Genosect

• • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • • •

[Overview]

  • Solid offensive stats along with decent speed, makes it a formidable mid game attacker or a late game sweeper.
  • Wide Special movepool coupled with high Special Attack stat and Download, makes Genosect a fearsome Special Attacker.
  • In the defensive department, it resists 11/17 types with only one weakness and has 71/95/95 defenses, which give it many opportunities to switch in and wreck havoc.
  • Shallow Physical movepool means that great Attack stat goes to waste.
  • 99 Base Speed is unfortunate, as it misses out on the magic 100 base Speed tier, which contains many threats to this mecha bug.

[SET]
Name: Choice
Move 1: Bug Buzz
Move 2: Flamethrower
Move 3: Ice Beam
Move 4: Thunderbolt / U-turn / Hidden Power Ground
Item: Choice Specs / Choice Scarf
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 SpD / 252 Spe
Nature: Timid/Modest

Set Comments:
  • Insane coverage between the 4 moves, hitting 11/17 types super effectively
  • Great Speed and good typing, allows it many opportunities to switch-in and wreck havoc.
  • Download boost and Choice Specs boost, gives it a sky high Special Attack stat, doing immense damage with its moves even when resisted.
  • Choice Scarf makes it a fast revenge killer, 99 Spe is pretty good for a revenge killer.
  • Download boosts can compensate for the lack of power, when utilizing Choice Scarf

Additional Comments:
  • Self explanatory spread
  • Timid is to outspeed Pokemon sitting at 98, 97, 95, key threats such as +Spe Ononokusu, and Sazandora
  • Modest can be used on the set for that "oomph" in power, but you get outsped by the aforementioned dragons.
  • There are many options for the last slot, U-turn makes Genosect a great scouting tool with the Scarf set, similar to Scizor last gen. Hidden Power Ground handles Heatran, who walls this set. Explosion can be used as well to lure in and destroy Special walls.

Teammates and Counters:
  • U-turn combined with Stealth Rock and Spikes is highly problematic for the opponent.
  • Heatran pairs up well with Genosect, boosting its own attacks by switching in on Fire- type moves aimed for Genosect. It also provides the crucial Stealth Rock to turn 2HKOes into OHKOes
  • Fighting- types such as Roobushin and Infernape help against Blissey, this set's biggest counter; Roobushin can switch into crippling status, and abuse it well with Guts.
  • Tyranitar traps and KOes Choice Scarf Shandera, a common revenge killer to Genosect (you can lure it in via U-turn).
  • Heatran can wall this set without Hidden Power Ground, and fry Genosect.
  • Choice Scarf Shandera can switch into any move bar Thunderbolt and Hidden Power Ground, and kill Genosect with its Fire attacks.
  • Blissey, and Evolution Stone Chansey are also counters, as this set lacks any Physical attacks (bar U-turn) to get past these Special walls.

[SET]
Name: Life Orb
Move 1: Bug Buzz
Move 2: Flamethrower
Move 3: Ice Beam
Move 4: U-turn/ Explosion / Thunderbolt
Item: Life Orb
EVs: 80 Atk / 176 SAtk / 252 Spe
Nature: Naive / Timid

Set Comments:
  • Works as a great mid-game attacker, with a wide coverage moves, and U-turn which allows it to pull out it's counters and revenge killers and land a strong hit with U-turn.
  • Can work as a scout like Choice Band Scizor, since its U-turn is almost as strong, although fares much better than Scizor against the common U-turn switch-ins (Skarmory, Salamence, Gyarados).
  • Can be used as a Blissey lure with Explosion for Specially based teams, although Blissey is stripped off 50% of its health with U-turn.
  • Thunderbolt is for bulky-waters, specifically Burungeru.

Additional Comments:
  • 80 Atk is there to give the boost to U-turn, and dent Specially Defensive walls (Blissey, Chansey), and soften them up for an incoming team member.
  • 252 SAtk / 4 Def / 252 Spe can be used if using Thunderbolt or any other Special Attack in the last slot (with a Timid nature).

Teammates and Counters:
  • Special Attackers are great partners, as they appreciate a weakened/killed Blissey (U-turn/Explosion). This means partners like Lati@s, Sazandora, Nasty Plot Borutorusu, etc.
  • Starmie makes a good partner, resisting Genosect's only weakness, Genosect resisting three of its (Grass, Dark, Ghost). Starmie can spin away hazards for Genosect, as SR+LO+U-turn damage will rack up, while Genosect can remove Blissey and Nattorei from the game so Starmie can sweep.
  • Heatran can get a boost from Flamethrower, or come in on Ice Beam/Bug Buzz, and destroy Genosect; However, Download Thunderbolt does hurt.
  • Anything faster sitting at the 100 Base Speed tier or above with a Super Effective move, can revenge Genosect, though not switch into it.

[SET]
Name: Rock Polish
Move 1: Rock Polish
Move 2: Bug Buzz
Move 3: Flamethrower
Move 4: Ice Beam / Explosion / Hidden Power Ground
Item: Life Orb
EVs: 252 SpA / 4 Def / 252 Spe (**I'm not sure if this spread is the way to go; 252 Spe with Rock Polish seems like a waste of EVs, so if anyone has a better spread, do post it here.)
Nature: Timid

Set Comments:
  • Works best as a late game cleaner, best used if sent on a Physically bulky opponent, that will likely switch out (Download boost).
  • Download and Rock Polish boost Genosect's Special Attack and Speed to 508 and 616, making it hard to wall and outsped by common revenge killers.
  • Bug Buzz is going to be the move of choice when sweeping, as Life Orb+STAB+Download greaten its power, even Bug- type resists will lose out on a chunk just by trying to absorb Bug Buzz.
  • Bug/Steel typing protects it from common priority such as Bullet Punch, Ice Shard and Sucker Punch.

The minimum Speed EVs Genosect should run on the Rock Plish set should be 184 to outspeed +90s before a Rock Polish. Than put the rest in HP to give some bulk.

Choice Scarf should be the first option for Genesect, not Choice Specs. Timid needs 228 Speed EVs and a Scarf, hitting 320 Speed without Scarf and 480 with Scarf - that outspeeds Modest 252 Ludicolo in the Rain. The only other benchmark at this point is other Genesect, which becomes "Speed Creep." Past this is Positive Nature, base 100's with a Scarf/Boost, which let's be honest, Genesect isn't getting past. Scarf is better than Specs since if Genesect does pick up a Download boost, then that's all it needs to sweep teams, it's better to be fast and deal some damage than be slow and get hit and potentially KOed before launching a big attack, imo. You could throw the other 24 EVs into HP. This gives it 289 HP, and when divded by 8 leaves a remainder of 1/8, meaning it can switch into Stealth Rock one more time before it dies, assuming no damage.

I personally don't like the Life Orb set, but whatever.

The Rock Polish set should not have Explosion slashed in as the last move. It is a crappy move. Use Thunderbolt instead, since that lets you hit things like Kerudio, Bururungeru, Suicune, Vaporeon, Gyarados, Cloyster, Politoed, and is also your strongest option against Rotom-W. The fastest thing you'll ever be facing is Kingdra. Jolly Kingdra in the Rain with 252 Spe rocks 590 Speed. To beat that, you'll need 296 Spe pre-Rock Polish, which handily also lets you beat unboosted Joly Base 85's, such as LO Heracross, Timid Suicune and Specs Kingdra etc. Timid with 144 Spe EVs is enough to reach this.
Of course, as Berserker Lord says, 184 brings you to 308, ties with Jolly unboosted Gliscor and beats positive nature Base 90's without a boost. You can even invest to beat Neutral Nature unboosted Gengar (319) by using 228 EVs, but post-Polish that sits you at 640 speed. The only thing beyond that is Jolly +1 Ninjask at 690. I reckon 184 is more than enough. The 44 left overs EVs should not all go into HP, however, since that gives 294, and when combined with LO and entry hazards isn't great. Go down to 32 HP, since that gives you 11 uses of Life Orb, assuming you aren't attacked. The last 12 can go into SpDef.

If you want Modest on the Rock Polish set, which is definitely worth a mention, 204 Speed EVs puts you ahead of +Spe Heatran and Breloom. Most Kingdra won't run much speed in the rain. 232 EVs beats all Scarfed Shaymin-S if it's still around.

If the coverage can hit 11/17 types super effectively, maybe slash Expert Belt on one of the sets?

I found that Genosect is a great Anti lead with a Focus sash.

[SET]
Name: Focus Sash Lead
Move 1: Thunderbolt
Move 2: Bug Buzz
Move 3: Ice Beam
Move 4: Quick Attack
Item: Focus Sash
EVs: 4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe
Nature: Naive

This seems unconventional at first (I've had many a player go WTF when they see quick attack). Download is great as it gives you a 1+ Sp Atk off the bat against most leads. Bug buzz ruins psychics and Ttar, Tbolt kills politoed and neutral coverage against stuff that resists the other two moves and Ice beam ruins Dragonite and other dragons that switch into what they think will be a U-turn or flamethrower. This set gives many things a suprise when they think they are switching in to a choice Genosect (such as gliscor or salamence) and hits them with an OHKO move. Quick attack is there to do such things as take out other focus sash users, pick off stuff that is at less than 20%ish and pop balloons. This set is THE best lead I have tried in B/W

moving this to locked and outdated, if / once genesect is released you will have priority to write its analysis!
