Description: The arena is a cave in a desert with smooth sand floor. There are several lights designed to pierce the disguises of Pokémon and there is an opening in the roof that allows sunlight to beam down on the arena. The sunlight can be overridden with sandstorm (or rain and hail with the appropriate weather rock) but when that disappears, then the sunlight comes back. The sandy floor allows for Pokémon to dig through with ease and there are also traces of Ampersandium in the arena, with Nature Power calling the strongest of "and" moves: Land's Wrath (which is also slightly stronger here).

Mechanics:

• Nature Power calls Land's Wrath and Land's Wrath has its BAP increased by one (1). Secret Power has a 30% Chance to lower the foe's Speed by 1 Stage.
• Default Weather is Sun. When the effects of a weather effect expires, then it goes back to sunlight.
• The mixture of sand and dirt makes Dig easier to execute and gain height on attack, reducing its Energy cost by 2 and enabling the user to hit a Levitating target irrespective of Size Class.
• Pokémon cannot have their typing altered through any means, while Double Team and Illusion have no effect. The sunlight shines so bright that alongside the specific lights, they expose all disguises.
• No Natural Grass
• No External Water
• Rain and Hail require their respective weather rocks to summon.

Summary: Sun, none of this disguise/protean/uncompetitive crap, L&'s Wrath, easy dig!

The soft sand hampers movement slightly, but probably would not affect the battle. Maxim's team is nimble enough to navigate them without undue effects, and IAR - well, we're talking the Gym Leader in his home turf. I was wearing shoes, but I decided to just discard them - the Sun outside is baking the sands, but at least the cave shades the place enough to make it only lukewarm.

Arena: Ground Gym The Not Useless​

Always forcing the challengers on their back foot while on his home turf, IAR quickly spotted the common characteristic on Maxim's team - unintentional as it may seem - and decided to bench King Odin. Queen Adin came out the field instead, crowing with the ferocity of a scorned female. Hell hath no fury, and mercy be on anyone in Maxim's team.

The first "anyone" turned out to be Alurani the Roserade. Utilitand the Fidgit started out with a wave of its many hands, glowing snow-white to fan the Icy Winds down at Maxim's team, slowing them down. Going for the long haul, Maxim orders Alurani to lay down Spikes, but IAR simply had Utilitand removing them by the next moment with a Rapid Spin. Queen Adin, however, played no part in the tricks and treats. Instead, she launched Flamethrower after Flamethrower at the self-proclaimed Rose Knight, venting her burning jealousy at an opponent whom, in her mind, could have stolen her mate if given the slightest chance. Nora certainly did not help - she subconsciously wanted Alurani to be taught a lesson for being so self-righteous, and by using her Psychic attacks, the Volcarona manipulated Adin to solely target her teammate instead!

And so, with the Helping Hand of Utilitand, the Sunny weather, and Sheer Force Life Orb brokenness, the queen torched the knight out of battle after Digging down to avoid the Draining attacks from both Alurani and Nora.

Opting for another outspeed-and-hit tactic, Utilitand blows another sneeze across the cavern, building up the Icy Winds to slow down Aht and Nora. Tormeldon remained anchored to the ground, however, minding his own business until Aht, worried about him not being into the battle, started Slapping him repeatedly across the face.

Boy, was that the wrong thing to do.

Stung at the indignity, Tormeldon emitted an angry low, and Utilitand added to the chaos by chucking Rocks all over the place. Nora, alarmed at all the boulders, desperately tried to push them back with a whirlwind of flames, further obstructing the view of everyone in the arena. It wasn't until the flames died out that IAR's team stopped the barrage, and the smoke and dust cleared to see Nora fainted in the midst of rocks. IAR defends his badge successfully with a flurry of blows. Aht and Niki did a very human thing, that caused IAR to stop in his tracks. The two Pokemons are holding their short paws up by their heads, just as someone would when they surrender. IAR may not know Maxim's Pokemon the way their original Trainer does, but a quick look at their faces makes it obvious that neither was attempting to get the guard down on IAR's Pokemons - just simple, resigned surrender.

Maxim's face shows a mix of emotions so thick, that it seems indecipherable. He must have wanted to continue on for the sake of his pride, but his love for his Pokemons must be arguing with himself every step of the way, too.
