Greninja

[OVERVIEW]
Greninja has very high Speed, a great movepool, and the excellent ability Protean, which gives it STAB on every attack. However, it has pretty weak defensive stats and is thus easily KOed by common priority moves. It doesn't match up well against common Pokemon in the metagame, such as Mega Kangaskhan, which can KO it with the combination of Fake Out + Sucker Punch, and Choice Scarf Landorus-T, which can dispatch of it with U-turn or Superpower. Greninja's Special Attack is sufficient only when using super effective moves; its neutral attacks won't do much damage. It also loses pretty badly against speed control; Trick Room, Tailwind, and rain teams with Swift Swim sweepers destroy it pretty easily.

[SET COMMENTS]
Moves
========

Ice Beam allows Greninja to threaten Dragon-types such as Mega Salamence and Garchomp, bulky Grass-types such as Amoonguss, and Landorus-T. Dark Pulse hits important targets such as Aegislash, Mega Gengar, and most Trick Room setters super effectively. Gunk Shot is useful to threaten Fairy-types, which can usually take special attacks rather easily, such as Sylveon, Azumarill, and Mega Gardevoir. Low Kick OHKOes threats such as Tyranitar and threatens Heatran and Mega Kangaskhan. Protect allows Greninja to avoid any move while its partner attacks; it also helps to scout Choice Scarf users and avoid Fake Out, which are problems for Greninja otherwise.

Set Details
========

Full Special Attack investment is used to maximize Greninja's damage output, while maximum Speed investment and a Timid nature allow Greninja to outspeed most Pokemon in VGC. Life Orb increases the power of its attacks, and Protean makes all of Greninja's attacks STAB moves. Use a Timid nature instead of Naive if Greninja is not running any physical moves. If you want to guarantee the OHKO on Azumarill with Gunk Shot, Greninja can run an EV spread of 20 Atk / 236 SpA / 252 Spe.

Usage Tips
========

Greninja works pretty well as a lead, and it should use Protect to scout Choice Scarf users and avoid Fake Out when necessary. It also works as a late-game sweeper after your team has eliminated priority and Choice Scarf users. Greninja needs to deal lethal damage in order to trade positively with the opposing team, as its lack of bulk means that it can't afford to take any hits in return. It shouldn't be switched into anything other than very weak hits and Psychic-type attacks. Protean can be used defensively as well as offensively. It shouldn't be relied on, but it can be a tool in trading more effectively against foes.

Team Options
========

Mega Kangaskhan is a great partner thanks to its access to Fake Out, which can bring threats into Greninja's KO range. Talonflame is able to threaten Fighting-type Pokemon, which usually run a priority move. Redirection support from Pokemon that can take hits for Greninja, such as Amoonguss and Togekiss, is very helpful. Chip damage from sand or hail is appreciated to help Greninja get KOs, and because Greninja is already frail, it does not mind taking residual damage itself. Abomasnow is therefore a pretty good partner, and Greninja can take advantage of a perfectly accurate Blizzard under hail as well. Tyranitar can set sand and deal with Talonflame, Greninja's main counter. Mega Charizard Y has great offensive synergy with Greninja, as Greninja deals with foes such as Landorus-T and Garchomp, while Mega Charizard Y handles Aegislash and other Steel-type Pokemon.

[STRATEGY COMMENTS]
Other Options
=============

Hydro Pump is a strong Water-type move, though its imperfect accuracy is pretty annoying. Scald is often a better option due to its 100% accuracy and burn chance; it is still able to KO most of the Fire-type Pokemon that Hydro Pump does as well. Greninja can run Focus Sash instead of Life Orb to have more staying power, but it will lose a lot of power. Safety Goggles might be a useful item instead of Life Orb if redirectors are annoying to your team. Hidden Power Grass is a nice move to hit Water-type Pokemon such as Azumarill and Rotom-W, and it is better than Grass Knot in this case because Grass Knot doesn't do much damage to the lightweight Rotom-W. Choice Scarf can be used to make Greninja outspeed every Pokemon in VGC. Expert Belt can be run to get a little damage boost without Life Orb recoil and to fake a Focus Sash. Rock Slide threatens Pokemon such as Mega Charizard Y and Talonflame. Extrasensory could be considered to threaten Fighting-type Pokemon; the same goes for Hidden Power Fire for Steel-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Scizor. Mat Block works pretty well alongside Focus Sash set, supporting Greninja's teammate by protecting it from any non-status move.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Priority Attackers**: Pokemon such as Conkeldurr can bypass Greninja's Speed and easily KO it with priority moves such as Mach Punch, Fake Out, and Feint. Talonflame does the same with its priority Brave Bird, especially when it's running Choice Band or Life Orb and an Adamant nature.

**Speed**: Fast Pokemon such as Choice Scarf Landorus-T, Mega Gengar, Mega Manectric, and Mega Lopunny can outspeed and easily KO Greninja.

**Rotom-W**: Rotom-W can easily check Greninja and KO it with an Electric-type STAB move.

Hello, a lot of this is good but I want to change up some things in the main set. Me and jio discussed the set a bit on irc, and figured out that this would be the best set:

-Dark Pulse / Gunk Shot
-Ice Beam
-Low Kick / Scald
-Protect
Life Orb
Protean
Naive
4 Atk / 252 SpA / 252 Spe

Hydro Pump does give you some important KO's (set dependent KO's actually, Arcanine and Entei fall to Scald without HP investment), but the risk of missing is really annoying to deal with, and Scald also has the burn chance which is also really nice. Water-STAB is also not that important, since the most common Fire-type being Heatran gets hit harder by Low Kick than Scald anyways, so it only gets a slash. Dark Pulse is better than other options we feel, and is not really mandatory on a set and neither is Gunk Shot, so those two are put together in one slot. Rock Slide is nice, but it essentially only has one main target being Charizard Y, so onto other options it goes. Ice Beam is mandatory on every Greninja so that we kept, and Protect is difficult to forgo. Focus Sash was dropped because without Life Orb Greninja gets nearly zero OHKO's. Naive over Hasty to take less from priority attacks.

Stuff for other options:
Hydro Pump, Rock Slide, Focus Sash, Expert Belt, Safety Goggles (avoiding rage powder is really nice), Grass Knot, Water Shuriken, Choice Scarf (for outspeeding scarf Lando-T and such)

For checks and counters I think you should merge Talonflame and priority. Also with Talonflame it can OHKO Greninja with LO Adamant Brave Bird.

I'll stamp this qc 1/2 when the changes are implemented

Ksh13 I've done all of them, but Grass Knot, because it is outclassed by Hidden Power Grass, and Water Shuriken is useless, it needs 5 hits to KO Talonflame.

Just remove Dark Pulse from OO since it's in the main set, and add Expert Belt to OO, you forgot it ;) qc 1/2

Moves
========

Dark Pulse in the Dark-type is a powerful STAB move, and allows Greninja to able to hit stuff foes such as Aegislash, Mega Gengar, and Trick Room setters, etc for super effective damage. Dark-type moves are pretty good. Gunk Shot (add space) is to threatens the Fairy-types, (AC) which can usually can take special moves, such as Sylveon, Azumarill and Gardevoir as well. Ice Beam is a strong Ice-type move that allowsing Greninja to threaten Dragon-types resisting its other moves which resist to the main STAB, (not entirely sure about this one; are you referring to Dark Pulse as the "main STAB"? Or do you simply want to say that Ice Beam is more useful against Dragon-types?), (AC) such as Mega Salamence, (RC) and Garchomp, while also hitting with no risk of miss Landorus-T, (RC)and able to threat hardly bulky Grass-types such as Amoonguss. Scald is pretty much a good Water-type move, thanks to its 100% perfect accuracy and to the its burn chance it is considered better than Hydro Pump, able to KO most of the Fire-type Pokemon. Low Kick is the a physical move that to threatens Pokemon threats such as Tyranitar, who gets a OHKOed by it, threat pretty badly Heatran, (AC) and Mega Kangaskhan. Protect allows Greninja to avoid any threat move and allows it to scout for Choice users and avoid Fake Out. allwoing the partner to support him, it helps to scout Choice Scarf users and to avoid Fake Out, which threat it.

Set Details
========

Maximum Special Attack investment to maximizes Greninja's Special Attack; (remove semicolon), (AC) maximum Speed EVs and Timid nature allows Greninja it to outspeed most of the tierVGC Pokemon. Life Orb is to increases the power of its always-STAB moves, and thanks to Protean every move is a STAB move.

Usage Tips
========

Greninja works pretty well as a lead, as it can scout for Choice users or avoid Fake out, thanks to Protect. thanks to Protect it scout Scarf and avoid Fake Out. Having something to take keep alive Greninja is pretty helpful, because of its weak defensive stats and HP. After eliminating priority and Choice Scarf users, it also works as well as a late-game (add hyphen) sweeper., after eliminating priority and Choice Scarf users.

Team Options
========

Mega Kangaskhan is a great partner thanks to Fake Out, which allows Greninja to OHKO threats its foes more easily; Talonflame is a great makes for a good partner as well, because it is able to threaten Fighting-type Pokemon, which usually has have priority moves. Redirectors Attack controlling Pokemon which can take hits for Greninja such as Amoonguss and Togekiss are very helpful, (AC) as they an take a hit for Greninja.

Other Options

Hydro Pump, (RC) is a stronger Water-type move, but has its downside in its accuracy.without 100% accuracy, the miss is pretty annoying. Focus Sash instead of Life Orb is to gives Greninja have more staying power, losing the 30% damage boost. Safety Googles might be a useful item instead of Life Orb if redirectors are pretty annoying to deal with redirectors. Hidden Power Grass nice move to hits Water-type Pokemon such as Azumarill and Rotom-W, on which it deals more damage better than Grass Knot, (AC) especially in Rotom-W's case. in this case because it doesn't make real damage to Rotom-W. Choice Scarf could be considered as an item, because it allows Greninja to outspeed every Pokemon in VGC, while Expert Belt, to get a little boost boosts super effective moves without any kind of recoil, (RC) and could can be used to fake a Focus Sash. Rock Slide is to threatens Pokemon such as Mega Charizard-Y, which weakens Greninja's the water STAB move thaks to Drought, and KO Talonflame too. Extrasensory could be considered is an option to threaten Fighting-type Pokemon. Hidden Power Fire to threat hits Steel-type Pokemon such as Ferrothorn and Scizor for super effective damage. Mat Block works pretty well on the Focus Sash set and supporting the teammate, avoiding any non-status move.

Checks and Counters
===================

**Priority**: Pokemon such as Conkeldurr and Fighting-type moves can easily OHKO it, thanks to Mach Punch, Fake Out and Feint are threat as well. Talonflame can easily KO it with its the STAB priority move, thanks to Choice Band, (RC) or Adamant Life Orb.
**Rotom-W**: Can easily check it and KO with the its Electric-type STAB move.

I know this analysis has already gone through QC but it's quite barebones, especially in the Overview. I'd like to see it padded out a bit:

Overview
  • The focus here should be on Greninja's glass cannon status giving it poor consistency. It's had essentially no high-level success in the 2015 season (nor 2014!).
  • It struggles against many common Pokemon and archetypes. Even Pokemon it's supposed to check with Low Kick and Ice Beam such as Mega Kangaskhan and Choice Scarf Landorus-T perform well against it thanks to Fake Out/Sucker Punch and U-turn/Superpower respectively. Speed Control options like Trick Room and Tailwind also overcome Greninja's best attribute, as does Rain with Swift Swim.
  • Base 103 Special Attack is very mediocre. It's enough to deal good damage with super effective attacks, but that's all it can do. You're not going to be using too many neutral attacks.
Set
  • Ice Beam should be Move #1. It's the only non-negotiable move on the set.
  • I think Scald should be moved to Other Options personally since Greninja's goal is to pick up as many 1HKOs as possible, not to dish out neutral damage and burns. If you need the coverage, it's still competing with Hydro Pump.
  • But, if Scald stays, then at the very least Timid should get a slash next to Naive and a note should be added to Set Comments stating that it should be used if no physical attacks are chosen.
Set Comments
  • It should be emphasised that Greninja's moveset is largely dependant on the needs of the user's team, since anything outside of Ice Beam is highly negotiable thanks to Protean. Explain that the moves listed are simply the most consistent options against many of the metagame's common threats.
  • An EV spread of 20 Atk / 236 SpA / 252 Spe is notable when using Gunk Shot, as it guarantees the KO on common Azumarill; a reason Gunk Shot's used in the first place.
Usage Tips
  • Greninja needs to deal lethal damage in order to trade positively with the opponent, since it's lack of bulk means it can't afford to take any hits in return.
  • Also mention that it's poor defenses mean it shouldn't be switched into anything other than very weak hits, barring Psychic-type attacks obviously.
  • Protean can be used defensively as well as offensively. It shouldn't be a focus, but it can be a tool in trading more effectively against opponents.
Team Options
  • Chip damage from Sand and Hail is useful to turn a lot of formerly 2HKOs into 1HKOs, and Greninja doesn't mind the chip damage inflicted on itself as much since it's already frail. Abomasnow is particularly notable in this role, as Greninja can learn Blizzard to take extra advantage of the Hail. Tyranitar can also help deal with Talonflame, which is one of Greninja's more notable counters.
Other Options
  • Following on from the above Abomasnow mention, Blizzard might as well get a mention here as well.
  • Mat Block isn't generally a move that should be considered on Greninja. You might want to keep it in the analysis just to steer player's away from it though, since it's a signature move and they may still be tempted. Say that it's not worth giving up one of Protect or Greninja's coverage moves since it needs them both in order to function.
Checks and Counters
  • I'd expand on Priority with just 'Faster Pokemon' in general. I mentioned Choice Scarf Landorus-T in the overview, but there's also Pokemon that are just naturally faster like Mega Gengar, Mega Manectric, Mega Lopunny etc...

One more little thing on top of that ^^. Mention Protean + Greninja's great movepool in the Overview. Protean is what Greninja actually THAT much better than other mons. Its versatile bcuz of Protean and because of its great movepool. These two things are what immediately come to mind when I think about Greninja: movepool, Protean.

Um, I'm quite sure that already has been adressed in the overview.

Oh two more things Enki.
  1. "Greninja" is misspelled in the very first sentence in the overview.
  2. Add line breaks in between the stuff in Checks and Counters.

Enki One last thing. Now that that this has been finalized, you might as well remove Timid from the Set, and from Set Comments. Low Kick doesn't have any slashes next to it, so you're always going to be using a physical move barring OO.
