<Sharpedo> [Karen] (F)

Nature: Lonely (+Attack, - Defense)

Type: Water/Dark

Water: Water STAB; Ignores arena restrictions on Water attacks that require an external water source. Evasive Diving reduced from 6 per action Energy Cost to 5 per action.
Dark: Dark STAB; ignores Attract and Confusion status entirely when using Dark-type damaging and non-damaging attacks.

Abilites:

Rough Skin (Passive):

When struck with a contact attack, this Pokemon's abrasive skin causes pain to the opponent, dealing 25% of the damage received to the opponent.

Speed Boost (HA UNLOCKED, Passive):
Pokemon with this ability increase their speed as the battle progresses, boosting it one (1) stage at the end of each round at the cost of 2% of their energy. This overrides the normal drop in stats that occurs at the end of each round (stats other than Speed are still affected).

Strong Jaw (Mega, Passive):

This Pokemon's massive jaws give it incredibly powerful biting attacks, increasing the BAP of all biting attacks by three (3) BAP. Full List: Bite, Bug Bite, Crunch, Fire Fang, Hyper Fang, Ice Fang, Poison Fang, Thunder Fang.

Welcome to round two of Battling 101! Today, we've had a few generous battlers lend us their Pokemon to help me teach some more advanced techniques used in ASB. Hands up to Birkal, Deadfox, and Matezoide, the latter of which was the only person who had a Sharpedo! Why's nobody have a Sharpedo?

Get to know your Pokemon before you order, and make sure to watch those movepools very closely! You'll want to look for dangerous moves like Endure, Encore, Counter, Mirror Coat, Stealth Rocks, and more. Make sure to cover moves that can turn the entire match on its head (Like Encore).

Secondly, make sure that the matchup you're in is good. You don't want to have your Tomohawk in on that Diancie, for example.

Now, lets get started!

@ Magmarizer

Make sure to use a good item and keep your options open. You can mega evolve, make sure to keep that in mind as well. Safe items like Rare Candy, Expert Belt, and Life Orb are always nice choices.

Huh, interesting. Let's see what you can do, Mr. Volco.
Volco @ Leftovers
All right then, start off with Stealth Rock, but Protect instead and push back actions if Magmortar Taunts you on the first round. Then, follow up with Earth Power and Earthquake.
Stealth Rock ~ Earth Power ~ Earthquake
If Magmortar Taunts on A1, use Protect and push back actions.
"...hmph."

The send out of Camerupt is expected, good call. Threatens Magmortar, and can set up Stealth Rocks early, which was a good plan because I have no hazard removal. Saving your mega evolution for Aggron is also wise, since it's basically the only thing beating Diancie without issues and it helps against Sharpedo. But... you forgot two major issues, and conveniently enough, you have two open subs. Always use all of your substitutions if you can!!! Very important!

First, note what happens when I taunt twice; you're not getting rocks and Magmortar's not taking damage for two whole turns. That lets me get a free switch out, and normally that wouldn't be too bad an issue, but Magmortar has Fire Spin. This lets Magmortar switch out for free while trapping your taunted, 4x-weak-to-water Camerupt. (However, Camerupt has very little to actually counteract Fire Spin, which is rather pathetic...)

One thing to note is that Leftovers is not the go-to item like it is in the OU or Battle Spot metagames. It's not very much HP recovery all things considered, and you really wanted to press offensive advantage. Rare Candy would have helped you more, since it boosts special attack and STAB bonuses.

The subs I would have chosen for this situation would be:
"If Taunt, then Earth Power."
"If P/E, then Stealth Rock the first instance, Roar the second instance."
"If Barrier when Camerupt would use Earthquake, than use Earth Power instead."

Note how Taunt is punished with an attack, so that Magmortar has less incentive to prevent Stealth Rocks with the threat of a Earth Power to the face. Also, Stealth Rocks is better in the substitutions, because it punishes the Magmortar for trying to prevent damage through Protect.

The situation is pretty hopeless, but you could have made it less so by using a combination on A2, such as Earthquake + Earthquake for as much damage as possible, or Rock Slide + Stealth Rocks, which bypasses Taunt and lets you set stealth rocks.

Remember your item choices, and to watch Sharpedo's movepool carefully. Sub for the most dangerous things you can find, and try to maximize the matchup you have. You want to put as much punishment on a good matchup as you can.

Woosh, is it? Break out that Rare Candy. It's time to style.
Woosh @ Rare Candy
"Oh boy oh boy oh boooooy! I'm so excited I almost wanna dance!"
Okay, then. Start with a 25 HP Substitute, throw some Stealth Rocks at the Sharpedo's side, and then end this round with Focus Blast. If you're Taunted before you can Stealth Rock, go with Aura Sphere instead. If Sharpedo Protects itself after Taunting, push back actions and chill out.
Substitute (25 HP) ~ Stealth Rock ~ Focus Blast
If Sharpedo Taunts where Woosh would Stealth Rock, use Aura Sphere. If Sharpedo Protects itself on A2, chill and push back actions.

First off, that Taunt sub is incorrectly written for what you intended. Right now, it works only if I taunt on A2. You want "If Tomohawk is Taunted A2, then use Aura Sphere." This checks for the status of being Taunted, rather than the move Taunt itself.

You should have just gone for as much damage as possible. Substitute does absolutely nothing for you, and in fact is a detriment since it's one less action of damage and spends 25 HP for what is essentially a Protect. Stealth Rock -- Aura Sphere -- Focus Blast would have been more effective and guarantees stealth rocks thanks to Prankster.

Lastly, you should have at least put something in that last substitution slot.

Focus Energy -- Ice Fang -- Ice Fang

Set up a Reflect, then combine Aura Sphere with Hurricane. Let's go all out!
Reflect ~ Aura Sphere + Hurricane
"Sure, buddy! I'll be up and at 'em before you can say righty-o!"

Small note before the round: Combos like that are VERY iffy and more often than not, will not be reffed as combinations. Typically with combos you want to use moves that naturally work well together (Such as Focus Punch + Fire Punch) or are the same move. If a combo is deemed infeasible, it's simply treated as two different consecutive moves. Your orders now do Reflect -- Aura Sphere -- Hurricane.

If you feel a combo might be infeasible but might be rejected, ask the referee before you finalize your orders.

Your use of Reflect is... odd, since Sharpedo has Focus Energy status, which means gauranteed critical hits, which means Reflect is entirely ignored for as long as Focus Energy is in effect.

You should have abused the blunder I made; Flying type Pokemon can hit Pokemon that are under Bounce or Fly no matter what. x3 Aura Sphere would have worked well.

If you're gonna take anything from this match, it should be "Use your substitutions."

I'm also gonna put in here that you should never use Metal Burst, or any of the other moves like it (Counter, Mirror Coat) on the first order. They're so easy to abuse that it's quite silly. I'd only ever advise using them in substitutions such as "If Low Kick, then Counter" or something similar.

Vesuvius, time to finish this!

@ Magmarizer

War Anvil , you're up to order.

So...yeah. Start out with Rock Polish, use Head Smash, and end with Stone Edge! If Magmortar Taunts you on action 1, however, stick with Rock Tomb. Oh, and if you're burned during action 3, end the round with Surf instead.
Rock Polish ~ Head Smash ~ Stone Edge
If Aggron is Taunted A1, use Rock Tomb A1. If Aggron is burned A3, use Surf A3.

"Heh, done and done. I guess..."

Yeah, I don't see a way to win this matchup ordering first either. Good game, though! Hope you learned a thing or two.

Overall, you did pretty well, for the level of skill you've developed so far. Some mistakes were made, but hey, you learn from those! Here are some of the big mistakes you'll want to consider:

- Once you lost the matchup with Camerupt and Magmortar, things went downhill because I could control the matchup throughout the battle. You should have punished Magmortar as hard as you could, in order to make Fire Spin less of a detriment. Use your most powerful attacks, substitute for the most dangerous moves first, and then substitute for defensive measures like P/E moves, in order to press your advantage. Generally, in Singles matches, you want to develop a lead early on, and expand that lead whenever you can. If you played the match well in the first round, you probably would have fallen victim to Fire Spin anyways, but you could have gotten into the Sharpedo matchup without being Taunted, or Magmortar taking a ton more damage.

- Make sure to make your substitutions as thorough as possible. Use em all up, and make sure they're not easily abused, like how I abused the Taunt substitution.

- Make sure you know the mechanics of the moves you're using. The Reflect blunder ended up losing you the matchup with Sharpedo, which Tomohawk does extremely well with.

- Use the best items available. Rare Candy, Expert Belt, or Life Orb would have let you deal even more damage with Camerupt.

I'll continue talking to you in PM. See you soon!
