, who gives Sceptile trouble with its above-average special bulk. Spiritomb also has a field day with Uxie, whose high defensive stats can also be a problem for Sceptile.

I am not finished testing this set yet, but in the few matches i have done so far, i have noticed that this is in need of Earthquake. Earthquake deserves the primary slash over Toxic/ Grass Whiste because it allows you to hit Steel type switch ins which are normally your usual counters. The only lead that Toxic is helping you beat is Uxie, but even then Uxie does whatever it pleases against Scpetile, so Earthquake should really be the primary slash, and Protect should be in the AC so that Ambipom does not break your Sash. Also remove Grass Whistle, it is far to innacurate to be relying on. One more thing, i have found the Ev spread you have in the AC to be more useful than the one you currently have on the set. Here is how Sceptile does against the top 10 leads:

Ambipom: Leaf Storm OHKO'S. Protect on the Fake Out if you have Protect. Win
Uxie: Uxie does everything it is suppose to against you. Loss
Mespirit: I am still yet to encounter one.
Omaster: eaf Storm OHKO's. If it gots a Sash, it manages to get up SR, ut most do not use Sash. Win
Qwilfish: It gets up 1 layer of Spikes due to Sash, but atleast it isn't 2. Win
Alakazam: Leaf Storm and Quick attack defeat it. Win
Hippopotas: I am yet to encounter one.
Cloyster: I am yet to enounter one.

Beats 4 of the top 10 leads, that is pretty useful.

Edit: i gave you alot of changes to make, so i will make it more simple b showing what i think the set should look like.

I used to run a very effective Sceptile lead, and Endeavor should be on this set. Not in AC, slashed on the set. The 3rd slot most likely. Why is Grasswhistle there? Remove it please.

Yeah, I also think to set in AC is better, I think I'll swap them around, cause Sceptile doesn't need to tie with Alakazam to kill it anyway. Earthquake seems like an good option, lets think about it. Here is a list of of some UU steels and Earthquake calcs.
Calcs with a Naive nature and 40 Atk EVs (and 252 SpA evs of course)

Earthquake
 • Aggron - 72.6% - 86.8%
 • Bastiodon - 54.3% - 64.2%
 • Magneton - 134.3% - 158.2%
 • Mawile - 65.1% - 77%
 • My computer won't load Probopass, but we all know it's a 2HKO.
It does pathetic damage to the only ones you will see, Registeel and Steelix. Those two are kills by endeavor which I said before, so I think endeavor. it is a superior option.

Also, idk if I need protect because I can just quick attack before he fake outs.

I used to run a very effective Sceptile lead, and Endeavor should be on this set. Not in AC, slashed on the set. The 3rd slot most likely. Why is Grasswhistle there? Remove it please.
Read above lol. Great suggestion Thund. Also, grass whistle misses 6 times in a row :/ (it was an unranked battle, so no, I'm not stupid.)

THANKS SO MUCH FOR THE LUVIDISCS EVERYONE! (one of them was from me though lol)

EDIT: I don't think I'm supposed to post logs in the first post so I'll put stuff here:

LOGS

So far, I havn't recorded that many battles with this vicious lead, but here is the second one that I did after posting this set. Sadly, the first battle ended in ragequit with Rock Slide flinchhax so I decided not to post it. Also note, Sceptile doesn't KO Moltres because 1) it was a defensive set; 2) I only used 4 attack evs. Also this log really shows how well Sceptile works with Qwilfish. the fish resists fire, ice, and bug; the gecko's weakness. the gecko resists ground, electric, and grass, the fish's weakness, just for the record.

LIFE ORB V.S. FOCUS SASH

Life Orb -
Allows a 2HKO on Mesprit
Can prepare for a late game sweeper (somewhat)
gets KOs on Scyther and Moltres, who will otherwise hit you with SE STAB.
gives random kills on things that can be useful

Focus Sash -
Allows use of endeavor
makes overgrow more useful
beats exploding leads

Tested this set on ladder and it did better than I expected, the only lead I found some problem with was lead destiny bond Mismagius, which isn't even a problem since it can't set up or anything. Great set.

Thanks. yeah, missy, it can be annoying sometimes but Leaf Storm should 2HKO non-bulky variants. I can add pursuit Spritiomb to the teammates. I have a Houndoom on my team that destroys it too.

After getting sort of owned by you with this (in my defense, I was testing out new pokemon on my team and didn't really know what I was doing, but anyways...) I picked the set because I saw the potential of it (see log #1 hehe). I love it. Nice set dude!

Hello. I got your message. Please don't hesitate to contact me again in the future if you need help with a set.

Looking at this set, I see some changes that would make it better:

- I am not seeing the appeal of Focus Sash. Nothing commonly found in the lead position can ohko Sceptile except Moltres, Swellow, Arcanine, and Pinsir. While Rock Slide takes out Moltres, it's not going to be hitting Swellow (it'll just U-Turn on you) and it'll be doing next to nothing against Arcanine due to Intimidate. Pinsir commonly carries Quick Attack itself, and your Rock Slide -> Quick Attack won't KO it before it KOs you with X-Scissor -> Quick Attack. Therefore, Focus Sash pretty much just helps you against Moltres and maybe the occasional Venomoth. There are better items it could be given.
Lum Berry would greatly benefit you against Uxie and Mesprit (both of who enjoy statusing Sceptile) as well as against sleep leads like Jumpluff and the rarer Butterfree.
Life Orb as an item is even better, as it lets you beat Moltres and Scyther (Rock Slide does not ohko either without Life Orb, and Scyther beats you with Quick Attack) and guarantees that you beat Ambipom (Silk Scarf Ambipom can actually beat this set because Fake Out -> Return KOs while Leaf Storm isn't guaranteed a KO back 40% of the time). Life Orb also gives your attacks a bit more oomph, giving you the power to ohko things you normally couldn't, such as Regirock (94 max without Life Orb, 103 min with Life Orb).

- Sorry Thund, not having Focus Sash means Endeavor becomes pointless. Grasswhistle is shit, so that shouldn't be there either...so the best moves in this slot would either be HP Ice (Jumpluff leads/Venusaur switch-ins) or Substitute (status blocking). I'd lean towards Substitute and possibly a slash with Quick Attack for HP Ice.

Those are the quick theorymon changes I noticed. Will test and get back.

Thanks so much FlareBlitz!
Actually, Focus Sash is way better than it looks on paper. For example, I'll go with the last team I just faced. After beating an Electrode with Focus Sash + Quick Attack, all it got was rain dance, then he sent out Ludicolo. It Ice Beamed me, I endeavored, then Quick Attacked for the KO. Without sash, IB would have killed me.
Lum Berry does help Against the pixies though, but I don't see why I would be staying in on them anyway (Mesprit always U-turns, Uxie decides never to die). I guess Lum Berry can move into the actual set, but I think Focus Sash should definatly stay on the set.
wut was that about ambipom? Leaf Storm does 123% - 145.4%.
Life Orb seems like a great choice, I'll definatly slash that in, but I agree with Thund, Sash should be the main choice :/

I hate rejecting your choice, but Focus Sash can definatly beat many things to all our surprising. I think this is one of those tihngs that you will only find out when you test this, but as you said, you havn't tested it yet so nothing you said was bad at all.

So yeah, Life Orb and Lum Berry can definatly be bumped up to the real set. I can slash HP Ice over Rock Slide, but Quick Attack is kinda a must to beat Alakazam and Electrode.

Thanks so much for these suggestions.

Also, Thund and FlareBlitz, I would definatly appreciate some Approval or Rejection if you can =]

Also, thanks for the complement Zigman.

Check your calcs, Focus Sash Sceptile does 94.8% - 111.7% to Ambipom with Leaf Storm (you seem to have Life Orb on for your calc), meaning there's roughly a 40% chance that Ambipom will be able to survive and retaliate with Return. This means that, without Life Orb, Sceptile loses to one of the leads it supposedly has a great matchup against. That's one of the major reasons why I recommended Life Orb in the first place.

While Focus Sash does have situational uses like the one with Electrode, you're better off being able to beat Ambipom (need life orb to guarantee KO), Scyther (need life orb to KO at all), Mesprit (Leaf Storm 2hkos with Life Orb, sub can block status, without life orb Mesprit can just u-turn and break your sash while you do mehish damage) and Regirock (without life orb it thunder waves you and sets up rocks, leaving you essentially 5-5 with hazards on your side...)

In my playtesting so far I haven't encountered any lead that is capable of KOing Sceptile in one shot except a Swellow (which promptly U-Turned to an Arcanine, and U-Turn didn't even take enough health to make my Endeavor useful...), meaning both Endeavor and Life Orb have been wasted items. This might have been a much better set in the whorelass metagame...but for now, it's mostly Ambipom and [bulky lead here], both of which really limit the use of both Focus Sash and Endeavor.

It really is based on how the opponent reacts/plays:

Scenario 1: Sceptile used quick attack fake out failed sceptile leaf storms.
Scenario 2: Sceptile used quick attack Ambipomb used u-turn.

Either way without anticipating your set the opponent would love to go for the fake out first so it's still safe against the majority of Ambipomb leads.

Thanks so much for the feedback! Yeah, I ran my calc wrong lol :/ BUT, if I use Quick Attack before he Fake Outs, he will have ~86% health left (not a calc, but experience, so I don't know where in the range that is.) So, they both beat Ambipom, but Life Orb trades 10% of it's health for the ability to keep it's item, meaning it's a lot stronger, so you've convinced me; Life Orb it is =]. I dunno bout sub though. True, it can trick people into thinking it's a subseeder, but in my tens of battles with Sceptile, I've never really had a free turn (except Stealth Rockers that try to set up on me, but they have all been steel or Miltank) so sub might be kinda infearear to some things. I think Leaf Storm, Rock Slide, HP Ice, and Quick Attack with Life Orb equiped will be the best choice.

Great, I have to say that this is a great thread I have ever seen. Thank you for this great read. Its really very informative and interesting too.

I am new here.

Thanks a lot, this is my third C&C set, and the only one that has been successful so far lol so it's nice to get people to like it =]

Scenario 1 is the only one that will actually happen, because who doesn't want a free dent? If I Quick Attack, Fake Out won't fail. If I use Life Orb and don't use Quick Attack the first turn, I save myself 10% of my HP, and Leaf Storm will kill, which I now have realized is superior.

Thanks a lot FlareBlitz! I've already tested the Life Orb set and it's a lot better so I guess I can just smack it on there.

I'm actually fine with Focus Sash slashed in with Life Orb, but make sure you mention the pros/cons.

Fake out fails if a faster attack hits first and Sceptile has the greater speed if im correct.
might be wrong, but AFAIK Fake Out won't outright fail if the other poke is faster and used a priority atk, it will simply hit after Quick Attack, without flinch.

Fake Out will always hit normally, as long as it's the first turn the pokemon attacks. If a faster priority move is used, Fake Out will simply follow the rules of priority and hit after, losing it's Flinch effect. The only move that fails unless it goes first is Sucker Punch.

I guess I could use some Pros and cons, but I'd rather keep Life Orb as the primary option as you said before anyway.

Anything else?

EDIT: HP Ice hasn't been doing crap for me. Maybe it's just me, but it has really low damage input to anything I try to hit it with. It 3HKOs 0/0 Venusaur...Flying pokemon usually take more from Rock Slide anyway.

Sorry I thought I had already stamped this .____. In the future, if you make all the changes I point out and I don't stamp it, message me.

Ok thanks so much for the stamps guys =] I'm kinda new to this...I change the prefix to copyediting then write the analysis?

EDIT: Oh it's already changed lol ok so do I write an analysis now? sorry bout my C&C noobness =/

Yes, you have to write the analysis.

Make sure you look at some of the other analyses in the "uploaded" section or other "copyediting" analyses and understand the formatting and the standards of prose and grammar/punctuation expected from C&C, this will save you some time in edits and prevent you from pissing off the GP folks.
