Arena:
Welcome to Pwnemon's Nature Emporium!

...What, are you surprised that I'm leading you indoors? You say a Nature Emporium should be out in nature? You know I'm always in pursuit of the best: Nature wasn't natural enough for me, so I made an arena that was supernatural! No, wait, that word's been taken... HYPERNATURAL! Pwnemon's Hypernatural Emporium. I like it.

Anyway, what do we do in here? We stimulate the senses of grass-type Pokemon by rapidly cycling between all the common natural types of weather—sun, rain, and sandstorms (no, you're not the first person to point out that sandstorms aren't common, shut up and battle me). Such stimulation drives these Pokemon into overdrive, unleashing their full natural talent. Unfortunately, it also causes them to produce bucketloads of sap—even the ones not based on trees shut up—which is a bug that will be fixed at a later date but until then grants them all the ability Sticky Hold! So yeah, aside from the endangered animal pet store in the back of questionable legality, that's basically all we do here. Now let's battle!

Summary: (if youre really too lazy to read my minimal flavor smh)
  • Cycles between Rain, Sand, and Sun every round
  • Grass-types all have Sticky Hold

After finally finding the new arena (really, that whole 'indoor' bit threw me for a curve), I arrive to see that both battlers are waiting for me. That can't be too big of a surprise though, isn't 99% of ASB waiting for a ref to do something? That being so, this is gonna be a big match with two high profile battlers. I make my introductions to the spectators:

"We all know Pwnemon for his incessant raging and general negativity, but everyone will also acknowledge his terrific battling prowess. In the past he's been quite the underdog, however now that he's taken the position of gym leader there aren't that many battlers that he can be considered an underdog against. Despite the fact that his gym team is still somewhat fresh, he has proven before that it's not always move count that decides battles!

Dark-type specialist LouisCyphre is known for both his ability to command the Pokemon that disappear into the darkness, and his fitting behavior of also suddenly disappearing into the dark for unknown periods of time. He has a cunning and calculating battle strategy, and when he sticks around to finish his battles he's a force to be reckoned with. Can he defeat the fresh leader? Here's a look at the teams to see what both trainers are up against:"

Challenger LouisCyphre's team:

Tomohawk ♀ - Pumyra
Nature: Modest (SpA: +1, Atk: -1)
Type: Flying / Fighting
Flying Type - Flying STAB; immunity to Ground attacks outside extremely odd circumstances even for ground-based flying Pokemon. Enhanced aerial mobility. Superior senses in open air arenas.
Fighting Type - Fighting STAB; ignore weight restrictions of throwing/grappling moves. Superior reaction time in close quarters.

Abilities:
Intimidate - (Can be Activated) When this Pokemon initially goes out into the battlefield, it generates an intimidating roar or war cry that shakes all opponents on the battlefield, reducing thier Attack stage by one (1). The attack drop is maintained at the end of each round. If an opponent switches in a new Pokemon, Intimidate can be activated again as an Action, and will affect all opponents.
Prankster - (Innate) The Pokemon is always prepared for engaging in sneaky tactics and trickery, giving its non-damaging attacks an increase in priority level.
(DW) Justified - (Innate) This Pokemon's body reacts to dark energy, invigorating its passions. When hit by a Dark-type move, the Pokemon's attack will increase one (1) stage. A boost gained this way by an opponent's attack will be maintained at the end of each round. Self-targeted attacks do not maintain boosts.

Finding reprieve in the necessities, Pumyra prefers to live simply and honestly. The falliables of others are of little weight on her mind; one day leads into the next eventually, but not right now. In battle, Pumyra takes her time and etches her advantages to last - no point in anything that doesn't last longer than it takes to create.

Volcarona ♀ - Empress
Nature: Bold (Def: +1, Atk: -1)
Type: Bug / Fire
Bug Type - Bug STAB; More mobility in dense brush or forest conditions. Gain an extra guaranteed attack on multi-hit moves.
Fire Type - Fire STAB; immune to burn, 50% reduction in freeze chance, emit a low glow in dark places, takes additional damage if active open flames are exposed to a water attack. Superior senses in volcanic or brushfire areas.

Abilities:
Flame Body - (Innate) This Pokemon’s external temperature is kept at such a high level that any contact attack used on this Pokemon has a 30% chance of burning the opponent.
(DW) Swarm - (Innate) When this Pokemon’s HP is lower than 33% (flat), the Base Attack Power of any Bug-typed attack is increased by 2. (eg Silver Wind goes from 6 to 8, X-Scissor from 8 to 10)

(Additiona Trait) Levitate - (Trait) This Pokemon naturally floats above the earth when released or easily takes flight, evading Ground moves like Bulldoze, Dig, Earthquake, and Magnitude. Other Ground moves can still hit. Levitate Pokemon will retain the Levitate trait when they use Skill Swap on an enemy, and will steal the opponent's ability (the user can specify if they want a foe or ally to gain Levitate from a Skill Swap.) If a Pokemon with Levitate uses Role Play, they will copy the opponent's abilities and retain Levitate.

Type: Normal / Flying
Normal Type - Normal STAB; adapt comfortably to any surrounding after 3 actions. Able to use Outrage without losing focus.

(DW) Super Luck - (Innate) This Pokemon’s natural skill increases its critical hit rate stage by 1 permanently, to a maximum of 5. Critical hit stages are 1/16, 1/8, 1/4, 1/3, and 1/2.

Easygoing and carefree, Camille makes very little effort in any particular pursuit. She is content to wait for what she wants, and has enough patience for such waiting for often than not. One of Lou's most oft-called upon team members, Camille strikes deftly and decisively, concerned about efficiency.

Cyclohm ♀ - Bellistar (Belle)
Nature: Modest (SpA: +1, Atk: -1)
Type: Electric / Dragon
Electric Type - Electric STAB; 50% reduction in paralysis chance from other electrical attacks, perfect accuracy and 30% chance of Protect breaking Thunder during Rain. Superior senses in power plant environments.

Bellistar was a sort of privileged birth—specially selected from a clutch for use by a battling trainer. Compensating for her standing is often difficult, and she finds herself leaving things unmentioned out of fear of being perceived as uppity or snobbish.

Looking at the Pokemon each trainer brought, both trainer's strategies immediately become clear. LouisCyphre brought a team of 4 Pokemon that aren't threatened by many Grass-types but can all easily deal good damage against them, and can also perform well in a variety of weather conditions. His strategy appears to be: try to beat down Pwnemon before he can build up his team.

On the other hand, Pwnemon's Pokemon also work well in weather conditions, so he can try to predict his opponent's switches and use the weather to overcome the obvious matchup disadvantage. But I would say his overall strategy appears to be: just stall until Lou inevitably goes inactive and then DQ him.

RNG Roll (Arena) [1 (Rain)|2 (Sand)|3 (Sun)]: 2 (Sand)

Both battlers reach their sides of the arena, and all at once a sandstorm is whipped up! Most of LouisCyphre's Pokemon aren't terribly suited to this weather, though Pwnemon has a number of somewhat safe options to choose from. It'll be interesting to see what they both choose to lead with!

I suppose I can't complain. If he wants to play weather games, he's welcome to!

Bellistar - Thunder Wave | Thunderbolt | Draco Meteor
Upon Ludicolo's Protect a1 or a2, Tackle and push down non-Draco Meteor actions.
Upon Ludicolo's Protect a3, Chill.

Ludicolo and Cyclohm is definitely an interesting matchup, especially with sandstorm as the weather. Cyclohm starts out by crippling its opponent with Thunder Wave. That surely slows down Ludicolo's happy dance, but it doesn't prevent Ludicolo from swirling water around Cyclohm using Whirlpool. Partial-trapping moves seem particularly devious in this arena, as they allow the user to take complete advantage of the switching at the end of the round. Both Pokemon take some passive damage; Ludicolo from the whipping sandstorm and Cyclohm from the intense whirlpool.

Trapped in the whirlpool, Cyclohm generates some intense electricity and zaps Ludicolo with Thunderbolt. Ludicolo doesn't seem fazed, and just stops its dance to take a nap. That Rest will allow Ludicolo to remove its paralysis at the end of the action, and heal some HP to boot. Pwnemon seems to be planning on switching it out at the end of the round to force a better matchup, but wants to keep it healthy for later in the game.

Cyclohm is angry. Facing an opponent that so carefree that it doesn't mind taking a nap in the middle of a match, and surrounded by water that won't stop despite the user being asleep, Cyclohm lets down a fearsome Draco Meteor that snaps Ludicolo out of its slumber. This doesn't seem to end well for Cyclohm though, as Ludicolo proceeds to let out an Ice Beam that hits for super effective damage on Cyclohm. The sheer power behind Cyclohm's attack has lowered its offensive power, and this will definitely work to Pwnemon's advantage.

At the end of the round, the sandstorm doesn't seem to be letting up. Pwnemon has definitely seized early control this round, showing us exactly how taking advantage of the ruleset and arena can help overcome a disadvantage in matchup and movepool. Can he keep this lead?

While LouisCyphre is unable to recall his Pokemon trapped in the whirlpool, Pwnemon recalls his Ludicolo for Cradily. In the sand Cradily can be a huge menace, and Cyclohm will have difficulty dealing too much damage. Cyclohm attempts to stall the round out, creating a 20 HP Substitute to shield itself from some hits. However, Cradily just takes the opportunity to use Stealth Rock. This could be incredibly detrimental to LouisCyphre. It'll make switching even more risky for him, although in a tight situation perhaps he can used this perceived risk to his advantage? Lou is supposed to be cunning, after all.

Regardless, Cyclohm shoots a Signal Beam at Cradily and manages to score a critical hit! The sandstorm did lessen the blow, but the attack still did some solid damage. Cradily attempts to strike Cyclohm with Earth Power in retaliation, but it only hits the substitute Cyclohm put up, and it doesn't even manage to break it! Still, Cradily is not meant to be an offensive powerhouse; it's a tough-to-break wall, and as it nibbles on its Leftovers it makes this apparent. Even with the crit, Cyclohm is nowhere near breaking Cradily yet.

Not discouraged, Cyclohm fires a second Signal Beam. This time it doesn't nab the critical hit though, and the attack does noticeably less damage, especially due to how tired Cyclohm is from its Draco Meteor last round. Cradily doesn't back down either, unleashing another Earth Power that shreds what was left of the substitute. Satisfied, Cradily goes back to chomping on its Leftovers to regain more HP.

The round is over, but the sandstorm in the arena shows no signs of going away! Is there a malfunction in the arena, or is it just bizarre luck? Anyways, Pwnemon seems to have gotten an even bigger long term advantage this round, and Cradily is in much better condition than Cyclohm to boot. Both trainers are able to blind switch this round though, so who knows what will happen next round...

This time, both trainers recall their Pokemon. LouisCyphre recalls Cyclohm for Togekiss. Togekiss unfortunately gets hit by the Stealth Rock trap upon entry, but it's still in better shape than Cyclohm. Pwnemon sends out Abomasnow this round, and all at once the sandstorm stops and a very unnatural hailstorm starts. Togekiss sure is a pain to go up against, but Abomasnow makes the best out of the situation by using Ice Shard to deal good damage before Togekiss can strike it with Air Slash. The Ice Shard didn't do all that much, but it's better than the 0 damage Abomasnow would have done from the inevitable flinch. Togekiss did a lot with its attack, but its still at a disadvantage because of the entry hazards and hail damage.

Taking complete advantage of Abomasnow's shit typing, Togekiss then unleashes a Fire Blast to fry Abomasnow and all the surrounding plants in the arena. Rude. However, Abomasnow does something even worse, and uses an incredibly powerful Blizzard+Sheer Cold to flash-freeze the entire arena. That seriously can't be good for all the plants in the room. It looks like even Togekiss is suffering from a light freeze. That's really unlucky, and really ironic. The hail drops down on Togekiss some more, and the unlucky thing can hardly stay conscious.

In a slight change of luck, the hail stops falling right before Togekiss passes out, and rain takes its place. Still, Togekiss is in terrible condition, and due to the Stealth Rock hazard it won't be able to switch out and back in without fainting. Can Lou turn this situation around?

Tomohawk looks to spin away the Stealth Rock, but before it can act Ludicolo swiftly attacks with Fake Out, causing Tomohawk to flinch. I think Pwnemon's goal for this round is to stop Tomohawk from removing Stealth Rock. And that could be easy or hard, depending on what Lou plans to do this round. Either way, Ludicolo is not a Pokemon to take lightly in the rain, as not only is it incredibly fast due to Swift Swim, but it also recovers HP with Rain Dish.

Taking advantage of the falling rain, Ludicolo floods the field with Surf. I don't think the plants need that much watering, especially with it already raining out. Tomohawk, sopping wet, flaps its wings to whip up a massive Hurricane that does incredible damage to Ludicolo and everything else in the room. It even leaves Ludicolo severely confused, though to be honest Ludicolo has always had on a confusing expression.

Despite the confusion, Ludicolo manages to attack successfully due to its Own Tempo. It shoots an Ice Beam at Tomohawk for some good damage. However, Tomohawk just shrugs it off and unleashes a second Hurricane. This time, the pet store in the back is almost demolished, and Ludicolo looks very weakened. I don't think it can take another blow like that.

At the round end, the rain doesn't look like it's going away. Both of the Pokemon on the field don't seem to mind this, but I don't know how much longer this matchup could last. Pwnemon did manage to keep Lou from removing the pesky Stealth Rock, however Lou managed to deal an impressive amount of damage to Ludicolo.

Pwnemon quickly recalls the weakened Ludicolo and sends Abomasnow back out. Lou, on the other hand, just stands quietly. It appears that he's leaving Tomohawk in. Both Pokemon are fairly weakened at this point, and I'm betting at the end of the round one of them will faint. What do I know though?

Abomasnow is weakened, but it uses Endure to brace itself for the inevitable super effective attacks. However, Tomohawk sees through this and creates a Toxic gas to badly poison Abomasnow. This will bypass the Endure, but will Tomohawk be able to finish off Abomasnow before it is finished off itself?

The two Pokemon then clash in a war of temperatures. Tomohawk creates a Heat Wave to deal impressive damage, but Abomasnow then pulls a 360 and uses Blizzard to chill the arena. Tomohawk isn't done though, and fires a second Heat Wave. Abomasnow barely hangs on and uses Blizzard once more to deliver the final blow, and Tomohawk faints! But, as soon as the blow is dealt, Abomasnow faints from the poison coursing through it.

What a crazy round! Both trainers are now down one Pokemon. As the arena changes from hail to rain, what will they both send in next?

With both Pokemon fainted, the trainers send out more Pokemon. Pwnemon goes back to Ludicolo, while Lou sends out Cyclohm again. This is a nostalgic matchup, but with both Pokemon weakened and a different weather condition than the initial matchup, who will have the advantage now?

Arena: Rain

Ludicolo has the speed advantage in the rain, and it tries to use that to its advantage. Using Dive, it hides under the water and then attacks Cyclohm. However, Cyclohm was prepared for this and instead uses a mighty Thunder+Thunder Wave combination to deal damage to Ludicolo and paralyze it! Ludicolo recovers HP using Rain Dish, but at this point any decently powerful attack will KO it, and it can no longer use Dive to avoid opposing attacks...

Resigned to its fate, Ludicolo weakens its opponent with a final Ice Beam. It performs the last spin of its dance before Cyclohm uses Thunderbolt, where Ludicolo faints.

What a change of pace! The gym leader, who seized a very early advantage, is now down 2-3. The weather also seems to be changing up, turning to sun for the first time this match. I wouldn't count Pwnemon out though. Even though it seems as though he's losing, he's still easily got the advantage in HP, and can still choose his final Pokemon.
