Dragon Duel in the Volcano, banryu vs Leethoof

Aether stood upon the top of his old training grounds, wings spread and looking to fight. With a loud roar, he beckoned challengers of the Dragon persuasion, ready to smack down the first that arrived (oh, and a smaller roar to call a ref).

Charizard (*) Aether (m)
Nature: Rash
Personality: Evolution created a drastic upshift in his personality, changing him from a rash and impetuous youngster a to headstrong and aggressive adolescent. Very proud of his newfound power, he now has battle constantly on the brain, always looking to pick a fight, and constantly training in the meantime. His battle style reflects his attitude: extremely aggressive, and he is reasonably skilled at ranged and close combat alike.

Very reckless and impetuous, eager to charge into battle and quick to attack with nothing held back. His mental defenses are a little weak as a result, but his passion for the thrill of battle and enthusiasm to earn his trainer's approval are unmatched. In battle he is aggressive and unrelenting, and has only gotten more so since evolving. He seeks to put opponents on the defensive with his aggressive tactics and varied attack styles and techniques.

Type: Fire/Flying
Fire: Fire STAB; immune to burn, 50% reduction in freeze chance, emit a low glow in dark places, takes additional damage if active open flames are exposed to a water attack. Superior senses in volcanic or brushfire areas.

Hearing the cry, Hydreigons and Salamences took up flight, Kingdras lept from the waters, and Palkia himself torn open a wormhole to face his rash opponent. Aether braced for the terrors that could await him, but instead, his call had beckoned the most fearsome opponent of all...

...a bird with clouds for wings, named Wooly...

The two faced each other, ready for battle. The conditions for the battle were drawn up:

1v1 Singles
- 1-day DQ
- no recoveries or chills
- Pokemon used MUST be Fire-type or Dragon-type, or Aether will refuse to test his strength against them.

Arena: Mount Chimney in Hoenn

Aether's old training grounds from his younger days. Features include:
- Abundant rocky material and solid ground, but the earth is very rocky and takes a great deal of energy to Dig through.
- The volcano's natural heat makes Fire attacks more potent, and water attacks less potent. Fire-type moves are boosted by 3 and Water-type moves are reduced by 3 (applied the same way as Sunny Day, does not stack with Sunny Day if the move comes into effect, though it DOES counteract the boosts of Rain).
- At the end of every round, the volcano has a 25% chance of erupting-- causing both combatants to be hit by the volcano's spewage. The volcano's fury is treated as a Fire-type, physical attack with base power 7, which ignores base stats (other multipliers like resistance and stat boosts still apply).

"I accept ^^" (which I am going to assume means: Switch: *insert funny word here*, All Abilities, Items Off, unless otherwise informed)

Finally, the ref announced the turn order (exciting!!):

Wooly will attack first
Aether will respond
Data ahoy
Reverse order
Run above function until X || Y == null

BEGIN!!!

What is X||Y==null!!?!?!??!?!?!

jk

Ok Wooly, this overconfident Charizard wants a brawl, lets give him a loss! Use a Hyper Voice+Sing combo to blast his ears with an epic lullaby, hopefully damaging him in the process! Then, put some damage out with a Hidden Power Electric

Aether bursts from his Pokeball with a mighty roar, glaring confrontationally over at Wooly. He scoffs and snorts derisively at the fluffy, birdlike appearance of his competitor-- clearly he's not expecting such a small and unassuming opponent to put up much of a fight.

Meanwhile, his trainer Rikun remains calm and collected as he maps out their strategy... Hyper Voice and Sing? Dunno how that's gonna work, last I checked Sing only induces sleep because it's relaxing, no way Sing is gonna be relaxing at the volume of Hyper Voice. I think we can safely proceed with setup, given that... an Electric Hidden Power will hurt with Aether's rashness, but... I think we can handle this.

"...right then. Aether, it's already hot in here, but it's about to get quite a bit hotter. Bring out a Sunny Day over the crater, to activate some Solar Powers! Now blast away with Ancientpower; hopefully we'll get a stat boost-- now follow it up with a wicked Dragon Pulse!"

Sunny Day > Ancientpower > Dragon Pulse
very straightforward.

After a brief stare down (because it's fun to imagine a fluffy adorable bird looking intimidating in the face of a fire-breathing winged lizard), the two combatant began their fight on the very rim of the volcano, determined to make their combat rise to a new level of epic.

Aether began the battle by raising its head and letting forth a mighty roar towards the heavens. The skies began to part, revealing a Sunny Day, that, while it wouldn't have any effect on the already BLAZING temperatures in the arena, the rays from the sun shone brightly on Aether, and activated its Solar Power ability! Wooly, knowing that the increase in power would throw the momentum in Aether's favor, began chirping a lovely melody designed with sleeping in mind. The combination of Hyper Voice and Sing filled the hollow pit of the volcano with sound, but to Wooly's dismay, the sound failed to reach Aether!

Aether, seeing an opening after such an intensive attack, harnessed the mysterious Ancientpower to let loose a deluge of magically infused rocks upon Wooly. Wooly, exhausted from its concert last turn, could only watch as the rocks struck it for a good deal of damage.

Ready to finally unleash its inner dragon, Aether sent a shock wave of energy, infused with the sun's radiation, directly towards Wooly, who despite their best efforts to dodge was burned to the very soul by the Dragon Pulse attack. In retaliation, Wooly released a multitude of strange pulses of energy with a flap of its wings, which soared toward Aether. Though the true nature of the attack was a mystery, the crackling arcs of electrical energy that jumped from Aether's wings when the pulses struck seemed to point to Hidden Power (Electric) as the culprit!

Sunny Day is in effect for 3 more actions!

The volcano mercifully did not erupt!

Calculations:
Aether Sunny Day 10 Energy
Wooly Hyper Voice+Sing MISS 15 Energy (interpreted as a 5 damage, 80% accurate Normal move with a 100% chance to sleep on hit)
Aether Ancientpower (Solar Power) 14 Damage 4 Energy, -1 HP
Wooly Combo Recovery
Aether Dragon Pulse (Solar Power) 19 Damage 7 Energy -1 HP
Wooly Hidden Power (Elec 7) 15 Energy 5 Energy

EDIT: Solar Power damage was accounted for, but now it's in the calcs.

"Yeah, yeah. That's what I like to see. Whoof, what power. Continue pounding it out with another Dragon Pulse, followed by Ancientpower, then Dragon Pulse again. If it tries to avoid damage with Double Team, substitute your next move (after Double team is used) with Heat Wave! Don't worry about putting the power into Heat Wave so much as expanding its range so each and every created clone gets melted. Focusing the attack's radius over a wider area should result in no energy penalty, just damage, if my reckoning is correct. Your superior senses in the volcanic terrain should make it EASY! Easy-breezy livin' greazy. Awwww yeah."
(Aether turns to give Rikun a perplexed stare)
"......okay yeah, don't ask."

Dragon Pulse > Ancientpower > Dragon Pulse
(SUB Heat Wave if Double Team is used, expand range to hit any clones)

((BTW, Solar Power should be 1 HP per action after the sunlight gets activated... IE, aether should take another 1HP damage to use Dragon Pulse, I think. Didn't know if that was factored in but calcs say no.))

OK Wooly, that was a little more terrifying than expected. But don't be scared because you are completely outclassed by every other dragon in the game! Just kill this Charizard with your strongest attack! And by strongest, I mean a Dragon-type Hyper Beam by blowing some Dragonbreath into the beam. That attack should show Charizard true dragon might! Then, prepare for next round by getting faster with Agility.

With the sun at his back, the solar-charged Aether really tore into Wooly's...wooliness...last round, while a vocal mishap landed the poofy bird in danger without status or life to claim a lead in. Will our adorable little bird be able to topple the king of the volcanic rim this round?

Aether once again goes right for the heavy damage, releasing another wave of energy fueled with dragon fury, sending Wooly reeling with the sheer power behind his Dragon Pulse! This may not have been a wise course of action, however, as it seems the attack triggered something deep within the heart of Wooly! Harnessing every bit of energy in every fiber of its body, the fluffy bird opened its mouth and launched a huge white beam, which it had been building since Aether's attack had struck. It appeared as a normal Hyper Beam, which would have been plenty potent on its own, but suddenly, the energy of the beam shifted, growing in size and being stained a light blue as it raced for its target. As it approached, any spectator could have told you what looked like the image of a roaring, serpentine dragon appeared inside the beam...or maybe it was just my imagination. Regardless, the enormous energy signature found its mark on Aether, inflicting critical damage and giving him a reason to fear Wooly!

Not enough reason, it appeared, for the headstrong lizard once again reached for the Ancientpower within. Completely dazed from the seemingly godlike display of power it had just shown, Wooly could do nothing but flop backward in exhaustion as the mystic rocks struck it several times. As it tried to rise, a flash of energy emitted from Aether's body, indicating it had indeed received a divine blessing in the form of stat boosts after communing with the ancients!

Using his newfound power from beyond, Aether once again tore up the ridge of the volcano with a mighty Dragon Pulse, clipping Wooly for respectable damage. Trying to get a slight edge for the upcoming rounds, Wooly responded by tightening its muscles and circling around Aether with amazing Agility. Surely, given its injuries, the use of the move was strenuous, but once a fluffy bird makes up its mind to challenge a dragon, it doesn't quit! To end the round in dramatic fashion, the intense sun became eclipsed by the dense ash streaming forth from the volcano, which for this round, would remain dormant.

Notes: Apologies for not posting this earlier in the day, but I kinda finished it in between moving out of my dorm...

And also, I hope you enjoyed Draco Laser. Figured Wooly hasn't had too many ridiculously epic moments yet, so I simply had to play up the critical combo.

(Nah, I have to admit Draco Laser was pretty cool LOL. Too bad it took so long to execute, but otherwise that seems like a keeper of a combo.)

RAWWWW DRACO LASER

Good job Wooly, it just seems this dragon was bit to strong for you...lets go find a Shelgon or something next time. Finish it with Hidden Power Electric->Dragon Pulse->Hidden Power Electric

"Wooly'l get there. He just needs to expand his movepool a bit. But for now, yeah... that power is exactly what we were looking to push. I have to admit, I was pretty worried looking at Wooly's Special Attack and Defense compared to Aether's..." (Aether stomps impatiently and roars, demanding orders) "Okay, okay, settle down. Let's get another Ancientpower working, then charge in and finish it off with an uppercutting Dragon Claw. If that doesn't finish it, then follow it up with Dragon Pulse.

The sun has gone. But so has most of Wooly's health! Can extra speed provide the edge to overcome?

Aether was somewhat astounded that his puffy (I think I've now used every synonym for "soft and cuddly" in this battle) opponent outran him even with his boosted strength! With amazing aerial grace, Wooly launched another Hidden Power Electric toward Aether before he even had a chance to act. The blow was quite strong, but it did nothing but enrage the dragon further, who amassed more Ancientpower to further destroy the confidence of Wooly! With a mighty crash, the energy and rocks collided with Wooly for a completely unnecessary crit!

Barely breathing but still speeding, Wooly's last ditch effort was a full-on assault with Dragon Pulse in a determined effort to show Aether what being a dragon was all about. The pulse struck Aether, but if only for spite the attack was shrugged off as Aether channeled his dragoniness into his hand. He took off towards Wooly, determined to make the final blow, when...the Dragon Claw went critical for no reason! Wooly spun around and collapsed from exhaustion, leaving Aether standing triumphantly above!

(...and then Palkia finally showed up and wondered what he had missed...)

So, the battle is over, and the spoils are divided thusly:

2 Ref Counters for me

2 TCs for both trainers

3 MCs and a KO for Aether

2 MCs and a DC for Wooly

It's been short but fun, thanks for having me!

GG Leethoof. Perhaps another day. Maybe my Vibrava, when he fully evolves, will be a more even matchup for Wooly.... later then.

And thanks to Icebug for reffing.
(PS: Aether roars triumphantly and flies victory laps around the volcanic crater, discharging jets of flame. Yeah, he is NOT a graceful winner.)
