This week, we have Checkmater and GreenGogoatttt tied at 5 votes apiece. This leaves me as the one to break the tie and... I'm voting Checkmater!

Thus, Checkmater wins this week!

This week, we're building around...

Mega Metagross! With its strong matchups all around thanks to its Speed and typing in addition to its usability as a strong attacker, Mega Metagross stands as a good anti-meta pick in this metagame. Its handy matchups against the likes of Mega Salamence, Tapu Lele, and Tapu Bulu among others gives it a good amount of viability, while it can also be a good answer to most threats all around such Mega Charizard Y and Hydreigon thanks to its high Speed, which lets it dictate matchups depending on the situations. Mega Metagross also boasts good bulk, letting it function as a handy pivot if need be. Its coverage still leaves it walled by most Steel-types, however, and its offensive prowess can only go so far and other Megas can be much more destructive.

Deadline of building on Saturday GMT noon-ish!

Here's a team I have working around which has yielded me decent enough success. It's build around a gravity core I posted in effective cores and deviates from the more common metagross archetypes as tries to utilise some of the underutilized mons.

Team:
Metagross-Mega @ Metagrossite
Ability: Tough Claws
EVs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Jolly Nature
- Meteor Mash

EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Timid Nature
IVs: 0 Atk
- Earth Power
- Focus Blast
- Hidden Power [Ice]

Amoonguss @ Payapa Berry
Ability: Regenerator
EVs: 252 HP / 172 Def / 84 SpD
Relaxed Nature
IVs: 0 Atk / 0 Spe
- Rage Powder
- Spore
- Sludge Bomb

Volcanion @ Leftovers
Ability: Water Absorb
EVs: 252 HP / 156 SpA / 100 Spe
Modest Nature

- Hydro Pump
- Ice Beam
- Snarl

Description :
  • First of all, Mega-Metagross + lando-i form a terrifying offensive core only stopped to an extent by flying types with good secondary typing like steel/electric/fire. So, incomes gravity on metagross which is just great imo. It might sound gimmicky, but the sheer power lando-i has, it's worth it. Gravity allows it to spam earth power as much as it wants rather than relying on coverage, also it clears celesteela,char-y etc for metagross.
  • Next up I felt what would be an alright answer to tapus, while still giving me a Trick Room answer. I didn't want to stack up typings here so I went old school and added amoongus here. Believe me it's still decent since people don't care about sleep proofing their team anymore, because of terrains but amoongus puts a lot of work specially against Trick Room teams and it always is good to have some redirection imo.
  • Now while metagross and lando were both decently fast, but since the team needed some speed control suicune was added, it provided us with something that could pivot in attacks along with amoongus and is bulky enough to set tailwind.
  • And finally since azu-rachi just ate this team up, taunt lele + sub volcanion was added to increase offensive prowess of the team, while it also made sure team wasn't just dependent on gravity to take out celesteela and stuff, while volcanion uses the redirection to set up subs accordingly. Actually indirectly amoongus helps here a lot, it made me feel safe enough against koko to run dual waters.

This is just some random squad that I built around megagross+bulu and lando-i. I added Heatran since its another good steels check and it has good synergy with Tapu Bulu. I added Tapu Koko as another check to things like Water-types, Salamence and Charizard. Lastly I added Support Gyarados since Intimidate is cool and help with matchups like Trick Room and Sun.

Metagross rain with Thundurus is nice because the biggest thing that troubles Rain is Charizard-Y and Thundurus can easily make it useless with Rain Dance. I chose Pelipper over Politoed for the added support of Wide Guard and Tailwind. For the Swift Swimmer, I chose Kingdra because Muddy Water. Jolly Lando-T fills in last to provide a boost vs super fast leads like Deo-A and to pivot when necessary.

So wanted to build around Mega Metagross and Milotic since Milotic takes advantage of the intimidate users Metagross hates and also helps with speed control thanks to icy wind. Volcarona beats many of the steel types this core hates and also is big win condition to the team. Landorus provides intimidate support, a reliable ground immunity and beats the other problematic steel types such as heatran. Tapu Lele boosts Metagross zen headbutt and Milotic Sp.Def. and Shaymin-Sky checks water types and flinchs everything.

I like how you used a fascinating core. (I literally mean what I said.)
