[Overview]

Mamoswine is a Pokemon with many great traits, and many serious flaws; starting with the flaws (let's get the bad news out of the way first!), he has 5 weaknesses: Fire, Water, Grass, Steel, and Fighting, all of which are easily exploitable. This, combined with one useless resistance to Poison, one immunity to Electric that is difficult to take advantage of, and subpar Speed and defenses, greatly hamper Mamoswine's potential.

However, it's in the lead position, where these flaws are less significant, that his traits truly stand out. Stealth Rock, a fairly powerful STAB Earthquake, STAB priority that destroys Shaymin-S, a demon to most suicide leads, and the ability to retain his Focus Sash in both sandstorm and hail, combine together to make Mamoswine a surprisingly effective suicide lead.

[SET]
name: Suicide Lead
move 1: Stealth Rock
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: Ice Shard
move 4: Endeavor
item: Focus Sash
ability: Snow Cloak
nature: Adamant / Jolly
evs: 252 Atk / 4 Def / 252 Spe

[SET COMMENTS]

This set plays similar to the OU lead. Mamoswine can set Stealth Rock up against every common lead bar Darkrai. Earthquake is his main STAB, whilst Ice Shard finishes off weakened foes, particularly ones who survive on 1 HP thanks to Focus Sash, and destroys Shaymin-S, who troubles most other suicide leads. After setting up Stealth Rock, Mamoswine should use Endeavour against slower leads, like Dialga and Kyogre, to bring their HP down, often to 1 HP thanks to Mamoswine’s subpar Special Defense and exploitable weaknesses. These foes can then be easily finished off by a teammate.

[ADDITIONAL COMMENTS]

Adamant is the preferred nature; even without a Speed-boosting nature, Mamoswine outruns the many 90 base Speed Uber leads with little investment, such as Groudon, Dialga, and non-Choiced Kyogre. However, Ubers who invest in Speed outspeed even Jolly Mamoswine. There aren't any significant Pokemon a Jolly nature will outspeed. The extra power provided by Adamant outweighs getting the Speed jump on Pokemon rarely seen in Ubers, such as Adamant Heracross and positive natured Heatran.

A Defense reducing nature and 0 IVs in HP and both Defenses is an option, but they don't help against the common Uber leads, and the extra durability is generally more useful.

A sleep absorber is needed to take Darkrai's Dark Void; otherwise, you risk having a Pokemon put out of commission for the entire match. Sleep Talk Kyogre and Heracross, and Choice Scarf Primeape can switch into Dark Void and threaten to OHKO Darkrai.

Deoxys-A can set up Stealth Rock, take Mamoswine down to 1 HP, and finish it off with a priority move. Mamoswine can do the same to it, but Deoxys-A wins the match–up thanks to its superior Speed. Lead Rayquaza will keep its Focus Sash should you decide to set up Stealth Rock, KOing Mamoswine with the combination of Draco Meteor or Fire Blast followed by ExtremeSpeed. Tyranitar is a great teammate; after removing Deoxys-A's and Rayquaza's Focus Sash with one of Mamoswine's moves, Tyranitar can switch into the incoming ExtremeSpeed to finish them off with sandstorm's residual damage whilst shrugging off ExtremeSpeed. As a plus, Mamoswine won't lose its Focus Sash to sandstorm, unlike most other Uber leads. Scizor or Choice Scarf Dialga can replace Tyranitar, though they'll have to take two ExtremeSpeeds. Abomasnow can activate Mamoswine's Snow Cloak ability whilst finishing off Deoxys-A's and Rayquaza's Focus Sash thanks to hail, but it can't take ExtremeSpeed nearly as well as Tyranitar. Opposing Forretress can remove Stealth Rock and Mamoswine's Focus Sash with Rapid Spin whilst setting up its own entry hazards. Forretress is only 3HKOed or 4HKOed by Earthquake depending on the damage rolls thanks to Leftovers recovery. Any Pokemon with a Fire-type attack will fry the bagworm. Groudon with Overheat gets a special mention, because Drought removes the rain that would otherwise patch up Forretress's one weakness.

[Team Options]

Earthquake + Ice Shard 2HKOes min / min Deoxys-S, the most common Deoxys-S variant, preventing it from getting more than one layer of entry hazards up. Unfortunately, max HP / min Def Deoxys-S only has a 42.3% chance of being 2HKOed, assuming an Adamant nature. If this concerns you, your own Forretress can remove any hazards. Removing hazards will also enable Mamoswine to switch out with its Focus Sash intact as it returns to the field, or alternatively, enable Mamoswine to return to the field with 1 HP after activating its Focus Sash, so it can bring an opposing Pokemon down to 1 HP with Endeavour. Forretress also sets up the two types of entry hazards that Mamoswine cannot.

Groudon shrugs off Earthquake and Ice Shard thanks to its high Defense whilst 2HKOing Mamoswine with Earthquake or OHKOing with Overheat. Giratina and Giratina-O can take both Earthquake and Overheat as well as Fighting-type attacks aimed at Mamoswine. Perhaps most importantly, they block Rapid Spin, keeping Stealth Rock on the field. Giratina-O can also roast Forretress with Hidden Power Fire.

Kyogre leads that invest in Speed (the Choiced variants) let Mamoswine set up Stealth Rock but avoid Endeavour and take little damage from Ice Shard. Palkia and Latias can take a Water Spout in place of Mamoswine so it can Endeavour at 1 HP later in the match.

Scizor is commonly used to revenge Mamoswine, switching in on Ice Shard and threatening him with Bullet Punch. Magnezone is the best counter, but otherwise, Dialga, Kyogre, and Groudon can shrug off Bullet Punch and threaten it back. Normal Arceus poses a similar threat as Scizor, revenge killing Mamoswine with ExtremeSpeed whilst avoiding Endeavour and shrugging off Ice Shard. It also has the bulk to switch into an Earthquake. Giratina, Giratina-O, and Groudon are your best hopes against the ExtremeKiller. Choice Scarf users, most of which take little damage from Ice Shard, can revenge Mamoswine after it nabs a KO. Wobbuffet can trap them with Shadow Tag and KO them with Counter or Mirror Coat.

[Optional Changes]

Avalanche is an option over Endeavour to deal more damage than Earthquake if Mamoswine takes a hit. It almost always OHKOes Giratina-O (it has a small chance to survive if it isn't running a Defense reducing nature). Even if it does survive, Ice Shard will finish it off before it can Shadow Sneak unless it has invested heavily in Speed. Avalanche + Ice Shard usually beats Careful Groudon, the most common nature for Groudon leads, but it always fails against Impish Groudon.

Mamoswine can be used outside the lead role for a more offensive approach, wielding a Choice Band or Life Orb, but Mamoswine lacks the Speed to be an effective sweeper or wall breaker, and its only high-powered STAB without a drawbrack, Earthquake, doesn't affect many of the Ubers. STAB Ice Shard generally does not compensate for Mamoswine's faults. The former is very predictable, and the only foe who fears it and who Mamoswine can reliably switch into is Garchomp, whom Mamoswine can only switch into once, as Mamoswine gets 2HKOed by Earthquake. Rayquaza, Latias, and Latios can all OHKO Mamoswine on the switch-in with the right attack, even Latias's Dragon Pulse can OHKO him with Stealth Rock support. Otherwise Ice Shard usually doesn't deal enough damage to Pokemon that aren't weak to it. Avalanche may initially be more appealing on such a set, but Mamoswine cannot afford to move last; his common weaknesses and poor Defenses mean many attacks in Ubers will OHKO him.

[Counters]

Darkrai puts Mamoswine to sleep with Dark Void while simultaneously removing his Focus Sash with Bad Dreams. Mamoswine only removes, on average, less than a third of Darkrai's HP with Ice Shard. Deoxys-A can set up Stealth Rock, bring Mamoswine down to 1 HP, and then finish him off with ExtremeSpeed before he can do the same with Ice Shard. Lead Rayquaza holding a Focus Sash will either only let Mamoswine set up Stealth Rock and remain at full HP, or Mamoswine will break its Sash and be KOed in the process, all the while not being able to set up Stealth Rock due to Rayquaza's ExtremeSpeed. Forretress removes Stealth Rock and Mamoswine's Focus Sash with Rapid Spin whilst setting up its own entry hazards and only being 3HKOed or 4HKOed by Earthquake depending on the damage rolls.

Woah... My favorite Pokemon as an Uber lead...

o_O oh snap. and... it looks like it will work pretty well.

Deoxys-A is definitely a problem >> As well as Forretress... but then again, they were kind of pesky to begin with. Lol.

Good Work ^^

Deoxys-A a problem? If it sets up SR, Mamoswine takes it out with Earthquake + Ice Shard. They decide to attack? Mamoswine lives with Sash, takes it out (or if they have Extremespeed, they win), and they have no hazards. Definitely not THAT big of a problem.

If it doesn't have ES, then no, it isn't a problem. I was saying that if it did, it would be a problem.

I haven't used Mamoswine much at all in Ubers, but I think an offensive set like CB could be more than just OC, IMO. There are heaps of dangerous Dragon-types that Mamoswine can kill with STAB Ice Shard (Stuff like YacheChomp are less common as well), so he's still quite useful. It has enough power to take on some common threats too. Stuff like defensive Kyogre is 2HKOed by Jolly CB EQ, 252/252+ Groudon gets 3HKOed most of the time and (I think) it isn't strong enough to OHKO with anything in return (Offensive variants like RP Groudon get 2HKOed after SR 100% of the time). I'd say Jolly is the better nature to use since you can outspeed neutral base 90s and stuff like that.

The only neutral Speed-nature base 90 is going to invest significant Spe EVs in Speed is Rock Polish Groudon. Even that same set online is still outsped by Adamant Mamoswine. Everything other neutral base 90 Uber invests <40 Spe EVs. Base 90s tend to have either very low Spe investment, or max Spe investment i.e. +nature and 252 EVs. Both Adamant and Jolly Mamoswine lie in between the range.

The main fault I find with Ice Shard is that it's very predictable. If you switch in Mamoswine on Rayquaza, Latios etc the owner knows you're going to Ice Shard. It doesn't do enough damage to too many Ubers. Mamoswine can survive Chomp's Earthquake once; Chomp then swaps out of Mamoswine with the switch-in taking little from Ice Shard, and now Mamoswine can only switch in on Chomp after a kill. Switching into Rayquaza is also tricky; +2 Jolly ExtremeSpeed usually OHKOs with SR, and Ray can OHKO Mamo on the switch-in with Overheat or Outrage. Lati@s has Grass Knot and Draco Meteor; even Latias' Dragon Pulse can OHKO with SR support. Mamoswine isn't a reliable answer to these Pokemon with Ice Shard. Outside of STAB Ice Shard, Mamoswine is inferior to CB Groudon (Ice Fang and Avalanche are too slow), who sees very little usage.

Furthermore, Choice sets require a lot of prediction, and one wrong prediction with Mamoswine often means its dead due to subpar Special Defense and Spe, and its weaknesses. Mamoswine also has a very hard time switching in, given its virtually no resistances (Poison resistance means nothing) and its one immunity is very difficult to take advantage off; all the common users of Thunder: Kyogre, Palkia, Latias, Latios, are very risky to switch into.

Not bad at all, a few unnoticable changes were the apostrophes, they all have to be standard.

Thank's Komodo. I honestly had no idea the apostrophes ended up like that!

I didn't add Honchkrow for Darkrai, as LO Focus Blast can OHKO, especially with LO recoil. I added Choice Scarf Primeape instead.

That one sentence with Rayquaza in the Counters section was utterly confusing, but I think I fixed it. When writing the Counters section, you should either be writing to the person who is looking to counter Mamoswine, or to the person using Mamoswine who is looking for what counters it, not to both.

Anyway, I think I picked up the rest of the mistakes.

Good job with this.
