5th Gen Sandstorm (no dream world)

Introduction

From the day I first started competitive battling I knew I wanted a weather team. My choice was pretty simple. I automatically knocked off a sunny day team simply because hardly any good pokemon benefited from it. Then I thought of a rain dance team. I wanted to have an unlimited supply of weather, so although a lot of pokemon benefit from rain, they aren't too good in Ubers. That left me with sandstorm, and hail. Hail seemed like all the pokes who benefited from it were UU, and I didn't want to lead with a snover because quite frankly, it sucks. That meant I had to use sandstorm.
Thought Process
(I created this while creating the team. I wanted to make the thought process while it was relevant in my mind. I make an attempt to make it look all past tense, but there are parts that were obviously written at different times.)
There are 2 OU leads that can set up an unlimited sandstorm. Tyranitar, and Hippowdon. I chose Tyranitar because it can be more of an attacking force. Hippowdon is sort of limited to the QuakeEdge combo (granted it is a great combo) while Tyranitar has many more options.

Now onto the rest of the team. There were so many pokemon that took no damage from sandstorm to choose from. I could have gone with:
Forretress
Empoleon
Scizor
Gliscor
Aerodactyl
Hippowdon
Rhyperior
Magnezone
Skarmory
Shuckle

I wanted to keep good balance. I decided to go with Forretress, Empoleon, Gliscor, Aerodactyl, and Magnezone. Forretress to get rid of entry hazards while setting them up himself, Empoleon to sweep, Gliscor to stall break, and even get a late game sweep, Aerodactyl for a speedy late game sweeper, Magnezone to trap the dreaded steel type and eat them with HP fire.

It was a solid team, but I had a huge fighting weakness. I decided to drop my Forretress, because my team wasn't hurt too badly by entry hazards, and they really didn't need the spike support, and replace him with a CS Gengar. I choice scarfed him because I was too tired of being out sped by a CS poke, then dying due to its frailty.

One day I decided that the team needed a wall. I didn't want to go back to Forretress for the job because I knew that a certain Pokemon could do much better. Shuckle! He walls everything. His only problem is steel types that he can't toxic, but he can knock off all the other team’s items regardless of typing. I needed to drop a poke for him, so I decided to let Gliscor go. He was better than Aerodactyl after he set up, but he usually got killed before then.

After looking at my team I realized that I had three rocks, a ghost, and two steels. If I added one rock I could have a team legal as a gym leader. Not necessarily mono, but close enough. After looking at my options, Rhyperior was the only rock type that made any sense at all. That was the easy part, the hard part was choosing who to drop. All three of the remaining three non-rocks helped the team a lot. I needed to keep Gengar because without him the fighting weakness is just unbearable. Empoleon and Magnezone, however, both pulled off sweep after sweep for me. Empoleon somewhat got rid of my steel weakness, and could dominate grounds if he has the chance, but Gengar could take grounds too. Magnezone got rid of my steel weakness permanently, so I decided to keep him over Empoleon, but I am willing to change that.

So here WAS my completed team:
Tyranitar__Aerodactyl__Magnezone__Rhyperior__Gengar__Shuckle

The team worked wonders. Granted the team was much better without Rhyperior, but in the mono tourney that me and my friends had, I needed him. After the tourney (that I won) ended, I decided to make it into more of a competitive battling team. That meant I didn’t need all of those rocks. First to go was obviously Rhyperior. He just hindered my team. He just sat there, and every once in a while, if he had a chance to get a rock polish up, he could go berserk, but he rarely had a chance to shine, so he was dropped, and replaced with Empoleon.
Later, after FINALLY coming to the conclusion that Gengar isn’t the best ghost anymore (I love Gengar a lot) I had to drop him. Obviously he was dropped for the best option of Rotom on a sandstorm team… ROTOM-H. His overheat allowed him to obliterate any pesky steals, his ghost typing allowed him to survive fighting moves, and ground moves were avoided through levitate.

My final change that came directly from not being a mono-rock team was getting rid of Aerodactyl. As many of you will probably say, my team has a huge Blissey weakness. Granted Shuckle can neuter a Blissey (if Blissey’s could be male) with encore, but he can’t do much after that. I decided to go with a variant of Gliscor that I created specifically to use Blissey as set-up fatter. Turn 1 use torment. Take the 100 damage from Blissey’s seismic toss. Turn 2 use SD or RP depending on what variant you want (I chose SD because I like the hard hits, and it bluffs a serious sweep, which scares a lot of people into bringing out flying types). Turn 3 use roost. Turn 4 Blissey will probably switch out after learning it can’t do anything, so you use stone edge, earthquake, or U-Turn, depending on the variant you want. I personally use earthquake because it smashes Blissey hard if it stays in, and if it switches out to something that scares me, I can always switch out into somebody else who can resist it, or simply pose a serious threat.
So my team, ironically enough, had an earthquake, with the only surviving members being Tyranitar, Magnezone, and Shuckle. Fear not however, because with the release of Pokemon Black and White, a new asset was given to this team. Arguably the best asset in a sandstorm, Excadrill. With double speed in the sand, his speed reaches just about 600! Combine that with a 405 attack, and you have yourself a very potent sweeper. Not to mention the fact that it learns swords dance. It will more than likely force switches just based off of its epic stats alone. That gives it a free swords dance, which leads to an obvious sweep. The only Pokemon the Quake-Edge combo are Breloom, Torterra, and Verizion. Luckily, Excadrill learns X-Scissor, which is normal effective against all of them. A whopping 810 attack after SD should be enough to take out any of these guys, and he won’t need to worry about being out sped either. All in all, Excadrill is a perfect sweeper.
The tougher question was again, choosing who to get rid of. Tyranitar, Shuckle, Rotom-H were there to stay. I had to choose between Magnezone, Empoleon, and Gliscor. I liked my Gliscor set because it really messes up Blissey. I will be willing to get rid of him considering Excadrill has 331 HP, plenty to survive a silly seismic toss, and he could even get a swords dance up, but being left with only 131 HP after a KO on Blissey is not entirely a win (granted he will probably be able to sweep the rest of any team anyway). That small difference is why I decided to keep Gliscor. That put me right back where I started… Magnezone vs. Empoleon. This choice, however, is much easier now than it was before. Now I have Rotom-H, thus a much smaller steel weakness. It still might be lingering without Magnezone, but Empoleon could probably handle everything Rotom-H can’t (e.g. Heatran).
Another EPIC Pokemon to come from Pokemon Black and White is Golurk. With an amazing ghost-ground typing, it can take fighting moves like a champ. Granted it doesn’t have the ground immunity, but the excellent stats do more than make up for it. Over 124 attack, and 80’s on both defenses, this guy is a tank. Quite obviously I decided to replace Rotom, because they both have the same exact job, except Golurk does it.
The final change I made to my team was moving Gliscor up to the lead slot. He can set up rocks, then U-Turn out into T-Tar, or be used as death fatter to get in T-Tar. I decided to make him the lead because he was only used for countering Blissey, but with Golurk’s ghost typing, seismic toss doesn’t affect him, thus he can counter Blissey himself. That also freed me up to let Gliscor play super staller at the end of a game. With 30% evasiveness in sand, he can force a few misses, ending all chances of an epic comeback.

So here IS my team (until further notice)
Gliscor___Tyranitar___Empoleon___Golurk___Shuckle___Excadrill
TEAM OBJECTIVE
Bluff a standard lead with Gliscor by using SR, and then U-Turn out into T-Tar, setting up the sandstorm, and let the team go to work in the sand.

Gliscor @ Focus Sash Jolly 252 Atk/252 Spe/4 HP
Stealth Rock
Roost
U-Turn
Earthquake

This lead works wonders. Start off by using SR, unless I fear a OHKO. Then use U-Turn into Tyranitar unless I fear Tyranitar will get OHKO’d. If I do, I will let Gliscor die, but it is a priority to get T-Tar out, without harm. The team will still look standard when T-Tar gets sent out, which is why the team is so deadly. Despite playing a sandstorm team the whole team, the opponent doesn’t normally realize it until the Excadrill, or Shuckle are sent out.

Tyranitar @ Choice Scarf Jolly 252 Atk/252 Spe/4 HP
Earthquake
Stone Edge
Crunch
Pursuit

Classic CS set. It hasn’t been used much recently, so he gets a nice surprise factor. More importantly than the hard hits early, however, is just staying alive. If the opponent has a weather team himself, then I need to resupply the sandstorm as much as possible, thus he needs to stay alive. Also, he is an excellent late game sweeper, so if he stays alive, he can be a valuable attacker. (He’s won against many opponents when I was down 3-1)

Empoleon @ Petaya Berry Timid 252 SpAtk/252 Spe/4 HP
Substitute
Agility
Surf
Ice Beam

The original sweeper. He attacks before Excadrill comes in, leaving holes in the entire enemy team. I bring him in against something that I know I can force a switch against. I then use agility on the switch, and start subbing down against whatever he brings in. Eventually, I get down to 25% health, activating torrent, and the petaya berry, and he is ready to sweep. I am looking for a move to replace ice beam, because ice beam and surf doesn’t give me the coverage I am looking for. I tried HP electric, and I am willing to go back to it, but then I am left open against grass
types… my whole team is L

Golurk @ Leftovers Adamant 252 Atk/252 Spe/4 HP
Substitute
Rock Polish
Focus Punch
Shadow Punch

Golurk is my second favorite tool coming from fifth generation. I combined the sub-punch smogon set with the rock polish smogon set to come up with this sweeper. Basically, it comes in on one of the numerous choice banded fighting attacks in the game that are used to try to sweep my team. While the opponent is switching I set up a rock polish, allowing me to go to town. I substitute if I can, but if I can’t, I normally just attack or switch out. I like focus punch and shadow punch because they both get iron fist bonus, and shadow punch gets STAB. Also, together the two moves have perfect type coverage, hitting every pokemon in the game for at least normal damage. I am considering using quake-edge, because if I can’t get a substitute up, focus punch is pretty much useless. I considered replacing focus punch, but dynamic punch has a mere 50% accuracy, hammer arm lowers speed, and brick break does half as much damage as focus punch, so all of his physical fighting type moves kind of suck.

Shuckle @ Leftovers Careful 248 HP/ 252 Def/ 8 SpD
Toxic
Encore
Rest
Knock off

Shuckle is the best wall I know in a sandstorm. With monumental defenses (230 each) shuckle can wall out just about anything barring steels. I can’t name one move that OHKO’s it, but just in case, it has sturdy just to survive it. People think that toxic is the bread and butter of this set, but I believe it’s knock off. Knock off gets rid of very important items, such as choice scarves that are about to be tricked onto you, or leftovers of something that could wall you out. With the 6 % damage from sandstorm and toxic, Shuckle could take out just about anything.

Excadrill @ Aiming Mark Adamant 252 Atk/236 Spe/20 HP
Swords Dance
Earthquake
Rock Slide
X-Scissor

Ah Excadrill. The most overpowered pokemon in a sandstorm ever. With just enough speed to out speed +1 Azelf and Starmie in the sand, and a massive 810 attack after a swords dance, Excadrill is a perfect sandstorm sweeper. Quake-Edge with X-Scissor dishes at least normal effective damage to every pokemon in the game as long as you use an aiming mark, and that is just about a OHKO against everything. Basically I get this guy in against something he resists, or is immune against (i.e. Flygon outrage directed towards Shuckle) I am thinking about replacing X-Scissor with substitute for the 101 HP substitute, therefore setting up easily against Blissey. I was also considering using rapid spin, but there really isn’t a stealth rock weakness on this team, so I don’t need really need it.

Basically, what started off as a silly dream has become an all to real reality. This team can win against just about anything. I have only lost 4 matches with this team that did not involve untimely crits/parahaxes or even on confusahax. This team is really strong, and I need your help to make it great.

You have one water resist on your team and five weaknesses. Even without swift swim you can't always outspeed water types. Especially threats with priority (Banded aqua jet azumarill) wreck your team. I would consider adding a water resist to your team (or something immune such as vaporeon, jellicent, or gastrodon) and I would put a move that hits water supereffective on you empoleon. It seems to me that if rain is ever up, you can't win.

Tyranitar normally destroys the rain upon switching in. Also, I was considering replacing icebeam with HP electric on Empoleon, but that opens up a huge grass weakness. I will try jellicent over Golurk, but I will really miss the Focus Punches

I like your team. Im trying to make my own sandstorm team with tyranitar being my all time favorite pokemon. great job. d(^.^)
