Birijion [QC Approved 0/2]

  • Very good offensive typing it shares with only Breloom
  • resists SR
  • Ability to go either side of the spectrum with impressive Attack/Special Attack/Speed
  • Justice Heart raises its Attack if it is hit with a Dark-type move.

[SET]
name: Swords Dance
move1: Swords Dance
move2: Close Combat
move3: Stone Edge
move4: Leaf Blade/Substitute/Taunt
item: Life Orb/Leftovers
nature: Jolly
EVs: 4 HP/252 Atk/252 Spe

Set Description:
  • Very good offensive typing and speed
  • 91/72/129 defenses along with a plethora of resistances give it many chances to set up quite well.
Additional Comments:
  • Substitute can be interchanged for Leaf Blade, depending on how much Water/Ground-types threaten your team. Taunt removes Phasers, except Dragon Tailers.
  • Rock Polish can also be used in that slot.
  • Life Orb is risky with the weather, as you may be taking 16% per turn, but gives you the 30% boost. It's up to you whether or not it's worth it.
Teammates and Counters:
  • Heatran or Bulky Waters, other Pokémon that can take Fire and Ice-type moves.
  • Pokémon that lure Dark-type attacks, but not Pursuit.
  • Skarmory counters very well, being able to take a +2 Stone Edge and OHKOing with Brave Bird. However, Close Combat+Brave Bird recoil will kill Skarmory as well.
  • Wobbuffett can Encore/Counter and easily defeat Birijion.

[SET]
name: Calm Mind
move1: Calm Mind
move2: Giga Drain/Grass Knot
move3: Focus Blast
move4: Substitute/Taunt/Reflect
item: Leftovers
nature: Timid
EVs: 4 HP/252 SAtk/252 Spe

Set Comments:
  • Very good offensive typing and speed
  • 91/72/129 defenses along with a plethora of resistances give it many chances to set up quite well.
  • Reflect in the last slot softens physical threats to make setup easier.
Additional Comments:
  • Taunt allows you to remove Phasing threats except Dragon Tail.
  • Substitute forces switches.

  • Wobbuffett can Encore/Mirror Coat and easily defeat Birijion.

[Team Options]
  • Heatran or Bulky Waters, or really anything that can take Fire and Ice moves.
  • Pokemon that can take Flying moves, like Steel and Electric types, also come to mind.
  • Wobbuffett is good bait for Dark-type foes, can take Fighting moves aimed at Birijion, and gives free setup with Encore.

[Other Options]
  • Sacred Sword over Close Combat trades power for lack of Defense/Special Defense drop
  • Sword of Mystery in the last slot on the Calm Mind set allows Birijion to take down Blissey with the Special set.
  • Cheer Up allows it to go mixed, but is essentially an inferior SD or CM.

[Counters]
  • Wobbuffett, Super Effective Scarfers (Heatran, Rotom-h, etc.), Mewtwo, Deoxys formes, other Psychic-types, as well as Flying-types for the Calm Mind set

[Dream World]
  • Birijion does not receive an ability from the Dream World

No mention of a tankish set?

Birijion@Leftovers
Naive; 252 HP / 44 Def / 208 Spe

Reflect
Leaf Blade
Close Combat
HP Ice / Stone Edge / Taunt

It's typing gives it several great resists, including Water, Electric, Ground, and Rock, and this set takes advantage of that. It can take on non-LO Dory at +2 (except Return, I believe), and OHKO back with CC. It also checks the likes of Nattorei decently and its high speed means that it works nicely against Garchomp / Mence / Sazzy with HP Ice. It can toss up a quick Reflect to patch up its merely decent defense, and still is a great bulky water check thanks to that SpD and Leaf Blade.

Birijion does not learn Sword of Mystery... I think. It's kinda stupid cuz they're supposed to teach Keldeo the move, and they don't learn it themselves.

Does Holy Sword deserve a slash with Close Combat? Birijion has the defenses to survive revenge kill attempts from stuff like Starmie and Sazardora, so it seems like a worthy option to not have to lower defense every time you need your fighting attack. It's probably not worth it with Life Orb, but with Leftovers I know it works quite well.

Definitely Slash HP Ice on the Swords Dance set over something like Stone Edge. I'd much rather have the dual STAB attacks and HP Ice with Swords Dance personally. HP Ice gets rid of Gliscor, who would otherwise wall you all day. This actually would make an incredibly good lure for Doryuuzu, who is stopped by Gliscor as well.

Dragonite, Salamence, Latios, Latias, Garchomp, Gliscor, Electric Genie, Zapdos, Celebi. HP Ice really should be the only option in the last slot but I don't mind you giving AC mentions to what you have slashed currently.

I agree with ToF about slashing HP Ice on the SD set.

+2 Birijion can 2HKO any of the current onsite Gliscor sets (which all run speed) with Leaf Blade while carrying Leftovers. Are you sure HP Ice is worth it? Unless Gliscor has Aerial Ace I don't really see it being a problem.

^Considering that the majority of Gliscor now run Acrobat, HP Ice is well worth it. Besides, one exception isn't enough to disregard the other threats panamaxis listed.

First, you're looking at a DPP Gliscor spread. Most of them nowadays run a shit-ton defense for things like Doryuuzu. And second, almost every Gliscor carries either Aerial Ace / Acrobat / Ice Fang now for one reason or another.

Way faster, huge Sp. Def? Breloom really isn't any contest until it gets Technician.

Agreeing with HP ice getting a mention anywhere due to the prevalence of gliscor and other threats that would otherwise wall you.
Also, since this is a OU Analyses you should take out the Mewtwo mention in the counters section.

I think the Calm Mind set needs to be before the Swords Dance set. Lately, CM Birjion is extremely popular for its ability to destroy rain dance teams. Also, Hidden Power Ice really needs a mention on both sets.

just a formatting thing, there should be a space between the slashes. like "Leaf Blade / Substitute / Taunt" and not "Leaf Blade/Substitute/Taunt"; same with the nature and EVs

Hidden Power Ice + probably LO is worth a slash on the CM set. It takes out Latias, Salamence and most of the other stuff that resist your STAB moves. It seems to be standard on the CM set from what ive seen at the moment. It also turns Birijion into a semi SD Chomp check of sorts, though you still lose to Yache but w/e lol.
