It would kind of be odd to announce an ability fir an early game pokemon as soon as you reveal it but it's actually the super secret one you could get later on. Besides, wouldn't they say it was an HA if it was?
Yeah I mean, we also have Yungoos with Stakeout or Strong Jaw and Nekkoala with Definite Sleep, and those are also really strong abilities, so it's safe to say that Skill Link is not an HA.

I reallg hope exploring the islands isnt too linear. What i love about islandd is the sense of what to explore first. After all, island travel will still be pretty linear.

also want another legendary trio along the main ones

It's interesting to note how Junichi Masuda kept referencing to life & death ( well, he didn't exactly use the word 'death', but y'all catch my drift) when talking about Solgaleo & Lunala, respectively, during the Treehouse interview. And we all also have the mysterious Magearna and its somewhat ominous ability: Soul Heart. Not only does it seemingly power as pokemon faint, much like the Ultimate Weapon, but its signature move, Fleur Cannon, also looks a lot like the beam that was fired by the Ultimate Weapon itself.

On the same note, Fleur Cannon translates to "Flower Cannon" from french; yet another reference to Kalos and perhaps even AZ Floette, which IS basically a flower that was directly affected by the Ultimate Weapon and powered-up by it ( Light of Ruin ). And then we have Zygarde, who was confirmed to be somewhat relevant to the new games in a special way.

Idk, maybe I'm reading too much into it but both, XY & S&M seem to be greatly intertwined with one another somehow. I wouldn't be surprised if AZ played an important role in these new games as well.

What if Magearna is the Ultimate Weapon?

HAs aren't too bad as they now are, Gen VI (particularly ORAS) helped a ton in terms of availability, between hordes and Dexnav allowing you to get HAs offline (Friend Safari too, I think), and allowing male pokemon to pass HA down with a ditto (that was gen VI that did that, right?), it's not too bad. IMO all that needs to be changed is either A; allow male pokemon to pass down HAs when breeding with females of the same species (not with other species, or you can get HAs on a pokemon without actually getting a mon of the species with the ability), or B; give an item or something that forces male pokemon to pass down the pokeball when breeding. This way if you have a female with an HA but a lame pokeball and a male with a good pokeball (or female in good ball and male with the HA), you can breed them together. AFAIK it's impossible as it currently is to do so; you have to capture a female with an HA in the good pokeball, which stinks. Aside from that, maybe Ability Capsules could change to HA as well? I mean, most (if not all?) pokemon with HAs have the HA released, and if you want the HA to be event exclusive (legendaries), all you have to do is make the Ability Capsule not work on them ("The pokemon is too powerful for the Ability Capsule to affect", or something could be the reasoning). So, I don't think the system itself needs an overhaul, just a couple of tweaks to make life a little easier all around. As long as we don't go back to the Gen V way of getting HAs, it'll be fine, I think.

It could even be the by-product of Alola's evil team's attempts to recreate it :0
Who knows, possibilities are endless so far.
Actually, similar idea. We know it's an old man-made Pokemon. What if AZ made it in an attempt to recreate his ultimate weapon in a smaller scale? Or maybe a few survivors banded together in Alola to make it after seeing how immense its powers were.

I thinking we might get a Z episode or something post-game, just like the Delta episode in ORAS. But Magearna is an event pokémon, isn't it? So I don't think it will be that important in the story. Yes, Deoxys was in the delta episode but still =/

I never played BW, but wasn't Victini available like really early in the game?

Yeah, you could go to Liberty Garden by Castelia City with the event ticket (this is the 3rd Gym) and it was available at level 15 iirc.

Maybe it will be a similar thing with Magearna and the QR code feature. They are promoting that soul-absorbing manmade fairy alot and it seems to have a connection to XY/Kalos.

This just in, the Japanese site got updated with info from e3. Our resident translator from TV Tropes says that it has info on Magearna's move, Fleur Cannon. Its a high power Fairy type attack that lowers the special attack upon use, like Leaf Storm and Draco meteor. Of course, if you get a kill from it, then its only -1 instead of the dreadful 2. I ca see this mon becoming a very feared Choice Specs mon in the future.

Yes, but you needed an event item to get there.
It was also the last time they made an event not just a girl at the pokemon center but an actual place you could go to catch or otherwise obtain the Pokémon.

And in fact, that's something I wanted to say - holy shit, they're bringing that back with Magearna! I'm so happy about that!

Got a link?

"Peter Piper Pikipek of pickled peppers." That tongue-twister has been stuck in my head since Pikipek showed up on stream.

Stakeout looks like a fun ability. I might use it with a Red Card or use it to punish fast Volt-Turn / Baton Pass users' switch-ins.

Poor Grubbin didn't see any spotlight in the stream. Oh well, it was probably there somewhere in Route 1, since its fellow revealed Pokémon also were on this route.

--------------------------

Concerning the type-effectiveness visual at move selection, does anyone think that it'll also make one aware of opponent's abilities?
For example, if I battled a Koffing, which has Levitate, would I see "Super effective" under my Pokémon's Ground-type Mud Shot attack, or would I see something along the lines of "No effect", thus acknowledging that the Koffing has Levitate? Personally, I'm hoping it's the former.

Regardless, I think that this feature is nice, mostly because it doesn't immediately spoil me of the type effectiveness of new Pokémon encounters, especially those rare ones that I probably wouldn't encounter until late game, i.e. the ones seen on Elite 4 members.
The feature may seem redundant for experienced players, but for those who are new to the series or haven't played a Pokémon game in years, it'll give them an incentive to find and/or own as many Pokémon as they can .

PRE-DISCUSSION:
1.
Shigeru Ohmori is once again heading Sun & Moon. Not big news since he was the director for Gen VI, but it does show that GF are starting to pass the torch which is nice to see.
2. Reason for Sun & Moon: A big aspect of the game seems to be around "life" and the sun gives energy to life while the moon... while honestly it sounds like moon was an afterthought. :P They also said Alola is a region "overflowing with life force" which they said if reflected in its name (now "Aloha" has many meanings with one being what they say. Funny enough, broken down to their core Hawaiian etymology, "alo" means "presence/front/face/share" whele "ha" means "breath/essence of life". Yup, the part of the word that meant life which is why they chose it, they changed. Though interestingy enough, there is a Hawaiian word "La" and it means "sun/day". IT'S ALL CONNECTED), so take that Xerneas!
3. They're going to do something special with Solgaleo & Lunala that we've never seen before with the mascot duo.
4. Now they didn't really confirm if Zygarde will have a role in the story, though they will make some kind of mark.
7:23: Unova and Kalos weren't connect to any other region either. And yes, I know what she actually meant.
5. For the starters they focused on their movements, wanting to assure players could relate to them. On that part I would say they succeeded, all the starters have a definite personality with their movements an idle animations. I hope they've done this with other Pokemon as well since, while the models looks good, many just stand there almost stiff.
6. They're not talking about the bracelets the playable characters were wearing just yet. I hope this puts the "Synchro" theory to rest, at least for a little while.

GAMEPLAY:
1.
Is it just me or does the player's room and the room of the boy in the initial Japanese trailer look similar?
2. Pointed out by Sweetstack, the walking animation looks a bit stiff. The idle animation where the boy is dusting himself off looks nice, but he walks it doesn't look natural, I think he's taking too big of steps and his arm waving is also exaggerated. Why does this matter some of you may ask? While this would have been okay for the chibi we've had before style, now that we're going more realistic the movements have to match to not give it some uncanny valley feeling. Yes, its anime-esque but still when the body is appropriately proportioned your mind can subconsciously tell if something is off which can be distracting to some.
3. Just addressing something Codraroll recently mentioned. It does look like the player needs to go into grass at the start of Route 1 yet where we get our Starter is in the town beyond. Looking at the map I think our house is the blue house next to the Trainer School-looking building. If that's the case there's two paths, in this presentation they took the one to the right but there's another on the left. And indeed, the right path looks more wild while the left one has a consistent path all the way to the town. As for encountering trainers, I wouldn't be surprised for the first visit the trainers just aren't there. Also, seeing that the Starter is only level 6, I think you may only battle your rival the first time before where the presentation starts (that or for the purpose of the presentation they didn't battle any other Pokemon you could (which might be the case as thy had the effectiveness note for Ledyba which they only could have gotten by battling one)).
4. Added some dynamic lighting, like shadows will now move and shrink/extend according to the time of day. Very nice.
5. Battle Inferface Changes:
  • I really like the additions they did to make battling a more smoother experience. They were changes I thought they should include and glad I'm not the only one. :D
  • Move Info: While not that big of deal seeing during battle, maybe if you were making a decision of what move to use it could be helpful to see the Power, Accuracy, and Secondary effect is. Nothing major, but nice to have.
  • Battle Changes Parameters: Also a nice addition, straght from Showdown. Right now we only see changes done to stats (including Accuracy & Evasiveness) though I do hope that extra space would be used to inform of other changes like if trapped, Tailwind, Leech Seed, Curse, Taunt, Torment, Aqua Ring, etc..
  • Effectiveness Note: This is also nice to have. While I gave my general opinion before, I think having it just tell you which moves will be neutral, super effective, resistant, and immune would help streamline battles. While the Type Chart isn't hard, there is a few oddities and a single mistake could cost you (and you'd feel cheated from it). Having you first need to battle the Pokemon before getting the notes I think is also a fair requirement, especially for new Pokemon. Of course, I have to wonder how it'll account for certain Abilities. Would it say a Ground-type move wouldn't work against a Levitate user or would it go by the type (and if it does take it into account, wouldn't that reveal one of the tricks the Bronzor family has)? If your Pokemon has Scrappy would it say Normal & Fighting will hit Ghost (on that same note, what if you used the move Foresight, Oder Sleuth, or Miracle Eye)? Also would it take into account the Zorua's Illusion Ability and tell you the effectiveness of the Pokemon its disguised as? And what about moves like Hidden Power, Nature Power, Natural Gift, and Judgement which are considered Normal but change type mechanically?
6. So not only does the Pokedex reveal evolution family but also if the Pokemon is part of a group. I guess for groups they mean are like Plusle & Minun, Volbeat & Illumise, and of course the Legendaries duo, trios, etc..
19:53: GAH! I KNOW what the Rotom Dex looks like! Show me Yungoos's Pokedex entry! I want to see if it evolves and, if it does, how many evolutions it has.
7. So you don't get the Rotom Pokedex right away, yet you can still get Pokemon registered? So what, can the Pokedex work normally without a Rotom?
8. Grid movement is completely gone, you now have complete analog movement. No rollerskates needed.
9. And with grid movement gone they also updated trainer's "line of sight", sorta. Now when you approach a potential trainer the top & bottom the screen gain a shadow shutter if you're in their line of sight. For people who ignore trainer battles this would be very helpful now that you may not know where the line of sight might be.
22:14: Alola's Lass (very plain look aside from the bracelet and flower in her hair. She's also darker skinned to match the tropical region. (I have this will hold true for a lot of the trainers in Alola which would mean this would be the first Pokemon game to not feature a prominent white population)).
10. And now all trainers have 3D models! :D To think last generation we're lucky if the Champion got one... Though its kind of odd their intro and defeat poses are "still" (guess they had to cut corners somewhere).
11. Hmm, that's an interesting point. Now that we're seeing trainers in the back of the battles, they'd have to size the Pokemon accordingly. And if you've ever looked through Pokemon sizes, you know that can get weird. So what I'm hoping this means is that they're going to adjust the official Pokemon sizes.
24:06: Alola's Preschooler (D'aww, he's so excited... let's crush his spirit (and Pokemon))
28:02: Sneak peak of Alola's Youngster (the kid talking to the Preschooler)?
12. Island Guardians:
  • Okay some Alola lore! Each of the four islands has a guardian, Melemele Island's (the home island) is called "Tapu Koko". Tapu Koko translates to "sacred blood", huh.
  • Going off on a tanget here, this reminds me of a theory I watched that the games might have to do with alchemy. Here's the video:
While I don't 100% agree with it (it's one of those theories where they throw a whole batch out there to see if one may stick), it does bring up some interesting ones. First is that the Starters have to do with the three primes of alchemy (Salt, Sulphur, & Mercury) and how the Starter's designs might have been influenced by their symbols and the characteristics of the element matches well enough to the Starter applied too. However it also talks about the four basic elements (Earth, Air, Water, & Fire) which is where things get interesting. First remember that they said Iwanko and the Starters share a secret, and with Iwanko being Rock-type the four of them nicely match with the four elements. Second, it's thought maybe the islands each have a dedicated element. Melemele is water since it was a waterfall, the island with the active volcano is fire, the island with the mountain is air, and the rocky island is earth. Speaking of the rocky island, you may remember its the one with the shrine that we see the mascot Legendaries at in the trailer. If you look closely to the markings on the surrounding structures there's one which looks like the alchemy symbol for earth. I was gonna bring this up regardless, but now that it's revealed each island has a guardian this makes me wonder if this theory could hold water. Adding on to that, since blood is a fluid (yes, yes, technically its a plasma) I'd say Melemele's element (or rather its guardian) being water is right.
  • Apparently during the first 20 minutes of the game the player encounters Tapu Koko, similar to how in the anime Ash tends to encounter a Legendary near the beginning (well, except for Kalos, but they have a Legendary travelling with them so it balances out). Also "Tapu Koko" is described as a "curious little thing". Not really much else to go on, though it does seem like the player might have been picked out as some kind of chosen on (like you do). Finally it mentions how the manmade island could represent how the elements need to be combined together to make the Philosopher's Stone (maybe in the form of the Elite Four being Rock/Ground, Fire, Water, & Flying specialists?).
  • Back on topic, could it be these guardians may be our 580 BST Legendaries? Usually they come in a trio, but it never hurts to shake up the formula (also in Kalos we sort of had a quad group with the Swords of Justice, though Keldeo is an Event Legendary).
13. So Hala is just a very strong trainer... calling it now, he's a Gym Leader.
14. Hau has the Starter that's weak to yours yet he's the main rival, that's interesting.
15. Hmm, Lillie may oppose Pokemon battles but she still owns one if the cry from her bag means anything. Now the cry isn't Rowlet's so does anyone recognize the cry of the Pokemon in Lillie's bag? I tried Googling it though from the non-joke discussions I could find no one recognizes it. So a few theories were made and the one I found most interesting was maybe it's the Zygarde Core.
16. Hau is the grandson of the "kahuna". "Kahuna" generally means important person, but specifically in Hawaiian means a priest, shaman, or medicine man; though a broader term can just mean an expert. So yeah, all we really know is that Hau's grandfather is someone important.
17. Potion healing is still the same. I was kind of hoping now that we see the trainers in battle that when they use an item we'd at least see them move toward/kneeled down to their Pokemon like they're applying the item.

BATTLE ROYAL:
1.
Battle Royal sounds interesting. I know some are disappointed it's not a full knock out battle but I think there's reasonable justifcation for it. For one the first two people who get knocked out are forced to wait. Second it means players can't just gang up against another player. And finally it encourages strategy and careful planning, knocking out one trainer means the less knockouts for you to get. Now if you get the early lead you can try knocking out someone, but the thing is you'll then become the biggest target and probably lose the lead so it'll involve a lot of planning, skill, and luck. That said, wouldn't mind a mode which was last one standing. Also we need to see a Wailord Battle Royal.
2. So the stage entrances are Tyranitar (green), Gyarados (blue), Charizard (red), and Haxorus (yellow). Tyranitar, Gyarados, and Charizard all have Mega Evolutions so... MEGA HAXORUS CONFURMED!!1!
3. Serious thoughts now, I'm wondering how certain Moves and Abilities are going to work. Will there be moves that hit all opponents? What about something like Explosion? How about Abilities like Intimidate, Anticipation, Forewarn, Frisk, Imposter, and Trace?
4. Good luck programming that in Showdown!

GENERAL:
1.
Just wanted to mention the music sounded great! The overworld music was atmospheric, trainer battle (from what I could here) was energetic, and Hau's theme sounds bouncy. Eager to hear it without people talking over it. Actually I'm kind of surprised no one brought up the music even though Junichi Masuda was sitting right there.
2. And how can I not mention confirmation of the return of trainer customization! :D We didn't see anything that major (aside the girl getting a less silly hat), but hopefully they make it a bit more deeper (and also not have the girls be twice as much as the boys).

POKEMON:
And now onto the 3 new Pokemon (and more info on Magearna):

Pikipek:
And finally the first Gen VII Pokemon we saw is revealed (and looking good if not better)! Woodpecker has been a popular request for a Pokemon and here it is (looks like I got a list to update), of course I think some were hoping it would either be part Grass-type or maybe another type that would held in its pecking. However we know from the presentation that it has two more evolutions so we may see a change yet. BTW it's also #10 in the Regional Dex so it comes right after the Starters.
From its descriptions and getting the Ability Skill Link I think we can assume it gets Bullet Seed and Fury Attack. Of course those are the only multi-hit moves I see it getting (maybe Rock Blast if they want to push it). With it being a Flying-type and it able to rapidly peck maybe it can get a Signature multi-hit Flying-type move based on that, we'll call it "Peckhammer" (like jackhammer, except with pecking). It could get Rock Smash (its pecks can shatter stone), Thief/Covet (They like shiny things. You'd think it would get the Pickup Ability instead of Keen Eye), and of course Drill Peck (and maybe even Drill Run). I think its also safe to assume its going to be a Physical attacker.

Trumpgoos Yungoos:
Let's make Alola great again! Okay, enough of that. I'm going to assume Yungoos is our gen rodent. Looks kind of bland aside from the cartoonishly exaggerated toohy maw.
Thanks to Buzzer_Error we now know Yungoos is a reference to Asian mongoose bring brought over to Hawaii as pest control, Yungoos having the same thing done to it (making me wonder where they're actually from). Explains why they went with a mongoose Pokemon even though we have Zangoose. Plus Yungoos is about biting while Zangoose is about slashing, totally different (and if they introduce a third mongoose Pokemon it's gimmick could be with its tail).
With Strong Jaw and being Normal-type it'll probably get all the biting moves. Of course its new Ability Stakeout is also a considerable option. With enough power Yungoos (or rather its evolution if it has one) could carve a niche in the metagame as a switch out preventer. Give it Payback and let it go to town.

Grubbin:
Sadly not really much to go on about Grubbin, even the website only gave it one paragraph. Also doesn't look like anything special. Honestly the only interesting thing it has is the description of being a burrowing electric eater. So its either Bug/Electric or Bug/Ground.
You know what would have been interesting to do with Grubbin? Make it the connecting pre-evolution for Pinsir and Heracross. But oh well, maybe next time.

Magearna:
I know I said this already, but more and more I'm wondering if Magearna has a connection to the Ultimate Weapon. It's manmade, has a flower theme (especially now with its Signature Move, Fleur Cannon), and it Ability Soul-Heart uses the energy of fallen Pokemon to power itself. You could even maybe say its Fairy-type comes from AZ's Floette; its Signature move, Light of Ruin, is also Fairy-type and involves using its eternal flower.
I would say it may have been made by AZ, but that goes against its description of being made by a scientist of "uncommon" genius (aka mad scientist). Actually how he made Magearna function is a bit twisted, if a Pokemon nearby is hurt than Magearna will also feel the pain and is made to do everything it could do to help it. I don't think you needed to make Magearna feel pain to do that.
And as a final surprise, we're also going to be getting a form of the QR Code event for Magaerna! In Japan those who attend the new movie will get a Pokemon Ga-Ole disk with a QR Code to obtain Magearna in Sun & Moon via Rotom Dex's QR scanning function. Since we just need the QR Code (and we don't need the disk as we don't have Pokemon Ga-Ole arcade machines) they'll either give it out via newletter/participating stores (if codes are individual) or post it on the site if its the same QR code for everyone. It's like getting Victini early in Black & White all over again!

Also, in reference to Tapu Koko, one of the Melemele islanders refers to Tapu Koko as a "curious little thing"--so perhaps every island will have some sort of tiny guardian deity a la uxie, mesprit, and azelf? And considering Melemele is yellow in Hawaiian perhaps there is one for every color in the rainbow (eight / seven islands)?
