3 Day DQ

Hello everyone, I am your sadist of the evening.

Welcome to our Fighting Qualifiers! Like what happened to the normal typing, we have three contestants for the leadership: AOPSUser, Birkal and deadfox081. The winner will be decided in a series of three battles with whoever netting the best results being nominated Fighting Gym Leader.

This battle is between deadfox081 and Birkal, so let's get to them.

The teams of both competitors are mirror matches. A Tomohawk, Revenankh, Infernape, Gallade, and Conkelderp.

I have no idea what we can expect to have happen here. It will certainly be interesting. Birkal's pokemon appear to be more trained, but level of training means little in a battle of skill. And in a mirror match like this one, skill is going to be the most important factor.

Rather than droll on and on with introductions, let's get down to business.

Team Birkal

Tomohawk (F)

Nature:
Modest (+1 SpA, -1 Atk)

Type:
Flying: Flying STAB; immunity to Ground attacks except under the effects of Smack Down and Gravity, even for ground-based flying Pokemon. Will always hit foes with Dig (except other Flying types) and Dive. Cannot be hit by Dive unless the attacking Pokemon has a size class greater than four (4). Immune to Spikes and Toxic Spikes. Enhanced aerial mobility. Superior senses in open air arenas.

Fighting: Fighting STAB; ignore weight restrictions on Circle Throw, Seismic Toss, Sky Drop, Storm Throw, Submission, and Vital Throw. Superior reaction time in close quarters.

Abilities:
Intimidate: (Trigger) When this Pokemon initially goes out into the battlefield, it generates an intimidating roar or war cry that shakes all opponents on the battlefield, reducing their Attack stage by one (1). The attack drop is maintained at the end of each round. If an opponent switches in a new Pokemon, Intimidate can be activated again.

Prankster (Passive): The Pokemon is always prepared for engaging in sneaky tactics and trickery, giving its non-damaging attacks an increase in priority level.

Justified (DW): (Passive) This Pokemon's body reacts to dark energy, invigorating its passions. When hit by a Dark-type move, the Pokemon's attack will increase one (1) stage. A boost gained this way by an opponent's attack will be maintained at the end of each round. Self-targeted attacks do not maintain boosts.

A nervous start indeed, but I think it best we just go with a well designed lead and take it from there.

Burst, you're up! Take your Rare Candy and be ready for anything.

"Greetings, deadfox! I've heard many good things about you. Best of luck in these qualifying matches."

"Alright, Maylene. This is what we've trained for; I'll leave this battle in your capable hands."

"LET'S DO THIS."

"Go, Conkeldurr! Take a Link Cable with you and KICK SOME BUTT, GIRLIE."

Sheer Force: Toggle On

Earthquake | Drain Punch | Earthquake

If Infernape is underground on A2, use Earthquake that action, and push back actions.
If Counter, and Conkeldurr does not have a Substitute, use Substitute (25 HP) on the first instance, and Bulk Up on the second instance.

Round 1
Conkeldurr telegraphs its attack, allowing Infernape to protect itself from the Earthquake. Quickly after that, Infernape faked out Conkeldurr, causing it to flinch. Subsequently, Infernape made a U-Turn to its Pokeball, but not before Conkeldurr's second Earthquake caused some damage.

Action 1
Infernape's Protect

Conkeldurr's Earthquake

Round 2
With Infernape fleeing the scene like he just realized he entered Kentucky, Gallade takes its place. Gallade sets up a Screen to deflect all incoming physical attacks. Upon tidying the screen up, Conkeldurr swept Gallade's legs out from under him. This angered Gallade, causing him to nail Conkeldurr with Psychic blasts that Conkeldurr could not evade. Still, Conkeldurr was able to hit Gallade a few times with dig.

Calling out the reffing on that one. Low Sweep's side effect is guaranteed 100%, according to DAT:

Low Sweep: The Pokemon strikes at the opponent’s ankles with a sweeping motion, knocking them down and lowering their speed by one (1) stage.

Attack Power: 6 | Accuracy: 100% | Energy Cost: 4 | Attack Type: Physical | Effect Chance: -- | Contact: Yes | Typing: Fighting | Priority: 0 | CT: Passive

Meanwhile, Conkeldurr's Sheer Force description listed in the Original Post (which is what I'm using to play this match) was not updated to include the new Sheer Force mechanics implemented here. The current definition of Low Sweep from DAT matches the old description:

Sheer Force (Toggle): This Pokemon can energize all its attacks with secondary effect chances less than 100%. When Enabled, the Base Attack Power of every move with an effect chance less than 100% increases by two (2), but they will never have a secondary effect.

All the information leads to the conclusion that I should be able to Low Sweep with Sheer Force toggled on and get the resulting Speed Drop from the opponent. Even the referee shows confusion about this; the end of turn stats indicate that Gallade has a speed drop. I'd like the speed drop to be accounted for and the calculations re-figured. Or at the very least, I'd like to have a reorder to compensate.

According to IRC and Bulbapedia, Low Sweep is affected by Sheer Force. I was forced to reref the round by people on IRC because I thought it was not.

Birkal, deadfox's Conkeldurr's Sheer Force was updated since then, like you should have. The onus is on you to update your pokemon's profiles in a timely manner. Sheer Force was changed to the current version back in May. Meaning you have had about 5 months to update your profiles to be correct. In the interest of fairness, I will allow deadfox to decide if you are allowed to reorder. His Conkeldurr's Sheer Force is properly updated, meaning that the change happened before the battle started and is the version we should be using.

I don't mean to seem overly harsh but I'm going to say no to the reorder here. This is a gym match and should be held to the highest standard in ASB. A misunderstanding of mechanics is not something that I believe warrants a reorder. Sorry Birkal.

Additionally, you have made a mistake in the Psychic calculations akela. The move's BAP is 6 + Target's Weight Class, which against Conkeldurr gives a total of 10 so overall Gallade should have done 12 more damage in the round.

I'm going to give in on this one, but know that I disagree with that philosophy heavily. When you say that this gym match should be held to the "highest standard", I consider that to be battling skill, not one's ability to scour through implementation and policy threads. I took this battle at face value, and used the information given to me in this thread (for abilities) and DAT (because move descriptions aren't in battles) to make competitively sound choices. Furthermore, the ruling by Texas that I don't get a reorder simply because my actions were legal (where as Shed Skin Krillowatt grants a reorder) is a definite flaw in the system, in my opinion. I s'pose if ASB defines its players by how well they check threads for updates, then I will never be one of its best.

Regardless, I mean (and meant) zero offense to both deadfox or akela by my comments; sorry my frustration in the system was taken out on the both of you. I have the utmost respect for you two. Let's continue.

Not that I wish to continue this any further, but ultimately you were mislead by your own Pokemon's profile not being updated. The information was given by you not to you.

Anyway let us move past this and have a great battle :)

"Lets not give up turn advantage unnecessarily here Shank. Stay in and deal with what comes your way."

Counterswitch declined

Additionally akela, you have just made another mistake while fixing Psychic. This time you forgot Gallade's STAB on the move. The correct calculation for a basic Psychic is (6 (BASE BAP) + 4 (WC) + 3 (STAB) + 2 (Expert Belt) + (4.5-4.5) (STAT DIFF))*1.5 = 22.5 DMG, with the second use having 2 more overall damage thanks to the SpD drop/

Round 3
Birkal decides his conkeldurr has seen enough action right now, switch it for his Intimidating Tomohawk. Gallade isn't too sure of himself now. Tomohawk does his dance and summons a rain storm while Gallade calls upon a torrent of Thunder booms. With Tomohawk startled by the thunder, Gallade calmly headbutts the bird. Apparently, with enough force to rapidly spin tomohawk around and summon a hurricane to hurt gallade. Then Gallade did it again, with the same result plus Gallade itself became dizzy and confused.
