[ELECTRIC] Leader Dogfish44 vs Challenger Birkal

Welcome to the HMS Tesla. Today we will be witnessing a battle between Leader dogfish44 of the Electric Gym and his challenger, Birkal, leader of the fighting gym when he isn't off fighting other leaders. Myself? I am your humble host, referee, and provider of snark for the event. Now, let us go over the rules for the match.

Format: 4 v 4 Gym Doubles (Challenger brings 4, Leader brings 7)
DQ Time: 2 Days
Banned Moves: -
Chills: 5 Per Pokémon
Recoveries: 2 Per Pokémon
Arena: HMS Tesla
Switch: OK
Items: ON
Abilities: ALL
Substitutions: 2 per Pokémon
Mega Evolutions: OFF

And, of course, your arena:

Arena: HMS Tesla
Field Type:
Electric, Water
Complexity: Moderate
Format: Doubles

It had always been interesting, the way in which Gyms come and go. Indeed, it was only 10 years ago when it would've been odd for anyone to consider Castelia City hosting the Electric Gym, but it was now. The HMS Tesla stands proudly in the port, although it normally sails a mile away from the port for the purpose of battles. The ship is a fairly standard ship, from the Falklands era. It has been fitted to accommodate battles, and notably on the main deck you can see what appears to be a giant crown - 4 golden arches curve around to support a giant gemstone above the deck.

Entering the ship, you immediately enter what appears to be a relatively fancy restaurant, quite busy. Looking around, there appears to be a window viewing the arena directly, as well as several plasma screens showing the currently empty arena. As you look around, you're greeted by a man in yellow and black attire.

"Hello there, welcome aboard the HMS Tesla. Are you here for the restaurant or the gym? The Gym? Well, this is special, the guests tonight will get a lovely show. We'll probably be ready to battle in about half an hour or so, so until then feel free to sit down and order a coffee."

Indeed, the ship does get rather full, and as the sun sets the ship begins to move out to sea. As you finish your coffee, the man returns - at this stage, you're fairly certain this is the gym leader. You're beckoned outside, and see the arena is stationed below the crown shape. However, you can't take in the beauty before the leader speaks again...

"Emolga, give us some light will ya!"

An Emolga pops out of the leader's Pokéball, and sends a small shot of lighting at the gem in the centre of the crown. It absorbs the electricity and lights up, revealing itself to actually be a giant ThunderStone. Impressive...

"Now then, a few things before we begin. Whenever you send out a Pokémon this giant rock will zap the item. Don't worry about it, it'll be perfectly safe. It just prevents it from being a drag for when your team is moving around. We also have plants and grass available on the arena as you should see, not to mention the small amount of water that surrounds this ship. You'll also note that this ship, whilst much of it has been replaced and altered, is still of British origin and has brought the weather along with it..."

The leader clicks his fingers, and on cue a light rain smothers the arena.

"Finally, good luck, and make sure you provide a good show!"
  • All Pokémon who benefit from the item ThunderStone instantly gain the effect.
  • No Pokémon is treated as encumbered.
  • During "Clear" weather, a light rain falls, which acts as normal rain, except with only ±1 BAP on Water/Fire Moves
  • There is no restriction on natural substances (Natural water, Grass, Rocks, etc.) to attack with.

And unlike the humor of the British, this ship is far from dry.

Now, let us introduce our competitors. Or, me introduce them. "Us" implies you have some involvement in this match beyond sitting there looking at the screen and maybe ordering. This is not the case.

dogfish44 is an extremely old user as well as one of the three original leaders still around. He has more wins than just about anyone, as well as five of them for every loss. Gen VI did not smile upon him, but it did not hurt him as much as some other leaders and he is still a force to be reckoned with. Pay special attention to his Emolga. It hits three of Birkal's Pokemon for super effective damage, is immune to Earthquake, and is greatly boosted by some of the arena's effects.

On the other side is Birkal. As a challenger, he has one badge--his own--putting him well beneath the curve of challengers who usually come from the Tesla victorious. However, his team is far from standard for this gym as it contains not a single ground type. It even only contains one electric resist. It appears as if he is banking on the arena's buffs being minor enough to make the fight one of pure skill and capitalize on the indirect weaknesses of electric types. Or something. More probably, he did not have a ground type. Pay special attention to his Keckleon because it is overpowered as f it's unique combination of abilities will likely give it the ability to gain ground stab, an electric resist, or whatever else is required.

Let's do this.

Now imagine a coin sailing through the air. Imagine that dogfish44 was supposed to send out first on heads. Imagine watching it hit the ground, spin for some time, and then spin some more as dubstep music plays in the background for no discernible reason. Now imagine a phone booth randomly appearing in the arena as a Terminator fights with some dudes in black who can dodge bullets. Pretty awesome, right? In the fight, the coin is lost permanently in time. Which, as every gentleman knows, means it came up heads.

Because logic.

Leader dogfish44 sends out his Pokemon with items, Birkal sends out his Pokemon and items and orders, Leader dogfish44 orders.

Round One: Electric Blue

The ocean... it's beautiful. I can hardly describe it, but it's nothing like I have ever seen before. The ship itself is almost as large as Umber, my hometown. The trainers and leaders are busy eating, drinking, and preparing for the spectacle.

They don't seem to realize that it will send them all to Hell. Or at least, I think it will.

But let's ignore that for a moment. Our combatants are ready. The leader gazes across the field and deploys two yellow Pokemon, roughly the same shade as most other electric types. It's not quite process yellow, but it's close. One is a dragon I am not familiar with that rises high above the field, snapping its three heads out like a Dodrio. The other is actually mostly green with a yellow underbelly that designates its true type. I do not recognize it either. Serpentine Pokemon are good at Baccer. I don't know how they hold up in battling.

The challenger, once again with a strange shade of yellow hair, deploys his Pokemon. One is a towering brown Pokemon holding concrete pillars. He looks stronger than a Machamp, if that is even possible. From his coloration I assume he is a fighting type. The other Pokemon is a relatively normal Venusaur. I have seen one fight before. It was really good. If the challenger's is anything like the one I saw, the leader is in for a very rough fight.

The round begins. Venusaur lashes out at the snake Pokemon with a vine, ensnaring it and running it over its body. The snake fights and eventually escapes, but the Venusaur picked off the belt it had draped over its body in the process. It looks like it will be fighting without an item. The dragon rears back two of its heads and roars with the third as the wind picks up into a bitter gale. The worst of it forms a single funnel cloud that rapidly races across the stage straight into the fighting type. The wind assails it, but it holds firm and steps through it one meter at a time. The dragon panics and picks up the pace, but the Pokemon keeps coming until with a final burst of speed it charges the dragon and slugs it with a fist glowing white. A handful of pale ice crystals stay on the dragon's torso after the Ice Punch lands. Newly freed from the Venusaur's grip, the eel moves to assist its partner and zaps the fighting type with a weak jolt of electricity. While it does not appear to do any damage, the fighting type's muscles visibly lock from the attack and it barely manages to keep its hands on its pillars. It looks like it is paralyzed now.

Seeing his target's focus change, the Venusaur switches to assailing the dragon. He gargles for a moment before spewing a spray of toxins across the entire arena, soaking the battlefield in purple gunk and covering the electric dragon in a coating of the sludge. It does not look happy at the attack, but nonetheless he keeps up his furious barrage of wind at the nearby fighting-type. Bolstered by the stirred air currents, the eel jumps high into the air while a frustrated, paralyzed, and battered brown Pokemon watches. Fortunately for it, the dragon's mighty gales mess up the eel's reentry and it crashes off to the side without harming its target.

The dragon's mighty windstorm continues to crash into the brown Pokemon as Venusaur readies himself for another attack. It fires off a blast of vines and seeds at the newly grounded snake, causing it to cry in pain as its life force and nutrients are sapped into the grass-types body. He really did not need the healing, but the attack still did some damage to the electric eel. But, it picks itself up and leaps into the wind, using it as a means to get significant aerial power and slam into the brown-Pokemon with full force, nearly knocking it out with the hit. But, the brown Pokemon still manages to launch one last Ice Punch at the dragon, dealing even more damage with its resolve to fight through the paralysis.

At this time, it is unclear who is ahead, but I believe the leader has a slight advantage. The dragon is worn down from such a long usage of a single powerful attack, and it is injured from the three attacks it took, but it is far from out of the fight. The snake has taken some damage and used some energy, but even without its item it is in a good position. Venusaur is unharmed, but has not been doing as much damage as I expected and has expended a bit of energy. The fighting-type is very close to fainting and will likely not last much longer at all with its paralysis.

I will now send things to Gela for the next round. In the meantime, Leader dogfish44 will order followed by challenger Birkal.

OK, so let's try again...

"Hmm... need a slightly different action set now, but I feel that we can still stand our ground as is. Emolga @ Everstone and Electivire @ Expert Belt will still come out to play."

With our updated standings, will you counterswitch this time?

"Well then... let's continue to see where this takes us!"

"Wait, you're seriously using me in a Gym Match? Been a while..."

Emolga: Discharge ~ Acrobatics (Venusaur) ~ Acrobatics (Venusaur)
IF Conkeldurr uses Endure, THEN Encore (Conkeldurr) on the first instance
IF Conkeldurr uses Mach Punch in a Combo, THEN Quick Attack + Aerial Ace (Conkeldurr)

Electivire: Psychic (Conkeldurr) ~ Ice Punch (Venusaur) ~ Psychic (Venusaur)
IF Conkeldurr uses a Protective/Evasive action, AND non-consecutive THEN Feint (Conkeldurr)
IF Venusaur has Double Team clones AND NOT Action 1, THEN Discharge
IF Conkeldurr KOed, THEN Redirect to Venusaur

Not completely confident here, but given the circumstances this is probably close to my best shot.

Should I flavor? Yes. Am I really busy this week? Yes. Is the melee kind of killing me flavor wise? Yes. So instead of flavor you get a short run-down from a person who knows nothing about strategy. Birkal knows that he can't keep either of his mons alive so he goes for one monster of a combination. It does a ton of damage, but he does ultimately lose both of his Pokemon. But, both of the one's dogfish had are now relatively low on HP, leaving Birkal's cleanup crew to finish things. But, he is now facing down four Pokemon with just his two. Granted, dogfish's full team is locked now, but I still can't see this ending well for the challenger since he's ordering first next round and dogfish's team isn't unhealthy enough to make ordering first a breeze.

irc had no real idea how Helping Hand+Helping Hand worked, so it will be interpreted as x4.

To make a long story short, I am very late and Birkal is very screwed. Electrivire endured, which immediately made me wonder why Birkal was focusing moves on the deader target without KO or Endure subs, but whatever. He's still playing this better than I would have. Kecleon's Fake Out was trolling and powerful, but it still could not stop Gallade and Emolga from trading blows, with Emolga coming out of the exchange with more damage dealt. Like a boss. Then things go from bad to worse due to a Knock Off and another Acrobatics, while Birkal's moves are not quite as effective. And then lucky paralysis HAX and a powerful Discharge/Acrobatics kills Gallade and leaves Birkal in a very, very tight spot. It's entirely possible that dogfish 4-0's this now. It's one of those matches. Like most matches in this gym.

Cyclohm used the power of the weather to strike down a thunderbolt upon Kecleon that did some damage, although the lizard's awesome mental defenses and neutral typing prevented it from taking too much damage. Eelektross fared far better, striking it with a ghostly blow that not only caused him pain but removed the lizard's item. Then the poor guy decided he hated being ganged up on and fired off a relatively weak bolt of ice at Cyclohm, his skin turning translucent as he did so.

And then he gets hit for super effective from both sides as Cyclohm shoots a rock "from its gem" (quoth the DAT) and Eelektross demonstrates its ability to leech life force... by punching things. I don't get it either. A weak punch is all Kecleon can muster in response.

Until such a time, please take the time to have a meal whilst the next battle on the HMS Tesla takes place - I believe I have another Gym Leader to fight, and the lobster is delicious. Also, don't forget the complimentary bottle of wine that anyone who battles on this ship is gifted. And until you return to fight me, au revoir!"
