Comedian and TV/Movie Star Bernie Mac dies at age 50

The Chicago Sun Times is reporting that comedian Bernie Mac died early Saturday morning, citing a close friend of the funnyman's family.​

Mac, 50, was being treated at Northwestern Memorial Hospital in Chicago from pneumonia. His publicist had repeatedly denied he was dying.​

Sun-Times columnist Stella Foster said she received a call from a family friend an hour after the "Ocean's Eleven" star was pronounced dead.​

"It brought tears to my eyes because Bernie Mac has always been my all-time favorite entertainer and comedian. It pains me to have to report that," Foster said.​

Last weekend, several Web sites erroneously reported the comedian's death, and the Sun-Times report could not be immediately confirmed.​

Mac also starred in his own TV show, "The Bernie Mac Show".

Mac is considered one of the true black comedians who paved the way for others. No need to agree with this if you don't want to though. There is no denying Mac, is one of the most successful stories in comedy, opening minor acts to starring in films / tv.

Mac has been nominated for 2 Emmys for his work in "The Bernie Mac Show".

Mac will be missed by all and especially me. Personally, when I was younger, I would always watch The Bernie Mac Show and laugh my ass off. Thanks Bernie, not only for making us laugh, but for bringing up a person's day.

Actor Bernie Mac's spokeswoman says he died from complications due to pneumonia, but a rare autoimmune disorder he battled for years may have played a role, experts say.
"It is uncommon for a healthy, middle-aged man to die from pneumonia," said Dr. Norman Edelman, chief medical officer of the American Lung Association.
"Usually there is an underlying factor - damage to the immune system of some sort."
Mac, 50, suffered from sarcoidosis, which causes inflammation of the body's tissues and small lumps known as granulomas to form.
While the disease can attack any organ, more than 90% of patients have lung damage.
"If sarcoidosis is mild, it is highly unlikely that it could have fatal complications for somebody with pneumonia," said Dr. Edelman who has never treated Mac.
"If his sarcoidosis was severe, it could be the case."
Mac had said his sarcoidosis went into remission in 2005 but it's unclear if it might have flared up again.
His publicist insisted last week his pneumonia was unrelated to sarcoidosis, but it appears she also understated the severity of his medical condition.
Sarcoidosis occurs primarily in adults 20 to 40 years of age, and is three times more prevalent in African Americans than in whites, according to the American Lung Association. New research has found that the condition peaks in patients over 50, especially in women.
"Immunosuppressive drugs for treatment of pulmonary conditions such as sarcoidosis could be a contributing factor [to Mac's death]," said Edelman.
"If Mr. Mac was on such drugs, there is a chance the sarcoidosis treatment might have exacerbated his pneumonia."

So it sounds like his weakened immune system as a result of his earlier case of sarcoidosis combined with the present case of pneumonia to worsen the situation. The drugs used to treat his earlier case of sarcoidosis could have also apparently collided with the pneumonia and made it worse.

I really didn't expect this to happen. I thought he was younger than 50, and still 50 is pretty young.
