With a slim lead, n10sit and his penguin squad wins the week, congrats!

This week, in order to commemorate checkmater's badging,we're gonna build around:

+

Mega Gardevoir in rain can be a nifty pick as it can deal with Dragon-, Water-, and Grass-types (except for Ferrothorn), all of which resist the powerful Water-type moves the rain archetype is known for. However, Mega Kangaskhan and Ferrothorn are issues that need to be dealt with.

[05:47] +Checkmater: basically garde rain is absolute fire

Deadline of building is on Saturday GMT noon!

For Gard rain i decided to go a really offensive route. Im not a big fan of damp rock as i feel it is too passive, so I went with specs. The damage output with specs is surprisingly good. For Gard I went with imprison for multple reasons. Imprison seems really stellar on offensive teams, especially ones with the nature of rain, as your opponents are restricted from using protect, which challenges their ability to gain momentum back. I went with Ludicolo as my rain sweeper. An Amoonguss switch in is nice, and water /grass is quite nice coverage. Terrakion is my ferro check and also my thundurus and Zapdos check. It also checks Kyube, which Ludi can struggle to deal with on its own. Taunt also soft checks trick room. Aegislash is another trick room check and way to beat opposing fairies, such as diancie. Lastly Thudnrus serves as speed control, a way to prevent trick room and also another diancie check. It also checks Talon which can do a lot of work to rain.

Team Building Process

1. Standard Gardevoir. (4th Move Slot yet to be decided)
2. Politoed. Like it more of a supportive role. First, get those Choice Scarfed Mons and Speed 100 Mons slowed down. Then, let Mega Gardevoir spam her Hyper Voice; this goes for other spammers in the team too.
3. Kingdra. Splash more spread moves. Leave no open space for opposing forces, and bring down the "Nuke" as needed. Roger.
4. Landorus-T. Continue to pursue the enemies. Charizard-Y, Diancie, Talonflame, Thundurus, etc... you name it.
5. Thundurus. Let no opponent have their way with speed and weather. Eliminate all so called wall (aka Steamy). (4th Move Slot yet to be decided)
6. Aegislash. Cause Big Moma is still a threat and needed a switch-in for Shrooms. Covers all other necessary coverage.

Revision

1. Wasn't satisfied with Kang and Ferrothorn matchup. Decided to give Gardevoir and Thundurus Focus Blast as of result.
2. Finish

When you use something as straightforward as Gard Rain teams will tend to look pretty similar after a while.

This team is meant to be a more of HO interpretation of the core. While Bulky Toed isn't really a "HO" mon it still works to set-up rain and scald things while slowing things down for Gard. Toed has Helping Hand for Kingdra's attacks as well as Gard's voice. Gard has encore to screw around with things. Kingdra and Talon are fairly standard. Lando is there to beat most steels and check Talon, Thund, etc. Serperior is the interesting choice here. I put it there over Ludi since I don't like using rain as a late game win con, but more as an early game breaker. I wanted a Grass that wasn't Ludi, and I wanted it to be fast outside of rain so serp fit the bill. HP Rock helps against Sun/Talon while Glare can paralyze most things (even Lando!) I also chose it over Thund because it helps just a little bit more with Lando when Rain is not up.

I decided to go for a semiroom route because Politoed is SHIT and the least shit set for Politoed imo is specs. Decided to use Omastar because it is a sicc mon and I've always meant to use it after qsns posted about it. But realistically, I didn't like how Talon weak it currently is since 0 bulk Poli is frail af so why not add Omastar lol. It's also slow so it works under TR :D. Obligatory Talonflame because Amoonguss is bad and it's even worse since I'm using TR lol. Went with Jolly Band so I can beat other Talons and Thundy 1v1. Goggles Aegi for extra insurance vs Amoonguss and so that I have an easy Kanga switch in even tho it doesn't really beat Kanga lol. Lando was my last mon cause I needed Intimidate for Garde and I kinda clicked x vs Volcanion.

checkmater said everything's good as long as i beat kanga and ferrothorn

I use specstoad cuz its does damage and has p good matchups vs lots of TR teams that mess up Kingdra. Speed tier for thundy in TW.

Moltres is a fire and it beats both Kanga and Ferrothorn. Was much better without Volcanion tho but alas. Tailwind is useful for specs politoed to hit first. speed to beat ada kang and wisp it to the punch. jolly kang can't ko. Spdef tanks t bolt from bulky thund.

Kingdra garde politoed cuz its garde rain, what else am I gonna use.

I use lando and rachi because they work on any teams. they also pressure kang p hard

weaknesses incluse stealth rock ferrothorn, volcanion, and zapdos that goes 5/5 on t bolt para full para

teams pretty bad tbh but at least it has a shitmon so i get creativity points :^)

Uhhhh I'm really tired.

Semiroom seemed cool because I wanted to try specs toed (same idea as DaD1). AV Scrafty provides Intimidate, beats ZardY, beats some steels, and provides Fake Out so it's kinda perfect. Talon beats Amoonguss and generally does cool things. Ferrothorn provided a Kang switchin, Steel-type, and Grass to the FWG. Then I wanted a Rock type because Talon was rough but I also wanted to complete FDS so Tyrantrum lol.

Garde outspeeds Bisharp and 2HKOs Kang I think. Toed lives Kang Return and outspeeds base 111s in Tailwind. Scrafty lives Keld SS. Ferrothorn has enough bulk for its subs to live the first hit of Kang PuP or Sucker and LO Thund Tbolt, rest in Atk. It also has Sub because lol no wisp for you idk speed control provides free turns it sounded fire. Tyrantrum has Hone Claws because fuck missing and outspeeds Scarf Lando-T in TW where it has a chance to do THIS: 252+ Atk Tyrantrum Head Smash vs. 4 HP / 0 Def Landorus-T: 280-330 (87.5 - 103.1%) -- 18.8% chance to OHKO and the team is good enough that you'll get the roll

So the idea around this team was to make a strong rain team that had good overall match ups with most of the metagame. I started with Politoed clearly since it automatically sets rain with it's ability Drizzle. I went with a bulky set that brings supportive options to the team with scald, icy wind and helping hand. Next I went for Kingdra as I think it adds more to a rain team then what Ludicolo can right now. Having a fast life orb draco meteor or muddy water is strong especially with helping hand support, and having disable gives it some nice options against things that have good match ups with Kingdra rain like Gardevoir and Sylveon. Next I added scarf Landorus-T as it helps with more of rains bad match ups. Namely sun and Mega Kangaskhan as the prime two cases as it can u-turn out of Mega Charizard Y when it sets sun so I can bring in rain safely. Landorus-T can intimidate Kangaskhans and is able to hit hard with earthquake and superpower. Now for the next role I believe a steel is required due to the handy resistances it provides for the team. I wanted the steel to be able to take mega Kangaskhan attacks, help improve my ferrothorn match up, give me a good answer to the most popular calm mind pokemon in the tier (naming Sylveon and Cresselia), and give me a direct answer to fairies. While still not compromising the team's type synergy. Something an option like Aegislash would do with it's dark and ghost type weakness. Next I added a way to deal with water types with Thundurus with it's stab electric type moves. I added safety goggles are my team is really weak to spore and having a safe switch is really useful. It allows Thundurus to bypass any rage powders so it can still spread status or have a free attack into a partner. Finally Mega Gardevoir makes it place on the team with having a fast strong spread move, which is giving me a way to hit things like dragons and Amoongus for good damage. Encore works well with in tandem with disable as it means I can theoretically lock my opponents into unfavourable moves, giving me a free turn to get off more damage.

I've had this team kicking around for awhile, a gardevoir rain team with a few interesting sets mixed in. The thing that sticks out at team preview is Krookodile, though every mon has something unique or interesting about their build barring ludicolo. The team has two "modes" or strategies (it's based off of a vgc team): supporting Mega Gardevoir, and rain offense.

Mega Gardevoir is two attacks calm mind, a really uncommon set but I needed gardevoir to be fast while taking a hit from Talonflame (which it does) while still having some offensive presence on the team. CM Gard is supported by Fake Out from AV Ludi and Rage powder from Amoonguss. Amoonguss is using Sludge Bomb over the standard Giga Drain for winning the Amoonguss mirror. Gardevoir is also supported by Tailwind Zapdos who carries Heat Wave to help vs Steel types, particularly Ferrothorn. Zapdos is EVd to outspeed Timid Volcanion/Jolly Breloom with the remaining EVs in special defense, but you probably want to add some extra speed creep. Gardevoir is also benefited by Krookodile's Intimidate and Krook's ability to check Steel & Fire types. Krookodile was chosen over Landorus-T for its better matchup against Aegislash, Gengar, and Bisharp. It's also really cool for knocking off Landorus-Ts Choice Scarf as it switches in, leaving Lando slower than Gardevoir without it's Scarf, or unable to take Hyper Voice as well without an Assault Vest. Lastly, Scarf Politoed assists Gardevoir against Heatran, Talonflame, and even Aegislash to some extent thanks to encore. Rain Dance is included as well to help against Mega Charizard Y. Politoed is EVd to survive a Return from Adamant Mega Kangaskhan and outspeed max speed Thundurus.

As for the rain "mode", obviously Politoed and Ludicolo are the focus here, with my Politoed being much more offensive than most builds. It's pretty easy to see how the weather focused games are played; Zapdos and Krookodile both have good MUs against Thundurus, and Amoonguss and Gardevoir can take care of Grass types, Rotom-Wash, and Keldeo. These Pokemon pave the way for Ludicolo and Politoed.

I can't find any replays against serious teams but I've used this team quite a bit, and it's a lot of fun so give it a try. This sort of team composition (something to distract at team preview + 4-5 creative builds) is my favourite way to do creative and non standard team building at a competitive level, which is why I submitted this team.

I decided to try something that I've tried a little in singles with this: Volcanion rain. Mega Gardevoir is just a generally stupidly strong attacker, and a lot of what it struggles with (Heatran namely) gets manhandled by rain anyway so I didn't focus too hard on it. Politoed+Ludicolo+Volcanion is just generally very scary to be put up against; I have opted to give Politoed Damp Rock because I felt that the entirity of the build benefitted much more from the increased duration of rain as opposed to Politoed's own longevity, and with the version that I did a small amount of playtesting with (Thunder Thundurus) this is definitely the case. Rain Dance is used over Icy Wind because the team gets a big headache from sun combined with it not really needing the speed control that much , so I felt that being able to use it as I expected Zard to come in would be handy. That said the lack of redirection can make this difficult depending on what your opponent has on the field as well as if they have pre-mega Zard in against you, so it's kinda whatever with that slot. Run Icy Wind if you want. Basic sets on Ludi and Volc; I wanted to maximise Ludicolo's power so I opted for a Life Orb variant, and I've just stuck to the pre-analysis for Volcanion for the most part; that said, Flamethrower does significantly more to Ferrothorn in the rain so I've decided to slash it in for people who don't care much about the lost spread coverage. I have also run a slightly faster variant than the one listed to outpace uninvested Cresselia and below, which is notable for it's ability to outpace adamant Azumarill to nail it with Sludge Bomb before it can use Knock Off. You can also run max speed to tie with adamant Breloom if you want, which is pretty nice as it makes it more threatening for slower Pokémon due to it outpacing a little more like that. Finally I just opted for double genie 'cause wynaut. Superpower on Lando is there to dent Ferrothorn and Mega Kangaskhan in case Volcanion cannot deal with the former and because the latter gives the team a headache. Thunder vs. Thunderbolt depends on if you want consistency or deadliness+high paralysis rate under rain at the cost of out-of-rain consistency., so I'll let you choose here.

Wanted to make a fun Mega-Gardevoir/Rain Team after I saw this week's prompt.

Previously I had used a team of Gardevoir/Terrakion/Zapdos/Scizor/Talonflame/Blastoise to top the DOU ladder a couple of weeks ago under the name "yurikago". Follow Me Blastoise was an excellent partner for M-Gardevoir, but in the context of a rain team it just doesn't quite fit.

Enter Electabuzz, Electabuzz has access to two of the best supporting moves in the Doubles metagame in Follow Me and Helping Hand. Electabuzz's Static also gives it the ability to cause repercussions for the opponents who attack it. Base 105 Speed and decent defensive and special attacking stats round out Electabuzz as a Pokemon. With the right board positioning, Electabuzz + Mega-Gardevoir can do quite the number on an opponent's team.

Politoed and Kingdra are staples of any Rain team. Icy Wind>Encore because I enjoy the utility it has in regards to supporting the whole team, rather than trying to set up a Disable combo w Kingdra.

Aegislash holds Safety Goggles to beat Diancie paired with Amoonguss, while Terrakion checks Kangaskhan/Ferrothorn and Charizard.

Imprison is a nice move to have on Gardevoir, because this team really hates Hyper Voice spam.

I think this team is quite fun to use, hope you enjoy ^_^
