Overview
########

Flygon has many of the tools to be great, but falls just short in many of them. With the new Defog mechanics, it received a niche in checking many Fire-types while clearing the field of entry hazards, which is made easier by its resistance to Stealth Rock and immunity to Spikes, Toxic Spikes, and Sticky Web. It has a defensive typing that lends it immunities to Ground- and Electric-type moves, as well as some resistances to Rock-, Fire-, and Poison-type moves. It even boasts good Speed that lets it use its STAB moves to revenge kill many Pokemon in the tier, including Choice Scarf Hydreigon.

However, Flygon's Speed tier doesn't let it outspeed Choice Scarf Mienshao, which can OHKO with High Jump Kick after Stealth Rock. Its Choice Scarf set is also rather weak, as Flygon only has a base 100 Attack stat, but the rare Choice Band set sits at a Speed where many non-Choice Scarf threats can outspeed and KO it. It also has slightly disappointing stats, all of them sitting at base 80 except for its base 100 Attack and Speed. Finally, its 4x weakness to Ice-type moves really hurts, especially since many bulky Water-types often run Ice Beam. That said, Flygon's positive traits are often enough to find it a place on many teams.

Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Outrage
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: U-Turn
move 4: Defog
ability: Levitate
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========

Outrage is a very powerful STAB move that badly damages many threats in the tier such as Haxorus and Hydreigon. Earthquake is another powerful STAB move that makes revenge killing Fire-, Poison-, Electric-, and Steel-types such as Darmanitan, Chandelure, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Raikou, Jirachi, and Empoleon much easier. U-turn allows Flygon to gain momentum for the team as often as Flygon forces the foe to switch out, especially if a Dragon-type such as Hydreigon or Haxorus is in play. Finally, Defog is in the final slot to clear away entry hazards in a pinch.

Set Details
========

Maximum Speed and Attack investment allow Flygon to revenge kill to the best of its ability. A Jolly nature allows Flygon to outspeed and revenge kill Choice Scarf Hydreigon, Choice Scarf Darmanitan, and +1 Haxorus.

Usage Tips
========

Try to bring Flygon in after a teammate is KOed so it can revenge kill the foe. Flygon can also lead at the beginning of a battle, so you can choose to attack outright, U-turn out to scout the opponent's lead, or gain momentum in the event of a switch. Also, before using Outrage, try to remove all opposing Fairy- and Steel-types so Flygon isn't walled and stuck inside the battle.

Team Options
========

Hard-hitting Life Orb users such as Darmanitan, Hydreigon, Nidoqueen, Mienshao, as well as Choice Band Krookidile make for good partners, as they make it easier for Flygon to clean up late-game. Additionally, entry hazard setters such as Nidoqueen and Forretress can make it easier for Flygon to clean. Keep in mind, however, that some of them share weaknesses, such as Hydreigon, Krookidile, and Nidoqueen are all weak to Ice-type moves. Some of these Pokemon can carry U-turn to form a dual U-turn core with Flygon.

Other Options
########

Dragon Claw can be used over Outrage if you fear being locked into a move that results in confusion, but the drop in power is significant. An offensive Hone Claws set can be used as a setup sweeper, but it is outclassed by better sweepers in the tier, especially Haxorus. Stone Edge hits Flying-types hard, but Outrage is almost as powerful in those situations and Stone Edge's imperfect accuracy is a further detriment. Iron Tail can be used to hit Fairy-types super effectively, but it is rather unreliable and doesn't even 2HKO Florges before Stealth Rock damage. A defensive Defog set looks appealing, but many attackers can overwhelm Flygon without much trouble. Finally, Choice Band confers more wallbreaking power, but it is still rather weak and only has a decent Speed tier.

Checks & Counters
########

**Bulky Water-types**: Bulky Water-types such as Swampert, Vaporeon, and Suicune can take almost anything Flygon can throw at them and hit back hard with Ice Beam.

**Mega Abomasnow**: Mega Abomasnow can come in easily on anything except for Outrage or the rare Fire Blast or Fire Punch and OHKO Flygon with its STAB Ice Shard.

**Fairy-types**: Fairy-types such as Florges, Aromatisse, and the rare Granbull can take anything Flygon has and hit back hard with a super effective STAB move.

**Steel-types**: Steel-types such as Mega Aggron and Bronzong wall Flygon and can set up Stealth Rock or attack it back.

Overview
########

Pros:
  • Access to the infamous EdgeQuake combo and U-Turn.
  • Good lead/revenge killer
  • Access to Defog
  • Levitate gives it immunity to most hazards and to the ever present Ground type.
  • A decent check to Victini.
  • Resistant to SR and immune to all other entry hazards, Flygon is an excellent hazard remover with Defog.
Cons:
  • 4x Weakness to the common Ice type, especially Ice Shard.
  • CB/CS sets somewhat predictable
  • Average stats
Defensive Defog (Thanks to Kushalos for the set)
########
name: Defog
move 1: Defog
move 2: Roost
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: U-turn
ability: Levitate
item: Leftovers
evs: 252 HP / 16 Atk / 104 Def / 136 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========
  • Earthquake is Flygon's main STAB, powerful and accurate, and can hit Poison and Steel types that aren't affected by Toxic.
  • U-turn maintains momentum and allows for a quick switch out while dealing damage.
  • Defog gets rid of hazards, screens, the usual.
  • Roost gives Flygon instant recovery, which helps with the battering that Flygon is bound to endure.
  • Toxic is a good move to have, to stall out some certain pokemon, but not good enough to warrant a slash on this set.
Set Details
========
  • Max HP and 104 Def let Flygon effectively check Victini and ScarfDarm effectively.
  • Speed EVs and Jolly to outspeed Timid Nidoking, who usually OHKOs with Ice Beam otherwise, and can OHKO back with EQ 75% of the time after rocks.
Usage Tips
========
  • Use for hazard removal.
  • Physically defensive, great check to physical Fire types, especially Victini and Scarf Darmanitan.
Team Options
========
  • Specially defensive pokemon like Florges are good defensive partners to Flygon, being immune to Dragon moves, while taking most Fairy and Ice moves well with it's enormous Special Defense.
  • Electric types that can take out Flying-types that this set can't hit.
Choice Band
########
name: Choice Band
move 1: Outrage/Dragon Claw
move 2: U-Turn
move 3: Earthquake
move 4: Fire Punch / Stone Edge / Defog
ability: Levitate
item: Choice Band
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
nature: Jolly

Moves
========

  • Outrage allows Flygon to fire off powerful STAB attacks at its opponents, inflicting more damage than Dragon Claw.
  • Earthquake is a powerful, highly accurate STAB attack that can be used to hit the bulky Steel types of the tier, such as M-Aggron.
  • Fire Punch hits Ice types that hurt Flygon otherwise, and is more accurate and less powerful than Stone Edge.
  • U-Turn gains/maintains momentum, can be used to scout for specific moves or sets on opposing pokemon, and allows easy switches into pokes better suited for the situation.
  • Dragon Claw gives a spammable Dragon STAB attack that you can switch out of, unlike Outrage.

Set Details
========
  • 252 Atk for max power.
  • 252 Speed to maximize Flygon's speed.
  • Jolly for more speed, enough to outspeed Scarf Darmanitan, Timid Vivillon and Roserade, and +Speed Lucario, while tying with Jirachi, and Celebi.
  • Band for extra power.
  • Defog can also be used instead of Fire Punch, for an emergency field clearance.
Usage Tips
========
  • Banded Flygon's niche in UU is wallbreaking and possibly revenge killing, with good Attack and Speed stats, as well as Earthquake and Outrage, which are good moves to be locked into.
  • Before locking yourself into Outrage, be sure your opponent has no Fairy or Steel types remaining, and that any physically bulky pokemon have previous damage to ensure a KO.
Team Options
========
  • Pokemon that can better handle Fairy types, like Jirachi and Nidoking, are appreciated.
  • Pokemon with Volt Switch (M-Ampharos, Rotom-H, etc.), to create a VoltTurn-esque core.
  • Banded Flygon is best used as a wallbreaker or late-game sweeper, so hazard setters make excellent partners for Flygon, such as Forretress, which resists all of Flygon's weaknesses, while Flygon resists Forretress' only weakness, Fire.
Choice Scarf
########
name: Choice Scarf
move 1: Outrage
move 2: Earthquake
move 3: U-Turn
move 4: Fire Blast/Defog
ability: Levitate
item: Choice Scarf
evs: 252 Atk / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
nature: Hasty / Jolly

Moves
========
  • Fire Blast helps deal with physically defensive or levitating Steel types.
  • U-Turn gains/maintains momentum, can be used to scout for specific moves or sets on opposing pokemon, and allows easy switches into pokes better suited for the situation.
  • Defog is a good move to use in a pinch, a quick way to clear the field before biting the bullet.
Set Details
========
  • Meant to scout out the opponent’s moves, while revenge killing wounded pokes.
  • Max speed and attack EV’s for the most speed and attack, respectively, and 4 SpD for it's special weaknesses.
  • Jolly nature to outspeed Scarfed Hydreigon if you run Defog, or Hasty to outspeed Scarfed Hydreigon if you run Fire Blast.
Usage Tips
========
  • When using Scarfed Flygon, you can lead with it to counter your opponent's lead, using U-turn to swiftly switch into a counter or check to said lead, or to revenge kill weakened pokemon.
  • Before locking yourself into Outrage, be sure your opponent has no Fairy or Steel types remaining, and that any physically bulky pokemon have previous damage to ensure a KO.
Team Options
========
  • Heavy hitting pokemon like Arcanine, M-Absol, and Hydreigon help weaken pokemon so Flygon can clean up.
  • Hazard setters like Forretress can whittle down the opponent to the point of sweeping, and also covers Flygon's weaknesses.
  • Pokemon with Volt Switch (M-Ampharos, Rotom-H, etc.), to create a VoltTurn-esque core.
Other Options
########
  • Dragon Claw > Outrage, for a spammable Dragon move that you can switch out from, unlike Outrage.
  • Hone Claws may be used on a LO set with Outrage/Dragon Claw, Earthquake, and Stone Edge.
  • Stone Edge is a decent move, but outclassed my Flygon's fire moves in general.
  • Iron Tail can be used to check Fairy types, but it's accuracy is unreliable.
Checks & Counters
########
  • Mega Abomasnow
  • Bulky water types, like Vaporeon, Swampert, and Suicune can bulk out Flygon's moves and possibly retaliate with a supereffective Ice move.
  • For every Flygon, revenge killers are a big problem. Scarfed Hydreigon, Infernape, and Mega Aerodactyl with Ice Fang pose a huge problem for every Flygon besides Scarf Flygon. Even Scarfed Flygon can be revenge killed by priority users, like Fletchinder and ES Lucario.
  • Fairy-types with defensive investment like Florges and Togekiss.

with victini gone and LO darm doing this:

252 Atk Life Orb Sheer Force Darmanitan Flare Blitz vs. 252 HP / 104 Def Flygon: 186-218 (51 - 59.8%) -- 89.1% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery

i dont see defensive flygon as viable anymore.

the scarf set is pretty outclassed by hydrei if you don't use defog in the last slot and the CB set is just kinda bad nowadays imo--if i want a cb dragon i have haxorus and if i want flygon's typing i can just use CB zygarde since it has xspeed...

do we eve have to give this thing an analysis or is it in drop range? if we have to just make the one set scarf like this:

252 atk / 4 spdef / 252 spe
outrage
eq
uturn
defog

and call it a day tbh. other options everything else, including cb as now with zy around even thats kinda outclassed.

finished writing this up. do you think lucario is worth a mention in c&c to easily set up on a flygon locked into outrage or defog?

However, not all is well for Flygon. its Flygon's Speed tier, while usually enough to outspeed most of the metagame with a Choice Scarf equipped, it is OHKOed doesn't let it outspeed by Choice Scarf Mienshao, which can OHKO Flygon with High Jump Kick after Stealth Rock damage. (you already stated that outspeeding stuff) Its Choice Scarf set is also rather weak, as Flygon only has a base 100 Attack stat, but the rare Choice Band set sits at a Speed where many non-Choice Scarf threats can outspeed and KO it. Outrage is a very powerful STAB move that badly damages many Pokemon threats in the tier such as Haxorus and Hydreigon. It also hits for super effective damage on +1 Haxorus and Hydreigon, which commonly carries a Choice Scarf. (I just don't see the relevance of this sentence. It's a given that it hits them super effectively and you already said it hits things for massive damage and isolating Haxorus and Hydreigon is really odd to me.) Earthquake is yet another powerful STAB move that makes revenge KOing killing Fire-, Poison-, Electric-, and Steel-types such as Darmanitan, Chandelure, Nidoking, Nidoqueen, Raikou, Jirachi, and Empoleon much easier. U-turn allows Flygon to easily gain momentum for the team as often times as Flygon forces the opponent will to switch, especially if a Dragon-type such as Hydreigon or Haxorus is in play.
