Hi C&C. Here is my analysis for Grimer!

[OVERVIEW]
OVERVIEW]

Grimer's poor typing coupled with its imbalanced stat distribution makes it seem a bit underwhelming at first glance and may drive some people away from using it. However, Grimer's fair amount of bulk and great Attack stat actually allow it to be an effective offensive Pokemon. Grimer's extensive movepool allows it to help break down walls or even sweep late-game with its great type coverage. No matter what Grimer’s job is, it will be a great asset to any team.

[SET]
name: Physical Attacker
move1: Gunk Shot / Poison Jab
move2: Shadow Sneak
move3: Fire Punch / Ice Punch
move4: Explosion
item: Life Orb
ability: Sticky Hold
nature: Adamant
evs: 196 HP / 196 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD

[SET COMMENTS]

This set utilizes Grimer’s great Attack stat to deal huge amounts of damage to the opposing Pokemon. Gunk Shot is Grimer's main STAB move, and despite having poor coverage and accuracy, provides raw power. Poison Jab is a good alternative if you want a more reliable STAB option; however, the drop in power is very noticeable. Shadow Sneak provides Grimer with priority, and allows it to pick off weakened Pokemon. Fire Punch aids Grimer in dealing with Steel-type Pokemon that wall the rest of the set, while Ice Punch lets Grimer nail Gligar on the switch. If Grimer has Poison Jab instead of Gunk Shot in the first slot, Ice Punch also provides a strong, reliable answer to Dratini, but otherwise it is unnecessary for that purpose, as a neutral Gunk Shot packs more power than a super effective Ice Punch. Finally, Explosion allows Grimer to go out with a bang, dealing huge amounts of damage even to Pokemon that resist it.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Since any choice of move in the third moveslot leaves Grimer vulnerable to certain Pokemon, partnering it with a solid counter to those Pokemon greatly benefits Grimer. If Ice Punch is used, Steel-types completely wall this set; therefore, Choice Scarf Magnemite makes a good teammate, trapping them via Magnet Pull and taking them out with a STAB Thunderbolt. If Fire Punch is used, there are no Pokemon that resist all of Grimer's attacks, but Gligar can easily come in and set up a Swords Dance without fear. Pairing Grimer with Choice Scarf Snover can remedy this, as it can take down Gligar with Blizzard, while taking little damage from Earthquake. Oran Berry can be used in lieu of Life Orb to restore Grimer’s health, but the extra power will be sorely missed.

[Team Options]

Choice Scarf Magnemite is a great teammate if Grimer lacks Fire Punch, beating all Steel-types who would wall this set otherwise. A Pokemon that can counter Gligar is helpful. Bronzor would do well in this case, being immune to Earthquake and able to shrug off all of Gligar’s auxiliary moves reasonably well. Bronzor can then retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. Bronzor also beats most Ground-types that hit Grimer hard.

[Optional Changes]

Grimer has the ability to run a special set consisting of Sludge Bomb, Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, and Hidden Power Ice, but Grimer’s sub-par Special Attack stat greatly lowers its viability. Substitute can be used in the third slot to scout for Pokemon that counter Grimer, but you lose out on coverage as a consequence. Grimer has a couple of other moves that it can successfully utilize. Payback can be used to hit Ghost-types harder, while Rock Slide can be used to deal more damage to Flying-, Bug-, and Fire-types.

[Counters]

Steel-types like Bronzor counter Grimer very well. Unless Grimer carries Fire Punch, it cannot hurt Bronzor much, and Bronzor can proceed to set up Stealth Rock before hitting Grimer hard with Psychic. Gligar can also switch into any move bar Ice Punch and proceed to Earthquake, or U-turn to scout the switch-in. Diglett cannot switch into any move, because a combination of Grimer's STAB move and Shadow Sneak has a chance of knocking it out.

Choice Scarf Magnemite is a great teammate, beating all Steel-types that would otherwise wall this set. A Pokemon that can counter Gligar is helpful. Bronzor does this well, being immune to Earthquake and able to shrug off all of Gligar’s moves reasonably well. Bronzor can then retaliate with Hidden Power Ice. Yeah, I agree with the fact that curse should be on this set, Grimer doesn't need the speed as it is so slow already, and it doesn't hurt to increase Grimer's limited bulk and amazing attack, especially since you are slower, and if you intend on sweeping, you'll need the extra bulk for you to last the rest of the game.

grimer has zero reason to set up curses. It has a very limited scope of things it can hit, it doesn't have the bulk to start cursing, it's easily taken out even with curses, has to sacrifice coverage to even Curse in the first place, and you'd be better off hitting things anyways. +1 boosts are generally not worth since you'd be better off hitting them again (which does more damage anyways).

Onto the attacker set, I really feel return and fire blast need to be removed, the third slot should be brick break slashed in with ice punch. Grimer's real merit is being able to explode on things and being able to nail ghosts that are immune to explosion. Mono-Poison is just a terrible typing in every aspect, so you'll need to show off Grimer's movepool to make it work. Also, Gunk Shot should be the main option with Poison Jab behind it since a lot of things resist poison and you'd want to hit them as hard as possible with your main stab.

Use Fire Punch over Fire Blast. It takes advantage of Grimer's higher Attack and the only Steel-type that normally runs more Defense than Special Defense is Aron, and Grimer shouldn't be sticking around (hah!)while Aron's out anyways. And I agree with Kannon, I think they high risk / high reward Gunk Shot is a fine choice on Grimer over Poison Jab.

All right. Like Darkamber8828 said however, Grimer doesn't get Brick Break. I'll remove Fire Blast, add in Fire Punch, and make Gunk Shot the main slash. Thanks!

Since Steel type pokemon walls this set, but dragon types don't (due to Gunk Shot) I suggest you put Fire Punch in the first slash to counter the Steel Pokemon.

You do have a point. Gunk Shot does more to Dratini than Ice Punch, so I may slash Fire Punch in front of Ice Punch. I want more people to comment on what they think, before I actually do it. Its not a bad idea though.

Fire punch should definantly be the first option. Fire is your only option for steels seeing as Brick Break isn't a move on it.

Just proofreading to make the GPers lives easier. A lot of awkward wording and very repetitive, but information wise its OK I guess. Also: Its <type>-type not <type> type (e.g. Fire-type not Fire type) and super-effective, not super effective.

[SET COMMENTS]

This set utilises utilizes Grimer’s great Attack stat to deal huge amounts of damage to the opponent’s Pokemon. Gunk Shot is its main STAB move, and despite Poison having poor coverage and accuracy, it provides a solid amount of raw power. Grimer needs it for power, while the accuracy is lesser of an issue. However, Poison Jab is also an option a good alternative if you want a more reliable STAB option, but ; however the power drop drop in power is very noticable. Shadow Sneak is for provides Grimer with priority, and helps Grimer allows it to pick off weakened Pokemon. Fire Punch aids Grimer in dealing with Steel-type Pokemon that wall the rest of the set, although, packing Ice Punch allows Grimer to nail Gligar on the switch. If Grimer has Poison Jab intsead of Gunk Shot in the first slot, Ice Punch also provides a strong answer to Dratini, but otherwise it is unnecessary for that purpose as a neutral Gunk Shot packs more power than a 2x super-effective Ice Punch. The third slot should probably be Ice Punch, allowing Grimer to nail Gligar and Dratini, though you must predict Gligar’s switch-in, because Gligar can OHKO Grimer with Earthquake. Fire Punch can also be used in the last slot if you are worried about Steel types who otherwise wall this set. {You should probably list the moves in the Set Comments in the same order they are listed in the slashes--also a neutral Gunk Shot has more power than a 2x super-effective Ice Punch} Finally, Explosion allows Grimer to go out with a bang, dealing huge amounts of damage even to Pokemon that resist it in the process. take out many Pokemon in the Little Cup tier, and does lots of damage even when resisted.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Since the third moveslot greatly affects what Grimer can hit for super effective and what it can’t, a Pokemon who can cover that type will greatly benefit Grimer. Since any choice of move in the third moveslot leaves Grimer vulnerable to certain Pokemon, partnering it with a solid counter to those types greatly benefits Grimer. If Ice Punch is used, Steel-types completely wall this set. ; therefore Choice Scarf Magnemite makes for a good teammate, trapping them via Magnet Pull, and taking them out with a STAB Thunderbolt. Pairing Grimer with Choice Scarf Snover makes a good teammate can remedy this, beating as it can take down Gligar with Blizzard, while taking little damage from Earthquake. Oran Berry can be used in lieu of Life Orb to heal restore Grimer’s large HP stat health, but the extra power will be sorely missed. Life Orb is generally the better option to hit hard.

[TEAM OPTIONS]

Choice Scarf Magnemite is a great teammate if Grimer lacks Fire Punch, beating all Steel types who would wall this set otherwise. A Pokemon who can counter Gligar is helpful. [OPTIONAL CHANGES]

Grimer could has the ability to run a Special set with consisting of Sludge Bomb, Thunderbolt, Fire Blast, and Hidden Power Ice, but is not recommended because of Grimer’s low sub par Special Attack stat greatly lowers its viability. Substitute can be used {instead of what?} to scout for Pokemon who that counter Grimer, but you lose out on coverage as a consequence. Grimer has many a couple of other moves that it can use in its moveset. Payback can be used to hurt Ghost types more. Rock Slide can be used to deal more damage to Flying- and Bug-types.{and Fire-types?}

[COUNTERS]
Steel-types such as like {only use such as when stating multiple examples} Bronzor counter Grimer very well. Unless Grimer carries Fire Punch, Grimer cannot hurt Bronzor, and Bronzor can proceed to set up Stealth Rock before hitting Grimer hard with Psychic. Gligar can also switch into any move but bar Ice Punch and proceed to Earthquake, or U-turn to scout the switch-in. Diglett cannot switch into any move, because a combination of Poison Jab Grimer's STAB move and Shadow Sneak will bring Diglett to very low HP, if not knock it out has a chance of knocking it out. but once If Diglett has safely switched in, however, Grimer cannot do anything but Shadow Sneak for a bit more damage, while before Diglett OHKOes Grimer with Earthquake.

For the evs it should be SpD for Special Defense, not Sp. Def

So, 196 HP / 196 Atk / 36 Def / 36 SpD
